3 Io dissi: «Deh, ascoltate o capi di Giacobbe, e voi governanti della casa d'Israele: Non spetta forse a voi conoscere l'equità?
2 Voi che odiate il bene e amate il male, che strappate loro la pelle di dosso e la carne dalle loro ossa.
3 Essi divorano la carne del mio popolo, gli strappano la pelle di dosso, gli rompono le ossa e lo tagliano a pezzi come se dovesse andare in pentola, come carne da mettere nella caldaia.
4 Allora grideranno all'Eterno, ma egli non risponderà loro; in quel tempo egli nasconderà loro la sua faccia, perché sono stati malvagi nelle loro azioni.
5 Cosí dice l'Eterno riguardo ai profeti che fanno sviare il mio popolo, che gridano: "Pace" se hanno qualcosa da mordere fra i denti, ma dichiarano la guerra a chi non mette loro niente in bocca.
6 Perciò avrete notte senza visione, e avrete tenebre senza divinazione, il sole tramonterà su questi profeti e il giorno si oscurerà su di loro.
7 I veggenti saranno ricoperti di vergogna e gli indovini arrossiranno; si copriranno tutti quanti la barba, perché non ci sarà alcuna risposta da DIO».
8 Io invece sono ripieno di forza dello Spirito dell'Eterno, di giustizia e potenza, per far conoscere a Giacobbe la sua trasgressione e a Israele il suo peccato.
9 Deh, ascoltate questo, o capi della casa di Giacobbe e governanti della casa d'Israele, che abborrite la giustizia e pervertite tutto ciò che è retto,
10 che edificate Sion con il sangue e Gerusalemme, con l'iniquità.
11 I suoi capi giudicano per un dono, i suoi sacerdoti insegnano per un salario, i suoi profeti compiono divinazioni per denaro; tuttavia si appoggiano all'Eterno e dicono: «Non è forse l'Eterno in mezzo a noi? Non ci verrà addosso alcuna sventura».
12 Perciò, per causa vostra, Sion sarà arata come un campo, Gerusalemme diventerà un mucchio di rovine e il monte del tempio un'altura boscosa.

Rimprovero ai capi del popolo e ai falsi profeti
3 (A)Io dissi: «Ascoltate, vi prego, o capi di Giacobbe, e voi funzionari della casa d’Israele. Non spetta a voi conoscere ciò che è giusto?
2 Ma voi odiate il bene e amate il male, scorticate il mio popolo e gli strappate la carne dalle ossa.
3 Essi divorano la carne del mio popolo, gli strappano la pelle di dosso, gli spezzano le ossa; lo fanno a pezzi come ciò che si mette nella casseruola, come carne da mettere nella pentola».
4 Allora grideranno al Signore, ma egli non risponderà loro; in quei giorni egli nasconderà loro la sua faccia, perché le loro azioni sono state malvagie.
5 (B)Così parla il Signore riguardo ai profeti che sviano il mio popolo e che gridano: «Pace!» quando i loro denti hanno qualcosa da mangiare, ma dichiarano la guerra santa contro chi non mette nulla nella loro bocca.
6 «Perciò si farà notte per voi e non avrete più visioni; si farà buio e non avrete più divinazioni. Il sole tramonterà su questi profeti e il giorno si oscurerà per loro.
7 I veggenti saranno coperti di vergogna e gli indovini arrossiranno; tutti si copriranno la barba, perché non vi sarà risposta da Dio».
8 Ma, quanto a me, io sono pieno di forza, dello Spirito del Signore, di giustizia e di coraggio, per far conoscere a Giacobbe la sua trasgressione e a Israele il suo peccato.
9 (C)Ascoltate, vi prego, o capi della casa di Giacobbe, e voi guide della casa d’Israele, che detestate ciò che è giusto e pervertite tutto ciò che è retto,
10 che costruite Sion con il sangue e Gerusalemme con l’ingiustizia!
11 I suoi capi giudicano per ottenere regali, i suoi sacerdoti insegnano per un profitto, i suoi profeti fanno predizioni per denaro, e tuttavia si appoggiano al Signore e dicono: «Il Signore non è forse in mezzo a noi? Non ci verrà addosso nessun male!»
12 Perciò, per causa vostra, Sion sarà arata come un campo, Gerusalemme diventerà un mucchio di rovine, e il monte del tempio un’altura boscosa.

The Lord Warns Israel’s Leaders and Prophets
3 Then I said,
“Listen, you leaders of Jacob’s people!
Pay attention, you rulers of Israel!
You should want to judge others fairly.
2 But you hate what is good.
And you love what is evil.
You are like someone
who tears the skin off my people.
You pull the meat off their bones.
3 You eat my people’s bodies.
You strip off their skin.
You break their bones in pieces.
You chop them up like meat.
You put them in a cooking pot.”
4 The time will come when Israel
will cry out to the Lord.
But he won’t answer them.
In fact, he’ll turn his face away from them.
They have done what is evil.
5 The Lord says,
“The prophets are those
who lead my people astray.
If my people feed them,
the prophets promise them peace.
If my people do not feed them,
the prophets prepare to go to war against them.
6 So night will come on the prophets.
But they will not have any visions.
Darkness will cover them.
But they will not be able
to figure out what is going to happen.
The sun will set on the prophets.
The day will become dark for them.
7 Those who see visions will be put to shame.
Those who try to figure out what is going to happen
will be dishonored.
All of them will cover their faces.
I will not answer them.”
8 The Spirit of the Lord
has filled me with power.
He helps me do what is fair.
He makes me brave.
Now I’m prepared to tell Jacob’s people
what they’ve done wrong.
I’m ready to tell Israel they’ve sinned.
9 Listen to me, you leaders of Jacob’s people!
Pay attention, you rulers of Israel!
You hate to do what is fair.
You twist everything that is right.
10 You build up Zion by spilling the blood of others.
You build Jerusalem by doing what is evil.
11 Your judges take money from people
who want special favors.
Your priests teach only if they get paid for it.
Your prophets won’t tell fortunes
unless they receive money.
But you still look for the Lord’s help.
You say, “The Lord is with us.
No trouble will come on us.”
12 So because of what you have done,
Zion will be plowed up like a field.
Jerusalem will be turned into a pile of trash.
The temple hill will be covered with bushes and weeds.

Leaders and Prophets Rebuked
3 Then I said,
“Listen, you leaders(A) of Jacob,
you rulers of Israel.
Should you not embrace justice,
2 you who hate good and love evil;
who tear the skin from my people
and the flesh from their bones;(B)
3 who eat my people’s flesh,(C)
strip off their skin
and break their bones in pieces;(D)
who chop(E) them up like meat for the pan,
like flesh for the pot?(F)”
4 Then they will cry out to the Lord,
but he will not answer them.(G)
At that time he will hide his face(H) from them
because of the evil they have done.(I)
5 This is what the Lord says:
“As for the prophets
who lead my people astray,(J)
they proclaim ‘peace’(K)
if they have something to eat,
but prepare to wage war against anyone
who refuses to feed them.
6 Therefore night will come over you, without visions,
and darkness, without divination.(L)
The sun will set for the prophets,(M)
and the day will go dark for them.(N)
7 The seers will be ashamed(O)
and the diviners disgraced.(P)
They will all cover(Q) their faces(R)
because there is no answer from God.(S)”
8 But as for me, I am filled with power,
with the Spirit of the Lord,
and with justice and might,
to declare to Jacob his transgression,
to Israel his sin.(T)
9 Hear this, you leaders of Jacob,
you rulers of Israel,
who despise justice
and distort all that is right;(U)
10 who build(V) Zion with bloodshed,(W)
and Jerusalem with wickedness.(X)
11 Her leaders judge for a bribe,(Y)
her priests teach for a price,(Z)
and her prophets tell fortunes for money.(AA)
Yet they look(AB) for the Lord’s support and say,
“Is not the Lord among us?
No disaster will come upon us.”(AC)
12 Therefore because of you,
Zion will be plowed like a field,
Jerusalem will become a heap of rubble,(AD)
the temple(AE) hill a mound overgrown with thickets.(AF)
