A primeira profecia de Balaão
23 Balaão disse para o rei: “Levanta sete altares aqui e prepara sete novilhos e sete carneiros para serem sacrificados.” 2 Balaque fez como este lhe dissera e foi sacrificado em cada altar um novilho e um carneiro.
3 Então Balaão disse para o rei: “Fica aqui junto do holocausto e verei se o Senhor vem ao meu encontro. O que ele me disser, comunicar-to-ei.” Depois foi a um sítio mais elevado; 4 lá Deus encontrou-se com ele e Balaão disse-lhe: “Preparei sete altares e sacrifiquei um novilho e um carneiro em cada um.” 5 E o Senhor comunicou-lhe a mensagem que deveria transmitir a Balaque.
6 Quando Balaão regressou, o rei estava de pé ao lado dos holocaustos, com todos os altos conselheiros de Moabe.
7 Esta foi a mensagem que Balaão lhe trouxe:
“O rei Balaque, rei de Moabe, trouxe-me aqui
desde a terra de Aram[a],
desde as montanhas lá do oriente.
‘Vem’, disse, ‘amaldiçoa-me Jacob!’
8 Como poderei eu amaldiçoar o que Deus não amaldiçoou?
Como detestarei um povo que o Senhor não condena?
9 Estou a vê-lo do alto do monte,
observo-os do cimo da montanha.
Este povo é separado das outras gentes;
quer viver sem se misturar com outros,
com outras nações.
10 Quem contou os grãos de pó de Jacob
ou enumerou a quarta parte de Israel?
Se ao menos eu pudesse morrer tão feliz como morre um justo!
Se o meu fim pudesse ser como o deles!”
11 “Mas o que é que me fizeste?”, exclamou o rei Balaque. “Disse-te para amaldiçoares os meus inimigos e acabaste por abençoá-los!”
12 Mas Balaão replicou: “Posso eu falar seja o que for que o Senhor não me mande dizer?”
A segunda profecia de Balaão
13 Então Balaque tentou novamente: “Vem comigo a outro lugar; dali verás apenas uma parte de Israel: amaldiçoa ao menos só esses que vires!” 14 Então Balaque trouxe Balaão até aos campos de Zofim, subiu ao monte Pisga, levantou sete altares e ofereceu um novilho e um carneiro em cada um.
15 Balaão tornou a dizer ao rei: “Fica aqui, junto dos holocaustos, enquanto vou ali encontrar-me com o Senhor.”
16 E de novo o Senhor veio ter com Balaão e lhe disse o que devia proferir. 17 Por isso, regressou até onde estava o rei e os conselheiros moabitas, ao lado dos holocaustos.
“Que foi que te disse o Senhor?”, perguntou o rei ansioso.
18 E a sua resposta foi:
“Levanta-te, Balaque, e ouve.
Escuta-me tu, filho de Zípor.
19 Deus não é um homem para que possa mentir.
Ele não muda de intenções como fazem os seres humanos.
Alguma vez ele prometeu uma coisa
sem que tenha cumprido o que disse?
20 Ouve! Recebi ordem para os abençoar,
porque é Deus mesmo quem abençoa,
e não seria eu quem poderia alterar tal coisa!
21 Ele não vê desgraça em Jacob;
nem contemplará algum sofrimento em Israel.
O Senhor, o seu Deus, está com eles.
Ele é aclamado como seu Rei!
22 Deus o tirou do Egito.
Israel tem a força de um boi selvagem.
23 Não há maldição que possa ser lançada sobre Jacob.
Não há encantamento que consiga virar-se contra Israel.
Porque desde agora será dito de Jacob e de Israel:
‘Quantas maravilhas Deus fez por eles!’
24 Este povo levanta-se com o impulso de uma leoa.
Não descansarão enquanto não tiverem devorado a presa toda,
e enquanto não tiverem bebido todo o sangue!”
25 “Ao menos, já que não os amaldiçoas, não os abençoes!”, exclamou o rei.
26 Mas ele replicou-lhe: “Não te disse eu que havia de falar apenas o que o Senhor me dissesse?”
A terceira profecia de Balaão
27 Então Balaque insistiu: “Vou levar-te ainda para outro lugar. Talvez Deus te deixe amaldiçoá-los ali.” 28 Balaque levou Balaão para o cimo do monte Peor, sobranceiro ao deserto.
29 Balaão disse ao rei para construir sete altares e para sacrificar sete novilhos e sete carneiros. 30 Balaque fez conforme essa indicação e ofereceu os animais nos altares como anteriormente.

The Prophecies of Balaam
23 Then Balaam said to Balak, “Build seven altars for me here, and prepare seven bulls and seven rams for me here.” 2 Balak did just as Balaam had spoken, and Balak and Balaam offered up a bull and a ram on each altar. 3 Then Balaam said to Balak, “Stand beside your burnt offering, and I will go; perhaps the Lord will come to meet me, and whatever He shows me I will tell you.” So he went to a bare hill.
4 Now God met Balaam, and he said to Him, “I have set up the seven altars, and I have offered up a bull and a ram on each altar.” 5 Then the Lord (A)put a word in Balaam’s mouth and said, “Return to Balak, and you shall speak thus.” 6 So he returned to him, and behold, he was standing beside his burnt offering, he and all the leaders of Moab. 7 He took up his [a]discourse and said,
“From (B)Aram Balak has brought me,
Moab’s king from the mountains of the East,
‘(C)Come curse Jacob for me,
And come, denounce Israel!’
8 “(D)How shall I curse whom God has not cursed?
And how can I denounce whom the Lord has not denounced?
9 “As I see him from the top of the rocks,
And I look at him from the hills;
(E)Behold, a people who dwells apart,
And will not be reckoned among the nations.
10 “(F)Who can count the dust of Jacob,
Or number the fourth part of Israel?
(G)Let [b]me die the death of the upright,
(H)And let my end be like his!”
11 Then Balak said to Balaam, “What have you done to me? (I)I took you to curse my enemies, but behold, you have actually blessed them!” 12 He replied, “Must I not be careful to speak (J)what the Lord puts in my mouth?”
13 Then Balak said to him, “Please come with me to another place from where you may see them, although you will only see the extreme end of them and will not see all of them; and curse them for me from there.” 14 So he took him to the field of Zophim, to the top of Pisgah, and built seven altars and offered a bull and a ram on each altar. 15 And he said to Balak, “Stand here beside your burnt offering while I myself meet the Lord over there.” 16 Then the Lord met Balaam and (K)put a word in his mouth and said, “Return to Balak, and thus you shall speak.” 17 He came to him, and behold, he was standing beside his burnt offering, and the leaders of Moab with him. And Balak said to him, “What has the Lord spoken?” 18 Then he took up his [c]discourse and said,
“Arise, O Balak, and hear;
Give ear to me, O son of Zippor!
19 “(L)God is not a man, that He should lie,
Nor a son of man, that He should repent;
(M)Has He said, and will He not do it?
Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?
20 “Behold, I have received a command to bless;
(N)When He has blessed, then (O)I cannot revoke it.
21 “(P)He has not observed [d]misfortune in Jacob;
(Q)Nor has He seen trouble in Israel;
(R)The Lord his God is with him,
(S)And the shout of a king is among them.
22 “(T)God brings them out of Egypt,
He is for them like the (U)horns of the wild ox.
23 “(V)For there is no omen against Jacob,
Nor is there any divination against Israel;
At the proper time it shall be said to Jacob
And to Israel, what God has done!
24 “(W)Behold, a people rises like a lioness,
And as a lion it lifts itself;
It will not lie down until it devours the prey,
And drinks the blood of the slain.”
25 Then Balak said to Balaam, “Do not curse them at all nor bless them at all!” 26 But Balaam replied to Balak, “Did I not tell you, ‘[e](X)Whatever the Lord speaks, that I must do’?”
27 Then Balak said to Balaam, “Please come, I will take you to another place; perhaps it will be [f]agreeable with God that you curse them for me from there.” 28 So Balak took Balaam to the top of Peor which overlooks the [g]wasteland. 29 Balaam said to Balak, “Build seven altars for me here and prepare seven bulls and seven rams for me here.” 30 Balak did just as Balaam had said, and offered up a bull and a ram on each altar.
