Awit tungkol sa Kasaysayan ng Israel
Isang Maskil[a] ni Asaf.
78 Kayo ngayon ay makinig sa turo ko, mga anak,
inyong dinggi't ulinigin, salita kong binibigkas.
2 Itong(A) aking sasabihin ay bagay na talinghaga,
nangyari pa noong una, kaya ito'y mahiwaga.
3 Ito'y aming narinig na, kaya naman aming alam,
nagbuhat sa aming nuno na sa ami'y isinaysay.
4 Sa sarili naming anak ito'y hindi ililihim,
ito'y aming isasaysay sa sunod na lahi namin;
mga gawang tinutukoy ay lubhang kahanga-hanga
na si Yahweh ang gumanap, mga gawa niyang dakila.
5 Mayro'n siyang patotoo na kay Jacob itinatag,
mayro'n siyang kautusang sa Israel iniatas;
ang utos sa ating nuno, dapat nilang ipatupad,
ituturong lagi ito, sa kanilang mga anak.
6 Sa lahat ng lahi nila ito'y dapat na iaral,
at ang angkang susunod pa ay marapat na turuan.
7 Sa ganito, masusunod nilang lagi yaong utos,
ang matatag na pag-asa'y ilalagak nila sa Diyos,
at ang dakila niyang gawa'y hindi nila malilimot.
8 Sa kanilang mga nuno, hindi dapat na pumaris,
na matigas ang damdaming sa Diyos ay naghimagsik;
isang lahing di marunong magtiwala at magtiis,
ang pag-asa ay marupok at kulang ang pananalig.
9 Tulad ng Efraimita, mga pana ang sandata,
sa panahon ng labana'y nagsitakas pa rin sila.
10 Ang tipan sa Panginoo'y hindi nila sinusunod,
hindi sila lumalakad nang ayon sa mga utos.
11 Nakalimutan na nila ang lahat ng kabutihan,
mga gawa ng ating Diyos na kanilang hinangaan.
12 Ang(B) (C) lahat ng gawang ito, noong una'y nasaksihan,
ang nangyari sa Egipto, sa lupain nitong Zoan,
13 hinawi(D) niya yaong dagat, doon sila pinaraan,
ang tubig sa magkabila'y parang pader kung pagmasdan.
14 Kapag(E) araw, sa paglakad naging gabay nila'y ulap,
at kung gabi naman, tanglaw ay apoy na maliwanag.
15 May(F) tubig na iniinom kahit sila nasa ilang,
sa batuha'y umaagos na likas sa kalaliman.
16 Mula roon sa batuhan, ang tubig ay umaagos,
daloy nito kung pagmasdan, katulad ay isang ilog.
17 Ngunit sila'y patuloy rin sa kanilang kasalanan,
sinusuway nila ang Diyos habang sila'y nasa ilang.
18 Sadya(G) nilang sinusubok, ginagalit nila ang Diyos;
ang hiningi ay pagkaing gustung-gusto nilang lubos.
19 Kinalaban nila ang Diyos nang sabihin ang ganito:
“Sa gitna ba nitong ilang mabubusog niya tayo?
20 Nang hampasin yaong bato, oo't tubig ay bumukal,
dumaloy ang mga batis, tubig doon ay umapaw;
ngunit ito yaong tanong, tayo kaya'y mabibigyan
ng tinapay na masarap at ng karneng kailangan?”
21 Nang marinig ang ganito, si Yahweh nama'y nag-init,
sa hinirang niyang bansa'y nag-apoy ang kanyang galit.
22 Pagkat sila ay ayaw nang sa Diyos ay magtiwala,
sa pangakong pagliligtas ay ayaw nang maniwala.
23 Gayon pa man, itong Diyos nag-utos sa kalangitan,
at ang mga pinto nito'y agad-agad na nabuksan.
24 Bunga(H) nito, ang pagkai'y bumuhos na parang ulan,
ang pagkain nilang manna, sa kanila'y ibinigay.
25 Ang kaloob na pagkai'y pagkain ng mga anghel,
hindi sila nagkukulang, masagana kung dumating.
26 Yaong ihip ng amihan, ay siya rin ang nag-utos,
sa taglay na lakas niya'y dumating ang hanging timog.
27 Ang pagkain nilang karne'y masaganang dumarating,
makapal na mga ibon na sindami ng buhangin.
28 Sa gitna ng kampo nila ay doon na bumabagsak,
sa palibot ng tolda ay doon nila kinakalap.
29 Kinakain nila ito, nasisiyahan silang lahat,
binibigyan sila ng Diyos ng pagkaing hinahangad.
30 Ngunit habang kinakain ang pagkaing idinulot,
at hindi pa tumitigil pagkat di pa nabubusog,
31 pagkagalit sa nangyari, ipinakita ng Diyos,
sa kanilang kabataan, parusa niya'y ibinuhos;
ang mga malalakas at mga magagaling, buhay nila'y tinapos.
32 Sa ganitong gawa ng Diyos, sunud-sunod na himala,
ganti nila ay paglabag, hindi pa rin naniwala.
33 Kaya't yaong pasya ng Diyos, ang araw ay wakasan na,
bigla-biglang paratingin sa kanila ang parusa.
34 Subalit noong sila ay lilipulin na ng Diyos,
nagsisi ang karamiha't sa kanya'y nagbalik-loob.
35 Noon nila nagunitang ang sanggalang nila'y ang Diyos,
ang Kataas-taasang Diyos ay kanilang Manunubos.
36 Kaya't siya ay pinuri, ng papuring hindi tapat,
pagkat yao'y pakunwari't balatkayong matatawag.
37 Sa(I) kanilang mga puso, naghahari'y kataksilan,
hindi sila naging tapat sa ginawa niyang tipan.
38 Gayon pa man, palibhasa'y Diyos siyang mahabagin,
ang masamang gawa nila'y kanyang pinatawad pa rin;
dahilan sa pag-ibig niya'y hindi sila wawasakin,
kung siya ma'y nagagalit, ito'y kanyang pinipigil.
39 Nagunita pa ni Yahweh, sila'y mga tao lamang,
hanging di na nagbabalik matapos na makaraan.
40 Madalas na nag-aalsa noong sila'y nasa ilang;
ang ganitong gawa nila'y labis niyang dinaramdam.
41 Lagi siyang sinusubok, hindi sila tumitigil,
ginagalit nilang lagi itong Banal na Diyos ng Israel.
42 Ang kapangyarihan niya'y ayaw nilang gunitain,
gayong sila'y iniligtas sa kaaway nilang taksil.
43 Ang ginawa nitong Diyos na lubos na hinangaan,
ay nangyari sa Egipto sa lupain nitong Zoan.
44 Yaong(J) mga ilog doo'y naging dugong umaagos,
kaya walang makainom sa batis at mga ilog.
45 Makapal(K) na mga langaw at palaka ang dumating,
nataranta silang lahat, di malaman ang gagawin.
46 Dumating(L) ang maninira sa taniman ng halaman,
mga tanim ay kinain ng balang na di mabilang.
47 Pati(M) tanim na ubasa'y winasak ng ulang yelo,
anupa't sa kalamiga'y namatay ang sikamoro.
48 Nang ulanin na ng yelo, mga baka ay namatay,
sa talim ng mga kidlat namatay ang mga kawan.
49 Sa ganito ay nadama ang matinding poot ng Diyos,
kaya sila ay winasak sa sama ng kanyang loob,
mga anghel ang gumanap ng parusang sunud-sunod.
50 Ang matinding galit ng Diyos hindi niya pinigilan,
yaong naging wakas nila'y humantong sa kamatayan;
dahilan sa isang salot, buhay nila ay pumanaw.
51 Yaong(N) lahat na panganay sa Egipto ay pinatay,
ang panganay na lalaki sa Egiptong lahi ni Ham.
52 Tinipon(O) ang kanyang hirang na animo'y mga tupa,
inakay sa lupaing ilang sa kanyang pangunguna.
53 Inakay(P) nga at naligtas, kaya naman di natakot,
samantalang ang kanilang kaaway ay nangalunod.
54 Inihatid(Q) sila ng Diyos sa lupain niyang banal,
sa bundok na mismong siya ang kumuha sa kaaway.
55 Itinaboy(R) niyang lahat ang naroong namamayan,
pinaghati-hati niya ang lupaing naiwanan;
sa kanilang mga tolda ang Israel ay nanahan.
56 Ngunit(S) sila'y naghimagsik sa Kataas-taasang Diyos,
hindi nila iginalang ang kanyang mga utos;
57 katulad ng nuno nila sila'y kusang tumalikod,
nagtaksil na wari'y panang lumipad nang walang taros.
58 Nanibugho itong Diyos, sa kanila ay nagalit,
nang makita ang dambana ng larawang iniukit.
59 Sumamâ ang loob niya noong ito ay mamasid,
itinakwil ang Israel sa tindi ng kanyang galit.
60 Kaya't(T) kanyang iniwanan ang tahanang nasa Shilo,
yaong toldang tirahan niya sa gitna ng mga tao.
61 Sagisag(U) ng kanyang lakas, ang Kaban ng kanyang Tipan,
binayaan na mahulog at makuha ng kaaway.
62 Nagalit sa kanyang baya't ibinigay sa kaaway,
kaya naman ang marami sa kanila ay namatay.
63 Kanilang mga binata ay nasawi sa labanan,
dalaga mang magaganda'y wala nang mapangasawa.
64 Pati mga pari nila, sa patalim ay napuksa,
ang kanilang mga balo'y ni ayaw nang magluksa.
65 Parang tulog na gumising, si Yahweh ay nagbangon, ang katawan ay masigla, tumayo ang Panginoon;
parang taong nagpainit sa alak na iniinom.
66 Pinaurong ang kaaway, lahat niyang katunggali,
napahiya silang lahat, pawang galit na umuwi.
67 Maging ang lahi ni Jose, sadya niyang itinakwil,
at di niya pinagbigyan pati lahi ni Efraim.
68 Sa halip, pinili niya'y ang sambahayan ni Juda,
at ang bundok naman ng Zion ang tirahang minahal niya.
69 Doon niya itinayo yaong banal na santuwaryo,
katulad ng nasa langit na tahanan niyang dako;
lubos niyang pinatatag na tulad ng mundong ito.
70 Ang(V) kinuhang pangunahi'y sa mahirap pa hinugot,
isang pastol ang napili, si David na kanyang lingkod.
71 Ang alagang dati nito ay kawan ng mga hayop,
nang maghari sa Israel, nanguna sa bayan ng Diyos.
72 Matuwid na namahala, namalakad na mahusay,
lubos silang kinalinga sa tulong niya at patnubay.

Psalm 78

Asaph wrote this special song.
God has been good to his people[a]
78 My people, listen to what I am teaching you.
Listen to the words that I speak.
2 I will tell you something to make you wise.
Then you will understand
things that happened long ago.
3 We have heard about these things
and we know them.
Our ancestors have told them to us,
4 and we will not hide them from our children.
We will tell our children and our grandchildren
why they should praise the Lord.
We will tell them about his strength,
and about the great things that he has done.
5 He gave his laws to Jacob's descendants,
the Israelite people.
He commanded our ancestors
to teach them to their children.
6 Then the children would know about them,
even the children still to be born.
When the time came,
they too would tell their children.
7 Then their family would trust in God.
They would not forget what God had done.
They would obey his commands.
8 So they would not be like their ancestors,
who turned against God.
Those people refused to obey God,
and they did not trust him to be their guide.
9 The soldiers of Ephraim had bows and arrows,
but they ran away when the battle started![b]
10 They did not obey the covenant
that God had made with them.
They refused to obey his laws.
11 They forgot about what he had done for them.
They forgot the miracles that he had shown them.
12 He did miracles for their ancestors to see,
in the region of Egypt that is called Zoan.
13 He cut the sea into two separate parts,
and he led them through it.
He made a path between two walls of water.[c]
14 He showed them the way with a cloud in the day
and with light from a fire all night.[d]
15 He broke rocks into pieces in the wilderness
so that his people had plenty of water.
Springs of water came from deep in the earth.
16 He caused streams to pour from the rocks
so that the waters ran like rivers.[e]
17 But his people continued to do bad things against him.
In the wilderness,
they turned against the Most High God.
18 They decided to test God,
to see what he would do.
They demanded to have the food that they liked best.
19 They spoke against God, and they said,
‘Can God give us food to eat here in the wilderness?
20 Yes, water did come out when he hit the rock.
There were streams of water that poured out like a river.
But can he also give us food to eat?
Can he supply meat for his people?’
21 When the Lord heard this,
he was very angry.
So he sent fire to punish his people.
He became very angry against the Israelites.
22 They did not trust God,
that he had the power to save them.
23 So God commanded the clouds high above
to give food to his people.
He caused the skies to open like a door.
24 He poured down manna like rain,
so that they could eat grain that came from heaven.[f]
25 In that way, people ate the special bread of angels!
God gave them all the food that they could eat.
26 Then God caused a wind to blow from the east.
He used his power to send a south wind too.
27 He caused meat to pour down on them,
like dust from the sky.
The birds covered all the ground
like sand on the shore of the sea.[g]
28 God made the birds fall near the tents
where his people were living.
29 They ate as much as they could eat.
Yes, God gave them what they had demanded!
30-31 But God became very angry with them,
even before they had finished eating.
While the food was still in their mouths,
he killed the strongest men among them.
Many of the best young Israelite men died.
32 Even when this happened,
the people continued to do bad things.
When God had done these miracles,
they still did not trust him to help them.
33 So he made their lives end quickly, like a breath.
They became very afraid.
34 When God killed some of them,
the other people turned to God.
They were sorry and they prayed to him.
35 They remembered that God
was their strong Rock.
They remembered that the Most High God
was their Redeemer.
36 But they deceived him with their words.
What they said to him was lies.
37 They did not really trust him.
They did not obey the covenant
that he had made with them.
38 But God was kind to them,
and he forgave them for their sins.
He did not destroy them.
Many times he was patient,
and he did not become angry with them.
39 He remembered that they were weak and human,
like a wind that blows away and does not return.
40 When the Israelite people were in the wilderness,
they often turned against God.
That caused God to be very sad.
41 Many times they tested God, the Holy One of Israel,
so that he was very upset.
42 They forgot about his great power,
and how he rescued them from their enemies.
43 He did powerful miracles in Egypt,
in the region of Zoan.
44 He caused the Egyptians' rivers to become blood,
so that they could not drink water from them.[h]
45 He sent large numbers of flies to bite them.[i]
He sent frogs that destroyed their land.[j]
46 He caused locusts to eat their crops,
and everything that grew in their fields.[k]
47 He destroyed their vines with hail.
He destroyed their fig trees with frost.
48 He sent hail to kill their cows.
He sent lightning to kill their other animals.[l]
49 He was so angry with them,
that he sent terrible things to punish them.
Great trouble came to them,
like an army of his angels that bring death.
50 Nothing could stop his anger.
He did not save them from death.
He let bad disease kill them.
51 He killed all the firstborn sons in Egypt.
The strongest men of Ham's descendants died.[m]
52 But God led his own people safely out of Egypt.
But took them through the wilderness,
like a shepherd leads his sheep.[n]
53 They were safe with him as their guide,
and they were not afraid.
But their enemies drowned in the sea.[o]
54 He brought his people to the edge of his holy land.
It was land with the mountain
that he had taken with his power.[p]
55 He chased away the nations that were living there.
He gave to each tribe their own piece of land,
so that Israel's tribes could live there.[q]
56 But the Israelites continued to test the Most High God,
and they turned against him.
They did not obey his commands.[r]
57 They turned away from him and they deceived him,
as their ancestors had done.
They were useless,
like a bow that would not shoot straight!
58 The places where they worshipped their idols
made God very angry.
59 God heard what they were doing,
and he became very angry.
He turned against the Israelite people.
60 He went away from his home at Shiloh.
That was the tent where he lived among people.[s]
61 He let Israel's enemies take away the Covenant Box,
that showed his power and his glory.[t]
62 He was so angry with his own people,
he let their enemies kill them in battle.
63 Fire killed their young men in war.
There was nobody for the young women to marry.
64 Their priests died in battle.
Their widows had no chance to weep.
65 Then the Lord woke up,
like someone had woken him from sleep.
He shouted loudly,
like a soldier who has drunk a lot of wine.
66 He chased his enemies away.
He caused them to be ashamed for ever.
67 He chose not to live among Joseph's descendants.
He did not choose the tribe of Ephraim.
68 Instead, he chose the tribe of Judah.
He chose Mount Zion,
the place which he loves.
69 There he built a temple for himself,
to be like his home in heaven.
He made it to be strong, like the earth itself,
so that it would always be there.
70 Also, he chose his servant, David.
He took David away from the fields,
71 so that he no longer took care of his father's sheep.
He became like a shepherd,
to lead his people, Jacob's descendants.
He ruled the people that belonged to God,
the Israelite people.[u]
72 David took care of them with an honest heart.
He was wise in the way that he led them.
