And they shall waste the land of Assyria with the sword, and the land of Nimrod in the entrances thereof: thus shall he deliver us from the Assyrian, when he cometh into our land, and when he treadeth within our borders.

And the remnant of Jacob shall be in the midst of many people as a dew from the Lord, as the showers upon the grass, that tarrieth not for man, nor waiteth for the sons of men.

And the remnant of Jacob shall be among the Gentiles in the midst of many people as a lion among the beasts of the forest, as a young lion among the flocks of sheep: who, if he go through, both treadeth down, and teareth in pieces, and none can deliver.

Thine hand shall be lifted up upon thine adversaries, and all thine enemies shall be cut off.

10 And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord, that I will cut off thy horses out of the midst of thee, and I will destroy thy chariots:

11 And I will cut off the cities of thy land, and throw down all thy strong holds:

12 And I will cut off witchcrafts out of thine hand; and thou shalt have no more soothsayers:

13 Thy graven images also will I cut off, and thy standing images out of the midst of thee; and thou shalt no more worship the work of thine hands.

14 And I will pluck up thy groves out of the midst of thee: so will I destroy thy cities.

15 And I will execute vengeance in anger and fury upon the heathen, such as they have not heard.

Hear ye now what the Lord saith; Arise, contend thou before the mountains, and let the hills hear thy voice.

Hear ye, O mountains, the Lord's controversy, and ye strong foundations of the earth: for the Lord hath a controversy with his people, and he will plead with Israel.

O my people, what have I done unto thee? and wherein have I wearied thee? testify against me.

For I brought thee up out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed thee out of the house of servants; and I sent before thee Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.

O my people, remember now what Balak king of Moab consulted, and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him from Shittim unto Gilgal; that ye may know the righteousness of the Lord.

Wherewith shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before the high God? shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves of a year old?

Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?

He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?

who will rule[a] the land of Assyria with the sword,
the land of Nimrod(A) with drawn sword.[b](B)
He will deliver us from the Assyrians
    when they invade our land
    and march across our borders.(C)

The remnant(D) of Jacob will be
in the midst of many peoples
like dew(E) from the Lord,
    like showers on the grass,(F)
which do not wait for anyone
    or depend on man.
The remnant of Jacob will be among the nations,
in the midst of many peoples,
like a lion among the beasts of the forest,(G)
like a young lion among flocks of sheep,
which mauls and mangles(H) as it goes,
    and no one can rescue.(I)
Your hand will be lifted up(J) in triumph over your enemies,
and all your foes will be destroyed.

10 “In that day,” declares the Lord,

“I will destroy your horses from among you
    and demolish your chariots.(K)
11 I will destroy the cities(L) of your land
and tear down all your strongholds.(M)
12 I will destroy your witchcraft
and you will no longer cast spells.(N)
13 I will destroy your idols(O)
and your sacred stones from among you;(P)
you will no longer bow down
to the work of your hands.(Q)
14 I will uproot from among you your Asherah poles[c](R)
    when I demolish your cities.
15 I will take vengeance(S) in anger and wrath
on the nations that have not obeyed me.”

The Lord’s Case Against Israel

Listen to what the Lord says:

“Stand up, plead my case before the mountains;(T)
let the hills hear what you have to say.

“Hear,(U) you mountains, the Lord’s accusation;(V)
listen, you everlasting foundations of the earth.
For the Lord has a case(W) against his people;
he is lodging a charge(X) against Israel.

“My people, what have I done to you?
    How have I burdened(Y) you?(Z) Answer me.
I brought you up out of Egypt(AA)
and redeemed you from the land of slavery.(AB)
I sent Moses(AC) to lead you,
    also Aaron(AD) and Miriam.(AE)
My people, remember
what Balak(AF) king of Moab plotted
and what Balaam son of Beor answered.
Remember your journey from Shittim(AG) to Gilgal,(AH)
that you may know the righteous acts(AI) of the Lord.”

With what shall I come before(AJ) the Lord
and bow down before the exalted God?
Shall I come before him with burnt offerings,
    with calves a year old?(AK)
Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams,(AL)
with ten thousand rivers of olive oil?(AM)
Shall I offer my firstborn(AN) for my transgression,
the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?(AO)
He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.
And what does the Lord require of you?
To act justly(AP) and to love mercy
and to walk humbly[d](AQ) with your God.(AR)
