¹⁶Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.

¹⁶“I am sending you out like sheep among wolves.^(A) Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.^(B)

¹⁷But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues;

¹⁷Be on your guard; you will be handed over to the local councils^(A) and be flogged in the synagogues.^(B)
