4 Men det skal skje i de siste dager, da skal fjellet der Herrens hus står, være grunnfestet på toppen av fjellene, og høit hevet skal det være over alle høider; og folkeslag skal strømme op på det.

2 Og mange hedningefolk skal gå avsted og si: Kom, la oss gå op til Herrens berg og til Jakobs Guds hus, så han kan lære oss sine veier, og vi ferdes på hans stier! For fra Sion skal lov utgå, og Herrens ord fra Jerusalem.

3 Og han skal dømme mellem mange folkeslag og skifte rett for veldige hedningefolk helt til de fjerneste land, og de skal smi sine sverd om til hakker og sine spyd til vingårdskniver; folkene skal ikke lenger løfte sverd mot hverandre og ikke mere lære å føre krig,

4 men de skal sitte hver under sitt vintre og sitt fikentre, og ingen skal skremme dem; for Herrens, hærskarenes Guds munn har talt.

5 For alle folkene vandrer hvert i sin guds navn; men vi vandrer i Herrens, vår Guds navn evindelig og alltid.

6 På den dag, sier Herren, vil jeg samle de haltende og sanke sammen de bortdrevne og dem jeg har faret ille med,

7 og jeg vil la de haltende bli i live som en rest og gjøre de langt bortdrevne til et tallrikt folk. Og Herren skal være konge over dem på Sions berg fra nu og til evig tid.

8 Og du hjordens tårn[a], du Sions datters haug! Til dig skal det nå, ja, det skal komme det forrige herredømme, kongedømmet over Jerusalems datter.

9 Hvorfor skriker du nu så høit? Er det da ingen konge i dig, eller er din rådgiver omkommet, siden veer har grepet dig som den fødende kvinnes?

10 Vri dig og jamre dig, Sions datter, som en fødende kvinne! For nu må du dra ut av byen og bo ute på marken, og du skal komme like til Babel. Der skal du bli utfridd, der skal Herren løse dig ut av dine fienders hånd.

11 Nu har mange folkeslag samlet sig mot dig, og de sier: Måtte det bli vanhelliget, så våre øine kan se med lyst på Sion!

12 Men de kjenner ikke Herrens tanker og forstår ikke hans råd, at han har samlet dem som kornbånd til treskeplassen.

13 Stå op og tresk, du Sions datter! For ditt horn vil jeg gjøre til jern, og dine klover vil jeg gjøre til kobber, og du skal knuse mange folk, og jeg vil lyse deres rov i bann til Herren og deres gods til all jordens herre.

14 Nu samler du dig i skare, du skarenes datter[b]! Voller har de kastet op imot oss; med staven slår de Israels dommer på kinnbenet.

4 En los últimos días,
    el monte del Templo del Señor
será establecido como el más alto de los montes;
    se alzará por encima de las colinas
y hacia él correrán todas las naciones.

2 Muchos pueblos vendrán y dirán:

«¡Vengan, subamos al monte del Señor,
    al Templo del Dios de Jacob!
Dios mismo nos instruirá en sus caminos
    y así andaremos por sus sendas».
Porque de Sión saldrá la Ley,
    de Jerusalén, la palabra del Señor.
3 Dios mismo juzgará entre muchos pueblos
    y administrará justicia
    a naciones poderosas y lejanas.
Convertirán sus espadas en arados
    y en hoces sus lanzas.
Ya no levantará su espada nación contra nación
    y nunca más se adiestrarán para la guerra.
4 Cada uno se sentará
    debajo de su vid y de su higuera;
y nadie perturbará su solaz
    —el Señor de los Ejércitos lo ha dicho—.

10 Retuércete y puja, hija de Sión,
    como mujer a punto de dar a luz,
porque ahora vas a salir de tu ciudad
    y tendrás que vivir a campo abierto.
Irás a Babilonia,
    pero de allí serás rescatada;
el Señor te librará
    del poder de tus enemigos.

11 Ahora muchas naciones se han reunido contra ti.
    Y dicen: «¡Que sea profanada Sión!
    ¡Disfrutemos del espectáculo!».
12 Pero ellas no saben lo que piensa el Señor
    ni comprenden sus designios;
no saben que él las junta
    como a gavillas en la era.
13 ¡Levántate, hija de Sión!
    ¡Ponte a trillar!
Yo haré de hierro tus cuernos
    y de bronce tus pezuñas,
para que conviertas en polvo a muchos pueblos,

Better Days Ahead for Jerusalem

4 And in future days[a] the Lord’s Temple Mount will be the most important mountain of all;[b]
it will be more prominent than other hills.[c]
People will stream to it.
2 Many nations will come, saying,
“Come on! Let’s go up to the Lord’s mountain,
to the temple of Jacob’s God,
so he can teach us his ways
and we can live by his laws.”[d]
For instruction will proceed from Zion,
the Lord’s message from Jerusalem.
3 He will arbitrate[e] between many peoples
and settle disputes between many[f] distant nations.[g]
They will beat their swords into plowshares,[h]
and their spears into pruning hooks.[i]
Nations will not use weapons[j] against other nations,
and they will no longer train for war.
4 Each will sit under his own grapevine
or under his own fig tree without any fear.[k]
The Lord of Heaven’s Armies has decreed it.[l]
5 Though all the nations follow their respective gods,[m]
we will follow[n] the Lord our God forever.

Restoration Will Follow Crisis

6 “In that day,” says the Lord, “I will gather the lame
and assemble the outcasts whom I injured.[o]
7 I will transform the lame into the nucleus of a new nation,[p]
and those far off[q] into a mighty nation.
The Lord will reign over them on Mount Zion,
from that day forward and forevermore.[r]
8 As for you, watchtower for the flock,[s]
fortress of Daughter Zion[t]—
your former dominion will be restored,[u]
the sovereignty that belongs to Daughter Jerusalem.”
9 Jerusalem, why are you[v] now shouting so loudly?[w]
Has your king disappeared?[x]
Has your wise leader[y] been destroyed?
Is this why[z] pain grips[aa] you as if you were a woman in labor?
10 Twist and strain,[ab] Daughter Zion, as if you were in labor!
For you will leave the city
and live in the open field.
You will go to Babylon,
but there you will be rescued.
There the Lord will deliver[ac] you
from the power[ad] of your enemies.
11 Many nations have now assembled against you.
They say, “Jerusalem must be desecrated,[ae]
so we can gloat over Zion!”[af]
12 But they do not know what the Lord is planning;
they do not understand his strategy.
He has gathered them like stalks of grain to be threshed[ag] at the threshing floor.
13 “Get up and thresh, Daughter Zion!
For I will give you iron horns;[ah]
I will give you bronze hooves,
and you will crush many nations.”[ai]
You will devote to the Lord the spoils you take from them
and dedicate their wealth to the sovereign Ruler[aj] of the whole earth.[ak]

The present translation assumes the form is a Niphal participle of an otherwise unattested denominative verb הָלָא (halaʾ, “to be far off”; see BDB 229 s.v.), but attractive emendations include הַנַּחֲלָה (hannakhalah, “the sick one[s]”) from חָלָה (khalah) and הַנִּלְאָה (hannilʾah, “the weary one[s]”) from לָאָה (laʾah).

  19. Micah 4:8 tn Heb “Migdal Eder.” Some English versions transliterate this phrase, apparently because they view it as a place name (cf. NAB).
  20. Micah 4:8 sn The city of David, located within Jerusalem, is addressed as Daughter Zion. As the home of the Davidic king, who was Israel’s shepherd (Ps 78:70-72), the royal citadel could be viewed metaphorically as the watchtower of the flock.

  22. Micah 4:9 tn The Hebrew form is feminine singular, indicating that Jerusalem, personified as a young woman, is now addressed (see v. 10). In v. 8 the tower/fortress was addressed with masculine forms, so there is clearly a shift in addressee here. “Jerusalem” has been supplied in the translation at the beginning of v. 9 to make this shift apparent.

  35. Micah 4:13 sn Jerusalem (Daughter Zion at the beginning of the verse; cf. 4:8) is here compared to a powerful ox which crushes the grain on the threshing floor with its hooves.

Micah 4:13 tn Heb “and their wealth to the master of all the earth.” The verb “devote” does double duty in the parallelism and is supplied in the second line for clarification.sn In vv. 11-13 the prophet jumps from the present crisis (which will result in exile, v. 10) to a time beyond the restoration of the exiles when God will protect his city from invaders. The Lord’s victory over the Assyrian armies in 701 b.c. foreshadowed this.
