Israel’s Moral Decline

How sad for me!
For I am like one who—
when the summer fruit has been gathered
after the gleaning of the grape harvest(A)
finds no grape cluster to eat,
no early fig, which I crave.(B)
Godly people have vanished from the land;(C)
there is no one upright among the people.(D)
All of them wait in ambush to shed blood;(E)
they hunt each other with a net.(F)
Both hands are good(G) at accomplishing evil:
the official and the judge demand a bribe;(H)
when the powerful man communicates his evil desire,
they plot it together.
The best of them is like a brier;(I)
the most upright is worse than a hedge of thorns.(J)
The day of your watchmen,
the day of your punishment, is coming;(K)
at this time their panic is here.(L)
Do not rely on a friend;(M)
don’t trust in a close companion.
Seal your mouth
from the woman who lies in your arms.
Surely a son considers his father a fool,(N)
a daughter opposes her mother,
and a daughter-in-law is against her mother-in-law;
a man’s enemies are the men of his own household.
But I will look to the Lord;(O)
I will wait for the God of my salvation.(P)
My God will hear me.(Q)

Zion’s Vindication

Do not rejoice over me,(R) my enemy!
Though I have fallen, I will stand up;(S)
though I sit in darkness,
the Lord will be my light.(T)
Because I have sinned against Him,
I must endure the Lord’s rage
until He argues my case(U)
and establishes justice for me.(V)
He will bring me into the light;(W)
I will see His salvation.[a](X)
10 Then my enemy will see,
and she will be covered with shame,
the one who said to me,
“Where is the Lord your God?”(Y)
My eyes will look at her in triumph;
at that time she will be trampled
like mud in the streets.(Z)

11 A day will come for rebuilding your walls;(AA)
on that day your boundary will be extended.(AB)
12 On that day people will come to you(AC)
from Assyria and the cities of Egypt,
even from Egypt to the Euphrates River
and from sea to sea
and mountain to mountain.
13 Then the earth will become a wasteland(AD)
because of its inhabitants
and as a result of their actions.(AE)

Micah’s Prayer Answered

14 Shepherd Your people(AF) with Your staff,(AG)
the flock that is Your possession.
They live alone(AH) in a woodland
surrounded by pastures.
Let them graze in Bashan and Gilead(AI)
as in ancient times.(AJ)

15 I will perform miracles for them[b]
as in the days of your exodus
from the land of Egypt.(AK)
16 Nations will see and be ashamed
of[c] all their power.
They will put their hands over their mouths,(AL)
and their ears will become deaf.
17 They will lick the dust like a snake;(AM)
they will come trembling out of their hiding places(AN)
like reptiles slithering on the ground.(AO)
They will tremble in the presence of Yahweh our God;(AP)
they will stand in awe of You.

18 Who is a God like You,(AQ)
removing iniquity and passing over rebellion(AR)
for the remnant of His inheritance?(AS)
He does not hold on to His anger forever,(AT)
because He delights in faithful love.(AU)
19 He will again have compassion on us;
He will vanquish our iniquities.(AV)
You will cast all our[d] sins
into the depths of the sea.(AW)
20 You will show loyalty to Jacob(AX)
and faithful love to Abraham,
as You swore to our fathers(AY)
from days long ago.

L'ingiustizia universale

Ahimè! Sono diventato
come uno spigolatore d'estate,
come un racimolatore dopo la vendemmia!
Non un grappolo da mangiare,
non un fico per la mia voglia.
L'uomo pio è scomparso dalla terra,
non c'è più un giusto fra gli uomini:
tutti stanno in agguato
per spargere sangue;
ognuno dà la caccia con la rete al fratello.
Le loro mani son pronte per il male;
Non credete all'amico,
non fidatevi del compagno.
Custodisci le porte della tua bocca
davanti a colei che riposa vicino a te.
Il figlio insulta suo padre,
la figlia si rivolta contro la madre,
la nuora contro la suocera
e i nemici dell'uomo
sono quelli di casa sua.
Ma io volgo lo sguardo al Signore,
spero nel Dio della mia salvezza,
il mio Dio m'esaudirà.

IV. LE SPERANZE

Sion sotto gli insulti della nemica

Non gioire della mia sventura,
o mia nemica!
Se son caduta, mi rialzerò;
se siedo nelle tenebre,
il Signore sarà la mia luce.
Sopporterò lo sdegno del Signore
perchè ho peccato contro di lui,
finchè egli tratti la mia causa
e mi renda ragione,
finchè mi faccia uscire alla luce
e io veda la sua giustizia.
10 La mia nemica lo vedrà
e sarà coperta di vergogna,
lei che mi diceva:
«Dov'è il Signore tuo Dio?».
I miei occhi gioiranno nel vederla
calpestata come fango della strada.

Oracolo di restaurazione

11 E' il giorno in cui le tue mura
saranno riedificate;
in quel giorno più ampi saranno i tuoi confini;
12 in quel giorno si verrà a te
dall'Assiria fino all'Egitto,
dall'Egitto fino all'Eufrate,

in mezzo ai giardini;
pascolino in Basàn e in Gàlaad
come nei tempi antichi.
15 Come quando sei uscito dall'Egitto,
mostraci cose prodigiose.
16 Vedranno le genti e resteranno deluse
di tutta la loro potenza.
Si porranno la mano sulla bocca,
i loro orecchi ne resteranno assorditi.
17 Leccheranno la polvere come il serpente,
come i rettili della terra;
usciranno tremanti dai loro nascondigli,
trepideranno e di te avranno timore.

Invocazione del perdono divino

18 Qual dio è come te,
che toglie l'iniquità e perdona il peccato
al resto della sua eredità;
che non serba per sempre l'ira,
ma si compiace d'usar misericordia?
19 Egli tornerà ad aver pietà di noi,
calpesterà le nostre colpe.
Tu getterai in fondo al mare tutti i nostri peccati.
20 Conserverai a Giacobbe la tua fedeltà,
ad Abramo la tua benevolenza,
come hai giurato ai nostri padri
fino dai tempi antichi.

Israel’s Misery

What misery is mine!
I am like one who gathers summer fruit
    at the gleaning of the vineyard;
there is no cluster of grapes to eat,
    none of the early figs(A) that I crave.
The faithful have been swept from the land;(B)
    not one(C) upright person remains.
Everyone lies in wait(D) to shed blood;(E)
    they hunt each other(F) with nets.(G)
Both hands are skilled in doing evil;(H)
    the ruler demands gifts,
the judge accepts bribes,(I)
    the powerful dictate what they desire—
    they all conspire together.
The best of them is like a brier,(J)
    the most upright worse than a thorn(K) hedge.
The day God visits you has come,
    the day your watchmen sound the alarm.
    Now is the time of your confusion.(L)
Do not trust a neighbor;
    put no confidence in a friend.(M)
Even with the woman who lies in your embrace
    guard the words of your lips.
For a son dishonors his father,
    a daughter rises up against her mother,(N)
a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law—
    a man’s enemies are the members of his own household.(O)

But as for me, I watch(P) in hope(Q) for the Lord,
    I wait for God my Savior;
    my God will hear(R) me.

Israel Will Rise

Do not gloat over me,(S) my enemy!
    Though I have fallen, I will rise.(T)
Though I sit in darkness,
    the Lord will be my light.(U)
Because I have sinned against him,
    I will bear the Lord’s wrath,(V)
until he pleads my case(W)
    and upholds my cause.
He will bring me out into the light;(X)
    I will see his righteousness.(Y)
10 Then my enemy will see it
    and will be covered with shame,(Z)
she who said to me,
    “Where is the Lord your God?”(AA)
My eyes will see her downfall;(AB)
    even now she will be trampled(AC) underfoot
    like mire in the streets.

11 The day for building your walls(AD) will come,
    the day for extending your boundaries.
12 In that day people will come to you
    from Assyria(AE) and the cities of Egypt,
even from Egypt to the Euphrates
    and from sea to sea
    and from mountain to mountain.(AF)
13 The earth will become desolate because of its inhabitants,
    as the result of their deeds.(AG)

Prayer and Praise

14 Shepherd(AH) your people with your staff,(AI)
    the flock of your inheritance,
which lives by itself in a forest,
    in fertile pasturelands.[a](AJ)
Let them feed in Bashan(AK) and Gilead(AL)
    as in days long ago.(AM)

15 “As in the days when you came out of Egypt,
    I will show them my wonders.(AN)

16 Nations will see and be ashamed,(AO)
    deprived of all their power.
They will put their hands over their mouths(AP)
    and their ears will become deaf.
17 They will lick dust(AQ) like a snake,
    like creatures that crawl on the ground.
They will come trembling(AR) out of their dens;
    they will turn in fear(AS) to the Lord our God
    and will be afraid of you.
18 Who is a God(AT) like you,
    who pardons sin(AU) and forgives(AV) the transgression
    of the remnant(AW) of his inheritance?(AX)
You do not stay angry(AY) forever
    but delight to show mercy.(AZ)
19 You will again have compassion on us;
    you will tread our sins underfoot
    and hurl all our iniquities(BA) into the depths of the sea.(BB)
20 You will be faithful to Jacob,
    and show love to Abraham,(BC)
as you pledged on oath to our ancestors(BD)
    in days long ago.(BE)
