Living Bible
6 “Take care! Don’t do your good deeds publicly, to be admired, for then you will lose the reward from your Father in heaven. 2 When you give a gift to a beggar, don’t shout about it as the hypocrites do—blowing trumpets in the synagogues and streets to call attention to their acts of charity! I tell you in all earnestness, they have received all the reward they will ever get. 3 But when you do a kindness to someone, do it secretly—don’t tell your left hand what your right hand is doing. 4 And your Father, who knows all secrets, will reward you.
5 “And now about prayer. When you pray, don’t be like the hypocrites who pretend piety by praying publicly on street corners and in the synagogues where everyone can see them. Truly, that is all the reward they will ever get. 6 But when you pray, go away by yourself, all alone, and shut the door behind you and pray to your Father secretly, and your Father, who knows your secrets, will reward you.
7-8 “Don’t recite the same prayer over and over as the heathen do, who think prayers are answered only by repeating them again and again. Remember, your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask him!
9 “Pray along these lines: ‘Our Father in heaven, we honor your holy name. 10 We ask that your kingdom will come now. May your will be done here on earth, just as it is in heaven. 11 Give us our food again today, as usual, 12 and forgive us our sins, just as we have forgiven those who have sinned against us. 13 Don’t bring us into temptation, but deliver us from the Evil One.[a] Amen.’ 14-15
16 “And now about fasting. When you fast, declining your food for a spiritual purpose, don’t do it publicly, as the hypocrites do, who try to look wan and disheveled so people will feel sorry for them. Truly, that is the only reward they will ever get. 17 But when you fast, put on festive clothing, 18 so that no one will suspect you are hungry, except your Father who knows every secret. And he will reward you.
19 “Don’t store up treasures here on earth where they can erode away or may be stolen. 20 Store them in heaven where they will never lose their value and are safe from thieves. 21 If your profits are in heaven, your heart will be there too.
22 “If your eye is pure, there will be sunshine in your soul. 23 But if your eye is clouded with evil thoughts and desires, you are in deep spiritual darkness. And oh, how deep that darkness can be!
24 “You cannot serve two masters: God and money. For you will hate one and love the other, or else the other way around.
25
28 “And why worry about your clothes? Look at the field lilies! They don’t worry about theirs. 29 Yet King Solomon in all his glory was not clothed as beautifully as they. 30 And if God cares so wonderfully for flowers that are here today and gone tomorrow, won’t he more surely care for you, O men of little faith?
31-32 “So don’t worry at all about having enough food and clothing. Why be like the heathen? For they take pride in all these things and are deeply concerned about them. But your heavenly Father already knows perfectly well that you need them, 33 and he will give them to you if you give him first place in your life and live as he wants you to.
34 “So don’t be anxious about tomorrow. God will take care of your tomorrow too. Live one day at a time.[b]

Charitable Giving to the Poor and Prayer
6 “Take care not to practice your righteousness in the sight of people, (A)to be noticed by them; otherwise you have no reward with your Father who is in heaven.
2 “So when you [a]give to the poor, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, so that they (B)will be praised by people. (C)Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. 3 But when you [b]give to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your charitable giving will be in secret; and (D)your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.
5 “And when you pray, you are not to be like the hypocrites; for they love to (E)stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners (F)so that they [c]will be seen by people. (G)Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. 6 But as for you, when you pray, (H)go into your inner room, close your door, and pray to your Father who is in secret; and (I)your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.
7 “And when you are praying, do not use thoughtless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard because of their (J)many words. 8 So do not be like them; for (K)your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.
The Lord’s Prayer
9 “(L)Pray, then, in this way:
‘Our Father, who is in heaven,
[d]Hallowed be Your name.
10 [e](M)Your kingdom come.
(N)Your will be done,
[f]On earth as it is in heaven.
11 (O)Give us this day [g]our daily bread.
12 And (P)forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And do not lead us into temptation, but (Q)deliver us from [h](R)evil.[i]’
14 (S)For if you forgive other people for their [j]offenses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But (T)if you do not forgive other people, then your Father will not forgive your [k]offenses.
Fasting; The True Treasure; Wealth
16 “Now (U)whenever you fast, do not make a gloomy face as the hypocrites do, for they [l]distort their faces so that they will be noticed by people when they are fasting. (V)Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. 17 But as for you, when you fast, [m](W)anoint your head and wash your face, 18 so that your fasting will not be noticed by people but by your Father who is in secret; and your (X)Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.
19 “(Y)Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves (Z)treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; 21 for (AA)where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
22 “(AB)The eye is the lamp of the body; so then, if your eye is [n]clear, your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if (AC)your eye is [o]bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. So if the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!
24 “(AD)No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and [p](AE)wealth.
The Cure for Anxiety
25 “(AF)For this reason I say to you, [q]do not be (AG)worried about your [r]life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is life not more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 (AH)Look at the birds of the sky, that they do not sow, nor reap, nor gather crops into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more important than they? 27 And which of you by (AI)worrying can (AJ)add a single [s]day to his [t]life’s span? 28 And why are you (AK)worried about clothing? Notice how the lilies of the field grow; they do not labor nor do they spin thread for cloth, 29 yet I say to you that not even (AL)Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the (AM)grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you? (AN)You of little faith! 31 Do not (AO)worry then, saying, ‘What are we to eat?’ or ‘What are we to drink?’ or ‘What are we to wear for clothing?’ 32 For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for (AP)your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But [u]seek first [v]His kingdom and His righteousness, and (AQ)all these things will be [w]provided to you.
34 “So do not (AR)worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will [x]worry about itself. [y]Each day has enough trouble of its own.

En verdad les digo que ya han recibido su recompensa(C) . 3 Pero tú, cuando des limosna, que no sepa tu mano izquierda lo que hace tu derecha, 4 para que tu limosna[b]sea en secreto; y tu Padre, que ve en lo secreto, te recompensará(D).
La oración
5 »Cuando ustedes oren, no sean como los hipócritas; porque a ellos les gusta ponerse en pie y orar en las sinagogas y en las esquinas de las calles(E) , para ser vistos por los hombres[c](F) . En verdad les digo que ya han recibido su recompensa(G) . 6 Pero tú, cuando ores, entra en tu aposento, y cuando hayas cerrado la puerta(H), ora a tu Padre que está en secreto, y tu Padre, que ve en lo secreto, te recompensará(I).
7 »Y al orar, no usen ustedes repeticiones sin sentido, como los gentiles, porque ellos se imaginan que serán oídos por su palabrería(J) . 8 Por tanto, no se hagan semejantes a ellos; porque su Padre sabe lo que ustedes necesitan antes que ustedes lo pidan(K).

9 »(L) Ustedes, pues, oren de esta manera:
“Padre nuestro que estás en los cielos,
Santificado sea Tu nombre.
10 -”Venga Tu reino(M) .
Hágase Tu voluntad(N) ,
Así en la tierra como en el cielo.
11 -”Danos hoy el pan nuestro de cada día[d](O) .

14 Porque si ustedes perdonan a los hombres sus transgresiones, también su Padre celestial les perdonará a ustedes(R) . 15 Pero si no perdonan a los hombres, tampoco su Padre les perdonará a ustedes sus transgresiones(S).
El ayuno
16 »Y cuando ayunen(T) , no pongan cara triste, como los hipócritas; porque ellos desfiguran[g] sus rostros para mostrar a los hombres que están ayunando. En verdad les digo que ya han recibido su recompensa(U) . 17 Pero tú, cuando ayunes, unge tu cabeza y lava tu rostro(V), 18 para no hacer ver[h]a los hombres que ayunas, sino a tu Padre que está en secreto; y tu Padre, que ve en lo secreto, te recompensará(W).
El verdadero tesoro
19 »No acumulen para sí tesoros en la tierra, donde la polilla y la herrumbre destruyen, y donde ladrones penetran[i] y roban(X) ; 20 sino acumulen[j]tesoros en el cielo(Y), donde ni la polilla ni la herrumbre destruyen, y donde ladrones no penetran ni roban; 21 porque donde esté tu tesoro(Z), allí estará también tu corazón.
22 »(AA) La lámpara del cuerpo es el ojo; por eso, si tu ojo está sano[k] , todo tu cuerpo estará lleno de luz. 23 Pero si tu ojo está malo(AB), todo tu cuerpo estará lleno de oscuridad. Así que, si la luz que hay en ti es oscuridad, ¡cuán grande será la oscuridad!
24 »Nadie puede servir a dos señores(AC) ; porque o aborrecerá a uno y amará al otro, o apreciará a uno y despreciará al otro. Ustedes no pueden servir a Dios y a las riquezas[l](AD) .
25 »(AE) Por eso les digo, no se preocupen por su vida(AF) , qué comerán o qué beberán; ni por su cuerpo, qué vestirán. ¿No es la vida más que el alimento y el cuerpo más que la ropa? 26 Miren las aves del cielo, que no siembran, ni siegan, ni recogen en graneros, y sin embargo, el Padre celestial[m]las alimenta(AG). ¿No son ustedes de mucho más valor que ellas? 27 ¿Quién de ustedes, por ansioso(AH)que esté, puede añadir una hora[n]al curso de su vida[o](AI)? 28 Y por la ropa, ¿por qué se preocupan(AJ)? Observen cómo crecen los lirios del campo; no trabajan, ni hilan. 29 Pero les digo que ni Salomón(AK)en toda su gloria se vistió como uno de ellos. 30 Y si Dios así viste la hierba del campo, que hoy es y mañana es echada al horno, ¿no hará Él mucho más por ustedes, hombres de poca fe(AL)?
31 »Por tanto, no se preocupen(AM) , diciendo: “¿Qué comeremos?” o “¿qué beberemos?” o “¿con qué nos vestiremos?”. 32 Porque los gentiles buscan ansiosamente todas estas cosas; el Padre celestial[p](AN)sabe que ustedes necesitan todas estas cosas. 33 Pero busquen primero Su[q]reino[r]y Su justicia, y todas estas cosas les serán añadidas[s](AO). 34 Por tanto, no se preocupen(AP)por el día de mañana; porque el día de mañana se cuidará[t]de sí mismo.
