God’s dispute with Israel
6 Hear what the Lord is saying:
Arise, lay out the lawsuit before the mountains;
let the hills hear your voice!
2 Hear, mountains, the lawsuit of the Lord!
Hear, eternal foundations of the earth!
The Lord has a lawsuit against his people;
with Israel he will argue.
3 “My people, what did I ever do to you?
How have I wearied you? Answer me!
4 I brought you up out of the land of Egypt;
I redeemed you from the house of slavery.
I sent Moses, Aaron, and Miriam before you.
5 My people, remember what Moab’s King Balak had planned,
and how Balaam, Beor’s son, answered him!
Remember everything[a] from Shittim to Gilgal,
that you might learn to recognize the righteous acts of the Lord!”
What does the Lord require?
6 With what should I approach the Lord
and bow down before God on high?
Should I come before him with entirely burned offerings,
with year-old calves?
7 Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams,
with many torrents of oil?
Should I give my oldest child for my crime;
the fruit of my body for the sin of my spirit?
8 He has told you, human one, what is good and
what the Lord requires from you:
to do justice, embrace faithful love, and walk humbly with your God.
Punishment is near
9 The voice of the Lord calls out to the city;
wisdom appears when one fears your name.[b]
Hear, tribe, and who appointed her![c]
10 Are the treasures of wickedness still in the house of wickedness,
while the shorted basket[d] is denounced?[e]
11 Can I approve wicked scales and a bag of false weights
12 in a city[f] whose wealthy are full of violence
and whose inhabitants speak falsehood
with lying tongues in their mouths?
13 So I have made you sick by striking you!
I have struck you because of your sins.
14 You devour, but you aren’t satisfied;
a gnawing emptiness is within you.
You put something aside,
but you don’t keep it safe.
That which you do try to keep safe,
I will give to the sword.
15 You sow, but you don’t gather.
You tread down olives, but you don’t anoint with oil;
you tread grapes, but don’t drink wine.
16 Yet you[g] have kept the policies of Omri,
all the practices of the house of Ahab;
you have followed their counsels.
Therefore, I will make you a sign of destruction,
your[h] inhabitants an object of hissing!
You must bear the reproach of my people.

6 Hear ye now what the Lord saith; Arise, contend thou before the mountains, and let the hills hear thy voice.
2 Hear ye, O mountains, the Lord's controversy, and ye strong foundations of the earth: for the Lord hath a controversy with his people, and he will plead with Israel.
3 O my people, what have I done unto thee? and wherein have I wearied thee? testify against me.
4 For I brought thee up out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed thee out of the house of servants; and I sent before thee Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.
5 O my people, remember now what Balak king of Moab consulted, and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him from Shittim unto Gilgal; that ye may know the righteousness of the Lord.
6 Wherewith shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before the high God? shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves of a year old?
7 Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?
8 He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?
9 The Lord's voice crieth unto the city, and the man of wisdom shall see thy name: hear ye the rod, and who hath appointed it.
10 Are there yet the treasures of wickedness in the house of the wicked, and the scant measure that is abominable?
11 Shall I count them pure with the wicked balances, and with the bag of deceitful weights?
12 For the rich men thereof are full of violence, and the inhabitants thereof have spoken lies, and their tongue is deceitful in their mouth.
13 Therefore also will I make thee sick in smiting thee, in making thee desolate because of thy sins.
14 Thou shalt eat, but not be satisfied; and thy casting down shall be in the midst of thee; and thou shalt take hold, but shalt not deliver; and that which thou deliverest will I give up to the sword.
15 Thou shalt sow, but thou shalt not reap; thou shalt tread the olives, but thou shalt not anoint thee with oil; and sweet wine, but shalt not drink wine.
16 For the statutes of Omri are kept, and all the works of the house of Ahab, and ye walk in their counsels; that I should make thee a desolation, and the inhabitants thereof an hissing: therefore ye shall bear the reproach of my people.

6 So listen now to what Adonai says:
“Stand up and state your case to the mountains,
let the hills hear what you have to say.”
2 Listen, mountains, to Adonai’s case;
also you enduring rocks that support the earth!
Adonai has a case against his people;
he wants to argue it out with Isra’el:
3 “My people, what have I done to you?
How have I wearied you? Answer me!
4 I brought you up from the land of Egypt.
I redeemed you from a life of slavery.
I sent Moshe, Aharon
and Miryam to lead you.
5 My people, just remember what Balak
the king of Mo’av had planned,
what Bil‘am the son of B‘or answered him,
[and what happened] between Sheetim and Gilgal —
so that you will understand
the saving deeds of Adonai.”
6 “With what can I come before Adonai
to bow down before God on high?
Should I come before him with burnt offerings?
with calves in their first year?
7 Would Adonai take delight in thousands of rams
with ten thousand rivers of olive oil?
Could I give my firstborn to pay for my crimes,
the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?”
8 Human being, you have already been told
what is good, what Adonai demands of you —
no more than to act justly, love grace
and walk in purity with your God.
9 The voice of Adonai! He calls to the city —
and it is wisdom to fear your name —
“Listen to the rod and to him who commissioned it.
10 Are there still ill-gotten gains in the house of the wicked?
still the detestable short eifah-measure?
11 Should I declare innocent wicked scales
and a bag of fraudulent weights?
12 The rich men there are full of violence,
the inhabitants tell lies,
with tongues of deceit in their mouths.
13 “Therefore, I am starting to strike you down,
to destroy you because of your sins.
14 You will eat but not be satisfied,
with hunger gnawing inside you.
You will conceive but not give birth;
if you do give birth, I will give him to the sword.
15 You will sow but will not reap,
you will press olives but not rub yourself with oil,
likewise you will press grapes but not drink the wine.
16 For you keep the regulations of ‘Omri
and all the practices of the house of Ach’av,
modeling yourselves on their advice.
Therefore I will make you an object of horror,
the inhabitants of this city a cause for contempt;
you will suffer the insults aimed at my people.”

6 Escuchen lo que dice el Señor:
«Levántate, presenta tu pleito ante las montañas;
deja que las colinas oigan tu voz».
2 Montañas, escuchen el pleito del Señor;
presten atención, firmes cimientos de la tierra.
Porque el Señor tiene un pleito contra su pueblo,
presenta una acusación contra Israel:
3 «Pueblo mío, ¿qué te he hecho?
¿En qué te he ofendido? ¡Respóndeme!
4 Yo fui quien te sacó de Egipto,
quien te libró de esa tierra de esclavitud.
Yo envié a Moisés, Aarón y Miriam
para que te dirigieran.
5 Recuerda, pueblo mío,
lo que pidió Balac, rey de Moab,
y lo que le respondió Balán, hijo de Beor.
Recuerda tu paso desde Sitín hasta Guilgal,
y reconoce que el Señor actuó con justicia».
6 ¿Con qué me presentaré ante el Señor
y me postraré ante el Dios Altísimo?
¿Podré presentarme con holocaustos
o con becerros de un año?
7 ¿Se complacerá el Señor con miles de carneros
o con diez mil arroyos de aceite?
¿Ofreceré a mi primogénito por mi delito,
al fruto de mis entrañas por mi pecado?
8 ¡Él te ha mostrado, oh mortal, lo que es bueno!
¿Y qué es lo que espera de ti el Señor?:
Practicar la justicia,
amar la misericordia
y caminar humildemente ante tu Dios.
Castigo por delitos económicos y sociales
9 La voz del Señor clama a la ciudad
y es de sabios temer a su nombre:
«¡Escuchen, pueblo de Judá y asamblea de la ciudad![a]
10 ¡Malvados!
¿Debo tolerar sus tesoros mal habidos
y sus odiosas medidas adulteradas?
11 ¿Debo tener por justas la balanza falsa
y la bolsa de pesas alteradas?
12 Los ricos de la ciudad son gente violenta;
sus habitantes son gente mentirosa;
y sus lenguas hablan con engaño.
13 Por lo que a mí toca, te demoleré a golpes,
te destruiré por tus pecados.
14 Comerás, pero no te saciarás,
sino que seguirás padeciendo hambre.[b]
Almacenarás, pero no salvarás nada,
porque lo que salves lo daré a la espada.
15 Sembrarás, pero no cosecharás;
prensarás las aceitunas, pero no usarás el aceite;
pisarás las uvas, pero no beberás el vino.
16 Tú sigues fielmente los decretos de Omrí
y todas las prácticas de la dinastía de Acab;
te conduces según sus consejos.
Por eso voy a entregarte a la destrucción
y a poner en ridículo a tus habitantes.
¡Tendrás que soportar el insulto de los pueblos!».[c]
