26 Después de la plaga, el Señor dijo a Moisés y al sacerdote Eleazar, hijo de Aarón: «Hagan un censo de toda la comunidad israelita por sus familias patriarcales. Enlisten a los varones mayores de veinte años, que sean aptos para la guerra en Israel».

Moisés y el sacerdote Eleazar hablaron con el pueblo en las llanuras de Moab, cerca del Jordán, a la altura de Jericó, y ordenaron levantar un censo de todos los varones mayores de veinte años, tal como el Señor se lo había mandado a Moisés.

Los israelitas que salieron de Egipto fueron los siguientes:

los carmitas.

Estos son los clanes de la tribu de Rubén. Su número llegó a cuarenta y tres mil setecientos treinta hombres.

Eliab fue el único hijo de Falú. Los hijos de Eliab fueron Nemuel, Datán y Abirán. Datán y Abirán fueron los mismos jefes de la comunidad que se rebelaron contra Moisés y Aarón, y estaban entre los seguidores de Coré cuando se rebelaron contra el Señor. 10 En esa ocasión, la tierra abrió su boca y se los tragó junto con Coré, muriendo también sus seguidores. El fuego devoró a doscientos cincuenta hombres, y este hecho los convirtió en una señal de advertencia. 11 Sin embargo, los hijos de Coré no perecieron.

12 Los hijos de Simeón formaron los siguientes clanes. De Nemuel, Jamín y Jaquín:

los nemuelitas,

los jaminitas,

los jaquinitas.

13 De Zera y Saúl:

los zeraítas,

los saulitas.

14 Estos son los clanes de la tribu de Simeón. Su número llegó a veintidós mil doscientos hombres.

15 Los hijos de Gad formaron los siguientes clanes. De Zefón, Jaguí y Suni:

los zefonitas,

los jaguitas,

los sunitas.

16 De Ozni y Erí:

los oznitas,

los eritas.

17 De Arodí y Arelí:

los aroditas,

los arelitas.

18 Estos son los clanes de la tribu de Gad. Su número llegó a cuarenta mil quinientos hombres.

19 Er y Onán eran hijos de Judá, pero ambos murieron en Canaán.

20 De sus hijos Selá, Fares y Zera proceden los siguientes clanes:

los selaítas,

los faresitas,

los zeraítas.

21 De Jezrón y de Jamul, hijos de Fares, proceden los clanes:

los jezronitas,

los jamulitas.

22 Estos son los clanes de la tribu de Judá. Su número llegó a setenta y seis mil quinientos hombres.

23 Los hijos de Isacar formaron los siguientes clanes. De Tola y Fuvá:

los fuvitas.

24 De Yasub y Simrón:

los simronitas.

25 Estos son los clanes de la tribu de Isacar. Su número llegó a sesenta y cuatro mil trescientos hombres.

26 De Séred, Elón y Yalel, hijos de Zabulón, proceden los siguientes clanes:

los sereditas,

los elonitas,

los yalelitas.

27 Estos son los clanes de la tribu de Zabulón. Su número llegó a sesenta mil quinientos hombres.

28 De Manasés y Efraín, hijos de José, proceden los siguientes clanes:

29 De Maquir, hijo de Manasés, y de Galaad, hijo de Maquir, proceden los siguientes clanes:

los maquiritas,

los galaaditas.

30 Los hijos de Galaad formaron los siguientes clanes. De Jezer y Jélec:

los jezeritas,

los jelequitas.

31 De Asriel y Siquén:

los asrielitas,

los siquenitas.

32 De Semidá y Héfer:

los semidaítas,

los heferitas.

33 Zelofejad, hijo de Héfer, no tuvo hijos, sino solo hijas, cuyos nombres eran Majlá, Noa, Joglá, Milca y Tirsá.

34 Estos son los clanes de la tribu de Manasés. Su número llegó a cincuenta y dos mil setecientos hombres.

35 De Sutela, Béquer y Taján, hijos de Efraín, proceden los siguientes clanes:

los sutelaítas,

los bequeritas,

los tajanitas.

36 De Erán, hijo de Sutela:

los eranitas.

37 Estos son los clanes de la tribu de Efraín. Su número llegó a treinta y dos mil quinientos hombres.

Todos estos clanes descendieron de José.

38 Los hijos de Benjamín formaron los siguientes clanes. De Bela, Asbel y Ajirán:

los belaítas,

los asbelitas,

los ajiranitas.

39 De Sufán y Jufán:

los sufanitas,

los jufanitas.

40 De Ard y Naamán, hijos de Bela, proceden los siguientes clanes:

los arditas,

los naamanitas.

41 Estos son los clanes de la tribu de Benjamín. Su número llegó a cuarenta y cinco mil seiscientos hombres.

42 De Suján, hijo de Dan:

los sujanitas,

que fueron los únicos clanes danitas. 43 Su número llegó a sesenta y cuatro mil cuatrocientos hombres.

44 De Imná, Isví y Beriá, hijos de Aser, proceden los siguientes clanes:

los imnaítas,

los isvitas,

los beriaítas.

45 De Héber y Malquiel, hijos de Beriá, proceden los siguientes clanes:

los heberitas,

los malquielitas.

46 Aser tuvo una hija llamada Sera.

47 Estos son los clanes de la tribu de Aser. Su número llegó a cincuenta y tres mil cuatrocientos hombres.

48 Los hijos de Neftalí formaron los siguientes clanes. De Yazel y Guní:

los yazelitas,

los gunitas.

49 De Jéser y Silén:

los jeseritas,

los silenitas.

50 Estos son los clanes de la tribu de Neftalí. Su número llegó a cuarenta y cinco mil cuatrocientos hombres.

51 Los hombres de Israel eran en total seiscientos un mil setecientos treinta.

Instrucciones para el reparto de la tierra

52 El Señor dijo a Moisés: 53 «Reparte la tierra entre estas tribus para que sea su heredad. Hazlo según el número de nombres registrados. 54 A la tribu más numerosa le darás la heredad más grande, y a la tribu menos numerosa le darás la heredad más pequeña. Cada tribu recibirá su heredad en proporción al número de censados. 55 La tierra deberá repartirse por sorteo, según el nombre de las tribus patriarcales. 56 El sorteo se hará entre todas las tribus, grandes y pequeñas».

Censo de los levitas

57 De los levitas Guersón, Coat y Merari proceden los siguientes clanes:

los guersonitas,

los coatitas,

los meraritas.

58 De los levitas proceden también los siguientes clanes:

los libnitas,

los hebronitas,

los majlitas,

los musitas,

los coreítas.

Coat fue el padre de Amirán. 59 La esposa de Amirán se llamaba Jocabed hija de Leví, y había nacido en Egipto. Los hijos que ella tuvo de Amirán fueron Aarón y Moisés, y su hermana Miriam. 60 Aarón fue el padre de Nadab, Abiú, Eleazar e Itamar, 61 pero Nadab y Abiú murieron bajo el juicio del Señor por haberle ofrecido fuego ilícito.

62 Los levitas mayores de un mes de edad fueron en total veintitrés mil. Pero no fueron censados junto con los demás israelitas porque no habrían de recibir heredad entre ellos.

63 Estos fueron los israelitas censados por Moisés y el sacerdote Eleazar, cuando los contaron en las llanuras de Moab, cerca del río Jordán, a la altura de Jericó. 64 Entre los censados no figuraba ninguno de los registrados en el censo que Moisés y el sacerdote Aarón habían hecho antes en el desierto del Sinaí, 65 porque el Señor había dicho que todos morirían en el desierto. 26 After that the blood of (the) guilty men was shed out, the Lord said to Moses and to Eleazar, the priest, [the] son of Aaron,

Reckon ye all the number of the sons of Israel, from twenty years and above (from twenty years of age and older), by their houses, and their kindreds, (yea,) all (the) men that be able to go forth to battles.

And so Moses and Eleazar, the priest, spake in the field places of Moab, over Jordan, against Jericho, (And so Moses and Eleazar, the priest, spoke on the plains of Moab, across the Jordan River, opposite Jericho,)

to them that were of twenty years and above (to those who were twenty years of age and older), as the Lord commanded; of which this is the number.

Reuben, the first begotten of Israel (Reuben, Israel’s first-born); the son of him was Hanoch, of whom came the family of Hanochites; and Pallu, of whom came the family of Palluites;

and Hezron, of whom came the family of Hezronites; and Carmi, of whom came the family of Carmites.

These were the families of the generation of Reuben, of which families (all) the number was found (to be) three and forty thousand (and) seven hundred and thirty.

The son of Pallu was Eliab;

the sons of him were Nemuel, and Dathan, and Abiram. These were Dathan and Abiram, [the] princes of the people, that rose against Moses and Aaron, in the rebelty of Korah, when they rebelled against the Lord (These were that Dathan and Abiram, the leaders of the people, who rose up against Moses and Aaron, in the rebellion of Korah, when they rebelled against the Lord);

10 and the earth opened his mouth, and devoured Korah, and full many men died, when the fire burnt two hundred men and fifty; and a great miracle was done, (and the earth opened its mouth, and devoured Korah, and a great many died, when the fire burned up two hundred and fifty men; and a great miracle was done,)

11 that when Korah perished, his sons perished not. (that when Korah died, his sons did not die.)

12 The sons of Simeon by their kindreds; Nemuel, of him was the family of Nemuelites; Jamin, of him the family of Jaminites; Jachin, of him the family of Jachinites;

13 Zerah, of him the family of Zarhites; Shaul, of him the family of Shaulites.

14 These were the families of Simeon, of which all the number was two and twenty thousand and two hundred.

15 The sons of Gad by their kindreds; Zephon, of him the family of Zephonites; Haggi, of him the family of Haggites; Shuni, of him the family of Shunites;

16 Ozni, of him the family of Oznites; Eri, of him the family of Erites;

17 Arod, of him the family of Arodites; Areli, of him the family of Arelites.

18 These were the families of Gad, of which all the number was forty thousand and five hundred.

19 The sons of Judah were Er and Onan, which both were dead in the land of Canaan. (The sons of Judah were Er and Onan, and both of them died in the land of Canaan.)

20 And the sons of Judah were these by their kindreds; Shelah, of whom came the family of Shelanites; Pharez, of him the family of Pharzites (Perez, of him the family of Perezites); Zerah, of him the family of Zarhites.

21 Soothly the sons of Pharez were Hezron (And the sons of Perez were Hezron), of him the family of Hezronites; and Hamul, of him the family of Hamulites.

22 These were the families of Judah, of which all the number was seventy thousand and five hundred.

23 The sons of Issachar by their kindreds; Tola, of him the family of Tolaites; Pua, of him the family of Punites;

24 Jashub, of him the family of Jashubites; Shimron, of him the family of Shimronites.

25 These were the kindreds of Issachar (These were the families of Issachar), of which (all) the number was four and sixty thousand and three hundred.

26 The sons of Zebulun by their kindreds; Sered, of him the family of Sardites; Elon, of him the family of Elonites; Jahleel, of him the family of Jahleelites.

27 These were the kindreds of Zebulun (These were the families of Zebulun), of which (all) the number was sixty thousand and five hundred.

28 The sons of Joseph by their kindreds were Manasseh and Ephraim.

29 Of Manasseh was born Machir, of him the family of Machirites. Machir begat Gilead, of him, the family of Gileadites.

30 Gilead had these sons; Jeezer, of him the family of Jeezerites; and Helek, of him the family of Helekites;

31 and Asriel, of him the family of Asrielites; and Shechem, of him the family of Shechemites;

32 and Shemida, of him the family of Shemidaites; and Hepher, of him the family of Hepherites.

33 Soothly Hepher was the father of Zelophehad, that had not sons, but only daughters; of which these were the names; Mahlah, and Noah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Tirzah.

34 These were the families of Manasseh, and (all) the number of them was two and fifty thousand and seven hundred.

35 Soothly the sons of Ephraim by their kindreds were these; Shuthelah, of him the family of Shuthalhites; Becher, of him the family of Bachrites; Tahan, of him the family of Tahanites.

36 Soothly the son of Shuthelah was Eran, of him the family of Eranites.

37 These were the kindreds of the sons of Ephraim (These were the families of Ephraim), of which (all) the number was two and thirty thousand and five hundred. These were the sons of Joseph, by their families.

38 The sons of Benjamin in their kindreds (These were the families of Benjamin); Bela, of him the family of Belaites; Ashbel, of him the family of Ashbelites; Ahiram, of him the family of Ahiramites;

39 Shupham, of him the family of Shuphamites; Hupham, of him the family of Huphamites.

40 The sons of Bela, (were) Ard and Naaman; of Ard, the family of Ardites; of Naaman, the family of Naamites.

41 These were the sons of Benjamin by their kindreds (These were the families of Benjamin), of which (all) the number was five and forty thousand and six hundred.

42 The sons of Dan by their kindreds; Shuham, of him the family of Shuhamites. These were the kindreds of Dan by their families (These were the families of Dan);

43 (and) all (of them) were Shuhamites, of which (all) the number was four and sixty thousand and four hundred.

44 The sons of Asher by their kindreds (These were the families of Asher); Jimna, of him the family of Jimnites; Jesui, of him the family of Jesuites; Beriah, of him the family of Beriites.

45 The sons of Beriah; Heber, of him the family of Heberites; and Malchiel, of him the family of Malchielites.

46 Soothly the name of the daughter of Asher was Serah.

47 These were the kindreds of the sons of Asher (These were the families of Asher), and (all) the number of them was four and fifty thousand and four hundred.

48 The sons of Naphtali by their kindreds; Jahzeel, of him the family of Jahzeelites; Guni, of him the family of Gunites;

49 Jezer, of him the family of Jezerites; (and) Shillem, of him the family of Shillemites.

50 These were the kindreds of the sons of Naphtali by their families (These were the families of Naphtali), of which (all) the number was five and forty thousand and four hundred.

51 This is the sum of the sons of Israel, that were numbered (who were listed, or registered), six hundred thousand and a thousand (and) seven hundred and thirty.

52 And the Lord spake to Moses, and said,

53 The land shall be parted to these, by the number of names into their possessions; (The land shall be divided into possessions for these tribes, according to the number of names listed;)

54 thou shalt give the greater part to [the] more men, and the less(er) part to [the] fewer men; possession shall be given to all by themselves, as they be numbered now; (thou shalt give the larger part to the larger group of people, and the smaller part to the smaller group of people; a possession shall be given to each by themselves, as they now be numbered, that is, in proportion to their number;)

55 so only that (the) lot part the land to lineages and to families.

56 Whatever thing befalleth by lot, either more (men), either fewer men, take that.

57 Also this is the number of the sons of Levi by their families; Gershon, of whom is the family of Gershonites; Kohath, of him the family of Kohathites; Merari, of him the family of Merarites.

58 These were the families of Levi; the family of Libni, the family of Hebron, the family of Mahli, the family of Mushi, the family of Korah. And soothly Kohath begat Amram,

59 which had a wife, Jochebed, the daughter of Levi, which daughter was born to him in Egypt. This Jochebed engendered to her husband Amram, (his two) sons, Aaron and Moses, and Marie, the sister of them. (who had a wife, Jochebed, who was the daughter of Levi, and she was born to him in Egypt. This Jochebed bare for her husband Amram, his two sons, Aaron and Moses, and their sister, Miriam.)

60 Nadab, and Abihu, and Eleazar, and Ithamar were begotten of Aaron;

61 of which Nadab and Abihu were dead, when they had offered alien fire before the Lord. (and Nadab and Abihu died, when they offered unholy fire before the Lord.)

62 And all that were numbered of this lineage were three and twenty thousand of male kind, from a month and above, which were not numbered among the sons of Israel, neither possession was given to them with other men. (And all who were listed, or registered, in this tribe were twenty-three thousand males, from one month of age and older, but they were not listed with the other Israelites, nor was any possession given to them among the other people.)

63 This is the number of the sons of Israel, that be described of Moses and Eleazar, [the] priest, in the field places of Moab, over Jordan, against Jericho; (These were all the Israelites listed by Moses and Eleazar, the priest, on the plains of Moab, across the Jordan River, opposite Jericho;)

64 among which none of them was that were numbered before of Moses and Aaron, in the desert of Sinai; (and there was not one among them who had been registered by Moses and Aaron before, in the Sinai Desert;)

65 for the Lord before-said, that all should die in the wilderness; and none of them dwelled alive, but Caleb, Jephunneh’s son, and Joshua, the son of Nun. (for the Lord had said before, that they would all die in the wilderness; and so none of them remained alive, but Caleb, Jephunneh’s son, and Joshua, the son of Nun.)

The Second Census

26 After the plague, the Lord said to Moses and Eleazar son of Aaron the priest, “Take a census of the entire Israelite community by their ancestral houses of those 20 years old or more who can serve in Israel’s army.”(A)

So Moses and Eleazar the priest said to them in the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho, “Take a census of those 20 years old or more, as the Lord had commanded Moses and the Israelites who came out of the land of Egypt.”(B)

Reuben(C) was the firstborn of Israel.
Reuben’s descendants:
the Hanochite clan from Hanoch;
the Palluite clan from Pallu;
the Hezronite clan from Hezron;
the Carmite clan from Carmi.
These were the Reubenite clans,
and their registered men numbered 43,730.
The son of Pallu was Eliab.
The sons of Eliab were Nemuel, Dathan, and Abiram.
(It was Dathan and Abiram, chosen by the community, who fought against Moses and Aaron; they and Korah’s followers fought against the Lord.(D) 10 The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them with Korah, when his followers died and the fire consumed 250 men.(E) They serve as a warning sign. 11 The sons of Korah, however, did not die.)

12 Simeon’s descendants by their clans:
the Nemuelite clan from Nemuel;[a](F)
the Jaminite clan from Jamin;
the Jachinite clan from Jachin;
13 the Zerahite clan from Zerah;
the Shaulite clan from Shaul.
14 These were the Simeonite clans, numbering 22,200 men.

15 Gad’s descendants by their clans:
the Zephonite clan from Zephon;
the Haggite clan from Haggi;
the Shunite clan from Shuni;
16 the Oznite clan from Ozni;
the Erite clan from Eri;
17 the Arodite clan from Arod;
the Arelite clan from Areli.
18 These were the Gadite clans numbered by their registered men: 40,500.

19 Judah’s sons included Er and Onan, but they died in the land of Canaan.(G) 20 Judah’s descendants by their clans:
the Shelanite clan from Shelah;
the Perezite clan from Perez;
the Zerahite clan from Zerah.
21 The descendants of Perez:
the Hezronite clan from Hezron;
the Hamulite clan from Hamul.
22 These were Judah’s clans numbered by their registered men: 76,500.

23 Issachar’s descendants by their clans:
the Tolaite clan from Tola;
the Punite clan from Puvah;[b](H)
24 the Jashubite clan from Jashub;
the Shimronite clan from Shimron.
25 These were Issachar’s clans numbered by their registered men: 64,300.

26 Zebulun’s descendants by their clans:
the Seredite clan from Sered;
the Elonite clan from Elon;
the Jahleelite clan from Jahleel.
27 These were the Zebulunite clans numbered by their registered men: 60,500.

28 Joseph’s descendants by their clans from Manasseh and Ephraim:
29 Manasseh’s descendants:
the Machirite clan from Machir.
Machir fathered Gilead;
the Gileadite clan from Gilead.
30 These were Gilead’s descendants:
the Iezerite clan from Iezer;
the Helekite clan from Helek;
31 the Asrielite clan from Asriel;
the Shechemite clan from Shechem;
32 the Shemidaite clan from Shemida;
the Hepherite clan from Hepher;
33 Zelophehad son of Hepher had no sons—only daughters. The names of Zelophehad’s daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.(I)
34 These were Manasseh’s clans, numbered by their registered men: 52,700.
35 These were Ephraim’s descendants by their clans:
the Shuthelahite clan from Shuthelah;
the Becherite clan from Becher;
the Tahanite clan from Tahan.
36 These were Shuthelah’s descendants:
the Eranite clan from Eran.
37 These were the Ephraimite clans numbered by their registered men: 32,500.
These were Joseph’s descendants by their clans.

38 Benjamin’s descendants by their clans:
the Belaite clan from Bela;
the Ashbelite clan from Ashbel;
the Ahiramite clan from Ahiram;
39 the Shuphamite clan from Shupham;[c]
the Huphamite clan from Hupham.
40 Bela’s descendants from Ard and Naaman:
the Ardite clan from Ard;
the Naamite clan from Naaman.
41 These were the Benjaminite clans numbered by their registered men: 45,600.

42 These were Dan’s descendants by their clans:
the Shuhamite clan from Shuham.
These were the clans of Dan by their clans.
43 All the Shuhamite clans numbered by their registered men: 64,400.

44 Asher’s descendants by their clans:
the Imnite clan from Imnah;
the Ishvite clan from Ishvi;
the Beriite clan from Beriah.
45 From Beriah’s descendants:
the Heberite clan from Heber;
the Malchielite clan from Malchiel.
46 And the name of Asher’s daughter was Serah.
47 These were the Asherite clans numbered by their registered men: 53,400.

48 Naphtali’s descendants by their clans:
the Jahzeelite clan from Jahzeel;
the Gunite clan from Guni;
49 the Jezerite clan from Jezer;
the Shillemite clan from Shillem.
50 These were the Naphtali clans numbered by their registered men: 45,400.

51 These registered Israelite men numbered 601,730.

52 The Lord spoke to Moses, 53 “The land is to be divided among them as an inheritance based on the number of names. 54 Increase the inheritance for a large tribe and decrease it for a small one. Each is to be given its inheritance according to those who were registered in it. 55 The land must be divided by lot; they will receive an inheritance according to the names of their ancestral tribes. 56 Each inheritance will be divided by lot among the larger and smaller tribes.”(J)

57 These were the Levites registered by their clans:
the Gershonite clan from Gershon;
the Kohathite clan from Kohath;
the Merarite clan from Merari.
58 These were the Levite family groups:
the Libnite clan,
the Hebronite clan,
the Mahlite clan,
the Mushite clan,
and the Korahite clan.(K)

Kohath was the ancestor of Amram. 59 The name of Amram’s wife was Jochebed, a descendant of Levi, born to Levi in Egypt. She bore to Amram: Aaron, Moses, and their sister Miriam. 60 Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar were born to Aaron, 61 but Nadab and Abihu died when they presented unauthorized fire before the Lord.(L) 62 Those registered were 23,000, every male one month old or more; they were not registered among the other Israelites, because no inheritance was given to them among the Israelites.

63 These were the ones registered by Moses and Eleazar the priest when they registered the Israelites on the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho. 64 But among them there was not one of those who had been registered by Moses and Aaron the priest when they registered the Israelites in the Wilderness of Sinai.(M) 65 For the Lord had said to them that they would all die in the wilderness. None of them was left except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
