Giving to the Poor and Prayer

“Beware of doing your righteousness before men (A)to be noticed by them; otherwise you have no reward with your Father who is in heaven.

“Therefore, when you [a]give to the poor, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they (B)may be glorified by men. (C)Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. But when you [b]give to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your [c]giving will be in secret; and (D)your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.

Do Not Be Hypocrites

“Be careful that you do not do your righteous works[a] in front of people, so that they will notice. If you do, you have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. So whenever you perform acts of mercy, do not sound a trumpet for yourself, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets to be praised by people. Amen I tell you: They have received their reward. Instead, when you perform acts of mercy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. Then your acts of mercy will be in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.[b]
