La rebelión de Coré y sus secuaces
16 Coré, hijo de Izhar, nieto de Queat y biznieto de Leví, se confabuló con Datán y Abirán, hijos de Eliab, y con On, hijo de Pelet, de la descendencia de Rubén, 2 y se rebelaron contra Moisés junto con doscientos cincuenta israelitas, jefes de la comunidad y miembros del consejo, todos ellos personas de renombre. 3 Se amotinaron contra Moisés y Aarón y les dijeron:
— ¡Ya está bien de privilegios! Si toda la comunidad es santa y el Señor está en medio de ella, ¿por qué sólo ustedes se arrogan el derecho a presidir la comunidad del Señor?
4 Cuando Moisés oyó esto, se postró rostro en tierra. 5 Luego se dirigió a Coré y a todos sus secuaces y les dijo:
— Vengan mañana por la mañana y el Señor mostrará quién es suyo, quién le está consagrado y quién puede acercarse a él; a quien el Señor elija, ese podrá acercársele. 6 Procederán así: tú, Coré, y todos tus secuaces háganse con incensarios 7 y mañana, en presencia del Señor, pongan en ellos fuego e incienso. A quien el Señor escoja, ese será el consagrado. ¡Veremos quién se arroga privilegios, hijos de Leví!
8 Dijo además Moisés a Coré:
— Escúchenme, hijos de Leví: 9 ¿no les parece suficiente que el Dios de Israel los haya elegido de entre la comunidad de Israel, permitiendo que ustedes se acerquen a él, que estén al servicio de la Morada del Señor y que representen a la comunidad oficiando en su lugar? 10 El Señor les ha permitido, a ti y a tus hermanos levitas, que se acerquen a él; ¿van a reclamar también el sacerdocio? 11 En realidad, es contra el Señor contra quien se han amotinado tú y tus secuaces. Porque, ¿quién es Aarón para que murmuren contra él?
12 Moisés mandó llamar a Datán y Abirán, hijos de Eliab; pero ellos respondieron:
— No iremos. 13 ¿No es suficiente que nos hayas sacado de una tierra que mana leche y miel para hacernos morir en el desierto, que ahora pretendes también enseñorearte de nosotros? 14 A la vista está que no nos has traído a una tierra que mana leche y miel, ni nos has dado campos y viñas como heredad. ¿A quién quieres engañar ahora? ¡No iremos!
15 Moisés se enojó sobremanera y dijo al Señor:
— No aceptes su ofrenda. En cuanto a mí, ni un asno he tomado de ninguno de ellos, ni a ninguno de ellos he agraviado.
Desenlace de la rebelión
16 Moisés dijo a Coré:
— Mañana, tú y todos tus secuaces comparezcan junto con Aarón en presencia del Señor. 17 Que cada uno tome su incensario y ponga incienso en él, doscientos cincuenta incensarios en total; tú y Aarón traerán también su propio incensario.
18 Así pues, cada uno tomó su incensario y después de poner fuego y echar incienso en él, ocuparon su lugar a la entrada de la Tienda del encuentro, al igual que Moisés y Aarón. 19 Coré había reunido contra ellos a toda la comunidad a la entrada de la Tienda del encuentro. Entonces la gloria del Señor se manifestó a toda la comunidad, 20 y el Señor se dirigió a Moisés y a Aarón y les dijo:
21 — ¡Apártense de esa comunidad pues la voy a aniquilar en un instante!
22 Pero ellos se postraron sobre sus rostros y dijeron:
— Oh Dios, origen de toda vida, si ha sido uno solo el que pecó, ¿te enojarás contra toda la comunidad?
23 El Señor contestó a Moisés:
24 — Pide a la comunidad que se retire de los alrededores de las tiendas de Coré, Datán y Abirán.
25 Moisés se levantó y, junto con los ancianos de Israel, se dirigió adonde estaban Datán y Abirán. 26 Dijo entonces a la comunidad:
— Apártense de las tiendas de esos hombres impíos y no toquen ninguna cosa suya si no quieren perecer a causa de todos sus pecados.
27 Así lo hicieron; se apartaron de los alrededores de las tiendas de Coré, de Datán y de Abirán, mientras estos habían salido y estaban a las puertas de sus tiendas, con sus mujeres y sus hijos, incluidos los más pequeños. 28 Y Moisés dijo:
— Ahora conocerán que es el Señor quien me ha enviado para hacer todo esto, y que no lo he hecho por mi propia voluntad. 29 Si estos hombres mueren de muerte natural o siguiendo el destino común de todos los humanos, entonces no es el Señor quien me ha enviado. 30 Pero si el Señor hace algo extraordinario y la tierra, abriendo su boca, los traga con todas sus pertenencias, de suerte que desciendan vivos al reino de los muertos, entonces sabrán que estos hombres han menospreciado al Señor.
31 Apenas terminó Moisés de decir todas estas palabras, cuando la tierra que estaba debajo de ellos 32 abrió su boca y se los tragó, junto con sus casas; lo mismo les ocurrió a todos los secuaces de Coré y a todas sus pertenencias. 33 Descendieron vivos al reino de los muertos; la tierra se cerró sobre ellos y desaparecieron de en medio de la comunidad. 34 Al oír sus gritos, todos los israelitas que estaban cerca de ellos huyeron diciendo: “¡No sea que también a nosotros nos trague la tierra!”.
35 Salió entonces un fuego de la presencia del Señor que devoró a los doscientos cincuenta hombres que estaban ofreciendo el incienso.

La rebelión de Coré, Datán y Abirán
16 Coré, que era hijo de Izar, nieto de Coat y bisnieto de Leví, y los rubenitas Datán y Abirán, hijos de Eliab, y On, hijo de Pélet, 2 se atrevieron a sublevarse contra Moisés, con el apoyo de doscientos cincuenta israelitas. Todos ellos eran personas de renombre y líderes de la comunidad que habían sido nombrados miembros del consejo. 3 Se reunieron para oponerse a Moisés y a Aarón, y les dijeron:
—¡Ustedes han ido ya demasiado lejos! Si toda la comunidad es santa, lo mismo que sus miembros, y el Señor está en medio de ellos, ¿por qué se creen ustedes los dueños de la comunidad del Señor?
4 Cuando Moisés escuchó lo que le decían, cayó rostro en tierra ante ellos, 5 y respondió a Coré y a todo su grupo:
—Mañana el Señor mostrará quién es suyo y quién es santo. Será él quien declare quién es su escogido, y hará que se le acerque. 6 Coré, esto es lo que tú y tu gente harán: tomarán incensarios 7 y mañana les pondrán fuego e incienso en la presencia del Señor. El escogido del Señor será el que sea santo. ¡Son ustedes, hijos de Leví, los que han ido demasiado lejos!
8 Moisés dijo a Coré:
—¡Escúchenme ahora, levitas! 9 ¿Les parece poco que el Dios de Israel los haya separado del resto de la comunidad para que estén cerca de él, ministren en el santuario del Señor y se distingan como servidores de la comunidad? 10 Dios mismo los ha puesto a su lado, a ti y a todos los levitas, ¿y ahora quieren también el sacerdocio? 11 Tú y tu gente se han reunido para oponerse al Señor, porque ¿quién es Aarón para que murmuren contra él?
12 Moisés mandó llamar a Datán y Abirán, hijos de Eliab, pero ellos contestaron:
—¡No iremos! 13 ¿Te parece poco habernos sacado de la tierra donde abundan la leche y la miel, para que ahora quieras matarnos en este desierto y dártelas de gobernante con nosotros? 14 Lo cierto es que tú no has logrado llevarnos a esa tierra donde abundan la leche y la miel; tampoco nos has dado posesión de campos y viñas. Lo único que quieres es seguir engañando[a] a este pueblo. ¡Pues no iremos!
15 Entonces Moisés, sumamente enojado, dijo al Señor:
—No aceptes la ofrenda que te traigan, que yo de ellos no he tomado ni siquiera un asno ni les he hecho ningún daño.
16 A Coré, Moisés le dijo:
—Tú y tu gente y Aarón se presentarán mañana ante el Señor. 17 Cada uno de ustedes se acercará al Señor con su incensario lleno de incienso, es decir, se acercarán con doscientos cincuenta incensarios. También tú y Aarón llevarán los suyos.
18 Así que cada uno, con su incensario lleno de fuego e incienso, se puso de pie a la entrada de la Tienda de reunión, junto con Moisés y Aarón. 19 Cuando Coré hubo reunido a toda su gente en contra de Moisés y Aarón a la entrada de la Tienda de reunión, la gloria del Señor se apareció ante todos ellos. 20 Entonces el Señor dijo a Moisés y a Aarón:
21 —Apártense de esta gente para que yo la consuma de una vez por todas.
22 Pero Moisés y Aarón se postraron rostro en tierra y exclamaron:
—Oh Dios, Dios de toda la humanidad:[b] un solo hombre ha pecado, ¿y vas tú a enojarte con todos ellos?
23 Entonces el Señor dijo a Moisés:
24 —Ordénales que se alejen de las tiendas de Coré, Datán y Abirán.
25 Moisés y los ancianos jefes de Israel fueron adonde estaban Datán y Abirán. 26 Entonces Moisés advirtió a la gente:
—¡Aléjense de las tiendas de estos impíos! No toquen ninguna de sus pertenencias para que ustedes no perezcan por los pecados de ellos.
27 El pueblo se alejó de las tiendas de Coré, Datán y Abirán. Los dos últimos habían salido a la entrada de sus tiendas y estaban allí, de pie, con sus esposas y todos sus hijos.
28 Moisés siguió diciendo:
—Ahora van a saber si el Señor me ha enviado a hacer todas estas cosas o si estoy actuando por mi cuenta. 29 Si estos hombres mueren de muerte natural, como es el destino de todos los hombres, eso querrá decir que el Señor no me ha enviado. 30 Pero si el Señor crea algo nuevo, hace que la tierra se abra y se los trague con todas sus pertenencias, de tal manera que desciendan vivos a los dominios de la muerte;[c] entonces sabrán que estos hombres menospreciaron al Señor.
31 Tan pronto como Moisés terminó de hablar, la tierra se abrió debajo de ellos; 32 se abrió y se los tragó, a ellos y a sus familias, junto con la gente y las posesiones de Coré. 33 Bajaron vivos a los dominios de la muerte, junto con todo lo que tenían, y la tierra se cerró sobre ellos. De este modo fueron eliminados de la comunidad. 34 Al oírlos gritar, todos los israelitas huyeron de allí exclamando:
—¡Corramos, no sea que la tierra nos trague también a nosotros!
35 Y los doscientos cincuenta hombres que ofrecían incienso fueron consumidos por el fuego del Señor.
Los incensarios
36 El Señor dijo a Moisés: 37 «Ya que ahora los incensarios están consagrados a mí, ordena a Eleazar, hijo del sacerdote Aarón, que los retire del rescoldo y que esparza las brasas. 38 Toma los incensarios de aquellos que pecaron a costa de su vida y haz con ellos láminas para recubrir el altar. Ahora están consagrados porque fueron presentados ante el Señor y serán así una señal para los israelitas».
39 Entonces el sacerdote Eleazar recogió esos incensarios de bronce y con ellos mandó hacer láminas para recubrir el altar. 40 Las láminas quedaron allí, como advertencia a los israelitas, para que ninguno que no fuera descendiente de Aarón ni estuviera autorizado se atreviera a ofrecer incienso ante el Señor; de lo contrario, le sucedería lo mismo que a Coré y su gente, tal como el Señor se lo había advertido por medio de Moisés.
Aarón intercede por el pueblo
41 Al día siguiente, toda la congregación de los israelitas volvió a murmurar contra Moisés y Aarón, alegando:
—Ustedes mataron al pueblo del Señor.
42 Como la congregación empezó a amotinarse contra Moisés y Aarón, estos se dirigieron a la Tienda de reunión. De repente la nube cubrió la Tienda y apareció la gloria del Señor. 43 Entonces Moisés y Aarón se detuvieron frente a la Tienda de reunión 44 y el Señor dijo a Moisés:
45 —Apártate de esta gente, para que yo la consuma de una vez por todas.
Ellos se postraron rostro en tierra 46 y Moisés dijo a Aarón:
—Toma tu incensario y pon en él algunas brasas del altar, agrégale incienso y vete corriendo adonde está la congregación, para pedir perdón por ellos, porque la ira del Señor se ha desbordado y una desgracia ha caído sobre ellos.
47 Aarón hizo lo que Moisés dijo y corrió a ponerse en medio de la asamblea. La desgracia de parte de Dios ya había empezado entre el pueblo, así que Aarón ofreció incienso y pidió perdón por el pecado del pueblo. 48 Se puso entre los vivos y los muertos, y así detuvo la plaga. 49 Con todo, catorce mil setecientas personas murieron por la plaga, sin contar las que perdieron la vida por causa de Coré. 50 Una vez que cesó la plaga, Aarón volvió a la entrada de la Tienda de reunión, donde estaba Moisés.

La rebelión de Coré
16 1-2 Coré era un levita de la familia de Quehat, y su padre se llamaba Ishar. Coré tenía tres amigos de la tribu de Rubén: Datán y Abiram, que eran hijos de Eliab, y On, hijo de Pélet. Ninguno de ellos quería que Moisés fuera su jefe, y a ellos se les unieron doscientos cincuenta jefes israelitas que eran consejeros de la gente y muy respetados por todos.
3 Coré y su grupo fueron a decirles a Moisés y a Aarón:
—¡Ya estamos hartos de que ustedes se crean los jefes de todos nosotros! Dios está con todo el pueblo, y a todos nos ha elegido para servirle. ¿Por qué quieren hacerlo todo?
4 Cuando Moisés oyó esto, se tiró de cara al suelo, 5-7 y les dijo a Coré y a su grupo:
—¡Ustedes, descendientes de Leví, son los que me tienen harto! Vengan mañana temprano con su brasero para quemar incienso y pónganlo delante de Dios. Entonces Dios elegirá a los que él quiera que le sirvan en el santuario, y sólo ellos podrán hacerlo.
8 Luego Moisés le dijo a Coré:
—¡Escúchame, tú y los descendientes de Leví que están contigo! 9 ¿Les parece poco que Dios los haya elegido de entre todos los israelitas para que le sirvan en su santuario? 10 Dios los eligió a ustedes para que estén cerca de él. ¿Por qué ahora quieren ser también sacerdotes? 11 No se están quejando y rebelando contra Aarón sino contra Dios.
12 Luego Moisés mandó llamar a Datán y a Abiram, pero ellos le respondieron:
«No iremos. 13-14 Bastante daño nos has hecho con sacarnos de un país en donde siempre había abundancia de alimentos como lo era Egipto. Tú prometiste llevarnos a un territorio con muchos campos y muchas viñas, en donde siempre habría abundancia de alimentos. ¡Pero sólo nos trajiste a morir a un desierto donde no hay nada bueno! ¿Y aun así quieres que te obedezcamos y te sigamos? ¿Crees que estamos ciegos? ¡No queremos verte, ni hablarte!»
15 Moisés se enojó muchísimo y le dijo a Dios: «No aceptes sus ofrendas, Dios mío. Yo nunca les he hecho ningún daño, y ellos jamás me han dado nada. ¿Cómo pueden decir que me aprovecho de ellos?»
16-17 Luego Moisés le recordó a Coré que debía venir al día siguiente con Aarón y los doscientos cincuenta descendientes de Leví, y traer sus braseros para quemar incienso delante de Dios.
Dios castiga a Coré y a sus compañeros
18-19 Al día siguiente, Coré reunió a todos sus compañeros frente al santuario para enfrentarse a Moisés y a Aarón. Cada uno llevaba su brasero encendido. Entonces Dios se presentó con toda su gloria delante del pueblo, 20 y les dijo a Moisés y a Aarón:
21 —¡Aléjense de esta gente, porque ahora mismo los voy a destruir a todos!
22 Moisés y Aarón se tiraron de cara al suelo, y le dijeron a Dios:
—Dios mío, tú que nos das vida a todos, ¡no los mates! ¿Vas a destruirlos por culpa de un solo hombre?
23 Dios le respondió a Moisés:
24 —Diles a todos los israelitas que se alejen de las tiendas de campaña donde están Coré, Datán y Abiram.
25 Moisés se levantó y fue a donde estaban Datán y Abiram. Con él iban los ancianos que eran jefes del pueblo. 26 Y Moisés le dijo a todo el pueblo: «Aléjense de las tiendas de esos malvados, y ni siquiera toquen lo que les pertenece. No sea que por su culpa mueran también ustedes».
27 El pueblo se alejó de Datán, Abiram y Coré, que estaban a la entrada de sus tiendas, con sus mujeres y sus hijos. 28 Entonces Moisés dijo:
«Ahora verán que yo sólo sigo órdenes de Dios, y no actúo por mi propia cuenta. 29 Si esta gente muere normalmente, como cualquiera de nosotros, entonces significa que yo hago las cosas por mi cuenta. 30 Pero si Dios hace algo extraordinario, y se abre la tierra y se los traga vivos, no habrá duda de que ellos se rebelaron contra Dios».
31 En cuanto Moisés terminó de hablar, la tierra se abrió 32 y se tragó vivos a todos los que habían seguido a Coré, junto con sus familias y todas sus pertenencias. 33 Así fue como desapareció toda aquella gente.
34 Al ver esto, todo el pueblo salió corriendo y gritando: «¡Vámonos de aquí! ¡No sea que también a nosotros nos trague la tierra!»
35 Enseguida, Dios envió un fuego, y los doscientos cincuenta descendientes de Leví murieron quemados.
36 Luego Dios le dijo a Moisés:
37-38 «Dile a Eleazar que les quite los braseros a esos malvados y apague el fuego que todavía tienen. Yo he purificado ya los braseros con fuego, y ahora los descendientes de Aarón los usarán para mi servicio. Hagan láminas con el metal de los braseros, y cubran con ellas el altar. Así todos los israelitas tendrán presente lo que pasó y quedarán advertidos».
39-40 Eleazar hizo todo tal y como Dios se lo había ordenado a Moisés, y los israelitas quedaron advertidos de que nadie podía acercarse al altar para quemar incienso, a menos que fuera descendiente de Aarón. De lo contrario podría perder la vida como Coré y sus compañeros.
El pueblo vuelve a rebelarse
41-43 Al día siguiente, todo el pueblo se reunió y empezó a acusar a Moisés y a Aarón. Querían hacerles daño y les decían: «¡Por culpa de ustedes se está muriendo el pueblo de Dios!»
Entonces ellos dos entraron en el santuario, y la nube los cubrió. Allí Dios se presentó con toda su gloria, 44 y le dijo a Moisés: 45 «Aléjense de esta gente, porque la voy a destruir ahora mismo».
Moisés y Aarón se tiraron de cara al suelo, 46 y Moisés le dijo a Aarón: «Dios está muy enojado, y está castigando a la gente. Así que toma el brasero, ponle carbones encendidos del altar, y échale incienso; ve luego a donde están los israelitas, y pídele a Dios que los perdone».
47 Aarón hizo lo que Moisés le dijo, y fue a donde estaba el pueblo. Al ver que Dios los estaba castigando, empezó a quemar incienso y a pedirle a Dios que los perdonara. 48 Aarón, por su parte, se paró entre la gente que ya estaba muerta y la que todavía estaba viva, y así detuvo el castigo de Dios.
49 Ese día murieron catorce mil setecientas personas, sin contar a las que habían muerto junto con Coré.
50 Cuando dejó de morir la gente, Aarón regresó al santuario para reunirse con Moisés.

16 Now Korah son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, with Dathan and Abiram sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took men,
2 And they rose up before Moses, with certain of the Israelites, 250 princes or leaders of the congregation called to the assembly, men well known and of distinction.
3 And they gathered together against Moses and Aaron, and said to them, [Enough of you!] You take too much upon yourselves, seeing that all the congregation is holy, every one of them, and the Lord is among them. Why then do you lift yourselves up above the assembly of the Lord?
4 And when Moses heard it, he fell upon his face.
5 And he said to Korah and all his company, In the morning the Lord will show who are His and who is holy, and will cause him to come near to Him; him whom He has chosen will He cause to come near to Him.(A)
6 Do this: Take censers, Korah and all your company,
7 And put fire in them and put incense upon them before the Lord tomorrow; and the man whom the Lord chooses shall be holy. You take too much upon yourselves, you sons of Levi.
8 And Moses said to Korah, Hear, I pray you, you sons of Levi:
9 Does it seem but a small thing to you that the God of Israel has separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to Himself to do the service of the tabernacle of the Lord and to stand before the congregation to minister to them,
10 And that He has brought you near to Him, and all your brethren the sons of Levi with you? Would you seek the priesthood also?
11 Therefore you and all your company are gathered together against the Lord. And Aaron, what is he that you murmur against him?
12 And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and they said, We will not come up.
13 Is it a small thing that you have brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey to kill us in the wilderness, but you must also make yourself a prince over us?
14 Moreover, you have not brought us into a land that flows with milk and honey or given us an inheritance of fields and vineyards. Will you bore out the eyes of these men? We will not come up!
15 And Moses was very angry and said to the Lord, Do not respect their offering! I have not taken one donkey from them, nor have I hurt one of them.
16 And Moses said to Korah, You and all your company be before the Lord tomorrow, you and they and Aaron.
17 And let every man take his censer and put incense upon it and bring before the Lord every man his censer, 250 censers; you also and Aaron, each his censer.
18 So they took every man his censer, and they put fire in them and laid incense upon it, and they stood at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting with Moses and Aaron.
19 Then Korah assembled all the congregation against Moses and Aaron before the entrance of the Tent of Meeting, and the glory of the Lord appeared to all the congregation.
20 And the Lord said to Moses and Aaron,
21 Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.
22 And they fell upon their faces, and said, O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin and will You be angry with all the congregation?
23 And the Lord said to Moses,
24 Say to the congregation, Get away from around the tents of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.
25 Then Moses rose up and went to Dathan and Abiram, and the elders of Israel followed him.
26 And he said to the congregation, Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest you be consumed in all their sins.
27 So they got away from around the tents of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. And Dathan and Abiram came out and stood in the door of their tents with their wives, and their sons, and their little ones.
28 And Moses said, By this you shall know that the Lord has sent me to do all these works, for I do not act of my own accord:
29 If these men die the common death of all men or if [only] what happens to everyone happens to them, then the Lord has not sent me.
30 But if the Lord causes a new thing [to happen], and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them up, with all that belongs to them, and they go down alive into Sheol (the place of the dead), then you shall understand that these men have provoked (spurned, despised) the Lord!
31 As soon as he stopped speaking, the ground under the offenders split apart
32 And the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them and their households and [Korah and] all [his] men and all their possessions.(B)
33 They and all that belonged to them went down alive into Sheol (the place of the dead); and the earth closed upon them, and they perished from among the assembly.
34 And all Israel who were round about them fled at their cry, for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up also.
35 And fire came forth from the Lord and devoured the 250 men who offered the incense.
36 And the Lord said to Moses,
37 Speak to Eleazar son of Aaron, the priest, that he take up the censers out of the burning and scatter the fire at a distance. For the censers are hallowed—
38 The censers of these men who have sinned against themselves and at the cost of their own lives. Let the censers be made into hammered plates for a covering of the altar [of burnt offering], for they were used in offering before the Lord and therefore they are sacred. They shall be a sign [of warning] to the Israelites.
39 Eleazar the priest took the bronze censers with which the Levites who were burned had offered incense, and they were hammered into broad sheets for a covering of the [brazen] altar [of burnt offering],
40 To be a memorial [a warning forever] to the Israelites, so that no outsider, that is, no one not of the descendants of Aaron, should come near to offer incense before the Lord, lest he become as Korah and as his company, as the Lord said to Eleazar through Moses.
41 But on the morrow all the congregation of the Israelites murmured against Moses and Aaron, saying, You have killed the people of the Lord.
42 When the congregation was gathered against Moses and Aaron, they looked at the Tent of Meeting, and behold, the cloud covered it and they saw the Lord’s glory.
43 And Moses and Aaron came to the front of the Tent of Meeting.
44 And the Lord said to Moses,
45 Get away from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment. And Moses and Aaron fell on their faces.
46 And Moses said to Aaron, Take a censer and put fire in it from off the altar and lay incense on it, and carry it quickly to the congregation and make atonement for them. For there is wrath gone out from the Lord; the plague has begun!
47 So Aaron took the burning censer as Moses commanded, and ran into the midst of the congregation; and behold, the plague was begun among the people; and he put on the incense and made atonement for the people.
48 And he stood between the dead and the living, and the plague was stayed.
49 Now those who died in the plague were 14,700, besides those who died in the matter of Korah.
50 And Aaron returned to Moses to the door of the Tent of Meeting, since the plague was stayed.

Korah, Dathan and Abiram
16 Korah(A) son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and certain Reubenites—Dathan and Abiram(B), sons of Eliab,(C) and On son of Peleth—became insolent[a] 2 and rose up against Moses.(D) With them were 250 Israelite men, well-known community leaders who had been appointed members of the council.(E) 3 They came as a group to oppose Moses and Aaron(F) and said to them, “You have gone too far! The whole community is holy,(G) every one of them, and the Lord is with them.(H) Why then do you set yourselves above the Lord’s assembly?”(I)
4 When Moses heard this, he fell facedown.(J) 5 Then he said to Korah and all his followers: “In the morning the Lord will show who belongs to him and who is holy,(K) and he will have that person come near him.(L) The man he chooses(M) he will cause to come near him. 6 You, Korah, and all your followers(N) are to do this: Take censers(O) 7 and tomorrow put burning coals(P) and incense(Q) in them before the Lord. The man the Lord chooses(R) will be the one who is holy.(S) You Levites have gone too far!”
8 Moses also said to Korah, “Now listen, you Levites! 9 Isn’t it enough(T) for you that the God of Israel has separated you from the rest of the Israelite community and brought you near himself to do the work at the Lord’s tabernacle and to stand before the community and minister to them?(U) 10 He has brought you and all your fellow Levites near himself, but now you are trying to get the priesthood too.(V) 11 It is against the Lord that you and all your followers have banded together. Who is Aaron that you should grumble(W) against him?(X)”
12 Then Moses summoned Dathan and Abiram,(Y) the sons of Eliab. But they said, “We will not come!(Z) 13 Isn’t it enough that you have brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey(AA) to kill us in the wilderness?(AB) And now you also want to lord it over us!(AC) 14 Moreover, you haven’t brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey(AD) or given us an inheritance of fields and vineyards.(AE) Do you want to treat these men like slaves[b]?(AF) No, we will not come!(AG)”
15 Then Moses became very angry(AH) and said to the Lord, “Do not accept their offering. I have not taken so much as a donkey(AI) from them, nor have I wronged any of them.”
16 Moses said to Korah, “You and all your followers are to appear before the Lord tomorrow—you and they and Aaron.(AJ) 17 Each man is to take his censer and put incense in it—250 censers in all—and present it before the Lord. You and Aaron are to present your censers also.(AK)” 18 So each of them took his censer,(AL) put burning coals and incense in it, and stood with Moses and Aaron at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 19 When Korah had gathered all his followers in opposition to them(AM) at the entrance to the tent of meeting, the glory of the Lord(AN) appeared to the entire assembly. 20 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 21 “Separate yourselves(AO) from this assembly so I can put an end to them at once.”(AP)
22 But Moses and Aaron fell facedown(AQ) and cried out, “O God, the God who gives breath to all living things,(AR) will you be angry with the entire assembly(AS) when only one man sins?”(AT)
23 Then the Lord said to Moses, 24 “Say to the assembly, ‘Move away from the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram.’”
25 Moses got up and went to Dathan and Abiram, and the elders of Israel(AU) followed him. 26 He warned the assembly, “Move back from the tents of these wicked men!(AV) Do not touch anything belonging to them, or you will be swept away(AW) because of all their sins.(AX)” 27 So they moved away from the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram.(AY) Dathan and Abiram had come out and were standing with their wives, children(AZ) and little ones at the entrances to their tents.(BA)
28 Then Moses said, “This is how you will know(BB) that the Lord has sent me(BC) to do all these things and that it was not my idea: 29 If these men die a natural death and suffer the fate of all mankind, then the Lord has not sent me.(BD) 30 But if the Lord brings about something totally new, and the earth opens its mouth(BE) and swallows them, with everything that belongs to them, and they go down alive into the realm of the dead,(BF) then you will know that these men have treated the Lord with contempt.(BG)”
31 As soon as he finished saying all this, the ground under them split apart(BH) 32 and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them(BI) and their households, and all those associated with Korah, together with their possessions. 33 They went down alive into the realm of the dead,(BJ) with everything they owned; the earth closed over them, and they perished and were gone from the community. 34 At their cries, all the Israelites around them fled, shouting, “The earth is going to swallow us too!”
35 And fire came out from the Lord(BK) and consumed(BL) the 250 men who were offering the incense.
36 The Lord said to Moses, 37 “Tell Eleazar(BM) son of Aaron, the priest, to remove the censers(BN) from the charred remains and scatter the coals some distance away, for the censers are holy— 38 the censers of the men who sinned at the cost of their lives.(BO) Hammer the censers into sheets to overlay the altar,(BP) for they were presented before the Lord and have become holy. Let them be a sign(BQ) to the Israelites.”
39 So Eleazar the priest(BR) collected the bronze censers brought by those who had been burned to death,(BS) and he had them hammered out to overlay the altar, 40 as the Lord directed him through Moses. This was to remind the Israelites that no one except a descendant of Aaron should come to burn incense(BT) before the Lord,(BU) or he would become like Korah and his followers.(BV)
41 The next day the whole Israelite community grumbled against Moses and Aaron. “You have killed the Lord’s people,” they said.
42 But when the assembly gathered in opposition(BW) to Moses and Aaron and turned toward the tent of meeting, suddenly the cloud covered it and the glory of the Lord(BX) appeared. 43 Then Moses and Aaron went to the front of the tent of meeting, 44 and the Lord said to Moses, 45 “Get away from this assembly so I can put an end(BY) to them at once.” And they fell facedown.
46 Then Moses said to Aaron, “Take your censer(BZ) and put incense in it, along with burning coals from the altar, and hurry to the assembly(CA) to make atonement(CB) for them. Wrath has come out from the Lord;(CC) the plague(CD) has started.” 47 So Aaron did as Moses said, and ran into the midst of the assembly. The plague had already started among the people,(CE) but Aaron offered the incense and made atonement for them. 48 He stood between the living and the dead, and the plague stopped.(CF) 49 But 14,700 people died from the plague, in addition to those who had died because of Korah.(CG) 50 Then Aaron returned to Moses at the entrance to the tent of meeting, for the plague had stopped.[c]
