They will (A)shepherd the land of Assyria with the sword,
The land of (B)Nimrod at its entrances;
And He will (C)rescue us from the Assyrian
When he invades our land,
And when he tramples our territory.

Then the (D)remnant of Jacob
Will be among many peoples
Like (E)dew from the Lord,
Like (F)showers on vegetation
That do not wait for man,
Or delay for [a]mankind.
The remnant of Jacob
Will be among the nations,
Among many peoples
(G)Like a lion among the animals of the forest,
Like a young lion among flocks of sheep,
Which, if he passes through,
(H)Tramples and (I)tears,
And there is (J)no one who can rescue.
Your hand will be (K)lifted up against your adversaries,
And all your enemies will be eliminated.

10 “And it will be on that day,” declares the Lord,
(L)That I will eliminate your (M)horses from among you,
And destroy your chariots.
11 I will also eliminate the (N)cities of your land,
And tear down all your (O)fortifications.
12 I will eliminate (P)sorceries from your hand,
And you will have no fortune-tellers.
13 (Q)I will eliminate your carved images
And your memorial stones from among you,
So that you will no longer bow down
To the work of your hands.
14 I will uproot your [b](R)Asherim from among you,
And destroy your cities.
15 And I will (S)execute vengeance in anger and wrath
On the nations which have not obeyed.”

God’s Indictment of His People

Hear now what the Lord is saying,
“Arise, plead your case [c]before the mountains,
And let the hills hear your voice.
Listen, you mountains, to the indictment by the Lord,
And you enduring (T)foundations of the earth,
Because the (U)Lord has a case against His people;
And He will dispute with Israel.
(V)My people, (W)what have I done to you,
And (X)how have I wearied you? Answer Me.
Indeed, I (Y)brought you up from the land of Egypt,
I (Z)redeemed you from the house of slavery,
And I sent before you (AA)Moses, Aaron, and (AB)Miriam.
My people, remember now
What (AC)Balak king of Moab planned
And what Balaam son of Beor answered him,
And what happened from (AD)Shittim to (AE)Gilgal,
[d]So that you might know the (AF)righteous acts of the Lord.”

What God Requires of Mankind

(AG)With what shall I come to the Lord
And bow myself before the God on high?
Shall I come to Him with (AH)burnt offerings,
With yearling calves?
Does the Lord take pleasure in (AI)thousands of rams,
In ten thousand rivers of [e]oil?
Shall I give Him my (AJ)firstborn for my wrongdoings,
The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?
He has (AK)told you, mortal one, what is good;
And (AL)what does the Lord require of you
But to (AM)do justice, to (AN)love [f]kindness,
And to walk [g](AO)humbly with your God?

The Lord’s Case Against Israel

Listen to what the Lord says:

“Stand up, plead my case before the mountains;(T)
    let the hills hear what you have to say.

“Hear,(U) you mountains, the Lord’s accusation;(V)
    listen, you everlasting foundations of the earth.
For the Lord has a case(W) against his people;
