Wait for the God of Salvation

7 Woe is me! For I have become
    ^(A)as when the summer fruit has been gathered,
    as when the grapes have been gleaned:
there is no cluster to eat,
    no ^(B)first-ripe fig that my soul desires.
²^(C)The godly has perished from the earth,
    and ^(D)there is no one upright among mankind;
^(E)they all lie in wait for blood,
    and ^(F)each hunts the other with a net.
³^(G)Their hands are on what is evil, to do it well;
    ^(H)the prince and ^(I)the judge ask for a bribe,
and the great man utters the evil desire of his soul;
    thus they weave it together.
⁴The best of them is ^(J)like a brier,
    the most upright of them a thorn hedge.
The day of ^(K)your watchmen, of your punishment, has come;
    ^(L)now their confusion is at hand.
⁵^(M)Put no trust in a neighbor;
    have no confidence in a friend;
guard ^(N)the doors of your mouth
    from her who lies in your arms;^[a]
⁶for ^(O)the son treats the father with contempt,
    the daughter rises up against her mother,
the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law;
    ^(P)a man's enemies are the men of his own house.
⁷But as for me, I will look to the Lord;
    ^(Q)I will wait for the God of my salvation;
    my God will hear me.

⁸^(R)Rejoice not over me, O ^(S)my enemy;
    ^(T)when I fall, I shall rise;
^(U)when I sit in darkness,
    the Lord will be a light to me.
⁹^(V)I will bear the indignation of the Lord
    because I have sinned against him,
until ^(W)he pleads my cause
    and executes judgment for me.
^(X)He will bring me out to the light;
    I shall look upon his vindication.
¹⁰Then ^(Y)my enemy will see,
    and shame will cover her who ^(Z)said to me,
    “Where is the Lord your God?”
^(AA)My eyes will look upon her;
    now she will be trampled down
    ^(AB)like the mire of the streets.

¹¹^(AC)A day for the building of your walls!
    In that day the boundary shall be far extended.
¹²In that day they^[b] will come to you,
    ^(AD)from Assyria and the cities of Egypt,
and from Egypt to ^(AE)the River,^[c]
    ^(AF)from sea to sea and from mountain to mountain.
¹³But ^(AG)the earth will be desolate
    because of its inhabitants,
    for the fruit of their deeds.

¹⁴^(AH)Shepherd your people ^(AI)with your staff,
    the flock of your inheritance,
who dwell alone in a forest
    ^(AJ)in the midst of ^(AK)a garden land;^[d]
let them graze in Bashan and Gilead
    as in the days of old.
¹⁵^(AL)As in the days when you came out of the land of Egypt,
    I will show them^[e] marvelous things.
¹⁶^(AM)The nations shall see and be ashamed of all their might;
^(AN)they shall lay their hands on their mouths;
    their ears shall be deaf;
¹⁷^(AO)they shall lick the dust like a serpent,
    like the crawling things of the earth;
^(AP)they shall come trembling out of their strongholds;
    ^(AQ)they shall turn in dread to the Lord our God,
    and they shall be in fear of you.

God's Steadfast Love and Compassion

¹⁸^(AR)Who is a God like you, ^(AS)pardoning iniquity
    and passing over transgression
    ^(AT)for the remnant of his inheritance?
^(AU)He does not retain his anger forever,
    because he delights in steadfast love.
¹⁹He will ^(AV)again have compassion on us;
    ^(AW)he will tread our iniquities underfoot.
^(AX)You will cast all our^[f] sins
    into the depths of the sea.
²⁰^(AY)You will show faithfulness to Jacob
    and steadfast love to Abraham,
^(AZ)as you have sworn to our fathers
    from the days of old.

Give Thanks to the Lord, for He Is Good

106 ^(A)Praise the Lord!
^(B)Oh give thanks to the Lord, ^(C)for he is good,
    ^(D)for his steadfast love endures forever!
²Who can utter the mighty deeds of the Lord,
    or declare all his praise?
³Blessed are they who observe justice,
    who ^(E)do righteousness at all times!

⁴^(F)Remember me, O Lord, when you show favor to your people;
    help me when you save them,^[a]
⁵that I may look upon the prosperity of your ^(G)chosen ones,
    that I may rejoice in the gladness of your nation,
    that I may glory with your inheritance.

⁶^(H)Both we and ^(I)our fathers have sinned;
    we have committed iniquity; we have done wickedness.
⁷Our fathers, when they were in Egypt,
    did not consider your wondrous works;
they ^(J)did not remember the abundance of your steadfast love,
    but ^(K)rebelled by the sea, at the Red Sea.
⁸Yet he saved them ^(L)for his name's sake,
    ^(M)that he might make known his mighty power.
⁹He ^(N)rebuked the Red Sea, and it ^(O)became dry,
    and he ^(P)led them through the deep as through a desert.
¹⁰So he ^(Q)saved them from the hand of the foe
    and ^(R)redeemed them from the power of the enemy.
¹¹And ^(S)the waters covered their adversaries;
    not one of them was left.
¹²Then ^(T)they believed his words;
    they ^(U)sang his praise.

¹³But they soon ^(V)forgot his works;
    they did not wait for ^(W)his counsel.
¹⁴But they had ^(X)a wanton craving in the wilderness,
    and ^(Y)put God to the test in the desert;
¹⁵he ^(Z)gave them what they asked,
    but sent ^(AA)a wasting disease among them.

¹⁶When men in the camp ^(AB)were jealous of Moses
    and Aaron, ^(AC)the holy one of the Lord,
¹⁷^(AD)the earth opened and swallowed up Dathan,
    and covered the company of Abiram.
¹⁸^(AE)Fire also broke out in their company;
    the flame burned up the wicked.

¹⁹They ^(AF)made a calf in Horeb
    and worshiped a metal image.
²⁰They ^(AG)exchanged the glory of God^[b]
    for the image of an ox that eats grass.
²¹They ^(AH)forgot God, their Savior,
    who had done great things in Egypt,
²²wondrous works in ^(AI)the land of Ham,
    and awesome deeds by the Red Sea.
²³Therefore ^(AJ)he said he would destroy them—
    had not Moses, his ^(AK)chosen one,
^(AL)stood in the breach before him,
    to turn away his wrath from destroying them.

²⁴Then they ^(AM)despised ^(AN)the pleasant land,
    having ^(AO)no faith in his promise.
²⁵They ^(AP)murmured in their tents,
    and did not obey the voice of the Lord.
²⁶Therefore he ^(AQ)raised his hand and swore to them
    that he would make them fall in the wilderness,
²⁷and would make their offspring fall among the nations,
    ^(AR)scattering them among the lands.

²⁸Then they ^(AS)yoked themselves to the ^(AT)Baal of Peor,
    and ate sacrifices offered to ^(AU)the dead;
²⁹they provoked the Lord to anger with their deeds,
    and a plague broke out among them.
³⁰Then ^(AV)Phinehas stood up and intervened,
    and the plague was stayed.
³¹And that was ^(AW)counted to him as righteousness
    from generation to generation forever.

³²They ^(AX)angered him at the waters of Meribah,
and it went ill with Moses on their account,
³³for they ^(AY)made his spirit bitter,^[c]
and he ^(AZ)spoke rashly with his lips.

³⁴They did not ^(BA)destroy the peoples,
    ^(BB)as the Lord commanded them,
³⁵but they ^(BC)mixed with the nations
    and learned to do as they did.
³⁶They served their idols,
    which became ^(BD)a snare to them.
³⁷They ^(BE)sacrificed their sons
    and their daughters to ^(BF)the demons;
³⁸they poured out innocent blood,
    the blood of their sons and daughters,
whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan,
    and the land was ^(BG)polluted with blood.
³⁹Thus they ^(BH)became unclean by their acts,
    and ^(BI)played the whore in their deeds.

⁴⁰Then ^(BJ)the anger of the Lord was kindled against ^(BK)his people,
    and he abhorred his ^(BL)heritage;
⁴¹he ^(BM)gave them into the hand of the nations,
    so that those who hated them ruled over them.
⁴²Their enemies ^(BN)oppressed them,
    and they were brought into subjection under their power.
⁴³^(BO)Many times he delivered them,
    but they were rebellious in their ^(BP)purposes
    and were ^(BQ)brought low through their iniquity.

⁴⁴Nevertheless, he looked upon their distress,
    when he ^(BR)heard their cry.
⁴⁵For their sake he ^(BS)remembered his covenant,
    and ^(BT)relented according to ^(BU)the abundance of his steadfast love.
⁴⁶He caused them to be ^(BV)pitied
    by all those who held them captive.

⁴⁷^(BW)Save us, O Lord our God,
and ^(BX)gather us from among the nations,
that we may give thanks to your holy name
and glory in your praise.

⁴⁸^(BY)Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
from everlasting to everlasting!
^(BZ)And let all the people say, “Amen!”
^(CA)Praise the Lord!

Evil in the Land

7 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: ²^(A)“Stand in the gate of the Lord's house, and proclaim there this word, and say, Hear the word of the Lord, all you men of Judah who enter these gates to worship the Lord. ³Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: ^(B)Amend your ways and your deeds, and I will let you dwell in this place. ⁴^(C)Do not trust in these deceptive words: ‘This is the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord.’

⁵“For if you truly ^(D)amend your ways and your deeds, if you truly ^(E)execute justice one with another, ⁶if you ^(F)do not oppress the sojourner, the fatherless, or the widow, ^(G)or shed innocent blood in this place, ^(H)and if you do not go after other gods to your own harm, ⁷^(I)then I will let you dwell in this place, ^(J)in the land that I gave of old to your fathers forever.

⁸“Behold, you trust in deceptive words to no avail. ⁹^(K)Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, ^(L)swear falsely, ^(M)make offerings to Baal, ^(N)and go after other gods that you have not known, ¹⁰and then come and stand before me in this house, ^(O)which is called by my name, and say, ‘We are delivered!’—only to go on doing all these abominations? ¹¹^(P)Has this house, ^(Q)which is called by my name, ^(R)become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, I myself have seen it, declares the Lord. ¹²Go now to ^(S)my place that was in Shiloh, ^(T)where I made my name dwell at first, and ^(U)see what I did to it because of the evil of my people Israel. ¹³And now, because you have done all these things, declares the Lord, and ^(V)when I spoke to you persistently you did not listen, and ^(W)when I called you, you did not answer, ¹⁴therefore I will do to ^(X)the house ^(Y)that is called by my name, and in which you trust, and to the place that I gave to you and to your fathers, ^(Z)as I did to Shiloh. ¹⁵^(AA)And I will cast you out of my sight, ^(AB)as I cast out all your kinsmen, all the offspring of ^(AC)Ephraim.

¹⁶“As for you, ^(AD)do not pray for this people, or lift up a cry or prayer for them, and do not intercede with me, for I will not hear you. ¹⁷Do you not see what they are doing in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? ¹⁸The children gather wood, the fathers kindle fire, ^(AE)and the women knead dough, to ^(AF)make cakes for ^(AG)the queen of heaven. And ^(AH)they pour out drink offerings to other gods, ^(AI)to provoke me to anger. ¹⁹^(AJ)Is it I whom they provoke? declares the Lord. Is it not themselves, ^(AK)to their own shame? ²⁰Therefore thus says the Lord God: Behold, ^(AL)my anger and my wrath will be poured out on this place, upon man and beast, upon the trees of the field and the fruit of the ground; ^(AM)it will burn and not be quenched.”

²¹Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: ^(AN)“Add your burnt offerings to your sacrifices, and eat the flesh. ²²For in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, I did not speak to your fathers or command them ^(AO)concerning burnt offerings and sacrifices. ²³But this command I gave them: ^(AP)‘Obey my voice, and ^(AQ)I will be your God, and you shall be my people. ^(AR)And walk in all the way that I command you, ^(AS)that it may be well with you.’ ²⁴^(AT)But they did not obey or incline their ear, ^(AU)but walked in their own counsels and ^(AV)the stubbornness of their evil hearts, and ^(AW)went backward and not forward. ²⁵From the day that your fathers came out of the land of Egypt to this day, ^(AX)I have persistently sent all my servants the prophets to them, day after day. ²⁶^(AY)Yet they did not listen to me or incline their ear, ^(AZ)but stiffened their neck. ^(BA)They did worse than their fathers.

²⁷^(BB)“So you shall speak all these words to them, but they will not listen to you. ^(BC)You shall call to them, but they will not answer you. ²⁸And you shall say to them, ‘This is the nation that did not obey the voice of the Lord their God, and did not accept discipline; ^(BD)truth has perished; it is cut off from their lips.

²⁹^(BE)“‘Cut off your hair and cast it away;
raise a lamentation on ^(BF)the bare heights,
for the Lord has rejected and forsaken
the generation of his wrath.’

The Valley of Slaughter

³⁰“For the sons of Judah have done evil in my sight, declares the Lord. They have set ^(BG)their detestable things in the house ^(BH)that is called by my name, to ^(BI)defile it. ³¹And they have built the high places of ^(BJ)Topheth, which is in ^(BK)the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, ^(BL)to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire, ^(BM)which I did not command, nor did it come into my mind. ³²^(BN)Therefore, behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when it will no more be called ^(BO)Topheth, or ^(BP)the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter; ^(BQ)for they will bury in Topheth, because there is no room elsewhere. ³³^(BR)And the dead bodies of this people will be food for the birds of the air, and for the beasts of the earth, ^(BS)and none will frighten them away. ³⁴^(BT)And I will silence in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, ^(BU)for the land shall become a waste.
