El Sermón del monte: Las bienaventuranzas
(Lc. 6.20-23)
5 Viendo la multitud, subió al monte; y sentándose, vinieron a él sus discípulos. 2 Y abriendo su boca les enseñaba, diciendo:
3 Bienaventurados los pobres en espíritu, porque de ellos es el reino de los cielos.
4 Bienaventurados los que lloran,(A) porque ellos recibirán consolación.
5 Bienaventurados los mansos,(B) porque ellos recibirán la tierra por heredad.
6 Bienaventurados los que tienen hambre y sed(C) de justicia, porque ellos serán saciados.
7 Bienaventurados los misericordiosos, porque ellos alcanzarán misericordia.
8 Bienaventurados los de limpio corazón,(D) porque ellos verán a Dios.
9 Bienaventurados los pacificadores, porque ellos serán llamados hijos de Dios.
10 Bienaventurados los que padecen persecución por causa de la justicia,(E) porque de ellos es el reino de los cielos.
11 Bienaventurados sois cuando por mi causa os vituperen y os persigan, y digan toda clase de mal contra vosotros, mintiendo.(F) 12 Gozaos y alegraos, porque vuestro galardón es grande en los cielos; porque así persiguieron a los profetas(G) que fueron antes de vosotros.
La sal de la tierra
13 Vosotros sois la sal de la tierra; pero si la sal se desvaneciere, ¿con qué será salada? No sirve más para nada, sino para ser echada fuera y hollada por los hombres.(H)
La luz del mundo
14 Vosotros sois la luz del mundo;(I) una ciudad asentada sobre un monte no se puede esconder. 15 Ni se enciende una luz y se pone debajo de un almud, sino sobre el candelero,(J) y alumbra a todos los que están en casa. 16 Así alumbre vuestra luz delante de los hombres, para que vean vuestras buenas obras, y glorifiquen a vuestro Padre que está en los cielos.(K)
Jesús y la ley
17 No penséis que he venido para abrogar la ley o los profetas; no he venido para abrogar, sino para cumplir. 18 Porque de cierto os digo que hasta que pasen el cielo y la tierra, ni una jota ni una tilde pasará de la ley, hasta que todo se haya cumplido.(L) 19 De manera que cualquiera que quebrante uno de estos mandamientos muy pequeños, y así enseñe a los hombres, muy pequeño será llamado en el reino de los cielos; mas cualquiera que los haga y los enseñe, este será llamado grande en el reino de los cielos. 20 Porque os digo que si vuestra justicia no fuere mayor que la de los escribas y fariseos, no entraréis en el reino de los cielos.
Jesús y la ira

21 Oísteis que fue dicho a los antiguos: No matarás;(M) y cualquiera que matare será culpable de juicio. 22 Pero yo os digo que cualquiera que se enoje contra su hermano, será culpable de juicio; y cualquiera que diga: Necio, a su hermano, será culpable ante el concilio; y cualquiera que le diga: Fatuo, quedará expuesto al infierno de fuego. 23 Por tanto, si traes tu ofrenda al altar, y allí te acuerdas de que tu hermano tiene algo contra ti, 24 deja allí tu ofrenda delante del altar, y anda, reconcíliate primero con tu hermano, y entonces ven y presenta tu ofrenda. 25 Ponte de acuerdo con tu adversario pronto, entre tanto que estás con él en el camino, no sea que el adversario te entregue al juez, y el juez al alguacil, y seas echado en la cárcel. 26 De cierto te digo que no saldrás de allí, hasta que pagues el último cuadrante.
Jesús y el adulterio
27 Oísteis que fue dicho: No cometerás adulterio.(N) 28 Pero yo os digo que cualquiera que mira a una mujer para codiciarla, ya adulteró con ella en su corazón. 29 Por tanto, si tu ojo derecho te es ocasión de caer, sácalo, y échalo de ti; pues mejor te es que se pierda uno de tus miembros, y no que todo tu cuerpo sea echado al infierno.(O) 30 Y si tu mano derecha te es ocasión de caer, córtala, y échala de ti; pues mejor te es que se pierda uno de tus miembros, y no que todo tu cuerpo sea echado al infierno.(P)
Jesús y el divorcio
31 También fue dicho: Cualquiera que repudie a su mujer, dele carta de divorcio.(Q) 32 Pero yo os digo que el que repudia a su mujer, a no ser por causa de fornicación, hace que ella adultere; y el que se casa con la repudiada, comete adulterio.(R)
Jesús y los juramentos
33 Además habéis oído que fue dicho a los antiguos: No perjurarás,(S) sino cumplirás al Señor tus juramentos.(T) 34 Pero yo os digo: No juréis en ninguna manera;(U) ni por el cielo, porque es el trono de Dios;(V) 35 ni por la tierra, porque es el estrado de sus pies;(W) ni por Jerusalén, porque es la ciudad del gran Rey.(X) 36 Ni por tu cabeza jurarás, porque no puedes hacer blanco o negro un solo cabello. 37 Pero sea vuestro hablar: Sí, sí; no, no; porque lo que es más de esto, de mal procede.
El amor hacia los enemigos

38 Oísteis que fue dicho: Ojo por ojo, y diente por diente.(Y) 39 Pero yo os digo: No resistáis al que es malo; antes, a cualquiera que te hiera en la mejilla derecha, vuélvele también la otra; 40 y al que quiera ponerte a pleito y quitarte la túnica, déjale también la capa; 41 y a cualquiera que te obligue a llevar carga por una milla, ve con él dos. 42 Al que te pida, dale; y al que quiera tomar de ti prestado, no se lo rehúses.
43 Oísteis que fue dicho: Amarás a tu prójimo,(Z) y aborrecerás a tu enemigo. 44 Pero yo os digo: Amad a vuestros enemigos, bendecid a los que os maldicen, haced bien a los que os aborrecen, y orad por los que os ultrajan y os persiguen; 45 para que seáis hijos de vuestro Padre que está en los cielos, que hace salir su sol sobre malos y buenos, y que hace llover sobre justos e injustos. 46 Porque si amáis a los que os aman, ¿qué recompensa tendréis? ¿No hacen también lo mismo los publicanos? 47 Y si saludáis a vuestros hermanos solamente, ¿qué hacéis de más? ¿No hacen también así los gentiles? 48 Sed, pues, vosotros perfectos, como vuestro Padre que está en los cielos es perfecto.(AA)

Bendiciones

pues ellos forman parte de su reino.
4 Dios bendice a los que sufren,
pues él los consolará.
5 Dios bendice a los humildes,
pues ellos recibirán la tierra prometida.
6 Dios bendice a los que desean la justicia,
pues él les cumplirá su deseo.
7 Dios bendice a los que son compasivos,
pues él será compasivo con ellos.
8 Dios bendice a los que tienen
un corazón puro,
pues ellos verán a Dios.
9 Dios bendice a los que trabajan
para que haya paz en el mundo,

11-12 »Dios los bendecirá a ustedes cuando, por causa mía, la gente los maltrate y diga mentiras contra ustedes. ¡Alégrense! ¡Pónganse contentos! Porque van a recibir un gran premio en el cielo. Así maltrataron también a los profetas que vivieron antes que ustedes.
La sal y la luz del mundo
13 »Ustedes son como la sal que se pone en el horno de barro para aumentar su calor. Si la sal pierde esa capacidad, ya no sirve para nada, sino para que la tiren a la calle y la gente la pisotee.[b]
14 »Ustedes son como una luz que ilumina a todos. Son como una ciudad construida en la parte más alta de un cerro y que todos pueden ver. 15 Nadie enciende una lámpara para meterla debajo de un cajón. Todo lo contrario: la pone en un lugar alto para que alumbre a todos los que están en la casa. 16 De la misma manera, la conducta de ustedes debe ser como una luz que ilumine y muestre cómo se obedece a Dios. Hagan buenas acciones. Así los demás las verán y alabarán a Dios, el Padre de ustedes que está en el cielo.
La ley y los profetas
17 »No crean que vine a quitar la ley ni a decir que la enseñanza de los profetas ya no vale. Al contrario: vine a darles su verdadero valor. 18 Yo les aseguro que mientras existan el cielo y la tierra, ni siquiera un punto o una coma se quitará de la ley, hasta que todo se cumpla. 19 Por eso, si alguien no obedece uno solo de los mandatos de Dios, aun el menos importante, será la persona menos importante en el reino de Dios. Lo mismo le sucederá al que enseñe a otros a desobedecer. Pero el que obedezca los mandamientos y enseñe a otros a obedecerlos, será muy importante en el reino de Dios. 20 Yo les aseguro que si ustedes no son más obedientes que los fariseos y los maestros de la Ley, nunca entrarán en el reino de Dios.
El enojo
21 »Recuerden que hace mucho tiempo Moisés dijo: “No maten, pues si alguien mata a otro, será castigado”. 22 Pero ahora yo les aseguro que cualquiera que se enoje con otro tendrá que ir a juicio. Cualquiera que insulte a otro será llevado a los tribunales. Y el que maldiga a otro será echado en el fuego del infierno.
23 »Por eso, si llevas al altar del templo una ofrenda para Dios, y allí te acuerdas de que alguien está enojado contigo, 24 deja la ofrenda delante del altar, ve de inmediato a reconciliarte con esa persona, y después de eso regresa a presentar tu ofrenda a Dios.
25 »Si alguien te acusa de haberle hecho algo malo, arregla el problema con esa persona antes de que te entregue al juez. Si no, el juez le ordenará a un policía que te lleve a la cárcel. 26 Te aseguro que no saldrás de allí sin que antes pagues hasta la última moneda que debas.
El matrimonio
27 »Moisés también dijo: “No sean infieles en su matrimonio”. 28 Pero ahora yo les aseguro que si un hombre mira a otra mujer con el deseo de tener relaciones sexuales con ella, ya fue infiel en su corazón.
29 »Si lo que ves con tu ojo derecho te hace desobedecer a Dios, es mejor que te lo saques y lo tires lejos. Es preferible que pierdas una parte del cuerpo y no que todo tu cuerpo sea arrojado al infierno. 30 Si lo que haces con tu mano derecha te hace desobedecer, es mejor que te la cortes y la tires lejos. Es preferible que pierdas una parte de tu cuerpo y no que todo tu cuerpo se vaya al infierno.
El divorcio
31 »También hace mucho tiempo Moisés dijo: “Si alguno ya no quiere vivir casado con su mujer, déle un certificado de divorcio”. 32 Pero ahora yo les digo que el hombre sólo puede divorciarse si su esposa tiene relaciones sexuales con otro hombre. Si se divorcia de su esposa por otra razón, la pone en peligro de cometer ese mismo pecado. Si esa mujer vuelve a casarse, tanto ella como su nuevo esposo serán culpables de adulterio.
Las promesas
33 »En ese mismo tiempo, Moisés también enseñó: “No usen el nombre de Dios para prometer lo que no van a cumplir”. 34 Pero ahora yo les digo a ustedes que, cuando prometan algo, no hagan ningún juramento. No juren por el cielo, porque es el trono de Dios, 35 ni juren por la tierra, porque Dios gobierna sobre ella. Tampoco juren por Jerusalén, pues esta ciudad pertenece a Dios, el gran Rey. 36 Nunca juren por su vida, porque ustedes no son dueños de ella. 37 Si van a hacer algo digan que sí, y si no lo van a hacer digan que no. Todo lo que digan de más viene del diablo.
La venganza
38 »Otra de las enseñanzas de Moisés fue ésta: “Si alguien le saca un ojo a otro, también a él se le sacará un ojo; si le rompe un diente, también a él se le romperá otro.” 39 Pero ahora yo les digo: “No traten de vengarse de quien les hace daño. Si alguien les da una bofetada en la mejilla derecha, pídanle que les pegue también en la izquierda. 40 Si alguien los acusa ante un juez y quiere quitarles la camisa, denle también el abrigo. 41 Si un soldado los obliga a llevar una carga por un kilómetro, llévenla dos kilómetros. 42 A quien les pida algo, dénselo, y a quien les pida prestado, préstenle.”
Amar a los enemigos
43 »Ésta es otra orden que dio Moisés hace muchísimo tiempo: “Amen a su prójimo y odien a su enemigo”. 44 Pero ahora yo les digo: Amen a sus enemigos y oren por quienes los maltratan. 45 Así demostrarán que actúan como su Padre Dios, que está en el cielo. Él es quien hace que salga el sol sobre los buenos y sobre los malos. Él es quien manda la lluvia para el bien de los que lo obedecen y de los que no lo obedecen.
46 »Si ustedes aman sólo a quienes los aman, Dios no los va a bendecir por eso. Recuerden que hasta los que cobran impuestos para Roma también aman a sus amigos. 47 Si saludan sólo a sus amigos, no hacen nada extraordinario. ¡Hasta los que no creen en Dios hacen eso!
48 »Ustedes deben ser perfectos como Dios, su Padre que está en el cielo,[c] es perfecto.

Happy people
3 “Happy are people who are hopeless, because the kingdom of heaven is theirs.
4 “Happy are people who grieve, because they will be made glad.
5 “Happy are people who are humble, because they will inherit the earth.
6 “Happy are people who are hungry and thirsty for righteousness, because they will be fed until they are full.
7 “Happy are people who show mercy, because they will receive mercy.
8 “Happy are people who have pure hearts, because they will see God.
9 “Happy are people who make peace, because they will be called God’s children.
10 “Happy are people whose lives are harassed because they are righteous, because the kingdom of heaven is theirs.
11 “Happy are you when people insult you and harass you and speak all kinds of bad and false things about you, all because of me. 12 Be full of joy and be glad, because you have a great reward in heaven. In the same way, people harassed the prophets who came before you.
Salt and light
13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its saltiness, how will it become salty again? It’s good for nothing except to be thrown away and trampled under people’s feet. 14 You are the light of the world. A city on top of a hill can’t be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket. Instead, they put it on top of a lampstand, and it shines on all who are in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before people, so they can see the good things you do and praise your Father who is in heaven.
Jesus and the Law
17 “Don’t even begin to think that I have come to do away with the Law and the Prophets. I haven’t come to do away with them but to fulfill them. 18 I say to you very seriously that as long as heaven and earth exist, neither the smallest letter nor even the smallest stroke of a pen will be erased from the Law until everything there becomes a reality. 19 Therefore, whoever ignores one of the least of these commands and teaches others to do the same will be called the lowest in the kingdom of heaven. But whoever keeps these commands and teaches people to keep them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 I say to you that unless your righteousness is greater than the righteousness of the legal experts and the Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
Law of murder
21 “You have heard that it was said to those who lived long ago, Don’t commit murder,[a] and all who commit murder will be in danger of judgment. 22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with their brother or sister will be in danger of judgment. If they say to their brother or sister, ‘You idiot,’ they will be in danger of being condemned by the governing council. And if they say, ‘You fool,’ they will be in danger of fiery hell. 23 Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, 24 leave your gift at the altar and go. First make things right with your brother or sister and then come back and offer your gift. 25 Be sure to make friends quickly with your opponents while you are with them on the way to court. Otherwise, they will haul you before the judge, the judge will turn you over to the officer of the court, and you will be thrown into prison. 26 I say to you in all seriousness that you won’t get out of there until you’ve paid the very last penny.
Law of adultery
27 “You have heard that it was said, Don’t commit adultery.[b] 28 But I say to you that every man who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery in his heart. 29 And if your right eye causes you to fall into sin, tear it out and throw it away. It’s better that you lose a part of your body than that your whole body be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to fall into sin, chop it off and throw it away. It’s better that you lose a part of your body than that your whole body go into hell.
Law of divorce
31 “It was said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife must give her a divorce certificate.’[c] 32 But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife except for sexual unfaithfulness forces her to commit adultery. And whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
Law of solemn pledges
33 “Again you have heard that it was said to those who lived long ago: Don’t make a false solemn pledge, but you should follow through on what you have pledged to the Lord.[d] 34 But I say to you that you must not pledge at all. You must not pledge by heaven, because it’s God’s throne. 35 You must not pledge by the earth, because it’s God’s footstool. You must not pledge by Jerusalem, because it’s the city of the great king. 36 And you must not pledge by your head, because you can’t turn one hair white or black. 37 Let your yes mean yes, and your no mean no. Anything more than this comes from the evil one.
Law of retaliation
38 “You have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.[e] 39 But I say to you that you must not oppose those who want to hurt you. If people slap you on your right cheek, you must turn the left cheek to them as well. 40 When they wish to haul you to court and take your shirt, let them have your coat too. 41 When they force you to go one mile, go with them two. 42 Give to those who ask, and don’t refuse those who wish to borrow from you.
Law of love
43 “You have heard that it was said, You must love your neighbor[f] and hate your enemy. 44 But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who harass you 45 so that you will be acting as children of your Father who is in heaven. He makes the sun rise on both the evil and the good and sends rain on both the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 If you love only those who love you, what reward do you have? Don’t even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing? Introduction to the Sermon on the Mount
5 Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them.
The Beatitudes(A)
He said:
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.(B)
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.(C)
5 Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.(D)
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.(E)
7 Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.(F)
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,(G)
for they will see God.(H)
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,(I)
for they will be called children of God.(J)
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,(K)

Salt and Light

The Fulfillment of the Law
17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.(W) 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.(X) 19 Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands(Y) and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.(Z)
Murder(AA)
21 “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder,[a](AB) and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ 22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry(AC) with a brother or sister[b][c] will be subject to judgment.(AD) Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’[d] is answerable to the court.(AE) And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.(AF)
23 “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.
25 “Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. 26 Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.
Adultery
27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’[e](AG) 28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.(AH) 29 If your right eye causes you to stumble,(AI) gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to stumble,(AJ) cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.
Divorce
31 “It has been said, ‘Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.’[f](AK) 32 But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.(AL)
Oaths
33 “Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath,(AM) but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.’(AN) 34 But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all:(AO) either by heaven, for it is God’s throne;(AP) 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King.(AQ) 36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. 37 All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’;(AR) anything beyond this comes from the evil one.[g](AS)
Eye for Eye
38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’[h](AT) 39 But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.(AU) 40 And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. 41 If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.(AV)
Love for Enemies
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor[i](AW) and hate your enemy.’(AX) 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,(AY) 45 that you may be children(AZ) of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.(BA) 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get?(BB) Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.(BC)
