⁶ and ^(A)Jesse the father of David the king.

And ^(B)David was the father of Solomon by ^(C)the wife of Uriah, ⁷ and ^(D)Solomon the father of Rehoboam, and Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asaph,^{[a] 8} and Asaph the father of Jehoshaphat, and Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, ^(E)and Joram the father of Uzziah, ⁹ and Uzziah the father of Jotham, and Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, ¹⁰ and Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, and Manasseh the father of Amos,^[b] and Amos the father of Josiah, ¹¹ and ^(F)Josiah the father of ^(G)Jechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon.

¹² And after the deportation to Babylon: ^(H)Jechoniah was the father of ^(I)Shealtiel,^[c] and ^(J)Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, ¹³ and Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, and Abiud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor, ¹⁴ and Azor the father of Zadok, and Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud, ¹⁵ and Eliud the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob, ¹⁶ and Jacob the father of ^(K)Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ.

^5 (A)“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous ^(B)Branch, and ^(C)he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. ⁶ In his days Judah will be saved, and ^(D)Israel will ^(E)dwell securely. And this is the name by which he will be called: ^(F)‘The Lord is our righteousness.’

²³ therefore the Lord God sent him out from the garden of Eden ^(A)to work the ground from which he was taken. ²⁴ He drove out the man, and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the ^(B)cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life.

Cain and Abel

4 Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, “I have gotten^[a] a man with the help of the Lord.” ² And again, she bore his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain a worker of the ground. ³ In the course of time Cain brought to the Lord an offering of ^(C)the fruit of the ground, ⁴ and Abel also brought of ^(D)the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. And the Lord ^(E)had regard for Abel and his offering, ⁵ but ^(F)for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his face fell. ⁶ The Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? ^7 (G)If you do well, will you not be accepted?^[b] And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. ^(H)Its desire is for^[c] you, and you must rule over it.”
