³³ “Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit.^{(A) 34} You brood of vipers,^(B) how can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks^(C) what the heart is full of. ³⁵ A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him.

⁴³ Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. ⁴⁴ You belong to your father, the devil,^(A) and you want to carry out your father’s desires.^(B) He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.^{(C) 45} Yet because I tell the truth,^(D) you do not believe me! ⁴⁶ Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me? ⁴⁷ Whoever belongs to God hears what God says.^(E) The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”

²⁵ Jesus answered, “I did tell you,^(A) but you do not believe. The works I do in my Father’s name testify about me,^{(B) 26} but you do not believe because you are not my sheep.^{(C) 27} My sheep listen to my voice; I know them,^(D) and they follow me.^{(E) 28} I give them eternal life,^(F) and they shall never perish;^(G) no one will snatch them out of my hand.^{(H) 29} My Father, who has given them to me,^(I) is greater than all^[a];^(J) no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand.

¹⁶ You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you^(A) so that you might go and bear fruit^(B)—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.^{(C) 17} This is my command: Love each other.^(D)

The World Hates the Disciples

¹⁸ “If the world hates you,^(E) keep in mind that it hated me first. ¹⁹ If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you^(F) out of the world. That is why the world hates you.^(G)

¹⁸ When they heard this, they had no further objections and praised God, saying, “So then, even to Gentiles God has granted repentance that leads to life.”^(A)
