La tribu de Leví: rango y funciones
3 Esta es la descendencia de Aarón y de Moisés, cuando el Señor habló con Moisés en el monte Sinaí 2 y estos eran los nombres de los hijos de Aarón: Nadab el primogénito, Abihú, Eleazar e Itamar. 3 Así se llamaban los hijos de Aarón, sacerdotes ungidos y consagrados para ejercer la función sacerdotal. 4 Pero Nadab y Abihú murieron en el desierto de Sinaí, sin tener hijos, cuando ofrecieron fuego ilícito delante del Señor. Por su parte, Eleazar e Itamar ejercieron el sacerdocio durante la vida de su padre Aarón.
5 El Señor se dirigió a Moisés y le dijo:
6 — Convoca a los de la tribu de Leví y ponlos a disposición del sacerdote Aarón para que lo asistan. 7 Ellos lo asistirán y asistirán a toda la comunidad en la Tienda del encuentro, desempeñando las tareas de la Morada 8 Estarán a cargo de todos los utensilios de la Tienda del encuentro, y asistirán a los israelitas, desempeñando las tareas de la Morada. 9 Pondrás los levitas al servicio de Aarón y de sus hijos, pues le han sido donados por parte de los israelitas. 10 Y designarás a Aarón y a sus hijos para que ejerzan el sacerdocio; el intruso que se arrogue ese derecho será condenado a muerte.
11 El Señor se dirigió a Moisés y le dijo:
12 — Mira, yo me reservo a los levitas de entre los demás israelitas en sustitución de todos los primogénitos —los primeros nacidos— de Israel; los levitas serán, pues, míos. 13 Porque mío es todo primogénito; desde el día en que yo hice morir a todos los primogénitos egipcios, consagré para mí a todos los primogénitos de Israel, tanto personas como animales. Y serán míos, pues yo soy el Señor.
Primer censo de los levitas
14 El Señor se dirigió a Moisés en el desierto de Sinaí y le dijo:
15 — Haz un censo de los hijos de Leví según sus casas patriarcales, por sus clanes; registrarás a todos los varones mayores de un mes.
16 Y Moisés los registró conforme a la palabra y al mandato del Señor. 17 Estos son los nombres de los hijos de Leví: Guersón, Queat y Merarí. 18 Los nombres de los hijos de Guersón por clanes son Libní y Simeí. 19 Los hijos de Queat por clanes son: Amrán, Jisar, Hebrón y Uziel; 20 y los hijos de Merarí por clanes son: Majlí y Musí. Estos son los clanes de Leví, según las casas patriarcales.
21 A Guersón pertenecía el clan de los libnitas y el de los simeitas; estos eran los clanes guersonitas. 22 Los censados, contando a todos los varones mayores de un mes, fueron siete mil quinientos. 23 Los clanes de Guersón acampaban al occidente detrás de la Morada. 24 El jefe de la casa patriarcal de los guersonitas era Eliasaf, hijo de Lael. 25 A los guersonitas correspondía, en la Tienda del encuentro, el cuidado de la Morada, de la Tienda y su cubierta, de la cortina de la entrada de la Tienda del encuentro, 26 de las cortinas del atrio, y de la cortina de la puerta del atrio, que rodea la Morada, así como del cordaje necesario para todas las tareas de montaje.
27 A Queat pertenecían los clanes de Amrán, Jisar, Hebrón y Uziel; estos eran los clanes de los queatitas. 28 Los censados, que cumplían funciones en el santuario, contando a todos los varones mayores de un mes, fueron ocho mil seiscientos, 29 Los clanes de los queatitas acampaban al lado sur de la Morada. 30 El jefe de la casa patriarcal de los clanes queatitas era Elizafán, hijo de Uziel.
31 A cargo de ellos estaban el Arca, la mesa, el candelabro, los altares, los utensilios del santuario para ejercer el culto, el velo y todo lo necesario para las tareas de montaje. 32 El principal de los jefes de los levitas era Eleazar, hijo del sacerdote Aarón, responsable de los que servían en las cosas santas. 33 A Merarí pertenecían los clanes de Majlí y Musí; estos eran los clanes meraritas. 34 Los censados, contando a todos los varones mayores de un mes, fueron seis mil doscientos. 35 El jefe de la casa patriarcal de Merarí era Zuriel, hijo de Abijail, y acampaban al lado norte de la Morada. 36 A cargo de los meraritas estaba la custodia de los tablones de la Morada, sus barras, sus columnas, sus basas, todos sus utensilios y todo lo necesario para las tareas de montaje. 37 También estaban a su cargo las columnas alrededor del atrio, sus basas, sus estacas y sus cuerdas.
38 En cuanto a Moisés, a Aarón y a sus hijos, debían acampar al oriente, frente a la Morada, es decir, frente a la Tienda del encuentro, y a su cargo estaban las tareas del recinto sagrado en sustitución de los demás israelitas. Cualquier intruso que se arrogue ese derecho, será condenado a muerte.
39 El total de los levitas que Moisés y Aarón censaron según sus respectivos clanes por orden del Señor —todos ellos varones y mayores de un mes—, fue de veintidós mil.
El rescate de los primogénitos
40 El Señor dijo a Moisés:
— Censa a todos los primogénitos varones de los israelitas mayores de un mes, y registra sus nombres. 41 Y reserva a los levitas para mí —yo soy el Señor— en lugar de todos los primogénitos de Israel; reserva también para mí el ganado de los levitas en lugar de todos los primogénitos del ganado de los israelitas.
42 Censó entonces Moisés, como el Señor le había mandado, a todos los primogénitos de los israelitas. 43 El total de todos los primogénitos varones mayores de un mes, registrados por sus nombres, fue de veintidós mil doscientos setenta y tres.
44 Luego el Señor se dirigió a Moisés y le dijo:
45 — Reserva para mí a los levitas en lugar de todos los primogénitos de los israelitas; y reserva también el ganado de los levitas en lugar del ganado de los israelitas; los levitas serán míos. Yo soy el Señor. 46 Y como rescate por los doscientos setenta y tres primogénitos israelitas, que exceden el número de los levitas, 47 tomarás cinco siclos por cabeza, según el valor del siclo del santuario que es de veinte gueras, 48 dando a Aarón y a sus hijos el dinero del rescate de los que exceden.
49 Tomó, pues, Moisés el dinero correspondiente al rescate de los que excedían el número de los rescatados por los levitas 50 —el dinero correspondiente al rescate de los primogénitos de los israelitas que sumaba mil trescientos sesenta y cinco siclos en total, según el valor del siclo del santuario— 51 y se lo dio a Aarón y a sus hijos, conforme a la orden que el Señor había dado a Moisés.

Deberes de los levitas
3 Por el tiempo en que el Señor habló a Moisés en el monte Sinaí, los descendientes de Aarón y de Moisés eran éstos: 2 Los hijos de Aarón: Nadab, que era el mayor, Abihú, Eleazar e Itamar. 3 Los cuatro fueron consagrados y ordenados para oficiar como sacerdotes, 4 pero Nadab y Abihú murieron delante del Señor porque en el desierto de Sinaí le ofrecieron un fuego extraño. Ellos no tuvieron hijos. Entonces Eleazar e Itamar ejercieron el sacerdocio bajo la vigilancia de Aarón, su padre.
5 El Señor se dirigió a Moisés y le dijo:
6 «Llama a los de la tribu de Leví, para que se pongan a las órdenes del sacerdote Aarón y le sirvan. 7 Estarán al servicio de Aarón y de todo el pueblo, ante la tienda del encuentro, y se encargarán del servicio del santuario. 8 Cuidarán también de los utensilios de la tienda del encuentro, y estarán al servicio de los israelitas en todos los oficios del santuario. 9 Aparta a los levitas de los demás israelitas, para que se dediquen especialmente a servir a Aarón y a sus descendientes, 10 y deja en manos de Aarón y sus descendientes las funciones del sacerdocio. Si alguien oficia como sacerdote sin serlo, será condenado a muerte.»
Los levitas, propiedad del Señor
11 El Señor se dirigió a Moisés y le dijo:
12 «De entre los israelitas he escogido a los levitas, a cambio del primer hijo de cada familia. Ellos me pertenecen, 13 porque a mí me pertenece todo primer hijo. Cuando hice morir a todos los hijos mayores de los egipcios, reservé para mí los hijos mayores de los israelitas y las primeras crías de sus animales. Por lo tanto, me pertenecen. Yo soy el Señor.»
Censo de los levitas
14 El Señor se dirigió a Moisés en el desierto de Sinaí, y le dijo: 15 «Haz un censo de los levitas por orden de familias y clanes, y registra a todos los levitas varones de un mes de edad para arriba.» 16 Y Moisés hizo el censo, tal como el Señor se lo había ordenado.
17 Los hijos de Leví fueron Guersón, Quehat y Merarí.
18 Los descendientes de Guersón, por orden de clanes, fueron Libní y Simí.
19 Los descendientes de Quehat, por orden de clanes, fueron Amram, Ishar, Hebrón y Uziel.
20 Los descendientes de Merarí, por orden de clanes, fueron Mahli y Musí.
Todos estos fueron los clanes de Leví por orden de familias.
21 Los clanes de Guersón eran los de Libní y Simí. 22 El total de sus varones registrados de un mes de edad para arriba, fue de siete mil quinientos. 23 Estos clanes acampaban al oeste, detrás del santuario. 24 El jefe de las familias descendientes de Guersón era Eliasaf, el hijo de Lael. 25 En la tienda del encuentro ellos se encargaban del cuidado del santuario, de la tienda, de su cubierta de pieles, de la cortina que está a la entrada de la tienda, 26 de las cortinas del patio, de la cortina que está a la entrada del patio que rodea el santuario y el altar, y de las cuerdas correspondientes.
27 Los clanes de Quehat eran los de Amram, Ishar, Hebrón y Uziel, 28 y el total de varones registrados de un mes de edad para arriba, fue de ocho mil trescientos. Estos clanes estaban al cuidado del santuario 29 y acampaban al lado sur del santuario. 30 El jefe de estos clanes era Elisafán, hijo de Uziel. 31 Estos clanes tenían bajo su cuidado el arca de la alianza, la mesa, el candelabro, los altares, los objetos sagrados necesarios para el servicio religioso, el velo y todos los utensilios correspondientes.
32 El jefe principal de los levitas era Eleazar, hijo del sacerdote Aarón, y estaba encargado de vigilar a los que cuidaban el santuario.
33 Los clanes de Merarí eran los de Mahli y Musí. 34 El total de sus varones registrados de un mes de edad para arriba, fue de seis mil doscientos. 35 Su jefe era Suriel, hijo de Abihail, y acampaban al lado norte del santuario. 36 Los descendientes de Merarí tenían bajo su cuidado las tablas del santuario, con sus travesaños, sus postes, sus bases y todos sus utensilios, 37 lo mismo que los postes que rodeaban el patio, con sus bases, sus estacas y sus cuerdas.
38 Por el lado oriental, frente al santuario y delante de la tienda del encuentro, acampaban Moisés y Aarón y los hijos de Aarón, los cuales cuidaban el santuario en nombre de los demás israelitas. Si alguien oficiaba como sacerdote sin serlo, era condenado a muerte.
39 Cuando Moisés y Aarón hicieron el censo de los levitas por orden de clanes, tal como el Señor se lo había ordenado, resultó que los varones de un mes de edad para arriba eran veintidós mil en total.
Rescate de los hijos mayores
40 El Señor dijo a Moisés:
«Haz un censo de los hijos mayores de los israelitas, de un mes de edad para arriba, y registra sus nombres. 41 Luego, a cambio de los hijos mayores de los israelitas, resérvame a los levitas. Yo soy el Señor. De la misma manera, a cambio de las primeras crías del ganado de los israelitas, resérvame el ganado de los levitas.»
42 Moisés hizo el censo de los hijos mayores de los israelitas, tal como el Señor se lo había ordenado, 43 y todos los varones registrados de un mes de edad para arriba fueron veintidós mil doscientos setenta y tres.
44 Y el Señor se dirigió a Moisés y le dijo:
45 «Toma a los levitas a cambio de los hijos mayores de los israelitas, y el ganado de los levitas a cambio del ganado de los israelitas, pues los levitas me pertenecen. Yo soy el Señor. 46 Pero los hijos mayores de los israelitas son más numerosos que los levitas; así que, para rescatar a esos doscientos setenta y tres hijos mayores que hay de más, 47 pide una contribución de cinco monedas de plata por persona, según el peso oficial del santuario, que es la moneda de plata de once gramos, 48 y entrega ese dinero a Aarón y a sus hijos como rescate por ellos.»
49 Moisés recogió el dinero del rescate por los hijos mayores israelitas que había de más, 50 y recogió mil trescientas sesenta y cinco monedas de plata, conforme al peso oficial del santuario. 51 Después entregó este dinero a Aarón y a sus hijos, tal como el Señor se lo había ordenado.

La tribu de Leví

Los sacerdotes
2 Los nombres de los hijos de Aarón son los siguientes: Nadab el primogénito, Abiú, Eleazar e Itamar. 3 Ellos fueron los aaronitas ungidos, ordenados al sacerdocio. 4 Nadab y Abiú murieron en presencia del Señor cuando, en el desierto de Sinaí, le ofrecieron sacrificios con un fuego ilícito que no tenían por qué ofrecer. Como Nadab y Abiú no tuvieron hijos, solo Eleazar e Itamar ejercieron el sacerdocio en vida de su padre Aarón.
Ministerio de los levitas
5 El Señor dijo a Moisés: 6 «Trae a la tribu de Leví y preséntasela al sacerdote Aarón. Los levitas le ayudarán en el ministerio. 7 Desempeñarán sus funciones en lugar de Aarón y de toda la comunidad, encargándose del servicio del santuario en la Tienda de reunión. 8 Cuidarán allí de todos los utensilios de la Tienda de reunión y desempeñarán sus funciones en lugar de los israelitas, encargándose del servicio del santuario. 9 Pondrás a los levitas a las órdenes de Aarón y de sus hijos. Entre los israelitas, serán ellos los que estén totalmente dedicados a él. 10 A Aarón y a sus hijos les asignarás el ministerio sacerdotal. Pero cualquier extraño que se acerque al santuario será condenado a muerte».
Elección de los levitas
11 El Señor dijo a Moisés: 12 «Yo mismo he escogido a los levitas de entre los israelitas, como sustitutos de todo primogénito. Los levitas son míos, 13 porque míos son todos los primogénitos. Cuando exterminé a todos los primogénitos de Egipto, consagré para mí a todo primogénito de Israel, tanto de hombres como de animales. Por lo tanto, son míos. Yo soy el Señor».
Censo de la tribu de Leví
14 El Señor dijo a Moisés en el desierto de Sinaí: 15 «Haz un censo de los levitas por clanes y por familias patriarcales, tomando en cuenta a todo varón mayor de un mes». 16 Moisés llevó a cabo el censo, tal como el Señor mismo se lo había ordenado.

18 Clanes guersonitas:

Los clanes coatitas
27 De Coat procedían los clanes de Amirán, Izar, Hebrón y Uziel. Estos eran los clanes coatitas, 28 que tenían a su cargo el santuario.
El total de los varones mayores de un mes llegó a ocho mil seiscientos.
29 Los clanes coatitas acampaban al sur del santuario.
30 El jefe de la familia patriarcal de los coatitas era Elizafán, hijo de Uziel.
31 Tenían a su cargo el arca, la mesa, el candelabro, los altares, los utensilios del santuario con los que ministraban, y la cortina de la entrada, como también todo lo necesario para su servicio.
32 El jefe principal de los levitas era Eleazar, hijo de Aarón el sacerdote, a quien se designó como jefe de los que tenían a su cargo el santuario.
Los clanes meraritas
33 De Merari procedían los clanes de Majlí y Musí. Estos eran los clanes meraritas.
34 El total de los varones censados mayores de un mes llegó a seis mil doscientos.
35 El jefe de la familia patriarcal de los meraritas era Zuriel, hijo de Abijaíl.
Los clanes meraritas acampaban al norte del santuario.
36 Tenían a su cargo los tablones, es decir, los travesaños, postes y bases del armazón del santuario, junto con todos sus utensilios y todo lo necesario para su servicio. 37 También cuidaban de los postes que estaban alrededor del atrio, junto con sus bases, estacas y cuerdas.
La tribu de Leví
38 Moisés, Aarón y sus hijos acampaban delante del santuario, es decir, al este de la Tienda de reunión, por donde sale el sol, ya que tenían a su cargo el cuidado del santuario en representación de los israelitas.
Pero si algún extraño se acercaba al santuario era condenado a muerte.
39 Moisés y Aarón censaron a los levitas, tal como el Señor mismo se lo había ordenado. El total de los levitas mayores de un mes censados por clanes llegó a veintidós mil.
Los levitas y los primogénitos
40 El Señor dijo a Moisés: «Haz un censo de todos los primogénitos israelitas mayores de un mes, y registra sus nombres. 41 Apártame a los levitas en sustitución de todos los primogénitos israelitas, así como el ganado de los levitas en sustitución de todas las primeras crías del ganado de los israelitas. Yo soy el Señor».
42 Moisés hizo el censo de todos los primogénitos israelitas, conforme a lo que el Señor había mandado. 43 El total de los primogénitos mayores de un mes, anotados por nombre, llegó a veintidós mil doscientos setenta y tres.
44 El Señor dijo a Moisés: 45 «Apártame a los levitas en sustitución de todos los primogénitos de los israelitas, así como el ganado de los levitas en sustitución del ganado de los israelitas. Los levitas son míos. Yo soy el Señor. 46 Para rescatar a los doscientos setenta y tres primogénitos israelitas que exceden al número de levitas, 47 recaudarás cinco siclos de plata por cabeza, según la medida oficial del santuario, que pesa veinte guerás.[a] 48 Esa suma se la entregarás a Aarón y a sus hijos, como rescate por los israelitas que exceden a su número».
49 Moisés recaudó el dinero del rescate de los israelitas que excedían al número de los rescatados por los levitas. 50 En total recaudó mil trescientos sesenta y cinco siclos de plata, según la medida oficial del santuario.[b] 51 Luego entregó ese dinero a Aarón y a sus hijos, tal como el Señor mismo se lo había ordenado.

The Levites
3 This is the account of the family of Aaron and Moses(A) at the time the Lord spoke to Moses at Mount Sinai.(B)
2 The names of the sons of Aaron were Nadab the firstborn(C) and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.(D) 3 Those were the names of Aaron’s sons, the anointed priests,(E) who were ordained to serve as priests. 4 Nadab and Abihu, however, died before the Lord(F) when they made an offering with unauthorized fire before him in the Desert of Sinai.(G) They had no sons, so Eleazar and Ithamar(H) served as priests during the lifetime of their father Aaron.(I)
5 The Lord said to Moses, 6 “Bring the tribe of Levi(J) and present them to Aaron the priest to assist him.(K) 7 They are to perform duties for him and for the whole community(L) at the tent of meeting by doing the work(M) of the tabernacle. 8 They are to take care of all the furnishings of the tent of meeting, fulfilling the obligations of the Israelites by doing the work of the tabernacle. 9 Give the Levites to Aaron and his sons;(N) they are the Israelites who are to be given wholly to him.[a] 10 Appoint Aaron(O) and his sons to serve as priests;(P) anyone else who approaches the sanctuary is to be put to death.”(Q)
11 The Lord also said to Moses, 12 “I have taken the Levites(R) from among the Israelites in place of the first male offspring(S) of every Israelite woman. The Levites are mine,(T) 13 for all the firstborn are mine.(U) When I struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, I set apart for myself every firstborn in Israel, whether human or animal. They are to be mine. I am the Lord.”(V)
14 The Lord said to Moses in the Desert of Sinai,(W) 15 “Count(X) the Levites by their families and clans. Count every male a month old or more.”(Y) 16 So Moses counted them, as he was commanded by the word of the Lord.
17 These were the names of the sons of Levi:(Z)
Gershon,(AA) Kohath(AB) and Merari.(AC)
18 These were the names of the Gershonite clans:
Libni and Shimei.(AD)
19 The Kohathite clans:
Amram, Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel.(AE)
20 The Merarite clans:(AF)
Mahli and Mushi.(AG)
These were the Levite clans, according to their families.
21 To Gershon(AH) belonged the clans of the Libnites and Shimeites;(AI) these were the Gershonite clans. 22 The number of all the males a month old or more who were counted was 7,500. 23 The Gershonite clans were to camp on the west, behind the tabernacle.(AJ) 24 The leader of the families of the Gershonites was Eliasaph son of Lael. 25 At the tent of meeting the Gershonites were responsible for the care of the tabernacle(AK) and tent, its coverings,(AL) the curtain at the entrance(AM) to the tent of meeting,(AN) 26 the curtains of the courtyard(AO), the curtain at the entrance to the courtyard surrounding the tabernacle and altar,(AP) and the ropes(AQ)—and everything(AR) related to their use.
27 To Kohath(AS) belonged the clans of the Amramites, Izharites, Hebronites and Uzzielites;(AT) these were the Kohathite(AU) clans. 28 The number of all the males a month old or more(AV) was 8,600.[b] The Kohathites were responsible(AW) for the care of the sanctuary.(AX) 29 The Kohathite clans were to camp on the south side(AY) of the tabernacle. 30 The leader of the families of the Kohathite clans was Elizaphan(AZ) son of Uzziel. 31 They were responsible for the care of the ark,(BA) the table,(BB) the lampstand,(BC) the altars,(BD) the articles(BE) of the sanctuary used in ministering, the curtain,(BF) and everything related to their use.(BG) 32 The chief leader of the Levites was Eleazar(BH) son of Aaron, the priest. He was appointed over those who were responsible(BI) for the care of the sanctuary.(BJ)
33 To Merari belonged the clans of the Mahlites and the Mushites;(BK) these were the Merarite clans.(BL) 34 The number of all the males a month old or more(BM) who were counted was 6,200. 35 The leader of the families of the Merarite clans was Zuriel son of Abihail; they were to camp on the north side of the tabernacle.(BN) 36 The Merarites were appointed(BO) to take care of the frames of the tabernacle,(BP) its crossbars,(BQ) posts,(BR) bases, all its equipment, and everything related to their use,(BS) 37 as well as the posts of the surrounding courtyard(BT) with their bases, tent pegs(BU) and ropes.
38 Moses and Aaron and his sons were to camp to the east(BV) of the tabernacle, toward the sunrise, in front of the tent of meeting.(BW) They were responsible for the care of the sanctuary(BX) on behalf of the Israelites. Anyone else who approached the sanctuary was to be put to death.(BY)
39 The total number of Levites counted(BZ) at the Lord’s command by Moses and Aaron according to their clans, including every male a month old or more, was 22,000.(CA)
40 The Lord said to Moses, “Count all the firstborn Israelite males who are a month old or more(CB) and make a list of their names.(CC) 41 Take the Levites for me in place of all the firstborn of the Israelites,(CD) and the livestock of the Levites in place of all the firstborn of the livestock of the Israelites. I am the Lord.”(CE)
42 So Moses counted all the firstborn of the Israelites, as the Lord commanded him. 43 The total number of firstborn males a month old or more,(CF) listed by name, was 22,273.(CG)
44 The Lord also said to Moses, 45 “Take the Levites in place of all the firstborn of Israel, and the livestock of the Levites in place of their livestock. The Levites are to be mine.(CH) I am the Lord.(CI) 46 To redeem(CJ) the 273 firstborn Israelites who exceed the number of the Levites, 47 collect five shekels[c](CK) for each one, according to the sanctuary shekel,(CL) which weighs twenty gerahs.(CM) 48 Give the money for the redemption(CN) of the additional Israelites to Aaron and his sons.”(CO)
49 So Moses collected the redemption money(CP) from those who exceeded the number redeemed by the Levites. 50 From the firstborn of the Israelites(CQ) he collected silver weighing 1,365 shekels,[d](CR) according to the sanctuary shekel. 51 Moses gave the redemption money to Aaron and his sons, as he was commanded by the word of the Lord.

3 These also are the generations of Aaron and Moses in the day that the Lord spake with Moses in mount Sinai.
2 And these are the names of the sons of Aaron; Nadab the firstborn, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.
3 These are the names of the sons of Aaron, the priests which were anointed, whom he consecrated to minister in the priest's office.
4 And Nadab and Abihu died before the Lord, when they offered strange fire before the Lord, in the wilderness of Sinai, and they had no children: and Eleazar and Ithamar ministered in the priest's office in the sight of Aaron their father.
5 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
6 Bring the tribe of Levi near, and present them before Aaron the priest, that they may minister unto him.
7 And they shall keep his charge, and the charge of the whole congregation before the tabernacle of the congregation, to do the service of the tabernacle.
8 And they shall keep all the instruments of the tabernacle of the congregation, and the charge of the children of Israel, to do the service of the tabernacle.
9 And thou shalt give the Levites unto Aaron and to his sons: they are wholly given unto him out of the children of Israel.
10 And thou shalt appoint Aaron and his sons, and they shall wait on their priest's office: and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death.
11 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
12 And I, behold, I have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel instead of all the firstborn that openeth the matrix among the children of Israel: therefore the Levites shall be mine;
13 Because all the firstborn are mine; for on the day that I smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt I hallowed unto me all the firstborn in Israel, both man and beast: mine shall they be: I am the Lord.
14 And the Lord spake unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, saying,
15 Number the children of Levi after the house of their fathers, by their families: every male from a month old and upward shalt thou number them.
16 And Moses numbered them according to the word of the Lord, as he was commanded.
17 And these were the sons of Levi by their names; Gershon, and Kohath, and Merari.
18 And these are the names of the sons of Gershon by their families; Libni, and Shimei.
19 And the sons of Kohath by their families; Amram, and Izehar, Hebron, and Uzziel.
20 And the sons of Merari by their families; Mahli, and Mushi. These are the families of the Levites according to the house of their fathers.
21 Of Gershon was the family of the Libnites, and the family of the Shimites: these are the families of the Gershonites.
22 Those that were numbered of them, according to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, even those that were numbered of them were seven thousand and five hundred.
23 The families of the Gershonites shall pitch behind the tabernacle westward.
24 And the chief of the house of the father of the Gershonites shall be Eliasaph the son of Lael.
25 And the charge of the sons of Gershon in the tabernacle of the congregation shall be the tabernacle, and the tent, the covering thereof, and the hanging for the door of the tabernacle of the congregation,
26 And the hangings of the court, and the curtain for the door of the court, which is by the tabernacle, and by the altar round about, and the cords of it for all the service thereof.
27 And of Kohath was the family of the Amramites, and the family of the Izeharites, and the family of the Hebronites, and the family of the Uzzielites: these are the families of the Kohathites.
28 In the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, were eight thousand and six hundred, keeping the charge of the sanctuary.
29 The families of the sons of Kohath shall pitch on the side of the tabernacle southward.
30 And the chief of the house of the father of the families of the Kohathites shall be Elizaphan the son of Uzziel.
31 And their charge shall be the ark, and the table, and the candlestick, and the altars, and the vessels of the sanctuary wherewith they minister, and the hanging, and all the service thereof.
32 And Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest shall be chief over the chief of the Levites, and have the oversight of them that keep the charge of the sanctuary.
33 Of Merari was the family of the Mahlites, and the family of the Mushites: these are the families of Merari.
34 And those that were numbered of them, according to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, were six thousand and two hundred.
35 And the chief of the house of the father of the families of Merari was Zuriel the son of Abihail: these shall pitch on the side of the tabernacle northward.
36 And under the custody and charge of the sons of Merari shall be the boards of the tabernacle, and the bars thereof, and the pillars thereof, and the sockets thereof, and all the vessels thereof, and all that serveth thereto,
37 And the pillars of the court round about, and their sockets, and their pins, and their cords.
38 But those that encamp before the tabernacle toward the east, even before the tabernacle of the congregation eastward, shall be Moses, and Aaron and his sons, keeping the charge of the sanctuary for the charge of the children of Israel; and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death.
39 All that were numbered of the Levites, which Moses and Aaron numbered at the commandment of the Lord, throughout their families, all the males from a month old and upward, were twenty and two thousand.
40 And the Lord said unto Moses, Number all the firstborn of the males of the children of Israel from a month old and upward, and take the number of their names.
41 And thou shalt take the Levites for me (I am the Lord) instead of all the firstborn among the children of Israel; and the cattle of the Levites instead of all the firstlings among the cattle of the children of Israel.
42 And Moses numbered, as the Lord commanded him, all the firstborn among the children of Israel.
43 And all the firstborn males by the number of names, from a month old and upward, of those that were numbered of them, were twenty and two thousand two hundred and threescore and thirteen.
44 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
45 Take the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the children of Israel, and the cattle of the Levites instead of their cattle; and the Levites shall be mine: I am the Lord.
46 And for those that are to be redeemed of the two hundred and threescore and thirteen of the firstborn of the children of Israel, which are more than the Levites;
47 Thou shalt even take five shekels apiece by the poll, after the shekel of the sanctuary shalt thou take them: (the shekel is twenty gerahs:)
48 And thou shalt give the money, wherewith the odd number of them is to be redeemed, unto Aaron and to his sons.
49 And Moses took the redemption money of them that were over and above them that were redeemed by the Levites:
50 Of the firstborn of the children of Israel took he the money; a thousand three hundred and threescore and five shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary:
51 And Moses gave the money of them that were redeemed unto Aaron and to his sons, according to the word of the Lord, as the Lord commanded Moses.
