The Sermon on the Mount
5 Seeing the crowds, (A)he went up on the mountain, and when he (B)sat down, his disciples came to him.
The Beatitudes
2 And (C)he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:
3 (D)“Blessed are (E)the poor in spirit, for (F)theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 “Blessed are (G)those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
5 “Blessed are the (H)meek, for they (I)shall inherit the earth.
6 “Blessed are those who hunger and (J)thirst (K)for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
7 “Blessed are (L)the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.
8 “Blessed are (M)the pure in heart, for (N)they shall see God.
9 “Blessed are (O)the peacemakers, for (P)they shall be called (Q)sons[a] of God.
10 (R)“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for (S)theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 (T)“Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely (U)on my account. 12 (V)Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for (W)so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Salt and Light
13 “You are the salt of the earth, (X)but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet.
14 (Y)“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 (Z)Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so (AA)that[b] they may see your good works and (AB)give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Christ Came to Fulfill the Law
17 (AC)“Do not think that I have come to abolish (AD)the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but (AE)to fulfill them. 18 For truly, I say to you, (AF)until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 19 (AG)Therefore whoever relaxes (AH)one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least (AI)in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great (AJ)in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds (AK)that of the scribes and Pharisees, you (AL)will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
Anger
21 (AM)“You have heard that it was said to those of old, (AN)‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable (AO)to judgment.’ 22 But I say to you that (AP)everyone who is angry with his brother[c] will be liable (AQ)to judgment; whoever insults[d] his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to (AR)the hell[e] of fire. 23 (AS)So if (AT)you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. 25 (AU)Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison. 26 Truly, I say to you, (AV)you will never get out until you have paid the last penny.[f]
Lust
27 (AW)“You have heard that it was said, (AX)‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that (AY)everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 (AZ)If your right eye (BA)causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into (BB)hell. 30 (BC)And if your right hand (BD)causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into (BE)hell.
Divorce
31 (BF)“It was also said, (BG)‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ 32 (BH)But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and (BI)whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
Oaths
33 “Again (BJ)you have heard that it was said to those of old, (BK)‘You shall not swear falsely, but (BL)shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’ 34 But I say to you, (BM)Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for (BN)it is the throne of God, 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is (BO)the city of the great King. 36 And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. 37 Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; (BP)anything more than this comes from evil.[g]
Retaliation
38 (BQ)“You have heard that it was said, (BR)‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ 39 But I say to you, (BS)Do not resist the one who is evil. But (BT)if anyone (BU)slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. 40 And (BV)if anyone would sue you and take your tunic,[h] let him have your cloak as well. 41 And if anyone (BW)forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. 42 (BX)Give to the one who begs from you, and (BY)do not refuse the one who would borrow from you.
Love Your Enemies
43 (BZ)“You have heard that it was said, (CA)‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, (CB)Love your enemies and (CC)pray for those who persecute you, 45 (CD)so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and (CE)sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 (CF)For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers,[i] what more are you doing than others? Do not even (CG)the Gentiles do the same? 48 (CH)You therefore must be (CI)perfect, (CJ)as your heavenly Father is perfect.

5 Amikor Jézus látta, hogy milyen sokan gyűltek össze, fölment a domb oldalára. Mikor leült, a tanítványai köré gyűltek. 2 Ő pedig így kezdte őket tanítani:
3 „Milyen boldogok és áldottak,
akik felismerik, hogy szükségük van Istenre,
mert övék Isten Királysága!
4 Milyen boldogok és áldottak,
akik most gyászolnak és sírnak,
mert Isten majd megvigasztalja őket!
5 Milyen boldogok és áldottak
a szelídek és alázatosak,
mert ők fogják örökölni a földet!
6 Milyen boldogok és áldottak,
akik éheznek és szomjaznak az igazságosságra,
mert Isten megadja nekik, amire vágynak!
7 Milyen boldogok és áldottak,
akik irgalmasan bánnak másokkal,
mert Isten is irgalmasan bánik velük!

a tiszta szívűek,

11 „Boldogok és áldottak vagytok, amikor miattam üldöznek, bántanak titeket, vagy mindenféle rosszat mondanak rólatok ok nélkül. 12 Örüljetek és ujjongjatok, mert igen nagy jutalom vár rátok a Mennyben! Így üldözték azokat a prófétákat is, akik előttetek éltek.”
Só és világosság(B)
13 „Ti olyanok vagytok az emberek között, mint a só. De ha a só elveszti az ízét, hogyan lehet azt helyreállítani? Bizony, akkor már semmire sem jó, ezért az emberek kidobják és eltapossák.
14 Ti vagytok a világosság az egész világ számára. A hegy tetejére épített várost sem lehet elrejteni. 15 Ugyanígy, aki olajmécsest gyújt, nem rejti edény alá, hanem a mécstartóra teszi, hogy mindenkinek világítson, aki a házban van. 16 Így ragyogjon a világosságotok az embereknek: hadd lássák, milyen jó, amit tesztek, és dicsérjék érte Mennyei Atyátokat!”
Jézus és a Törvény
17 „Ne gondoljátok, hogy azért jöttem, hogy érvénytelenné tegyem a Mózesi Törvényt, vagy a próféták tanítását! Ellenkezőleg, azért jöttem, hogy beteljesítsem! 18 Igazán mondom nektek: amíg az Ég és a Föld létezik, a Törvényből egyetlen betű vagy pont sem veszíti el érvényességét, amíg mind be nem teljesedik.
19 Ha valaki nem tart fontosnak akár csak egyet is a Törvény parancsai közül, és nem engedelmeskedik annak, sőt, még a többieket is erre tanítja, az lesz a legkisebb Isten Királyságában. Aki viszont megtartja a Törvény parancsait, és erre tanítja a többieket is, az nagy lesz Isten Királyságában. 20 Igazán mondom nektek: ha csak annyira éltek Istennek tetsző módon, mint a törvénytanítók és a farizeusok, akkor sohasem fogtok bemenni Isten Királyságába.”
A haragról
21 „Hallottátok, hogy őseinknek megmondták: »Ne gyilkolj! Aki pedig mégis gyilkol, azt el kell ítélni.«[b] 22 Én azonban azt mondom nektek: ha valaki haragot táplál magában a másik ember ellen, azt már el kell ítélni. Ha pedig haragjában azt mondja valakinek: »Te hitvány bolond!« — azt a Főtanács fogja elítélni. Ha pedig odáig megy, hogy a másikat »istentelen hülyének« nevezi, az megérdemli, hogy az örök tüzre dobják.
23 Ezért, ha áldozati ajándékot viszel az oltárhoz, és ott eszedbe jut, hogy valakinek panasza van ellened, 24 hagyd az oltár előtt ajándékodat, menj el, és békülj ki a haragosoddal! Csak azután menj vissza az oltárhoz, hogy felajánljad áldozatodat Istennek!
25 Békülj ki hamar ellenfeleddel, amíg úton vagytok a bíróság felé. Különben ellenfeled a bíró kezébe adhat, a bíró meg a börtönőrnek, s így végül börtönbe zárnak! 26 Igazán mondom neked: ki nem jössz onnan, amíg az utolsó fillérig ki nem fizetted tartozásodat!”
A szexuális bűnökről
27 „Hallottátok, hogy megmondták: »Ne kövess el házasságtörést!«[c] 28 Én viszont azt mondom nektek: ha valaki a házasságtörés vágyával néz más feleségére, az magában már el is követte a házasságtörés bűnét. 29 Ezért, ha a jobb szemed vinne bűnbe, még azt is inkább vájd ki, és hajítsd el! Jobban jársz, ha a tested egy részét elveszíted, mint ha ép testtel dobnak a gyehennára! 30 Ha pedig a jobb kezed vinne bűnbe, még azt is vágd le, és dobd el! Jobban jársz, ha a tested egy részét elveszíted, mint ha ép testtel vetnek a gyehennára!”
A válásról(C)
31 „Ezt is mondták nektek: »Aki elválik a feleségétől, adjon neki válólevelet!«[d] 32 Én viszont azt mondom: maga hajtja a feleségét a házasságtörés bűnébe az a férfi, aki bármilyen okból — egyet kivéve — elválik a feleségétől. A kivétel pedig az, ha a feleség házasságtörést követett el. S aki az elbocsátott asszonyt feleségül veszi, az is házasságtörést követ el.”
Az esküről
33 „Hallottátok, hogy őseinknek azt mondták: »Ha megesküszöl valamire, azt ne szegd meg! Amit esküvel ígértél az Örökkévalónak, azt teljesítsd!«[e] 34 Én viszont azt mondom nektek: egyáltalán ne esküdjetek, se az Égre, mert az Isten királyi trónja, 35 se a Földre, mert az Isten lábtartója, se Jeruzsálemre, mert az a Nagy Király városa! 36 Még a saját fejedre se esküdj, mert egyetlen hajszáladat sem tudod feketévé vagy fehérré tenni! 37 Ha »igent« gondoltok, akkor mondjatok igent, ha »nemet« — akkor mondjatok nemet! Amit ezen kívül még hozzátesztek, az már a Gonosztól van.”

38 „Hallottátok, hogy megmondták: »Szemet szemért és fogat fogért!«[f] 39 Én viszont azt mondom nektek: ne üssetek vissza annak, aki kárt okoz nektek! Ha valaki arcul üt az egyik oldalról, tartsd oda neki a másik arcodat is! 40 Ha valaki el akarja perelni tőled a kabátodat, add oda neki az ingedet is! 41 Ha valaki arra kényszerít, hogy vidd a csomagját egy mérföldre, vidd el neki kettőre! 42 Ha valaki kölcsönkér tőled valamit, azt add kölcsön neki! Ha pénzt kér kölcsön, ne utasítsd el!”
Szeressétek ellenségeiteket!(E)
43 „Hallottátok, hogy megmondták: »Szeresd a honfitársaidat, de gyűlöld az ellenségeidet!«[g] 44 Én viszont azt mondom nektek: Szeressétek ellenségeiteket, és imádkozzatok azokért, akik üldöznek titeket! 45 Így valóban Mennyei Atyátok fiai lesztek. Ő ugyanis felhozza a Napot, amely az övé, hogy világítson a gonoszoknak és a jóknak is. Hasonlóképpen, esőt küld az igazságosaknak és a bűnösöknek egyaránt. 46 Ha tehát csak azokat szeretitek, akik szeretnek titeket, ugyan milyen jutalmat kaptok? Ennyit a vámszedők is megtesznek! 47 Ha csak a testvéreiteknek köszöntök, ugyan mennyivel tesztek többet, mint mások? Ezt még azok is megteszik, akik nem ismerik Istent! 48 Legyetek tehát tökéletesek, mint ahogy Mennyei Atyátok tökéletes!”

23 Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee;
24 Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.
25 Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.
26 Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.
27 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:
28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
29 And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
30 And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
31 It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:
32 But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.
33 Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths:
34 But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne:
35 Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King.
36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.
37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.
38 Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:
39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.
40 And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also.
41 And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.
42 Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.
43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.
44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.
46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?
47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?
48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.
