Jesus Heals a Man Who Could Not Walk
(Mark 2.1-12; Luke 5.17-26)
9 Jesus got into a boat and crossed back over to the town where he lived.[a] 2 Some people soon brought to him a man lying on a mat because he could not walk. When Jesus saw how much faith they had, he said to the man, “My friend, don't worry! Your sins are forgiven.”
3 Some teachers of the Law of Moses said to themselves, “Jesus must think he is God!”
4 But Jesus knew what was in their minds, and he said, “Why are you thinking such evil things? 5 Is it easier for me to tell this man his sins are forgiven or to tell him to get up and walk? 6 But I will show you that the Son of Man has the right to forgive sins here on earth.” So Jesus said to the man, “Get up! Pick up your mat and go on home.” 7 The man got up and went home. 8 When the crowds saw this, they were afraid[b] and praised God for giving such authority to people.
Jesus Chooses Matthew
(Mark 2.13-17; Luke 5.27-32)
9 As Jesus was leaving, he saw a tax collector[c] named Matthew sitting at the place for paying taxes. Jesus said to him, “Follow me.” Matthew got up and went with him.
10 (A) Later, Jesus and his disciples were having dinner at Matthew's house.[d] Many tax collectors and other sinners were also there. 11 Some Pharisees asked Jesus' disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and other sinners?”
12 Jesus heard them and answered, “Healthy people don't need a doctor, but sick people do. 13 (B) Go and learn what the Scriptures mean when they say, ‘Instead of offering sacrifices to me, I want you to be merciful to others.’ I didn't come to invite good people to be my followers. I came to invite sinners.”
People Ask about Going without Eating
(Mark 2.18-22; Luke 5.33-39)
14 Some followers of John the Baptist came and asked Jesus, “Why do we and the Pharisees often go without eating,[e] while your disciples never do?”
15 Jesus answered:
The friends of a bridegroom aren't sad while he is still with them. But the time will come when he will be taken from them. Then they will go without eating.
16 No one uses a new piece of cloth to patch old clothes. The patch would shrink and tear a bigger hole.
17 No one pours new wine into old wineskins. The wine would swell and burst the old skins.[f] Then the wine would be lost, and the skins would be ruined. New wine must be put into new wineskins. Both the skins and the wine will then be safe.
A Dying Girl and a Sick Woman
(Mark 5.21-43; Luke 8.40-56)
18 While Jesus was still speaking, an official came and knelt in front of him. The man said, “My daughter has just now died! Please come and place your hand on her. Then she will live again.”
19 Jesus and his disciples got up and went with the man.
20 A woman who had been bleeding for twelve years came up behind Jesus and barely touched his clothes. 21 She had said to herself, “If I can just touch his clothes, I will be healed.”
22 Jesus turned. He saw the woman and said, “Don't worry! You are now healed because of your faith.” At that moment she was healed.
23 When Jesus went into the home of the official and saw the musicians and the crowd of mourners,[g] 24 he said, “Get out of here! The little girl isn't dead. She is just asleep.” Everyone started laughing at Jesus. 25 But after the crowd had been sent out of the house, Jesus went to the girl's bedside. He took her by the hand and helped her up.
26 News about this spread all over that part of the country.
Jesus Heals Two Blind Men
27 As Jesus was leaving that place, two blind men began following him and shouting, “Son of David,[h] have pity on us!”
28 After Jesus had gone indoors, the two blind men came up to him. He asked them, “Do you believe I can make you well?”
“Yes, Lord,” they answered.
29 Jesus touched their eyes and said, “Because of your faith, you will be healed.” 30 They were able to see, and Jesus strictly warned them not to tell anyone about him. 31 But they left and talked about him to everyone in that part of the country.
Jesus Heals a Man Who Could Not Talk
32 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, some people brought to him a man who could not talk because a demon was in him. 33 After Jesus had forced the demon out, the man started talking. The crowds were so amazed they began saying, “Nothing like this has ever happened in Israel!”
34 (C) But the Pharisees said, “The leader of the demons gives him the power to force out demons.”
Jesus Has Pity on People
35 (D) Jesus went to every town and village. He taught in their synagogues and preached the good news about God's kingdom. Jesus also healed every kind of disease and sickness. 36 (E) When he saw the crowds, he felt sorry for them. They were confused and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 (F) He said to his disciples, “A large crop is in the fields, but there are only a few workers. 38 Ask the Lord in charge of the harvest to send out workers to bring it in.”

Guérison d'un paralysé
9 Jésus monta dans une barque, traversa le lac et se rendit dans sa ville. 2 Des personnes lui amenèrent un paralysé couché sur une civière. Voyant leur foi, Jésus dit au paralysé: «Prends courage, mon enfant, tes péchés te sont pardonnés.»
3 Alors, quelques spécialistes de la loi se dirent en eux-mêmes: «Cet homme blasphème.» 4 Mais Jésus connaissait leurs pensées; il dit: «Pourquoi avez-vous de mauvaises pensées en vous-mêmes? 5 En effet, qu'est-ce qui est le plus facile à dire: ‘Tes péchés te sont pardonnés’, ou: ‘Lève-toi et marche’? 6 Afin que vous sachiez que le Fils de l'homme a sur la terre le pouvoir de pardonner les péchés, lève-toi – dit-il alors au paralysé –, prends ta civière et retourne chez toi.» 7 L’homme se leva et rentra chez lui. 8 Quand la foule vit cela, elle fut émerveillée et célébra la gloire de Dieu, qui a donné un tel pouvoir aux hommes.
Réactions face à Jésus
9 Jésus partit de là. En passant, il vit un homme assis au bureau des taxes et qui s'appelait Matthieu. Il lui dit: «Suis-moi.» Cet homme se leva et le suivit.
10 Comme Jésus était à table dans la maison, beaucoup de collecteurs d’impôts et de pécheurs[a] vinrent se mettre à table avec lui et avec ses disciples. 11 Les pharisiens virent cela et dirent à ses disciples: «Pourquoi votre maître mange-t-il avec les collecteurs d’impôts et les pécheurs?» 12 Mais Jésus, qui avait entendu, leur dit: «Ce ne sont pas les bien portants qui ont besoin de médecin, mais les malades. 13 Allez apprendre ce que signifie: Je désire la bonté, et non les sacrifices.[b] En effet, je ne suis pas venu appeler des justes, mais des pécheurs, [à changer d’attitude].»
14 Alors les disciples de Jean vinrent vers Jésus et dirent: «Pourquoi nous et les pharisiens jeûnons-nous [souvent], tandis que tes disciples ne jeûnent pas?» 15 Jésus leur répondit: «Les invités à la noce peuvent-ils être tristes tant que le marié est avec eux? Les jours viendront où le marié leur sera enlevé, et alors ils jeûneront. 16 Personne ne coud un morceau de tissu neuf sur un vieil habit, car la pièce ajoutée arrache une partie de l'habit et la déchirure devient pire. 17 On ne met pas non plus du vin nouveau dans de vieilles outres, sinon les outres éclatent, le vin coule et les outres sont perdues; mais on met le vin nouveau dans des outres neuves, et le vin et les outres se conservent.»
Guérison d’une femme et résurrection d’une fillette
18 Tandis qu'il leur adressait ces paroles, un chef arriva, se prosterna devant lui et dit: «Ma fille est morte il y a un instant; mais viens, pose ta main sur elle et elle vivra.» 19 Jésus se leva et le suivit avec ses disciples.
20 C'est alors qu'une femme qui souffrait d'hémorragies depuis 12 ans s'approcha par-derrière et toucha le bord de son vêtement, 21 car elle se disait: «Si je peux seulement toucher son vêtement, je serai guérie.» 22 Jésus se retourna et dit en la voyant: «Prends courage, ma fille, ta foi t'a sauvée.» Et cette femme fut guérie dès ce moment.
23 Lorsque Jésus fut arrivé à la maison du chef, il vit les joueurs de flûte et la foule bruyante. 24 Il leur dit: «Retirez-vous, car la jeune fille n'est pas morte, mais elle dort», et ils se moquaient de lui. 25 Quand la foule eut été renvoyée, il entra, prit la main de la jeune fille, et la jeune fille se leva. 26 Cette nouvelle se propagea dans toute la région.
Guérison de deux aveugles et d'un démoniaque
27 Quand Jésus partit de là, il fut suivi par deux aveugles qui criaient: «Aie pitié de nous, Fils de David[c]!» 28 Lorsqu'il fut arrivé à la maison, les aveugles s'approchèrent de lui et Jésus leur dit: «Croyez-vous que je puisse faire cela?» «Oui, Seigneur», lui répondirent-ils. 29 Alors il toucha leurs yeux en disant: «Soyez traités conformément à votre foi», 30 et leurs yeux s'ouvrirent. Jésus leur recommanda avec sévérité: «Faites bien attention que personne ne le sache!» 31 mais, à peine sortis, ils parlèrent de lui dans toute la région.
32 Comme ils s'en allaient, on amena à Jésus un démoniaque muet. 33 Il chassa le démon et le muet se mit à parler. La foule disait, émerveillée: «On n’a jamais rien vu de pareil en Israël», 34 mais les pharisiens disaient: «C'est par le prince des démons qu'il chasse les démons.»
Mission des douze apôtres
35 Jésus parcourait toutes les villes et les villages; il enseignait dans les synagogues, proclamait la bonne nouvelle du royaume et guérissait toute maladie et toute infirmité. 36 A la vue des foules, il fut rempli de compassion pour elles, car elles étaient blessées et abattues, comme des brebis qui n'ont pas de berger[d]. 37 Alors il dit à ses disciples: «La moisson est grande, mais il y a peu d'ouvriers. 38 Priez donc le maître de la moisson d'envoyer des ouvriers dans sa moisson.»

9 And entering into a boat, he passed over the water and came into his own city.
2 And behold they brought to him one sick of the palsy lying in a bed. And Jesus, seeing their faith, said to the man sick of the palsy: Be of good heart, son, thy sins are forgiven thee.
3 And behold some of the scribes said within themselves: He blasphemeth.
4 And Jesus seeing their thoughts, said: Why do you think evil in your hearts?
5 Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins are forgiven thee: or to say, Arise, and walk?
6 But that you may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then said he to the man sick of palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go into thy house.
7 And he arose, and went into his house.
8 And the multitude seeing it, feared, and glorified God that gave such power to men.
9 And when Jesus passed on from hence, he saw a man sitting in the custom house, named Matthew; and he saith to him: Follow me. And he rose up and followed him.
10 And it came to pass as he was sitting at meat in the house, behold many publicans and sinners came, and sat down with Jesus and his disciples.
11 And the Pharisees seeing it, said to his disciples: Why doth your master eat with publicans and sinners?
12 But Jesus hearing it, said: They that are in health need not a physician, but they that are ill.
13 Go then and learn what this meaneth, I will have mercy and not sacrifice. For I am not come to call the just, but sinners.
14 Then came to him the disciples of John, saying: Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but thy disciples do not fast?
15 And Jesus said to them: Can the children of the bridegroom mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then they shall fast.
16 And nobody putteth a piece of raw cloth unto an old garment. For it taketh away the fullness thereof from the garment, and there is made a greater rent.
17 Neither do they put new wine into old bottles. Otherwise the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish. But new wine they put into new bottles: and both are preserved.
18 As he was speaking these things unto them, behold a certain ruler came up, and adored him, saying: Lord, my daughter is even now dead; but come, lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live.
19 And Jesus rising up followed him, with his disciples.
20 And behold a woman who was troubled with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment.
21 For she said within herself: If I shall touch only his garment, I shall be healed.
22 But Jesus turning and seeing her, said: Be of good heart, daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.
23 And when Jesus was come into the house of the ruler, and saw the minstrels and the multitude making a rout,
24 He said: Give place, for the girl is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn.
25 And when the multitude was put forth, he went in, and took her by the hand. And the maid arose.
26 And the fame hereof went abroad into all that country.
27 And as Jesus passed from thence, there followed him two blind men crying out and saying, Have mercy on us, O Son of David.
28 And when he was come to the house, the blind men came to him. And Jesus saith to them, Do you believe, that I can do this unto you? They say to him, Yea, Lord.
29 Then he touched their eyes, saying, According to your faith, be it done unto you.
30 And their eyes were opened, and Jesus strictly charged them, saying, See that no man know this.
31 But they going out, spread his fame abroad in all that country.
32 And when they were gone out, behold they brought him a dumb man, possessed with a devil.
33 And after the devil was cast out, the dumb man spoke, and the multitudes wondered, saying, Never was the like seen in Israel.
34 But the Pharisees said, By the prince of devils he casteth out devils.
35 And Jesus went about all the cities, and towns, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease, and every infirmity.
36 And seeing the multitudes, he had compassion on them: because they were distressed, and lying like sheep that have no shepherd.
37 Then he saith to his disciples, The harvest indeed is great, but the labourers are few.
38 Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he send forth labourers into his harvest.

Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralyzed Man(A)
9 Jesus stepped into a boat, crossed over and came to his own town.(B) 2 Some men brought to him a paralyzed man,(C) lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith,(D) he said to the man, “Take heart,(E) son; your sins are forgiven.”(F)
3 At this, some of the teachers of the law said to themselves, “This fellow is blaspheming!”(G)
4 Knowing their thoughts,(H) Jesus said, “Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts? 5 Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 6 But I want you to know that the Son of Man(I) has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “Get up, take your mat and go home.” 7 Then the man got up and went home. 8 When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God,(J) who had given such authority to man.
The Calling of Matthew(K)
9 As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,”(L) he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.
10 While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples. 11 When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”(M)
12 On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 13 But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’[a](N) For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”(O)
Jesus Questioned About Fasting(P)
14 Then John’s(Q) disciples came and asked him, “How is it that we and the Pharisees fast often,(R) but your disciples do not fast?”
15 Jesus answered, “How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them?(S) The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.(T)
16 “No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse. 17 Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.”
Jesus Raises a Dead Girl and Heals a Sick Woman(U)
18 While he was saying this, a synagogue leader came and knelt before him(V) and said, “My daughter has just died. But come and put your hand on her,(W) and she will live.” 19 Jesus got up and went with him, and so did his disciples.
20 Just then a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak.(X) 21 She said to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.”
22 Jesus turned and saw her. “Take heart,(Y) daughter,” he said, “your faith has healed you.”(Z) And the woman was healed at that moment.(AA)
23 When Jesus entered the synagogue leader’s house and saw the noisy crowd and people playing pipes,(AB) 24 he said, “Go away. The girl is not dead(AC) but asleep.”(AD) But they laughed at him. 25 After the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took the girl by the hand, and she got up.(AE) 26 News of this spread through all that region.(AF)
Jesus Heals the Blind and the Mute
27 As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed him, calling out, “Have mercy on us, Son of David!”(AG)
28 When he had gone indoors, the blind men came to him, and he asked them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?”
“Yes, Lord,” they replied.(AH)
29 Then he touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith let it be done to you”;(AI) 30 and their sight was restored. Jesus warned them sternly, “See that no one knows about this.”(AJ) 31 But they went out and spread the news about him all over that region.(AK)
32 While they were going out, a man who was demon-possessed(AL) and could not talk(AM) was brought to Jesus. 33 And when the demon was driven out, the man who had been mute spoke. The crowd was amazed and said, “Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.”(AN)
34 But the Pharisees said, “It is by the prince of demons that he drives out demons.”(AO)
The Workers Are Few
35 Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness.(AP) 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them,(AQ) because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.(AR) 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest(AS) is plentiful but the workers are few.(AT) 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”
