The voice of Yahweh will call to the city—
And it is sound wisdom to fear Your name:
“Hear, O tribe. Who even has appointed [a]its time?
10 Is there yet a man in the wicked house,
Along with treasures of (A)wickedness,
And a [b](B)short measure which is cursed?
11 Can I purify wicked (C)scales
And a bag of deceptive weights?
12 For the rich men of [c]the city are full of (D)violence,
And her inhabitants speak (E)lies,
And their (F)tongue is deceitful in their mouth.
13 So also I will make you (G)sick, striking you down,
(H)Desolating you because of your sins.
14 You will eat, but you will (I)not be satisfied,
And your [d]vileness will be in your midst.
And you will try to remove something for safekeeping,
But you will (J)not cause anything to escape,
And that which you do have escape, I will give to the sword.
15 You will sow but you will (K)not reap.
You will tread the olive but will not anoint yourself with oil;
And the grapes, but you will (L)not drink wine.
16 The statutes of (M)Omri
And all the works of the house of (N)Ahab are kept;
And in their counsels you (O)walk.
Therefore I will give you up as (P)an object of horror
And [e]your inhabitants as an (Q)object of hissing,
And you will bear the (R)reproach of My people.”

Cheating and Violence to Be Punished

The voice of the Lord cries to the city
    (and he shall save those who fear his name[a]):
Hear, O tribe and assembly of the city![b]
10     Can I forget[c] the treasures of wickedness in the house of the wicked
    and the despicable false measure?(A)
11 Can I tolerate wicked scales
    and a bag of dishonest weights?(B)
12 Your[d] wealthy are full of violence;
    your[e] inhabitants speak lies
    with tongues of deceit in their mouths.
13 Therefore I have begun[f] to strike you down,
    making you desolate because of your sins.(C)
14 You shall eat but not be satisfied,
    and there shall be a gnawing hunger within you;
you shall put away but not save,
    and what you save, I will hand over to the sword.(D)
15 You shall sow but not reap;
    you shall tread olives but not anoint yourselves with oil;
    you shall tread grapes but not drink wine.(E)
16 For you have kept the statutes of Omri[g]
    and all the works of the house of Ahab,
    and you have followed their counsels.
Therefore I will make you a desolation and your[h] inhabitants an object of hissing,
    so you shall bear the scorn of my people.(F)
