El pueblo se rebela
14 Aquella noche toda la comunidad israelita se puso a gritar y a llorar. 2 En sus murmuraciones contra Moisés y Aarón, la comunidad decía: «¡Cómo quisiéramos haber muerto en Egipto o en este desierto! 3 ¿Para qué nos ha traído el Señor a esta tierra? ¿Para morir atravesados por la espada y que nuestras esposas y nuestros niños se conviertan en botín de guerra? ¿No sería mejor que volviéramos a Egipto?». 4 Y unos a otros se decían: «¡Escojamos un jefe que nos lleve a Egipto!».
5 Entonces Moisés y Aarón cayeron rostro en tierra ante toda la comunidad israelita. 6 Allí estaban también Josué, hijo de Nun, y Caleb, hijo de Jefone, los cuales habían participado en la exploración de la tierra. Ambos se rasgaron las vestiduras en señal de duelo 7 y dijeron a toda la comunidad israelita:
—La tierra que recorrimos y exploramos es increíblemente buena. 8 Si el Señor se agrada de nosotros, nos hará entrar en ella. ¡Nos va a dar una tierra donde abundan la leche y la miel! 9 Así que no se rebelen contra el Señor ni tengan miedo de la gente que habita en esa tierra. ¡Ya son pan comido! No tienen quién los proteja, porque el Señor está de parte nuestra. Así que, ¡no les tengan miedo!
10 Pero como toda la comunidad hablaba de apedrearlos, la gloria del Señor se manifestó en la Tienda de reunión, frente a todos los israelitas. 11 Entonces el Señor dijo a Moisés:
—¿Hasta cuándo esta gente me seguirá menospreciando? ¿Hasta cuándo se negarán a creer en mí, a pesar de todas las maravillas que he hecho entre ellos? 12 Voy a enviarles una plaga que los destruya, pero de ti haré un pueblo más grande y fuerte que ellos.
13 Moisés respondió al Señor:
—¡Recuerda que fuiste tú quien con tu poder sacaste de Egipto a este pueblo! Cuando los egipcios se enteren de lo ocurrido, 14 se lo contarán a los habitantes de este país, quienes ya saben que tú, Señor, estás en medio de este pueblo. También saben que tú, Señor, te dejas ver cara a cara, que tu nube reposa sobre tu pueblo y que eres tú quien lo guía, de día con la columna de nube y de noche con la columna de fuego. 15 De manera que, si matas a todo este pueblo, las naciones que han oído hablar de tu fama dirán: 16 El Señor no fue capaz de llevar a este pueblo a la tierra que juró darles, ¡y acabó matándolos en el desierto!
17 »Ahora, Señor, ¡deja sentir tu gran poder! Tú mismo has dicho: 18 “El Señor es lento para la ira y grande en amor, perdona la maldad y la rebeldía, pero no tendrá por inocente al culpable, sino que castiga la maldad de los padres en sus hijos hasta la tercera y cuarta generación”. 19 Entonces, por tu gran amor, perdona el pecado de este pueblo, tal como lo has venido perdonando desde que salió de Egipto».
20 El Señor respondió:
—Me pides que los perdone y los perdono. 21 Pero tan cierto como que yo, el Señor, vivo y mi gloria llena toda la tierra, 22 ninguno de los que vieron mi gloria y las maravillas que hice en Egipto y en el desierto y aún así me desobedecieron y me pusieron a prueba diez veces, 23 verá jamás la tierra que, bajo juramento, prometí dar a sus antepasados. ¡Ninguno de los que me despreciaron la verá! 24 En cambio, a mi siervo Caleb, que ha mostrado un espíritu diferente y me ha sido fiel, le daré posesión de la tierra que exploró y su descendencia la heredará. 25 Pero regresen mañana al desierto por la ruta del mar Rojo,[a] puesto que los amalecitas y los cananeos viven en el valle.
26 El Señor dijo a Moisés y a Aarón:
27 —¿Hasta cuándo ha de murmurar contra mí esta perversa comunidad? Ya he escuchado cómo se quejan contra mí los israelitas. 28 Así que diles de mi parte: “Tan cierto como que yo vivo”, afirma el Señor, “haré que se cumplan sus deseos. 29 Los cadáveres de todos ustedes quedarán tirados en este desierto. Ninguno de los censados mayores de veinte años que murmuraron contra mí 30 tomará posesión de la tierra que juré solemnemente que sería su hogar. Solo entrarán en ella Caleb, hijo de Jefone, y Josué, hijo de Nun. 31 También entrarán en la tierra los niños que ustedes dijeron que serían botín de guerra. Y serán ellos los que gocen de la tierra que ustedes rechazaron. 32 Pero los cadáveres de todos ustedes quedarán tirados en este desierto. 33 Durante cuarenta años los hijos de ustedes serán pastores por el desierto. Cargarán con esta infidelidad, hasta que el último de ustedes caiga muerto en el desierto. 34 La exploración del país duró cuarenta días, así que ustedes sufrirán un año por cada día. Cuarenta años llevarán a cuestas su maldad y sabrán lo que es tenerme por enemigo”. 35 Yo soy el Señor y cumpliré al pie de la letra todo lo que anuncié contra esta perversa comunidad que se atrevió a desafiarme. En este desierto perecerán. ¡Morirán aquí mismo!
36 Los hombres que Moisés había enviado a explorar el país fueron los que, al volver, difundieron la información falsa de que la tierra era mala. Con esto hicieron que toda la comunidad murmurara. 37 Por eso los responsables de haber difundido esta información falsa acerca de aquella tierra murieron delante del Señor, víctimas de una plaga. 38 De todos los hombres que fueron a explorar el país solo sobrevivieron Josué, hijo de Nun, y Caleb, hijo de Jefone.
El pueblo intenta conquistar la tierra
39 Cuando Moisés terminó de decirles esto, todos los israelitas se pusieron a llorar amargamente. 40 Al otro día, muy de mañana, el pueblo empezó a subir a la parte alta de la zona montañosa y decía:
—Subamos al lugar que el Señor nos ha prometido, pues reconocemos que hemos pecado.
41 Pero Moisés dijo:
—¿Por qué han vuelto a desobedecer la orden del Señor? ¡Esto no les va a dar resultado! 42 No suban, porque los derrotarán sus enemigos, pues el Señor no está entre ustedes. 43 Tendrán que enfrentarse a los amalecitas y a los cananeos, que los matarán a filo de espada. Como ustedes se han alejado del Señor, él no estará con ustedes.
44 Pero ellos se empecinaron en subir a la cumbre de la montaña, a pesar de que ni Moisés ni el arca del pacto del Señor salieron del campamento. 45 Entonces los amalecitas y los cananeos que vivían en esas montañas descendieron y los derrotaron, haciéndolos retroceder hasta Jormá.

Los israelitas se rebelan contra el Señor(A)
14 Entonces los israelitas comenzaron a gritar, y aquella noche se la pasaron llorando. 2 Todos ellos se pusieron a hablar mal de Moisés y de Aarón. Decían: «¡Ojalá hubiéramos muerto en Egipto, o aquí en el desierto! 3 ¿Para qué nos trajo el Señor a este país? ¿Para morir en la guerra, y que nuestras mujeres y nuestros hijos caigan en poder del enemigo? ¡Más nos valdría regresar a Egipto!» 4 Y empezaron a decirse unos a otros: «¡Pongamos a uno de jefe y volvamos a Egipto!»
5 Moisés y Aarón se inclinaron hasta tocar el suelo con la frente delante de todo el pueblo, 6 y Josué y Caleb, que habían estado explorando el país, se rasgaron la ropa en señal de dolor 7 y dijeron a todos los israelitas:
—¡La tierra que fuimos a explorar es excelente! 8 Si el Señor nos favorece, nos ayudará a entrar a esa tierra y nos la dará. Es un país donde la leche y la miel corren como el agua. 9 Pero no se rebelen contra el Señor, ni le tengan miedo a la gente de ese país, porque ellos van a ser pan comido para nosotros; a ellos no hay quien los proteja, mientras que nosotros tenemos de nuestra parte al Señor. ¡No tengan miedo!
10 A pesar de esto, la gente quería apedrearlos. Entonces la gloria del Señor se apareció en la tienda del encuentro, a la vista de todos los israelitas, 11 y el Señor dijo a Moisés:
—¿Hasta cuándo va a seguir menospreciándome este pueblo? ¿Hasta cuándo van a seguir dudando de mí, a pesar de los milagros que he hecho entre ellos? 12 Les voy a enviar una epidemia mortal que les impida tomar posesión de esa tierra; pero de ti haré un pueblo más grande y más fuerte que ellos.
13 Pero Moisés respondió al Señor:
—Tú, con tu poder, sacaste de Egipto a este pueblo. Cuando los egipcios sepan lo que vas a hacer, 14 se lo contarán a los habitantes del país de Canaán. Ellos también han oído decir que tú, Señor, estás en medio de este pueblo, que te dejas ver cara a cara y tu nube está sobre ellos, y que de día vas delante de ellos en una columna de nube y de noche en una columna de fuego. 15 Si matas a este pueblo de un solo golpe, las naciones que saben de tu fama van a decir: 16 “El Señor no pudo hacer que este pueblo entrara en la tierra que había jurado darles, y por eso los mató en el desierto.” 17 Por eso, Señor, muestra ahora tu gran poder, tal como lo has prometido. Tú has dicho 18 que no te enojas fácilmente, que es muy grande tu amor y que perdonas la maldad y la rebeldía, aunque no dejas sin castigo al culpable, sino que castigas la maldad de los padres en los hijos, los nietos, los bisnietos y los tataranietos. 19 Puesto que tu amor es tan grande, perdónale a este pueblo su maldad, ya que has tenido paciencia con ellos desde Egipto hasta este lugar.
El Señor castiga a los israelitas(B)
20 El Señor respondió:
—Bien, yo los perdono, tal como me lo pides. 21 Pero, eso sí, tan cierto como que yo vivo y que mi gloria llena toda la tierra, 22 ninguno de los que han visto mi gloria y los milagros que hice en Egipto y en el desierto, y que me han puesto a prueba una y otra vez en el desierto y no han querido obedecer mis órdenes, 23 ninguno de ellos verá la tierra que prometí a sus antepasados. Ninguno de los que me han menospreciado la verá. 24 Solamente mi siervo Caleb ha tenido un espíritu diferente y me ha obedecido fielmente. Por eso a él sí lo dejaré entrar en el país que fue a explorar, y sus descendientes se establecerán allí. 25 (Los amalecitas y los cananeos viven en la llanura.) En cuanto a ustedes, den la vuelta mañana y sigan por el desierto en dirección al Mar Rojo.
26 El Señor se dirigió a Moisés y Aarón, y les dijo:
27 —¿Hasta cuándo voy a tener que soportar las habladurías de estos malvados israelitas? Ya les he oído hablar mal de mí. 28 Pues ve a decirles de mi parte: “Yo, el Señor, juro por mi vida que voy a hacer que les suceda a ustedes lo mismo que les he oído decir. 29 Todos los mayores de veinte años que fueron registrados en el censo y que han hablado mal de mí, morirán, y sus cadáveres quedarán tirados en este desierto. 30 Con la excepción de Caleb y de Josué, ninguno de ustedes entrará en la tierra donde solemnemente les prometí que los iba a establecer. 31 En cambio, a sus hijos, de quienes ustedes decían que iban a caer en poder de sus enemigos, los llevaré al país que ustedes han despreciado, para que ellos lo disfruten. 32 Los cadáveres de ustedes quedarán tirados en este desierto, 33 en el que sus hijos vivirán como pastores durante cuarenta años. De este modo ellos pagarán por la infidelidad de ustedes, hasta que todos ustedes mueran aquí en el desierto. 34 Ustedes estuvieron cuarenta días explorando el país; pues también estarán cuarenta años pagando su castigo: un año por cada día. Así sabrán lo que es ponerse en contra de mí.” 35 Yo, el Señor, lo afirmo: Así voy a tratar a este pueblo perverso que se ha unido contra mí. En este desierto encontrarán su fin; aquí morirán.
Muerte de los diez espías malvados
36-37 En cuanto a los hombres que Moisés había enviado a explorar el país y que al volver dieron tan malos informes, haciendo que la gente murmurara, el Señor los hizo caer muertos. 38 De todos ellos, sólo Josué y Caleb quedaron con vida.
Los israelitas son derrotados en Hormá(C)
39 Cuando Moisés contó a los israelitas lo que el Señor había dicho, todos ellos se pusieron muy tristes. 40 A la mañana siguiente se levantaron temprano, subieron a la parte alta de la región montañosa y dijeron:
—¡Ya estamos aquí! Vayamos al lugar que el Señor nos ha prometido, pues en verdad hemos pecado.
41 Pero Moisés les dijo:
—¿Por qué desobedecen las órdenes del Señor? ¡Ese intento va a fracasar! 42 No sigan adelante, porque el Señor no está con ustedes. Sus enemigos los van a derrotar. 43 Allá delante los esperan los amalecitas y los cananeos, para pelear con ustedes y matarlos. Y puesto que ustedes han abandonado al Señor, él ya no está con ustedes.
44 Ellos, sin embargo, se empeñaron en subir a la parte alta de la región montañosa; pero ni el arca de la alianza del Señor ni Moisés se movieron del campamento. 45 Entonces salieron los amalecitas y los cananeos que vivían en la región, y persiguieron a los israelitas hasta Hormá, derrotándolos completamente.

14 At this all the people of Isra’el cried out in dismay and wept all night long. 2 Moreover, all the people of Isra’el began grumbling against Moshe and Aharon; the whole community told them, “We wish we had died in the land of Egypt! or that we had died here in the desert! 3 Why is Adonai bringing us to this land, where we will die by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will be taken as booty! Wouldn’t it be better for us to return to Egypt?” 4 And they said to each other, “Let’s appoint a leader and return to Egypt!”
5 Moshe and Aharon fell on their faces before the entire assembled community of the people of Isra’el. 6 Y’hoshua the son of Nun and Kalev the son of Y’funeh, from the detachment that had reconnoitered the land, tore their clothes 7 and said to the whole community of Isra’el, “The land we passed through in order to spy it out is an outstandingly good land! (iii) 8 If Adonai is pleased with us, then he will bring us into this land and give it to us — a land flowing with milk and honey. 9 Just don’t rebel against Adonai. And don’t be afraid of the people living in the land — we’ll eat them up! Their defense has been taken away from them, and Adonai is with us! Don’t be afraid of them!”
10 But just as the whole community were saying they should be stoned to death, the glory of Adonai appeared in the tent of meeting to all the people of Isra’el. 11 Adonai said to Moshe, “How much longer is this people going to treat me with contempt? How much longer will they not trust me, especially considering all the signs I have performed among them? 12 I am going to strike them with sickness, destroy them and make from you a nation greater and stronger than they are!”
13 However, Moshe replied to Adonai, “When the Egyptians hear about this — [and they will,] because it was from among them that you, by your strength, brought this people up — 14 they will tell the people living in this land. They have heard that you, Adonai, are with this people; that you, Adonai, are seen face to face; that your cloud stands over them; that you go ahead of them in a column of cloud by day and a column of fire by night. 15 If you kill off this people at a single stroke, then the nations that have heard of your reputation will say 16 that the reason Adonai slaughtered this people in the desert is that he wasn’t able to bring them into the land which he swore to give them. 17 So now, please, let Adonai’s power be as great as when you said, 18 ‘Adonai is slow to anger, rich in grace, forgiving offenses and crimes; yet not exonerating the guilty, but causing the negative effects of the parents’ offenses to be experienced by their children and even by the third and fourth generations.’ 19 Please! Forgive the offense of this people according to the greatness of your grace, just as you have borne with this people from Egypt until now.”
20 Adonai answered, “I have forgiven, as you have asked. 21 But as sure as I live, and that the whole earth is filled with the glory of Adonai, 22 none of the people who saw my glory and the signs I did in Egypt and in the desert, yet tested me these ten times and did not listen to my voice, 23 will see the land I swore to their ancestors! None of those who treated me with contempt will see it. 24 But my servant Kalev, because he had a different Spirit with him and has fully followed me — him I will bring into the land he entered, and it will belong to his descendants.
25 “Now, since the ‘Amaleki and the Kena‘ani are living in the valley, tomorrow turn around and get yourselves into the desert along the way to the Sea of Suf.”
(iv) 26 Adonai said to Moshe and Aharon, 27 “How long am I to put up with this evil community who keep grumbling about me? I have heard the complaints of the people of Isra’el, which they continue to raise against me. 28 Tell them this: ‘As surely as I live, Adonai swears, as surely as you have spoken in my ears, I will do this to you: 29 your carcasses will fall in this desert! Every single one of you who were included in the census over the age of twenty, you who have complained against me, 30 will certainly not enter the land about which I raised my hand to swear that I would have you live in it — except for Kalev the son of Y’funeh and Y’hoshua the son of Nun. 31 But your little ones, who you said would be taken as booty — them I will bring in. They will know the land you have rejected. 32 But you, your carcasses will fall in this desert; 33 and your children will wander about in the desert for forty years bearing the consequences of your prostitutions until the desert eats up your carcasses. 34 It will be a year for every day you spent reconnoitering the land that you will bear the consequences of your offenses — forty days, forty years. Then you will know what it means to oppose me! 35 I, Adonai, have spoken.’ I will certainly do this to this whole evil community who have assembled together against me — they will be destroyed in this desert and die there.”
36 The men whom Moshe had sent to reconnoiter the land and who, when they returned, made the entire community complain against him by giving an unfavorable report about the land — 37 those men who gave the unfavorable report about the land died by the plague in the presence of Adonai. 38 Of the men who went to reconnoiter the land, only Y’hoshua the son of Nun and Kalev the son of Y’funeh remained alive.
39 When Moshe told these things to all the people of Isra’el, the people felt great remorse. 40 They arose early the next morning, came up to the top of the mountain and said, “Here we are, and we did sin, but now we’ll go up to the place Adonai promised.” 41 Moshe answered, “Why are you opposing what Adonai said? You won’t succeed! 42 Don’t go up there, because Adonai isn’t with you. If you do, your enemies will defeat you. 43 The ‘Amalekim and the Kena‘anim are there ahead of you, and you will be struck down by the sword. The reason will be that you have turned away from following Adonai, so that Adonai won’t be with you.”
44 But they were presumptuous and went on up toward the high parts of the hill-country, even though the ark for the covenant of Adonai — and Moshe — stayed in the camp. 45 So the ‘Amalekim and the Kena‘anim living in that hill-country descended, struck them down and beat them back all the way to Hormah.

The People Rebel
14 That night all the members of the community raised their voices and wept aloud.(A) 2 All the Israelites grumbled(B) against Moses and Aaron, and the whole assembly said to them, “If only we had died in Egypt!(C) Or in this wilderness!(D) 3 Why is the Lord bringing us to this land only to let us fall by the sword?(E) Our wives and children(F) will be taken as plunder.(G) Wouldn’t it be better for us to go back to Egypt?(H)” 4 And they said to each other, “We should choose a leader and go back to Egypt.(I)”
5 Then Moses and Aaron fell facedown(J) in front of the whole Israelite assembly(K) gathered there. 6 Joshua son of Nun(L) and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had explored the land, tore their clothes(M) 7 and said to the entire Israelite assembly, “The land we passed through and explored is exceedingly good.(N) 8 If the Lord is pleased with us,(O) he will lead us into that land, a land flowing with milk and honey,(P) and will give it to us.(Q) 9 Only do not rebel(R) against the Lord. And do not be afraid(S) of the people of the land,(T) because we will devour them. Their protection is gone, but the Lord is with(U) us.(V) Do not be afraid of them.”(W)
10 But the whole assembly talked about stoning(X) them. Then the glory of the Lord(Y) appeared at the tent of meeting to all the Israelites. 11 The Lord said to Moses, “How long will these people treat me with contempt?(Z) How long will they refuse to believe in me,(AA) in spite of all the signs(AB) I have performed among them? 12 I will strike them down with a plague(AC) and destroy them, but I will make you into a nation(AD) greater and stronger than they.”(AE)
13 Moses said to the Lord, “Then the Egyptians will hear about it! By your power you brought these people up from among them.(AF) 14 And they will tell the inhabitants of this land about it. They have already heard(AG) that you, Lord, are with these people(AH) and that you, Lord, have been seen face to face,(AI) that your cloud stays over them,(AJ) and that you go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night.(AK) 15 If you put all these people to death, leaving none alive, the nations who have heard this report about you will say, 16 ‘The Lord was not able to bring these people into the land he promised them on oath,(AL) so he slaughtered them in the wilderness.’(AM)
17 “Now may the Lord’s strength be displayed, just as you have declared: 18 ‘The Lord is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion.(AN) Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.’(AO) 19 In accordance with your great love, forgive(AP) the sin of these people,(AQ) just as you have pardoned them from the time they left Egypt until now.”(AR)
20 The Lord replied, “I have forgiven them,(AS) as you asked. 21 Nevertheless, as surely as I live(AT) and as surely as the glory of the Lord(AU) fills the whole earth,(AV) 22 not one of those who saw my glory and the signs(AW) I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness but who disobeyed me and tested me ten times(AX)— 23 not one of them will ever see the land I promised on oath(AY) to their ancestors. No one who has treated me with contempt(AZ) will ever see it.(BA) 24 But because my servant Caleb(BB) has a different spirit and follows me wholeheartedly,(BC) I will bring him into the land he went to, and his descendants will inherit it.(BD) 25 Since the Amalekites(BE) and the Canaanites(BF) are living in the valleys, turn(BG) back tomorrow and set out toward the desert along the route to the Red Sea.[a](BH)”
26 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron: 27 “How long will this wicked community grumble against me? I have heard the complaints of these grumbling Israelites.(BI) 28 So tell them, ‘As surely as I live,(BJ) declares the Lord, I will do to you(BK) the very thing I heard you say: 29 In this wilderness your bodies will fall(BL)—every one of you twenty years old or more(BM) who was counted in the census(BN) and who has grumbled against me. 30 Not one of you will enter the land(BO) I swore with uplifted hand(BP) to make your home, except Caleb son of Jephunneh(BQ) and Joshua son of Nun.(BR) 31 As for your children that you said would be taken as plunder, I will bring them in to enjoy the land you have rejected.(BS) 32 But as for you, your bodies will fall(BT) in this wilderness. 33 Your children will be shepherds here for forty years,(BU) suffering for your unfaithfulness, until the last of your bodies lies in the wilderness. 34 For forty years(BV)—one year for each of the forty days you explored the land(BW)—you will suffer for your sins and know what it is like to have me against you.’ 35 I, the Lord, have spoken, and I will surely do these things(BX) to this whole wicked community, which has banded together against me. They will meet their end in this wilderness; here they will die.(BY)”
36 So the men Moses had sent(BZ) to explore the land, who returned and made the whole community grumble(CA) against him by spreading a bad report(CB) about it— 37 these men who were responsible for spreading the bad report(CC) about the land were struck down and died of a plague(CD) before the Lord. 38 Of the men who went to explore the land,(CE) only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh survived.(CF)
39 When Moses reported this(CG) to all the Israelites, they mourned(CH) bitterly. 40 Early the next morning they set out for the highest point in the hill country,(CI) saying, “Now we are ready to go up to the land the Lord promised. Surely we have sinned!(CJ)”
41 But Moses said, “Why are you disobeying the Lord’s command? This will not succeed!(CK) 42 Do not go up, because the Lord is not with you. You will be defeated by your enemies,(CL) 43 for the Amalekites(CM) and the Canaanites(CN) will face you there. Because you have turned away from the Lord, he will not be with you(CO) and you will fall by the sword.”
44 Nevertheless, in their presumption they went up(CP) toward the highest point in the hill country, though neither Moses nor the ark of the Lord’s covenant moved from the camp.(CQ) 45 Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites(CR) who lived in that hill country(CS) came down and attacked them and beat them down all the way to Hormah.(CT)

2 And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron: and the whole congregation said unto them, Would God that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would God we had died in this wilderness!
3 And wherefore hath the Lord brought us unto this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be a prey? were it not better for us to return into Egypt?
4 And they said one to another, Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.
5 Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.
6 And Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of them that searched the land, rent their clothes:
7 And they spake unto all the company of the children of Israel, saying, The land, which we passed through to search it, is an exceeding good land.
8 If the Lord delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which floweth with milk and honey.
9 Only rebel not ye against the Lord, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and the Lord is with us: fear them not.
10 But all the congregation bade stone them with stones. And the glory of the Lord appeared in the tabernacle of the congregation before all the children of Israel.
11 And the Lord said unto Moses, How long will this people provoke me? and how long will it be ere they believe me, for all the signs which I have shewed among them?
12 I will smite them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of thee a greater nation and mightier than they.
13 And Moses said unto the Lord, Then the Egyptians shall hear it, (for thou broughtest up this people in thy might from among them;)
14 And they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land: for they have heard that thou Lord art among this people, that thou Lord art seen face to face, and that thy cloud standeth over them, and that thou goest before them, by day time in a pillar of a cloud, and in a pillar of fire by night.
15 Now if thou shalt kill all this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of thee will speak, saying,
16 Because the Lord was not able to bring this people into the land which he sware unto them, therefore he hath slain them in the wilderness.
17 And now, I beseech thee, let the power of my lord be great, according as thou hast spoken, saying,
18 The Lord is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation.
19 Pardon, I beseech thee, the iniquity of this people according unto the greatness of thy mercy, and as thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.
20 And the Lord said, I have pardoned according to thy word:
21 But as truly as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord.
22 Because all those men which have seen my glory, and my miracles, which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tempted me now these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice;
23 Surely they shall not see the land which I sware unto their fathers, neither shall any of them that provoked me see it:
24 But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it.
25 (Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwelt in the valley.) Tomorrow turn you, and get you into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea.
26 And the Lord spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,
27 How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, which murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me.
28 Say unto them, As truly as I live, saith the Lord, as ye have spoken in mine ears, so will I do to you:
29 Your carcases shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward which have murmured against me.
30 Doubtless ye shall not come into the land, concerning which I sware to make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.
31 But your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have despised.
32 But as for you, your carcases, they shall fall in this wilderness.
33 And your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years, and bear your whoredoms, until your carcases be wasted in the wilderness.
34 After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know my breach of promise.
35 I the Lord have said, I will surely do it unto all this evil congregation, that are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.
36 And the men, which Moses sent to search the land, who returned, and made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up a slander upon the land,
37 Even those men that did bring up the evil report upon the land, died by the plague before the Lord.
38 But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of the men that went to search the land, lived still.
39 And Moses told these sayings unto all the children of Israel: and the people mourned greatly.
40 And they rose up early in the morning, and gat them up into the top of the mountain, saying, Lo, we be here, and will go up unto the place which the Lord hath promised: for we have sinned.
41 And Moses said, Wherefore now do ye transgress the commandment of the Lord? but it shall not prosper.
42 Go not up, for the Lord is not among you; that ye be not smitten before your enemies.
43 For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and ye shall fall by the sword: because ye are turned away from the Lord, therefore the Lord will not be with you.
44 But they presumed to go up unto the hill top: nevertheless the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and Moses, departed not out of the camp.
45 Then the Amalekites came down, and the Canaanites which dwelt in that hill, and smote them, and discomfited them, even unto Hormah.
