²⁰ “Tell it not in Gath,^(A)
    proclaim it not in the streets of Ashkelon,^(B)
lest the daughters of the Philistines^(C) be glad,
    lest the daughters of the uncircumcised rejoice.^(D)

²⁶ Put on sackcloth,^(A) my people,
    and roll in ashes;^(B)
mourn with bitter wailing^(C)
    as for an only son,^(D)
for suddenly the destroyer^(E)
    will come upon us.

¹³ Therefore the prudent keep quiet^(A) in such times,
    for the times are evil.^(B)

²⁹ Let him bury his face in the dust^(A)—
    there may yet be hope.^(B)
