41 The next day the entire Israelite community complained about Moses and Aaron,(A) saying, “You have killed the Lord’s people!” 42 When the community assembled against them, Moses and Aaron turned toward the tent of meeting, and suddenly the cloud covered it, and the Lord’s glory appeared.
43 Moses and Aaron went to the front of the tent of meeting, 44 and the Lord said to Moses, 45 “Get away from this community so that I may consume them instantly.”(B) But they fell facedown.
46 Then Moses told Aaron, “Take your firepan, place fire from the altar in it, and add incense. Go quickly to the community and make atonement for them, because wrath has come from the Lord; the plague has begun.” 47 So Aaron took his firepan as Moses had ordered, ran into the middle of the assembly, and saw that the plague had begun among the people. After he added incense, he made atonement for the people. 48 He stood between the dead and the living, and the plague was halted. 49 But those who died from the plague numbered 14,700, in addition to those who died because of the Korah incident. 50 Aaron then returned to Moses at the entrance to the tent of meeting, since the plague had been halted.(C)
Aaron’s Staff Chosen
17 [a]The Lord instructed Moses: 2 “Speak to the Israelites and take one staff from them for each ancestral house, 12 staffs from all the leaders of their ancestral houses. Write each man’s name on his staff. 3 Write Aaron’s name on Levi’s staff, because there must be one staff for the head of each ancestral house. 4 Then place them in the tent of meeting in front of the testimony where I meet with you. 5 The staff of the man I choose will sprout, and I will rid Myself of the Israelites’ complaints that they have been making about you.”
6 So Moses spoke to the Israelites, and each of their leaders gave him a staff, one for each of the leaders of their ancestral houses, 12 staffs in all. Aaron’s staff was among them. 7 Moses placed the staffs before the Lord in the tent of the testimony.
8 The next day Moses entered the tent of the testimony and saw that Aaron’s staff, representing the house of Levi, had sprouted, formed buds, blossomed, and produced almonds! 9 Moses then brought out all the staffs from the Lord’s presence to all the Israelites. They saw them, and each man took his own staff. 10 The Lord told Moses, “Put Aaron’s staff back in front of the testimony to be kept as a sign(D) for the rebels, so that you may put an end to their complaints before Me, or else they will die.” 11 So Moses did as the Lord commanded him.
12 Then the Israelites declared to Moses, “Look, we’re perishing! We’re lost; we’re all lost! 13 Anyone who comes near the Lord’s tabernacle will die.(E) Will we all perish?”
Provision for the Priesthood
18 The Lord said to Aaron, “You, your sons, and your ancestral house(F) will be responsible for sin against the sanctuary. You and your sons will be responsible for sin involving your priesthood. 2 But also bring your relatives with you from the tribe of Levi, your ancestral tribe, so they may join you and assist you and your sons in front of the tent of the testimony.(G) 3 They are to perform duties for you and for the whole tent. They must not come near the sanctuary equipment or the altar; otherwise, both they and you will die. 4 They are to join you and guard the tent of meeting, doing all the work at the tent, but no unauthorized person may come near you.
5 “You are to guard the sanctuary and the altar so that wrath may not fall on the Israelites again.(H) 6 Look, I have selected your fellow Levites from the Israelites as a gift for you,[b] assigned by the Lord to work at the tent of meeting. 7 But you and your sons will carry out your priestly responsibilities for everything concerning the altar and for what is inside the veil, and you will do that work. I am giving you the work of the priesthood as a gift,[c] but an unauthorized person who comes near the sanctuary will be put to death.”
Support for the Priests and Levites
8 Then the Lord spoke to Aaron, “Look, I have put you in charge of the contributions brought to Me. As for all the holy offerings of the Israelites, I have given them to you and your sons as a portion and a permanent statute.(I) 9 A portion of the holiest offerings kept from the fire will be yours; every one of their offerings that they give Me, whether the grain offering, sin offering, or restitution offering will be most holy for you and your sons. 10 You are to eat it as a most holy offering.[d] Every male may eat it; it is to be holy to you.
11 “The contribution of their gifts also belongs to you. I have given all the Israelites’ presentation offerings to you and to your sons and daughters as a permanent statute.(J) Every ceremonially clean person in your house may eat it. 12 I am giving you all the best of the fresh olive oil, new wine, and grain, which the Israelites give to the Lord as their firstfruits. 13 The firstfruits of all that is in their land, which they bring to the Lord, belong to you. Every clean person in your house may eat them.
14 “Everything in Israel that is permanently dedicated to the Lord(K) belongs to you. 15 The firstborn of every living thing, man or animal, presented to the Lord belongs to you. But you must certainly redeem the firstborn of man,(L) and redeem the firstborn of an unclean animal. 16 You will pay the redemption price for a month-old male according to your assessment: five shekels of silver by the standard sanctuary shekel, which is 20 gerahs.(M)
17 “However, you must not redeem the firstborn of an ox, a sheep, or a goat; they are holy. You are to sprinkle their blood on the altar and burn their fat as a fire offering for a pleasing aroma to the Lord. 18 But their meat belongs to you. It belongs to you like the breast of the presentation offering and the right thigh.
19 “I give to you and to your sons and daughters all the holy contributions that the Israelites present to the Lord as a permanent statute. It is a permanent covenant of salt(N) before the Lord for you as well as your offspring.”
20 The Lord told Aaron, “You will not have an inheritance in their land; there will be no portion among them for you. I am your portion and your inheritance among the Israelites.(O)
21 “Look, I have given the Levites every tenth in Israel as an inheritance in return for the work they do, the work of the tent of meeting. 22 The Israelites must never again come near the tent of meeting, or they will incur guilt and die. 23 The Levites will do the work of the tent of meeting, and they will bear the consequences of their sin. The Levites will not receive an inheritance among the Israelites;(P) this is a permanent statute throughout your generations. 24 For I have given them the tenth that the Israelites present to the Lord as a contribution for their inheritance. That is why I told them that they would not receive an inheritance among the Israelites.”
25 The Lord instructed Moses, 26 “Speak to the Levites and tell them: When you receive from the Israelites the tenth that I have given you as your inheritance, you must present part of it as an offering to the Lord—a tenth of the tenth. 27 Your offering will be credited to you as if it were your grain from the threshing floor or the full harvest from the winepress. 28 You are to present an offering to the Lord from every tenth you receive from the Israelites. Give some of it to Aaron the priest as an offering to the Lord. 29 You must present the entire offering due the Lord from all your gifts. The best part of the tenth(Q) is to be consecrated.
30 “Tell them further: Once you have presented the best part of the tenth, and it is credited to you Levites as the produce of the threshing floor or the winepress, 31 then you and your household may eat it anywhere. It is your wage in return for your work at the tent of meeting. 32 You will not incur guilt because of it once you have presented the best part of it, but you must not defile the Israelites’ holy offerings, so that you will not die.”

41 The next day the whole Israelite community grumbled against Moses and Aaron. “You have killed the Lord’s people,” they said.
42 But when the assembly gathered in opposition(A) to Moses and Aaron and turned toward the tent of meeting, suddenly the cloud covered it and the glory of the Lord(B) appeared. 43 Then Moses and Aaron went to the front of the tent of meeting, 44 and the Lord said to Moses, 45 “Get away from this assembly so I can put an end(C) to them at once.” And they fell facedown.
46 Then Moses said to Aaron, “Take your censer(D) and put incense in it, along with burning coals from the altar, and hurry to the assembly(E) to make atonement(F) for them. Wrath has come out from the Lord;(G) the plague(H) has started.” 47 So Aaron did as Moses said, and ran into the midst of the assembly. The plague had already started among the people,(I) but Aaron offered the incense and made atonement for them. 48 He stood between the living and the dead, and the plague stopped.(J) 49 But 14,700 people died from the plague, in addition to those who had died because of Korah.(K) 50 Then Aaron returned to Moses at the entrance to the tent of meeting, for the plague had stopped.[a]
The Budding of Aaron’s Staff
17 [b]The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Speak to the Israelites and get twelve staffs(L) from them, one from the leader of each of their ancestral tribes.(M) Write the name of each man on his staff. 3 On the staff of Levi write Aaron’s name,(N) for there must be one staff for the head of each ancestral tribe. 4 Place them in the tent of meeting(O) in front of the ark of the covenant law,(P) where I meet with you.(Q) 5 The staff belonging to the man I choose(R) will sprout,(S) and I will rid myself of this constant grumbling(T) against you by the Israelites.”
6 So Moses spoke to the Israelites, and their leaders gave him twelve staffs, one for the leader of each of their ancestral tribes, and Aaron’s staff was among them. 7 Moses placed the staffs before the Lord in the tent of the covenant law.(U)
8 The next day Moses entered the tent(V) and saw that Aaron’s staff,(W) which represented the tribe of Levi, had not only sprouted but had budded, blossomed and produced almonds.(X) 9 Then Moses brought out all the staffs(Y) from the Lord’s presence to all the Israelites. They looked at them, and each of the leaders took his own staff.
10 The Lord said to Moses, “Put back Aaron’s staff(Z) in front of the ark of the covenant law, to be kept as a sign to the rebellious.(AA) This will put an end to their grumbling against me, so that they will not die.” 11 Moses did just as the Lord commanded him.
12 The Israelites said to Moses, “We will die! We are lost, we are all lost!(AB) 13 Anyone who even comes near the tabernacle of the Lord will die.(AC) Are we all going to die?”
Duties of Priests and Levites
18 The Lord said to Aaron, “You, your sons and your family are to bear the responsibility for offenses connected with the sanctuary,(AD) and you and your sons alone are to bear the responsibility for offenses connected with the priesthood. 2 Bring your fellow Levites from your ancestral tribe to join you and assist you when you and your sons minister(AE) before the tent of the covenant law. 3 They are to be responsible to you(AF) and are to perform all the duties of the tent,(AG) but they must not go near the furnishings of the sanctuary or the altar. Otherwise both they and you will die.(AH) 4 They are to join you and be responsible for the care of the tent of meeting—all the work at the tent—and no one else may come near where you are.(AI)
5 “You are to be responsible for the care of the sanctuary and the altar,(AJ) so that my wrath will not fall on the Israelites again. 6 I myself have selected your fellow Levites from among the Israelites as a gift to you,(AK) dedicated to the Lord to do the work at the tent of meeting.(AL) 7 But only you and your sons may serve as priests in connection with everything at the altar and inside the curtain.(AM) I am giving you the service of the priesthood as a gift.(AN) Anyone else who comes near the sanctuary is to be put to death.(AO)”
Offerings for Priests and Levites
8 Then the Lord said to Aaron, “I myself have put you in charge of the offerings presented to me; all the holy offerings the Israelites give me I give to you and your sons as your portion,(AP) your perpetual share.(AQ) 9 You are to have the part of the most holy offerings(AR) that is kept from the fire. From all the gifts they bring me as most holy offerings, whether grain(AS) or sin[c](AT) or guilt offerings,(AU) that part belongs to you and your sons. 10 Eat it as something most holy; every male shall eat it.(AV) You must regard it as holy.(AW)
11 “This also is yours: whatever is set aside from the gifts of all the wave offerings(AX) of the Israelites. I give this to you and your sons and daughters as your perpetual share.(AY) Everyone in your household who is ceremonially clean(AZ) may eat it.
12 “I give you all the finest olive oil and all the finest new wine and grain(BA) they give the Lord(BB) as the firstfruits of their harvest.(BC) 13 All the land’s firstfruits that they bring to the Lord will be yours.(BD) Everyone in your household who is ceremonially clean may eat it.(BE)
14 “Everything in Israel that is devoted[d] to the Lord(BF) is yours. 15 The first offspring of every womb, both human and animal, that is offered to the Lord is yours.(BG) But you must redeem(BH) every firstborn(BI) son and every firstborn male of unclean animals.(BJ) 16 When they are a month old,(BK) you must redeem them at the redemption price set at five shekels[e](BL) of silver, according to the sanctuary shekel,(BM) which weighs twenty gerahs.(BN)
17 “But you must not redeem the firstborn of a cow, a sheep or a goat; they are holy.(BO) Splash their blood(BP) against the altar and burn their fat(BQ) as a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the Lord.(BR) 18 Their meat is to be yours, just as the breast of the wave offering(BS) and the right thigh are yours.(BT) 19 Whatever is set aside from the holy(BU) offerings the Israelites present to the Lord I give to you and your sons and daughters as your perpetual share. It is an everlasting covenant of salt(BV) before the Lord for both you and your offspring.”
20 The Lord said to Aaron, “You will have no inheritance in their land, nor will you have any share among them;(BW) I am your share and your inheritance(BX) among the Israelites.
21 “I give to the Levites all the tithes(BY) in Israel as their inheritance(BZ) in return for the work they do while serving at the tent of meeting.(CA) 22 From now on the Israelites must not go near the tent of meeting, or they will bear the consequences of their sin and will die.(CB) 23 It is the Levites who are to do the work at the tent of meeting and bear the responsibility for any offenses they commit against it. This is a lasting ordinance(CC) for the generations to come.(CD) They will receive no inheritance(CE) among the Israelites.(CF) 24 Instead, I give to the Levites as their inheritance the tithes that the Israelites present as an offering to the Lord.(CG) That is why I said concerning them: ‘They will have no inheritance among the Israelites.’”
25 The Lord said to Moses, 26 “Speak to the Levites and say to them: ‘When you receive from the Israelites the tithe I give you(CH) as your inheritance, you must present a tenth of that tithe as the Lord’s offering.(CI) 27 Your offering will be reckoned(CJ) to you as grain from the threshing floor(CK) or juice from the winepress.(CL) 28 In this way you also will present an offering to the Lord from all the tithes(CM) you receive from the Israelites. From these tithes you must give the Lord’s portion to Aaron the priest. 29 You must present as the Lord’s portion the best and holiest part of everything given to you.’
30 “Say to the Levites: ‘When you present the best part, it will be reckoned to you as the product of the threshing floor or the winepress.(CN) 31 You and your households may eat the rest of it anywhere, for it is your wages for your work at the tent of meeting.(CO) 32 By presenting the best part(CP) of it you will not be guilty in this matter;(CQ) then you will not defile the holy offerings(CR) of the Israelites, and you will not die.’”

Resurrection Morning
16 When(A) the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene,(B) Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so they could go and anoint Him. 2 Very early in the morning, on the first day of the week,(C) they went to the tomb(D) at sunrise. 3 They were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone from the entrance to the tomb for us?” 4 Looking up, they observed that the stone—which was very large—had been rolled away. 5 When(E) they entered the tomb,(F) they saw a young man[a](G) dressed(H) in a long white(I) robe sitting on the right side; they were amazed and alarmed.
6 “Don’t be alarmed,” he told them. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene,(J) who was crucified. He has been resurrected!(K) He is not here! See the place where they put Him. 7 But go, tell His disciples and Peter,(L) ‘He is going ahead of you to Galilee;(M) you will see Him there just as He told you.’”
8 So they went out and started running from the tomb,(N) because trembling and astonishment overwhelmed them. And they said nothing to anyone,(O) since they were afraid.
Appearances of the Risen Lord
[9 Early(P) on the first day of the week,(Q) after He had risen,(R) He appeared first to Mary Magdalene,(S) out of whom He had driven seven demons.(T) 10 She went and reported to those who had been with Him, as they were mourning and weeping. 11 Yet, when they heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe it.(U) 12 Then after this, He appeared(V) in a different form to two of them walking on their way into the country.(W) 13 And they went and reported it to the rest, who did not believe them either.
The Great Commission
14 Later, He appeared to the Eleven(X) themselves as they were reclining at the table. He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who saw Him after He had been resurrected.(Y) 15 Then(Z) He said to them, “Go into all the world(AA) and preach the gospel to the whole creation.(AB) 16 Whoever believes(AC) and is baptized will be saved,(AD) but whoever does not believe will be condemned.(AE) 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: In My name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new languages; 18 they will pick up snakes;[b](AF) if they should drink anything deadly, it will never harm(AG) them; they will lay hands on(AH) the sick, and they will get well.”
The Ascension
19 Then after speaking to them, the Lord Jesus(AI) was taken up into heaven(AJ) and sat down at the right hand(AK) of God. 20 And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word by the accompanying signs.][c]

Jesus Has Risen(A)
16 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices(B) so that they might go to anoint Jesus’ body. 2 Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb 3 and they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?”(C)
4 But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. 5 As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe(D) sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed.
6 “Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene,(E) who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. 7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him,(F) just as he told you.’”(G)
8 Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.[a]

1 God, listen to my prayer
and do not ignore[a] my plea for help.(A)
2 Pay attention to me and answer me.(B)
I am restless and in turmoil with my complaint,(C)
3 because of the enemy’s voice,
because of the pressure[b] of the wicked.
For they bring down disaster on me[c]
and harass me in anger.(D)
4 My heart shudders within me;(E)
terrors of death sweep over me.
5 Fear and trembling grip me;
horror has overwhelmed me.(F)
6 I said, “If only I had[d] wings like a dove!
I would fly away and find rest.(G)
7 How far away I would flee;
I would stay in the wilderness.(H)
8 I would hurry to my shelter
from the raging wind and the storm.”(I)
9 Lord, confuse[e] and confound their speech,[f](J)
for I see violence and strife in the city;
10 day and night they make the rounds on its walls.
Crime and trouble are within it;(K)
11 destruction is inside it;
oppression and deceit never leave its marketplace.(L)
12 Now it is not an enemy who insults me—
otherwise I could bear it;
it is not a foe who rises up against me—
otherwise I could hide from him.
13 But it is you, a man who is my peer,

14 We used to have close fellowship;
we walked with the crowd into the house of God.(N)
15 Let death take them by surprise;(O)
let them go down to Sheol alive,
because evil is in their homes and within them.(P)
16 But I call to God,

17 I complain and groan morning, noon, and night,(R)

will hear and will humiliate them
because they do not change

but war is in his heart.
His words are softer than oil,

22 Cast your burden on the Lord,

He will never allow the righteous to be shaken.(AB)
23 God, You will bring them down
to the Pit of destruction;(AC)
men of bloodshed and treachery
will not live out half their days.(AD)

1 Listen to my prayer, O God,
do not ignore my plea;(A)
2 hear me and answer me.(B)
My thoughts trouble me and I am distraught(C)
3 because of what my enemy is saying,
because of the threats of the wicked;
for they bring down suffering on me(D)
and assail(E) me in their anger.(F)
4 My heart is in anguish(G) within me;
the terrors(H) of death have fallen on me.
5 Fear and trembling(I) have beset me;
horror(J) has overwhelmed me.
6 I said, “Oh, that I had the wings of a dove!
I would fly away and be at rest.
7 I would flee far away
and stay in the desert;[c](K)
8 I would hurry to my place of shelter,(L)
far from the tempest and storm.(M)”
9 Lord, confuse the wicked, confound their words,(N)
for I see violence and strife(O) in the city.(P)
10 Day and night they prowl(Q) about on its walls;
malice and abuse are within it.
11 Destructive forces(R) are at work in the city;
threats and lies(S) never leave its streets.
12 If an enemy were insulting me,
I could endure it;
if a foe were rising against me,
I could hide.
13 But it is you, a man like myself,
my companion, my close friend,(T)
14 with whom I once enjoyed sweet fellowship(U)
at the house of God,(V)
as we walked about
among the worshipers.
15 Let death take my enemies by surprise;(W)
let them go down alive to the realm of the dead,(X)
for evil finds lodging among them.
16 As for me, I call to God,
and the Lord saves me.
17 Evening,(Y) morning(Z) and noon(AA)
I cry out in distress,
and he hears my voice.
18 He rescues me unharmed
from the battle waged against me,
even though many oppose me.
19 God, who is enthroned from of old,(AB)
who does not change—
he will hear(AC) them and humble them,
because they have no fear of God.(AD)
20 My companion attacks his friends;(AE)
