13 And Jesus said to the centurion, “Go; [a]it shall be done for you (A)as you have believed.” And the [b]servant was healed at that very [c]moment.

Peter’s Mother-in-law and Many Others Healed

14 (B)When Jesus came into Peter’s [d]home, He saw his mother-in-law lying sick in bed with a fever. 15 And He touched her hand, and the fever left her; and she got up and [e]waited on Him. 16 Now when evening came, they brought to Him many (C)who were demon-possessed; and He cast out the spirits with a word, and (D)healed all who were ill. 17 This happened so that what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet would be fulfilled: “(E)He Himself took our illnesses and [f]carried away our diseases.”

Discipleship Tested

18 Now when Jesus saw a crowd around Him, (F)He gave orders to depart to the other side of the sea. 19 (G)Then a scribe came and said to Him, “Teacher, I will follow You wherever You go.” 20 And Jesus *said to him, “The foxes have holes and the birds of the sky have nests, but (H)the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.” 21 And another of the disciples said to Him, “Lord, allow me first to go and bury my father.” 22 But Jesus *said to him, (I)Follow Me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”

Jesus Calms the Storm

23 (J)When He got into the boat, His disciples followed Him. 24 And behold, a [g]violent storm developed on the sea, so that the boat was being covered by the waves; but Jesus Himself was asleep. 25 And they came to Him and woke Him, saying, “(K)Save us, Lord; we are perishing!” 26 He *said to them, “Why are you [h]afraid, (L)you men of little faith?” Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and [i]it became perfectly calm. 27 The men were amazed, and said, “What kind of a man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?”

Jesus Sends Demons into Pigs

28 (M)And when He came to the other side into the country of the Gadarenes, two (N)demon-possessed men confronted Him as they were coming out of the tombs. They were so extremely violent that no one could pass by that way. 29 And they cried out, saying, “[j](O)What business do You have with us, Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before [k]the time?” 30 Now there was a herd of many pigs feeding at a distance from them. 31 And the demons begged Him, saying, “If You are going to cast us out, send us into the herd of pigs.” 32 And He said to them, “Go!” And they came out and went into the pigs; and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and [l]drowned in the waters. 33 And the herdsmen ran away, and went to the city and reported everything, [m]including what had happened to the (P)demon-possessed men. 34 And behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus; and when they saw Him, (Q)they pleaded with Him to leave their region.

A Paralyzed Man Healed

Getting into a boat, Jesus crossed over the Sea of Galilee and came to (R)His own city.

(S)And they brought to Him a (T)paralyzed man lying on a stretcher. And seeing their faith, Jesus said to the man who was paralyzed, (U)Take courage, [n]son; (V)your sins are forgiven.” And some of the scribes said [o]to themselves, “This man is (W)blaspheming!” And Jesus, (X)perceiving their thoughts, said, “Why are you thinking evil in your hearts? For which is easier, to say, ‘(Y)Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? But so that you may know that (Z)the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—then He *said to the (AA)paralyzed man, “Get up, pick up your stretcher and go home.” And he got up and [p]went home. But when the crowds saw this, they were [q]awestruck, and they (AB)glorified God, who had given such authority to men.

Matthew Called

(AC)As Jesus went on from there, He saw a man called (AD)Matthew sitting in the tax collector’s office; and He *said to him, (AE)Follow Me!” And he got up and followed Him.

10 Then it happened that as [r]Jesus was reclining at the table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and [s]sinners came and began dining with Jesus and His disciples. 11 And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to His disciples, “(AF)Why is your Teacher eating with the tax collectors and sinners?” 12 But when Jesus heard this, He said, It is not (AG)those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick. 13 Now go and learn [t](AH)what this means: ‘(AI)I desire [u]compassion, [v]rather than sacrifice,’ for (AJ)I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
