“In that day,” declares Yahweh,
“I will assemble the (A)lame
And (B)gather the banished,
Even those upon whom I have brought calamity.
I will make the lame a (C)remnant
And the outcasts a mighty nation,
And (D)Yahweh will reign over them in Mount Zion
From now on and forever.
And as for you, [a](E)tower of the flock,
[b]Hill of the daughter of Zion,
To you it will come—
Even the (F)former dominion will come,
The kingdom of the daughter of Jerusalem.

“Now, why do you (G)make a loud shout?
Is there no king among you,
Or has your (H)counselor perished,
That writhing has taken hold of you like a woman in childbirth?
10 (I)Writhe and labor to give birth,
Daughter of Zion,
Like a woman in childbirth;
For now you will (J)go out of the city,
Dwell in the field,
And go to Babylon.
(K)There you will be delivered;
(L)There Yahweh will redeem you
From the hand of your enemies.
11 But now (M)many nations have been assembled against you
Who say, ‘Let her be polluted,
And let our eyes behold Zion in triumph.’
12 But they do not (N)know the thoughts of Yahweh,
And they do not understand His counsel;
For He has gathered them like sheaves to the threshing floor.
13 Arise and (O)thresh, daughter of Zion,
For your horn I will make iron,
And your hoofs I will make bronze,
That you may (P)pulverize many peoples,
That you may (Q)devote to Yahweh their greedy gain unto destruction
And their wealth to the Lord of all the earth.

Restoration Promised after Exile

In that day, says the Lord,
    I will assemble the lame
and gather those who have been driven away,
    and those whom I have afflicted;
and the lame I will make the remnant;
    and those who were cast off, a strong nation;
and the Lord will reign over them in Mount Zion
    from this time forth and for evermore.

And you, O tower of the flock,
    hill of the daughter of Zion,
to you shall it come,
    the former dominion shall come,
    the kingdom of the daughter of Jerusalem.

Now why do you cry aloud?
    Is there no king in you?
Has your counselor perished,
    that pangs have seized you like a woman in travail?
10 Writhe and groan,[a] O daughter of Zion,
    like a woman in travail;
for now you shall go forth from the city
    and dwell in the open country;
    you shall go to Babylon.
There you shall be rescued,
    there the Lord will redeem you
    from the hand of your enemies.

11 Now many nations
    are assembled against you,
saying, “Let her be profaned,
    and let our eyes gaze upon Zion.”
12 But they do not know
    the thoughts of the Lord,
they do not understand his plan,
    that he has gathered them as sheaves to the threshing floor.
13 Arise and thresh,
    O daughter of Zion,
for I will make your horn iron
    and your hoofs bronze;
you shall beat in pieces many peoples,
    and shall[b] devote their gain to the Lord,
    their wealth to the Lord of the whole earth.
