Dedication of the Wall

27 At the dedication of the wall(A) of Jerusalem, they sent for the Levites wherever they lived and brought them to Jerusalem to celebrate the joyous dedication with thanksgiving and singing accompanied by cymbals, harps, and lyres.(B) 28 The singers gathered from the region around Jerusalem, from the villages of the Netophathites,(C) 29 from Beth-gilgal, and from the fields of Geba and Azmaveth, for they had built villages for themselves around Jerusalem. 30 After the priests and Levites had purified themselves, they purified the people, the gates, and the wall.(D)

31 Then I brought the leaders of Judah up on top of the wall, and I appointed two large processions that gave thanks. One went to the right on the wall, toward the Dung Gate.(E) 32 Hoshaiah and half the leaders of Judah followed, 33 along with Azariah, Ezra, Meshullam, 34 Judah, Benjamin, Shemaiah, Jeremiah, 35 and some of the priests’ sons with trumpets, and Zechariah son of Jonathan, son of Shemaiah, son of Mattaniah, son of Micaiah, son of Zaccur, son of Asaph followed 36 as well as his relatives—Shemaiah, Azarel, Milalai, Gilalai, Maai, Nethanel, Judah, and Hanani, with the musical instruments of David, the man of God.(F) Ezra the scribe(G) went in front of them. 37 At the Fountain Gate(H) they climbed the steps of the city of David(I) on the ascent of the wall and went above the house of David to the Water Gate(J) on the east.

38 The second thanksgiving procession went to the left, and I followed it with half the people along the top of the wall, past the Tower of the Ovens(K) to the Broad Wall,(L) 39 above the Gate of Ephraim,(M) and by the Old Gate,(N) the Fish Gate,(O) the Tower of Hananel, and the Tower of the Hundred, to the Sheep Gate.(P) They stopped at the Gate of the Guard.(Q) 40 The two thanksgiving processions stood in the house of God. So did I and half of the officials accompanying me, 41 as well as the priests:

Eliakim, Maaseiah, Miniamin,
Micaiah, Elioenai, Zechariah,
and Hananiah, with trumpets;
42 and Maaseiah, Shemaiah, Eleazar,
Uzzi, Jehohanan, Malchijah, Elam, and Ezer.

Then the singers sang, with Jezrahiah as the leader. 43 On that day they offered great sacrifices and rejoiced because God had given them great joy.(R) The women and children also celebrated, and Jerusalem’s rejoicing was heard far away.(S)

Support of the Levites’ Ministry

44 On that same day men were placed in charge of the rooms(T) that housed the supplies, contributions, firstfruits, and tenths.(U) The legally required portions for the priests and Levites(V) were gathered from the village fields, because Judah was grateful to the priests and Levites who were serving.(W) 45 They performed the service of their God and the service of purification, along with the singers and gatekeepers,(X) as David and his son Solomon had prescribed.(Y) 46 For long ago, in the days of David and Asaph,(Z) there were leaders[a] of the singers and songs of praise and thanksgiving to God.(AA) 47 So in the days of Zerubbabel(AB) and Nehemiah,(AC) all Israel contributed the daily portions(AD) for the singers and gatekeepers. They also set aside daily portions for the Levites, and the Levites set aside daily portions(AE) for the descendants of Aaron.

Nehemiah’s Further Reforms

13 At that time(AF) the book of Moses(AG) was read publicly to[b] the people.(AH) The command was found written in it that no Ammonite or Moabite(AI) should ever enter the assembly of God,(AJ) because they did not meet the Israelites with food and water. Instead, they hired Balaam against them to curse them,(AK) but our God turned the curse into a blessing.(AL) When they heard the law, they separated all those of mixed descent(AM) from Israel.

Now before this, Eliashib the priest(AN) had been put in charge of the storerooms of the house of our God.(AO) He was a relative[c] of Tobiah(AP) and had prepared a large room for him where they had previously stored the grain offerings, the frankincense, the articles, and the tenths of grain, new wine, and oil(AQ) prescribed for the Levites, singers, and gatekeepers, along with the contributions for the priests.(AR)

While all this was happening, I was not in Jerusalem, because I had returned to King Artaxerxes(AS) of Babylon(AT) in the thirty-second year of his reign.(AU) It was only later that I asked the king for a leave of absence(AV) so I could return to Jerusalem. Then I discovered the evil that Eliashib had done on behalf of Tobiah by providing him a room in the courts of God’s house. I was greatly displeased and threw all of Tobiah’s household possessions out of the room. I ordered that the rooms be purified,(AW) and I had the articles of the house of God restored there, along with the grain offering and frankincense.(AX) 10 I also found out that because the portions for the Levites had not been given,(AY) each of the Levites and the singers performing the service had gone back to his own field.(AZ) 11 Therefore, I rebuked the officials, saying, “Why has the house of God been neglected?”(BA) I gathered the Levites and singers together and stationed them at their posts.(BB) 12 Then all Judah brought a tenth of the grain, new wine, and oil into the storehouses.(BC) 13 I appointed as treasurers over the storehouses Shelemiah the priest, Zadok the scribe, and Pedaiah of the Levites, with Hanan son of Zaccur, son of Mattaniah to assist them, because they were considered trustworthy.(BD) They were responsible for the distribution to their colleagues.(BE)

14 Remember me for this, my God, and don’t erase the deeds of faithful love I have done for the house of my God and for its services.(BF)

15 At that time I saw people in Judah treading wine presses on the Sabbath. They were also bringing in stores of grain and loading them on donkeys, along with wine, grapes, and figs. All kinds of goods were being brought to Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. So I warned them against selling food on that day.(BG) 16 The Tyrians living there were importing fish and all kinds of merchandise and selling them on the Sabbath to the people of Judah in Jerusalem.(BH)

17 I rebuked the nobles of Judah and said to them: “What is this evil you are doing—profaning the Sabbath day?(BI) 18 Didn’t your ancestors do the same, so that our God brought all this disaster on us and on this city?(BJ) And now you are rekindling His anger against Israel by profaning the Sabbath!”

19 When shadows began to fall on the gates of Jerusalem just before the Sabbath, I gave orders that the gates be closed and not opened until after the Sabbath.(BK) I posted some of my men at the gates, so that no goods could enter during the Sabbath day.(BL) 20 Once or twice the merchants and those who sell all kinds of goods camped outside Jerusalem, 21 but I warned them, “Why are you camping in front of the wall? If you do it again, I’ll use force[d] against you.” After that they did not come again on the Sabbath. 22 Then I instructed the Levites to purify themselves(BM) and guard the gates in order to keep the Sabbath day holy.(BN)

Remember me for this also, my God,(BO) and look on me with compassion in keeping with Your abundant, faithful love.(BP)

23 In those days I also saw Jews who had married women from Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab.(BQ) 24 Half of their children spoke the language of Ashdod or the language of one of the other peoples but could not speak Hebrew.[e](BR) 25 I rebuked them, cursed them, beat some of their men, and pulled out their hair.(BS) I forced them to take an oath(BT) before God and said: “You must not give your daughters in marriage to their sons or take their daughters as wives for your sons or yourselves!(BU) 26 Didn’t King Solomon of Israel sin in matters like this? There was not a king like him among many nations. He was loved by his God and God made him king over all Israel, yet foreign women drew him into sin.(BV) 27 Why then should we hear about you doing all this terrible evil and acting unfaithfully against our God by marrying foreign women?”(BW)

28 Even one of the sons of Jehoiada, son of Eliashib the high priest,(BX) had become a son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite.(BY) So I drove him away from me.(BZ)

29 Remember them, my God, for defiling the priesthood as well as the covenant of the priesthood and the Levites.(CA)

30 So I purified them from everything foreign(CB) and assigned specific duties to each of the priests and Levites.(CC) 31 I also arranged for the donation of wood at the appointed times and for the firstfruits.(CD)

31 I had the leaders of Judah go up on top of[a] the wall. I also assigned two large choirs to give thanks. One was to proceed on top of[b] the wall to the right, toward the Dung Gate.(F) 32 Hoshaiah and half the leaders of Judah followed them, 33 along with Azariah, Ezra, Meshullam, 34 Judah, Benjamin,(G) Shemaiah, Jeremiah, 35 as well as some priests with trumpets,(H) and also Zechariah son of Jonathan, the son of Shemaiah, the son of Mattaniah, the son of Micaiah, the son of Zakkur, the son of Asaph, 36 and his associates—Shemaiah, Azarel, Milalai, Gilalai, Maai, Nethanel, Judah and Hanani—with musical instruments(I) prescribed by David the man of God.(J) Ezra(K) the teacher of the Law led the procession. 37 At the Fountain Gate(L) they continued directly up the steps of the City of David on the ascent to the wall and passed above the site of David’s palace to the Water Gate(M) on the east.

38 The second choir proceeded in the opposite direction. I followed them on top of[c] the wall, together with half the people—past the Tower of the Ovens(N) to the Broad Wall,(O) 39 over the Gate of Ephraim,(P) the Jeshanah[d] Gate,(Q) the Fish Gate,(R) the Tower of Hananel(S) and the Tower of the Hundred,(T) as far as the Sheep Gate.(U) At the Gate of the Guard they stopped.

40 The two choirs that gave thanks then took their places in the house of God; so did I, together with half the officials, 41 as well as the priests—Eliakim, Maaseiah, Miniamin, Micaiah, Elioenai, Zechariah and Hananiah with their trumpets— 42 and also Maaseiah, Shemaiah, Eleazar, Uzzi, Jehohanan, Malkijah, Elam and Ezer. The choirs sang under the direction of Jezrahiah. 43 And on that day they offered great sacrifices, rejoicing because God had given them great joy. The women and children also rejoiced. The sound of rejoicing in Jerusalem could be heard far away.

44 At that time men were appointed to be in charge of the storerooms(V) for the contributions, firstfruits and tithes.(W) From the fields around the towns they were to bring into the storerooms the portions required by the Law for the priests and the Levites, for Judah was pleased with the ministering priests and Levites.(X) 45 They performed the service of their God and the service of purification, as did also the musicians and gatekeepers, according to the commands of David(Y) and his son Solomon.(Z) 46 For long ago, in the days of David and Asaph,(AA) there had been directors for the musicians and for the songs of praise(AB) and thanksgiving to God. 47 So in the days of Zerubbabel and of Nehemiah, all Israel contributed the daily portions for the musicians and the gatekeepers. They also set aside the portion for the other Levites, and the Levites set aside the portion for the descendants of Aaron.(AC)

Nehemiah’s Final Reforms

13 On that day the Book of Moses was read aloud in the hearing of the people and there it was found written that no Ammonite or Moabite should ever be admitted into the assembly of God,(AD) because they had not met the Israelites with food and water but had hired Balaam(AE) to call a curse down on them.(AF) (Our God, however, turned the curse into a blessing.)(AG) When the people heard this law, they excluded from Israel all who were of foreign descent.(AH)

Before this, Eliashib the priest had been put in charge of the storerooms(AI) of the house of our God. He was closely associated with Tobiah,(AJ) and he had provided him with a large room formerly used to store the grain offerings and incense and temple articles, and also the tithes(AK) of grain, new wine and olive oil prescribed for the Levites, musicians and gatekeepers, as well as the contributions for the priests.

But while all this was going on, I was not in Jerusalem, for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes(AL) king of Babylon I had returned to the king. Some time later I asked his permission and came back to Jerusalem. Here I learned about the evil thing Eliashib(AM) had done in providing Tobiah(AN) a room in the courts of the house of God. I was greatly displeased and threw all Tobiah’s household goods out of the room.(AO) I gave orders to purify the rooms,(AP) and then I put back into them the equipment of the house of God, with the grain offerings and the incense.(AQ)

10 I also learned that the portions assigned to the Levites had not been given to them,(AR) and that all the Levites and musicians responsible for the service had gone back to their own fields.(AS) 11 So I rebuked the officials and asked them, “Why is the house of God neglected?”(AT) Then I called them together and stationed them at their posts.

12 All Judah brought the tithes(AU) of grain, new wine and olive oil into the storerooms.(AV) 13 I put Shelemiah the priest, Zadok the scribe, and a Levite named Pedaiah in charge of the storerooms and made Hanan son of Zakkur, the son of Mattaniah, their assistant, because they were considered trustworthy. They were made responsible for distributing the supplies to their fellow Levites.(AW)

14 Remember(AX) me for this, my God, and do not blot out what I have so faithfully done for the house of my God and its services.

15 In those days I saw people in Judah treading winepresses on the Sabbath and bringing in grain and loading it on donkeys, together with wine, grapes, figs and all other kinds of loads. And they were bringing all this into Jerusalem on the Sabbath.(AY) Therefore I warned them against selling food on that day. 16 People from Tyre who lived in Jerusalem were bringing in fish and all kinds of merchandise and selling them in Jerusalem on the Sabbath(AZ) to the people of Judah. 17 I rebuked the nobles of Judah and said to them, “What is this wicked thing you are doing—desecrating the Sabbath day? 18 Didn’t your ancestors do the same things, so that our God brought all this calamity on us and on this city?(BA) Now you are stirring up more wrath against Israel by desecrating the Sabbath.”(BB)

19 When evening shadows fell on the gates of Jerusalem before the Sabbath,(BC) I ordered the doors to be shut and not opened until the Sabbath was over. I stationed some of my own men at the gates so that no load could be brought in on the Sabbath day. 20 Once or twice the merchants and sellers of all kinds of goods spent the night outside Jerusalem. 21 But I warned them and said, “Why do you spend the night by the wall? If you do this again, I will arrest you.” From that time on they no longer came on the Sabbath. 22 Then I commanded the Levites to purify themselves and go and guard the gates in order to keep the Sabbath day holy.

Remember(BD) me for this also, my God, and show mercy to me according to your great love.

23 Moreover, in those days I saw men of Judah who had married(BE) women from Ashdod, Ammon and Moab.(BF) 24 Half of their children spoke the language of Ashdod or the language of one of the other peoples, and did not know how to speak the language(BG) of Judah. 25 I rebuked them and called curses down on them. I beat some of the men and pulled out their hair. I made them take an oath(BH) in God’s name and said: “You are not to give your daughters in marriage to their sons, nor are you to take their daughters in marriage for your sons or for yourselves.(BI) 26 Was it not because of marriages like these that Solomon king of Israel sinned? Among the many nations there was no king like him.(BJ) He was loved by his God,(BK) and God made him king over all Israel, but even he was led into sin by foreign women.(BL) 27 Must we hear now that you too are doing all this terrible wickedness and are being unfaithful to our God by marrying(BM) foreign women?”

28 One of the sons of Joiada son of Eliashib(BN) the high priest was son-in-law to Sanballat(BO) the Horonite. And I drove him away from me.

29 Remember(BP) them, my God, because they defiled the priestly office and the covenant of the priesthood and of the Levites.(BQ)

30 So I purified the priests and the Levites of everything foreign,(BR) and assigned them duties, each to his own task. 31 I also made provision for contributions of wood(BS) at designated times, and for the firstfruits.(BT)

36 And his brethren, Shemaiah, and Azarael, Milalai, Gilalai, Maai, Nethaneel, and Judah, Hanani, with the musical instruments of David the man of God, and Ezra the scribe before them.

37 And at the fountain gate, which was over against them, they went up by the stairs of the city of David, at the going up of the wall, above the house of David, even unto the water gate eastward.

38 And the other company of them that gave thanks went over against them, and I after them, and the half of the people upon the wall, from beyond the tower of the furnaces even unto the broad wall;

39 And from above the gate of Ephraim, and above the old gate, and above the fish gate, and the tower of Hananeel, and the tower of Meah, even unto the sheep gate: and they stood still in the prison gate.

40 So stood the two companies of them that gave thanks in the house of God, and I, and the half of the rulers with me:

41 And the priests; Eliakim, Maaseiah, Miniamin, Michaiah, Elioenai, Zechariah, and Hananiah, with trumpets;

42 And Maaseiah, and Shemaiah, and Eleazar, and Uzzi, and Jehohanan, and Malchijah, and Elam, and Ezer. And the singers sang loud, with Jezrahiah their overseer.

43 Also that day they offered great sacrifices, and rejoiced: for God had made them rejoice with great joy: the wives also and the children rejoiced: so that the joy of Jerusalem was heard even afar off.

44 And at that time were some appointed over the chambers for the treasures, for the offerings, for the firstfruits, and for the tithes, to gather into them out of the fields of the cities the portions of the law for the priests and Levites: for Judah rejoiced for the priests and for the Levites that waited.

45 And both the singers and the porters kept the ward of their God, and the ward of the purification, according to the commandment of David, and of Solomon his son.

46 For in the days of David and Asaph of old there were chief of the singers, and songs of praise and thanksgiving unto God.

47 And all Israel in the days of Zerubbabel, and in the days of Nehemiah, gave the portions of the singers and the porters, every day his portion: and they sanctified holy things unto the Levites; and the Levites sanctified them unto the children of Aaron.

13 On that day they read in the book of Moses in the audience of the people; and therein was found written, that the Ammonite and the Moabite should not come into the congregation of God for ever;

Because they met not the children of Israel with bread and with water, but hired Balaam against them, that he should curse them: howbeit our God turned the curse into a blessing.

Now it came to pass, when they had heard the law, that they separated from Israel all the mixed multitude.

And before this, Eliashib the priest, having the oversight of the chamber of the house of our God, was allied unto Tobiah:

And he had prepared for him a great chamber, where aforetime they laid the meat offerings, the frankincense, and the vessels, and the tithes of the corn, the new wine, and the oil, which was commanded to be given to the Levites, and the singers, and the porters; and the offerings of the priests.

But in all this time was not I at Jerusalem: for in the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon came I unto the king, and after certain days obtained I leave of the king:

And I came to Jerusalem, and understood of the evil that Eliashib did for Tobiah, in preparing him a chamber in the courts of the house of God.

And it grieved me sore: therefore I cast forth all the household stuff to Tobiah out of the chamber.

Then I commanded, and they cleansed the chambers: and thither brought I again the vessels of the house of God, with the meat offering and the frankincense.

10 And I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given them: for the Levites and the singers, that did the work, were fled every one to his field.

11 Then contended I with the rulers, and said, Why is the house of God forsaken? And I gathered them together, and set them in their place.

12 Then brought all Judah the tithe of the corn and the new wine and the oil unto the treasuries.

13 And I made treasurers over the treasuries, Shelemiah the priest, and Zadok the scribe, and of the Levites, Pedaiah: and next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah: for they were counted faithful, and their office was to distribute unto their brethren.

14 Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and wipe not out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God, and for the offices thereof.

15 In those days saw I in Judah some treading wine presses on the sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and lading asses; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day: and I testified against them in the day wherein they sold victuals.

16 There dwelt men of Tyre also therein, which brought fish, and all manner of ware, and sold on the sabbath unto the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem.

17 Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said unto them, What evil thing is this that ye do, and profane the sabbath day?

18 Did not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city? yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel by profaning the sabbath.

19 And it came to pass, that when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the sabbath, I commanded that the gates should be shut, and charged that they should not be opened till after the sabbath: and some of my servants set I at the gates, that there should no burden be brought in on the sabbath day.

20 So the merchants and sellers of all kind of ware lodged without Jerusalem once or twice.

21 Then I testified against them, and said unto them, Why lodge ye about the wall? if ye do so again, I will lay hands on you. From that time forth came they no more on the sabbath.

22 And I commanded the Levites that they should cleanse themselves, and that they should come and keep the gates, to sanctify the sabbath day. Remember me, O my God, concerning this also, and spare me according to the greatness of thy mercy.

23 In those days also saw I Jews that had married wives of Ashdod, of Ammon, and of Moab:

24 And their children spake half in the speech of Ashdod, and could not speak in the Jews' language, but according to the language of each people.

25 And I contended with them, and cursed them, and smote certain of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, saying, Ye shall not give your daughters unto their sons, nor take their daughters unto your sons, or for yourselves.

26 Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? yet among many nations was there no king like him, who was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel: nevertheless even him did outlandish women cause to sin.

27 Shall we then hearken unto you to do all this great evil, to transgress against our God in marrying strange wives?

28 And one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was son in law to Sanballat the Horonite: therefore I chased him from me.

29 Remember them, O my God, because they have defiled the priesthood, and the covenant of the priesthood, and of the Levites.

30 Thus cleansed I them from all strangers, and appointed the wards of the priests and the Levites, every one in his business;

31 And for the wood offering, at times appointed, and for the firstfruits. Remember me, O my God, for good.

11 Imitate me, as I also imitate Christ.(A)

Instructions about Head Coverings

Now I praise you[a] because you always remember me and keep the traditions(B) just as I delivered(C) them to you. But I want you to know that Christ is the head(D) of every man, and the man is the head of the woman,[b](E) and God is the head of Christ.(F) Every man who prays or prophesies with something on his head dishonors(G) his head. But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, since that is one and the same as having her head shaved.(H) So if a woman’s head[c] is not covered, her hair should be cut off. But if it is disgraceful for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, she should be covered.

A man, in fact, should not cover his head, because he is God’s image(I) and glory,(J) but woman is man’s glory. For man did not come from woman, but woman came from man.(K) And man was not created for woman, but woman for man. 10 This is why a woman should have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. 11 In the Lord, however, woman is not independent of man, and man is not independent of woman. 12 For just as woman came from man, so man comes through woman, and all things come from God.(L)

13 Judge(M) for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? 14 Does not even nature itself teach(N) you that if a man has long hair it is a disgrace(O) to him, 15 but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory?(P) For her hair is given to her[d] as a covering. 16 But if anyone wants to argue about this, we have no other[e] custom, nor do the churches of God.

11 Follow my example,(A) as I follow the example of Christ.(B)

On Covering the Head in Worship

I praise you(C) for remembering me in everything(D) and for holding to the traditions just as I passed them on to you.(E) But I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ,(F) and the head of the woman is man,[a](G) and the head of Christ is God.(H) Every man who prays or prophesies(I) with his head covered dishonors his head. But every woman who prays or prophesies(J) with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is the same as having her head shaved.(K) For if a woman does not cover her head, she might as well have her hair cut off; but if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, then she should cover her head.

A man ought not to cover his head,[b] since he is the image(L) and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man. For man did not come from woman, but woman from man;(M) neither was man created for woman, but woman for man.(N) 10 It is for this reason that a woman ought to have authority over her own[c] head, because of the angels. 11 Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. 12 For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God.(O)

13 Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? 14 Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him, 15 but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering. 16 If anyone wants to be contentious about this, we have no other practice—nor do the churches of God.(P)

Prayer for Victory

Oppose my opponents, Lord;
fight those who fight me.(A)
Take Your shields—large and small—
and come to my aid.(B)
Draw the spear and javelin against my pursuers,
and assure me: “I am your deliverance.”(C)

Let those who seek to kill me
be disgraced and humiliated;
let those who plan to harm me
be turned back and ashamed.(D)
Let them be like chaff in the wind,
with the angel of the Lord driving them away.(E)
Let their way be dark and slippery,
with the angel of the Lord pursuing them.(F)
They hid their net for me without cause;
they dug a pit for me without cause.(G)
Let ruin come on him unexpectedly,
and let the net that he hid ensnare him;
let him fall into it—to his ruin.(H)

Then I will rejoice in the Lord;
I will delight in His deliverance.(I)
10 My very bones will say,
Lord, who is like You,(J)
rescuing the poor from one too strong for him,
the poor or the needy from one who robs him?”(K)

11 Malicious witnesses come forward;
they question me about things I do not know.(L)
12 They repay me evil for good,

my clothing was sackcloth;
I humbled myself with fasting,

14 I went about grieving as if for my friend or brother;
I was bowed down with grief,

15 But in mine adversity they rejoiced, and gathered themselves together: yea, the abjects gathered themselves together against me, and I knew it not; they did tear me, and ceased not:

16 With hypocritical mockers in feasts, they gnashed upon me with their teeth.
