Contre les accapareurs
2 Malheur à ceux ╵qui méditent le mal
et trament des méfaits ╵alors qu’ils sont couchés.
Au point du jour, ╵ils vont les accomplir
en profitant de leur pouvoir.
2 Ils convoitent des champs, ╵ils s’en emparent,
des maisons, et ils s’en saisissent.
Ils oppriment les gens,
les dépouillant de leurs habitations ╵et de leurs terres.
3 C’est pourquoi l’Eternel déclare :
Contre cette nation ╵je projette un malheur :
il sera comme un joug ╵dont vous ne pourrez plus ╵vous dégager le cou.
Vous ne marcherez plus ╵la tête haute,
car ce temps qui arrive ╵est un temps de malheur.
4 En ce jour-là, ╵on vous citera en exemple ╵dans les proverbes.
On chantera sur vous ╵une lamentation.
On dira : « C’en est fait, ╵nous sommes dévastés, ╵totalement détruits ;
il fait passer à d’autres ╵la propriété de mon peuple.
Hélas, il me l’enlève
pour donner aux rebelles ╵nos terres en partage. »
5 Voilà pourquoi ╵vous n’aurez plus personne
dans l’assemblée de l’Eternel
pour vous distribuer ╵votre part du pays.
Contre les prophètes de la facilité
6 Voilà quelles paroles ╵débitent tous ces faux prophètes : ╵« Cessez donc de débiter des paroles[a] ! »
Cela ne détournera pas ╵l’outrage pour autant[b] !
7 Cependant, que dit-on
parmi le peuple de Jacob ?
« L’Eternel aurait-il ╵perdu patience,
est-ce bien là ╵sa manière d’agir ? »
Certes, pour ceux dont la conduite ╵est droite,
mes paroles sont bienveillantes[c].
8 Mais hier encore, ╵on a traité mon peuple ╵en ennemi[d].
Vous ôtez le manteau ╵de dessus la tunique
à ceux qui, sans défiance, ╵passent auprès de vous
au retour du combat.
9 Vous expulsez ╵des maisons qu’elles aiment,
les femmes de mon peuple ;
à leurs enfants ╵vous ôtez pour toujours
le glorieux patrimoine ╵que je leur ai donné[e].
10 Debout ! Allez-vous-en !
Car ce pays n’est plus ╵un lieu paisible
parce qu’il est souillé,
et il sera la cause
d’une terrible destruction[f] ;
la douleur en sera extrême.
11 Car si un homme vient ╵qui court après le vent,
qui profère des mensonges et qui dit :
« Pour toi je vais débiter des paroles[g],
distiller du bon vin[h], ╵des boissons enivrantes »,
cet homme-là devient ╵le distillateur de paroles ╵pour tout ce peuple !
Le Dieu qui rassemble
12 Descendants de Jacob, ╵je vous rassemblerai, ╵oui, Jacob tout entier,
et je vais réunir ╵les restes d’Israël,
je les ferai venir ensemble ╵tels des moutons ╵dans un enclos[i].
Et ils seront comme un troupeau ╵au milieu de son pâturage :
on entendra le bruit ╵d’une foule humaine en tumulte[j].
13 Celui qui fait la brèche ╵marchera devant eux.
Ils se presseront par la brèche,
ils franchiront la porte ╵et sortiront par elle.
Leur Roi marchera devant eux,
l’Eternel sera à leur tête.

1 [a]Ah! you plotters of iniquity,
who work out evil on your beds!
In the morning light you carry it out
for it lies within your power.
2 [b]You covet fields, and seize them;
houses, and take them;
You cheat owners of their houses,
people of their inheritance.
3 Therefore thus says the Lord:
Look, I am planning against this family an evil
from which you cannot free your necks;
Nor shall you walk with head held high,
for it will be an evil time.
4 On that day you shall be mocked,
and there will be bitter lament:
“Our ruin is complete,
our fields are divided among our captors,
The fields of my people are measured out,
and no one can get them back!”[c]
5 Thus you shall have no one
in the assembly of the Lord
to allot to you a share of land.
6 [d]“Do not preach,” they preach,
“no one should preach of these things!
Shame will not overtake us.”
7 How can it be said, house of Jacob,
“Is the Lord short of patience;
are these the Lord’s deeds?”
Do not my words promise good
to the one who walks in justice?
8 But you rise up against my people as an enemy:
you have stripped off the garment from the peaceful,
From those who go their way in confidence,
as though it were spoils of war.
9 The women of my people you drive out
from their pleasant houses;
From their children you take away
forever the honor I gave them.
10 [e]“Get up! Leave,
this is no place to rest”;
Because of uncleanness that destroys
with terrible destruction.
11 If one possessed of a lying spirit(A)
speaks deceitfully, saying,
“I will preach to you wine and strong drink,”
that one would be the preacher for this people.
12 [f]I will gather you, Jacob, each and every one,
I will assemble all the remnant of Israel;
I will group them like a flock in the fold,
like a herd in its pasture;
the noise of the people will resound.
13 The one who makes a breach goes up before them;
they make a breach and pass through the gate;
Their king shall go through before them,
the Lord at their head.

The cry “Ah” (hoy) begins a typical prophetic speech that is usually continued, as here (vv. 1–2), by a description of the addressees in terms of their unrighteous activities. This description is an indictment which gives the reasons for punishment announced to a particular group of people (vv. 3–5). The prophet spells out the crimes; the Lord announces the punishment, which corresponds to the crime: those who take the land of others will have their own land taken.
Those who plot iniquity and have the power to do it are wealthy landowners. The evil which they do consists in coveting the fields and houses of others and taking them.

To covet the “house” and other property of the neighbor was a violation of the Decalogue (Ex 20:17; 34:24; Dt 5:21).
The Lord, as owner of the earth, allotted the land by tribes and families to the people of Israel (Jos 13–19). Losing one’s inheritance diminished one’s place in the community and threatened the family’s economic viability and existence. According to Micah, those who used their power to expand their estates at the expense of weaker Israelites took more than land from them: they were tampering with the divine order.
- 2:4 Those who take land from the less powerful will in turn have their land taken away by invaders.
- 2:6–11 This unit is a disputation, an argument in which the prophet is debating with his opponents. The words of the opponents are given to us only as the prophet quotes them. The opponents accuse Micah of being a false prophet, and he reacts by accusing them of injustice and of preferring prophets and preachers who speak lies (v. 11).
- 2:10 The meaning of the Hebrew is uncertain.
- 2:12–13 This announcement of salvation to the “remnant of Israel” stands out dramatically in the context, and is probably a later addition to the words of Micah, coming from the time of the Babylonian exile. The content of the promise and the images are similar to those found in Second Isaiah, the great poet of Israel’s salvation and restoration (see Is 40:11; 43:5).

2 Woe to those who plan iniquity,
to those who plot evil(A) on their beds!(B)
At morning’s light they carry it out
because it is in their power to do it.
2 They covet fields(C) and seize them,(D)
and houses, and take them.
They defraud(E) people of their homes,
they rob them of their inheritance.(F)
3 Therefore, the Lord says:
“I am planning disaster(G) against this people,
from which you cannot save yourselves.
You will no longer walk proudly,(H)
for it will be a time of calamity.
4 In that day people will ridicule you;
they will taunt you with this mournful song:
‘We are utterly ruined;(I)
my people’s possession is divided up.(J)
He takes it from me!
He assigns our fields to traitors.’”
False Prophets
6 “Do not prophesy,” their prophets say.
“Do not prophesy about these things;
disgrace(M) will not overtake us.(N)”
7 You descendants of Jacob, should it be said,
“Does the Lord become[a] impatient?
Does he do such things?”
“Do not my words do good(O)
to the one whose ways are upright?(P)
8 Lately my people have risen up
like an enemy.
You strip off the rich robe
from those who pass by without a care,
like men returning from battle.
9 You drive the women of my people
from their pleasant homes.(Q)
You take away my blessing
from their children forever.
10 Get up, go away!
For this is not your resting place,(R)
because it is defiled,(S)
it is ruined, beyond all remedy.
11 If a liar and deceiver(T) comes and says,
‘I will prophesy for you plenty of wine and beer,’(U)
that would be just the prophet for this people!(V)

12 “I will surely gather all of you, Jacob;
I will surely bring together the remnant(W) of Israel.
I will bring them together like sheep in a pen,
like a flock in its pasture;
the place will throng with people.(X)
13 The One who breaks open the way will go up before(Y) them;
they will break through the gate(Z) and go out.
Their King will pass through before them,
the Lord at their head.”
