Matthew 8:23-34

Wind and Waves Obey Jesus
23 As he got into the boat,(A) his disciples(B) followed him. 24 Suddenly, a violent storm arose on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves—but Jesus kept sleeping. 25 So the disciples came and woke him up, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to die!”
26 He said to them, “Why are you afraid, you of little faith?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the sea,(C) and there was a great calm.
27 The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the sea obey(D) him!”
Demons Driven Out by Jesus
28 When he had come to the other side,(E) to the region of the Gadarenes,[a] two demon-possessed men met him as they came out of the tombs. They were so violent that no one could pass that way. 29 Suddenly they shouted, “What do you have to do with us,[b] Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?” (F)
30 A long way off from them, a large herd of pigs was feeding. 31 “If you drive us out,” the demons begged him, “send us into the herd of pigs.”
32 “Go!” he told them. So when they had come out, they entered the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and perished in the water. 33 Then the men who tended them fled. They went into the city and reported everything, especially what had happened to those who were demon-possessed. 34 At that, the whole town went out to meet Jesus. When they saw him, they begged him to leave their region.(G)

Wind and Waves Obey Jesus
35 On(A) that day, when evening had come, he told them, “Let’s cross over to the other side of the sea.” 36 So they left the crowd and took him along since he was in the boat. And other boats were with him. 37 A great windstorm(B) arose, and the waves(C) were breaking over the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. 38 He was in the stern, sleeping(D) on the cushion. So they woke him up(E) and said to him, “Teacher! Don’t you care that we’re going to die?” (F)
39 He got up, rebuked(G) the wind, and said to the sea, “Silence!(H) Be still!” The wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 Then he said to them, “Why are you afraid?(I) Do you still have no faith?”
41 And they were terrified[a](J) and asked one another, “Who then is this? Even the wind and the sea obey(K) him!” (L)

Demons Driven Out by Jesus
5 They(A) came to the other side of the sea, to the region of the Gerasenes.[a] 2 As soon as he got out of the boat, a man with an unclean(B) spirit(C) came out of the tombs(D) and met him. 3 He lived in the tombs,(E) and no one was able to restrain him anymore—not even with a chain(F)— 4 because he often had been bound with shackles and chains, but had torn the chains apart and smashed(G) the shackles. No one was strong enough to subdue(H) him. 5 Night(I) and day among the tombs(J) and on the mountains,(K) he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones.
6 When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and knelt down before him. 7 And he cried out with a loud voice, “What do you have to do with me, Jesus, Son(L) of the Most High God?(M) I beg you before God, don’t torment(N) me!” 8 For he had told him, “Come out of the man, you unclean(O) spirit!”(P)
9 “What is your name?” he asked him.
“My name is Legion,”(Q) he answered him, “because we are many.” 10 And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the region.
11 A large herd of pigs(R) was there, feeding(S) on the hillside. 12 The demons[b] begged him, “Send us to the pigs, so that we may enter them.” 13 So he gave them permission, and the unclean(T) spirits(U) came out and entered the pigs. The herd of about two thousand rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned there.
14 The men who tended them ran off(V) and reported it in the town and the countryside, and people went to see what had happened. 15 They came to Jesus and saw the man who had been demon-possessed,(W)(X) sitting there, dressed and in his right mind;(Y) and they were afraid.(Z) 16 Those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed(AA) man and told about the pigs. 17 Then they began to beg him to leave their region.
18 As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged him earnestly that he might remain with him. 19 Jesus did not let him but told him, “Go home to your own people, and report to them how much the Lord(AB) has done(AC) for you and how he has had mercy on you.” 20 So he went out and began to proclaim(AD) in the Decapolis(AE) how much Jesus had done for him, and they were all amazed.(AF)

Wind and Waves Obey Jesus
22 One day he and his disciples got into a boat,(A) and he told them, “Let’s cross over to the other side of the lake.”(B) So they set out, 23 and as they were sailing he fell asleep. Then a fierce windstorm came down on the lake; they were being swamped and were in danger. 24 They came and woke him up, saying, “Master, Master, we’re going to die!”
Then he got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waves. So they ceased, and there was a calm.(C) 25 He said to them, “Where is your faith?”
They were fearful and amazed, asking one another, “Who then is this?(D) He commands even the winds and the waves, and they obey him!”
Demons Driven Out by Jesus
26 Then they sailed to the region of the Gerasenes,[a](E) which is opposite Galilee. 27 When he got out on land, a demon-possessed man from the town met him. For a long time he had worn no clothes and did not stay in a house but in the tombs. 28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out,(F) fell down before him, and said in a loud voice, “What do you have to do with me,(G) Jesus, Son of the Most High God?(H) I beg you, don’t torment me!” 29 For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was guarded, bound by chains and shackles, he would snap the restraints and be driven by the demon into deserted places.
30 “What is your name?” Jesus asked him.
“Legion,”(I) he said, because many demons had entered him. 31 And they begged him not to banish them to the abyss.(J)
32 A large herd of pigs was there, feeding on the hillside. The demons begged him to permit them to enter the pigs, and he gave them permission. 33 The demons came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and drowned.
34 When the men who tended them saw what had happened, they ran off and reported it in the town and in the countryside. 35 Then people went out to see what had happened. They came to Jesus and found the man the demons had departed from, sitting at Jesus’s feet,(K) dressed and in his right mind. And they were afraid. 36 Meanwhile, the eyewitnesses reported to them how the demon-possessed man was delivered.(L) 37 Then all the people of the Gerasene region[b] asked him to leave them,(M) because they were gripped by great fear. So getting into the boat, he returned.
38 The man from whom the demons had departed begged him earnestly to be with him. But he sent him away and said, 39 “Go back to your home, and tell all that God has done for you.” And off he went, proclaiming throughout the town how much Jesus had done for him.
