Because of this I must mourn and wail,
I must go (A)barefoot and naked;
I must do mourning like the (B)jackals,
And a mourning like the ostriches.
For her (C)wound is incurable,
For (D)it has come to Judah;
It has reached the (E)gate of my people,
Even to Jerusalem.
10 (F)Do not tell it in Gath,
Do not weep at all.
At [a]Beth-le-aphrah roll yourself in the dust in mourning.
11 [b]Go on your way, inhabitant of [c]Shaphir, in (G)shameful nakedness.
The inhabitant of [d](H)Zaanan does not [e]escape.
The mourning of [f]Beth-ezel: “He will take from you its [g]support.”
12 For the inhabitant of [h]Maroth
[i](I)Waits for something good,
Because a disaster has come down from the Lord
To the (J)gate of Jerusalem.
13 Harness the chariot to the team of horses,
You inhabitant of (K)Lachish—
She was the beginning of sin
To the daughter of Zion—
Because in you were found
The (L)rebellious acts of Israel.
14 Therefore you will give parting (M)gifts
In behalf of Moresheth-gath;
The houses of (N)Achzib will become a [j](O)deception
To the kings of Israel.
15 Moreover, I will bring on you
The one who takes possession,
You inhabitant of [k](P)Mareshah.
The glory of Israel will enter (Q)Adullam.
16 Shave yourself (R)bald, yes, cut off your hair,
Because of the children of your delight;
Extend your baldness like the eagle,
For they will (S)go from you into exile.

The Coming Destruction

“Therefore I will cry out and grieve loudly;
    I will walk around stripped and naked.
I will cry out like a jackal
    and mourn like a company of ostriches.
For Samaria’s[a] injury is fatal,
    reaching all the way to Judah,
        extending even to the gate of my people—to Jerusalem.”

10 “Don’t discuss it in Gath![b]
    Don’t cry bitterly in Akim![c]
        Roll in the ashes, Beth-leaphrah!
11 Run away, you residents of Shaphir,
    displaying your shameful nakedness.
Don’t come out, you residents of Zaanan![d]
    Your firm standing will disappear as Beth-ezel mourns.
12 Even though the inhabitants of Maroth long for success,
    nevertheless evil descended from the Lord to the gate of Jerusalem.

13 “You inhabitants of Lachish, harness your chariot to your swiftest steed—
    the daughter of Zion has begun to sin—
because within you the transgressions of Israel were revealed.
14 Therefore give your gifts to Moresheth-gath;
    that is, the houses of Achzib as a deceitful symbol[e] to the kings of Israel.
15 Nevertheless, I will deliver an heir to you, inhabitants of Mareshah—
    to Adullam the glory of Israel will come.

16 “Shave your head
    and cut off your locks as you mourn your beloved children.
Make yourself bald as an eagle,
    because they will go from you into exile!”

Weeping and Mourning

Because of this I will weep(A) and wail;
    I will go about barefoot(B) and naked.
I will howl like a jackal
    and moan like an owl.
For Samaria’s plague(C) is incurable;(D)
    it has spread to Judah.(E)
It has reached the very gate(F) of my people,
    even to Jerusalem itself.
10 Tell it not in Gath[a];
    weep not at all.
In Beth Ophrah[b]
    roll in the dust.
11 Pass by naked(G) and in shame,
    you who live in Shaphir.[c]
Those who live in Zaanan[d]
    will not come out.
Beth Ezel is in mourning;
    it no longer protects you.
12 Those who live in Maroth[e] writhe in pain,
    waiting for relief,(H)
because disaster(I) has come from the Lord,
    even to the gate of Jerusalem.
13 You who live in Lachish,(J)
    harness fast horses to the chariot.
You are where the sin of Daughter Zion(K) began,
    for the transgressions of Israel were found in you.
14 Therefore you will give parting gifts(L)
    to Moresheth(M) Gath.
The town of Akzib[f](N) will prove deceptive(O)
    to the kings of Israel.
15 I will bring a conqueror against you
    who live in Mareshah.[g](P)
The nobles of Israel
    will flee to Adullam.(Q)
16 Shave(R) your head in mourning
    for the children in whom you delight;
make yourself as bald as the vulture,
    for they will go from you into exile.(S)
