Lay Up Treasures in Heaven

^19 (A)“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where ^(B)moth and rust^[a] destroy and where thieves ^(C)break in and steal, ^20 (D)but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. ²¹ For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

¹⁵ And he said to them, ^(A)“Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” ¹⁶ And he told them a parable, saying, ^(B)“The land of a rich man produced plentifully, ¹⁷ and he thought to himself, ^(C)‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ ¹⁸ And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my ^(D)barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. ¹⁹ And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up ^(E)for many years; relax, ^(F)eat, drink, be merry.”’ ²⁰ But God said to him, ^(G)‘Fool! ^(H)This night ^(I)your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, ^(J)whose will they be?’ ²¹ So is the one ^(K)who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”

^20 (A)Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that ^(B)your names are written in heaven.”

²¹ And he said, ^(A)“Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked shall I ^(B)return. The Lord ^(C)gave, and the Lord has taken away; ^(D)blessed be the name of the Lord.”

The Book of Remembrance

¹⁶ Then those who feared the Lord ^(A)spoke with one another. The Lord paid attention and heard them, and ^(B)a book of remembrance was written before him of those who feared the Lord and esteemed his name. ¹⁷ “They shall be mine, says the Lord of hosts, ^(C)in the day when I make up ^(D)my treasured possession, and I will spare them as a man spares his son who serves him. ¹⁸ Then once more you shall ^(E)see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between one who serves God and one who does not serve him.
