The Sermon on the Mount
5 When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on the side of a mountain and sat down.[a]
Blessings
(Luke 6.20-23)
Jesus' disciples gathered around him, 2 and he taught them:
3 God blesses those people
who depend only on him.
They belong to the kingdom
of heaven![b]
4 (A) God blesses those people
who grieve.
They will find comfort!
5 (B) God blesses those people
who are humble.
The earth will belong
to them!
6 (C) God blesses those people
who want to obey him[c]
more than to eat or drink.
They will be given
what they want!
7 God blesses those people
who are merciful.
They will be treated
with mercy!
8 (D) God blesses those people
whose hearts are pure.
They will see him!
9 God blesses those people
who make peace.
They will be called
his children!
10 (E) God blesses those people
who are treated badly
for doing right.
They belong to the kingdom
of heaven.[d]
11 (F) God will bless you when people insult you, mistreat you, and tell all kinds of evil lies about you because of me. 12 (G) Be happy and excited! You will have a great reward in heaven. People did these same things to the prophets who lived long ago.
Salt and Light
(Mark 9.50; Luke 14.34,35)
13 (H) You are the salt for everyone on earth. But if salt no longer tastes like salt, how can it make food salty? All it is good for is to be thrown out and walked on.
14 (I) You are the light for the whole world. A city built on top of a hill cannot be hidden, 15 (J) and no one lights a lamp and puts it under a clay pot. Instead, it is placed on a lampstand, where it can give light to everyone in the house. 16 (K) Make your light shine, so others will see the good you do and will praise your Father in heaven.
The Law of Moses
17 Don't suppose I came to do away with the Law and the Prophets.[e] I did not come to do away with them, but to give them their full meaning. 18 (L) Heaven and earth may disappear. But I promise you not even a period or comma will ever disappear from the Law. Everything written in it must happen.
19 If you reject even the least important command in the Law and teach others to do the same, you will be the least important person in the kingdom of heaven. But if you obey and teach others its commands, you will have an important place in the kingdom. 20 You must obey God's commands better than the Pharisees and the teachers of the Law obey them. If you don't, I promise you will never get into the kingdom of heaven.
Anger
21 (M) You know our ancestors were told, “Do not murder” and “A murderer must be brought to trial.” 22 But I promise you if you are angry with someone,[f] you will have to stand trial. If you call someone a fool, you will be taken to court. And if you say that someone is worthless, you will be in danger of the fires of hell.
23 So if you are about to place your gift on the altar and remember that someone is angry with you, 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. Make peace with that person, then come back and offer your gift to God.
25 Before you are dragged into court, make friends with the person who has accused you of doing wrong. If you don't, you will be handed over to the judge and then to the officer who will put you in jail. 26 I promise you will not get out until you have paid the last cent you owe.
Marriage
27 (N) You know the commandment which says, “Be faithful in marriage.” 28 But I tell you if you look at another woman and want her, you are already unfaithful in your thoughts. 29 (O) If your right eye causes you to sin, poke it out and throw it away. It is better to lose one part of your body, than for your whole body to end up in hell. 30 (P) If your right hand causes you to sin, chop it off and throw it away! It is better to lose one part of your body, than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.
Divorce
(Matthew 19.9; Mark 10.11,12; Luke 16.18)
31 (Q) You have been taught that a man who divorces his wife must write out divorce papers for her.[g] 32 (R) But I tell you not to divorce your wife unless she has committed some terrible sexual sin.[h] If you divorce her, you will cause her to be unfaithful, just as any man who marries her is guilty of taking another man's wife.
Promises
33 (S) You know our ancestors were told, “Don't use the Lord's name to make a promise unless you are going to keep it.” 34 (T) But I tell you not to swear by anything when you make a promise! Heaven is God's throne, so don't swear by heaven. 35 (U) The earth is God's footstool, so don't swear by the earth. Jerusalem is the city of the great king, so don't swear by it. 36 Don't swear by your own head. You cannot make one hair white or black. 37 When you make a promise, say only “Yes” or “No.” Anything else comes from the devil.
Revenge
(Luke 6.29,30)
38 (V) You know you have been taught, “An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.” 39 But I tell you not to try to get even with a person who has done something to you. When someone slaps your right cheek,[i] turn and let that person slap your other cheek. 40 If someone sues you for your shirt, give up your coat as well. 41 If a soldier forces you to carry his pack one kilometer, carry it two kilometers.[j] 42 When people ask you for something, give it to them. When they want to borrow money, lend it to them.
Love
(Luke 6.27,28,32-36)
43 (W) You have heard people say, “Love your neighbors and hate your enemies.” 44 But I tell you to love your enemies and pray for anyone who mistreats you. 45 (X) Then you will be acting like your Father in heaven. He makes the sun rise on both good and bad people. And he sends rain for the ones who do right and for the ones who do wrong. 46 If you love only those people who love you, will God reward you for this? Even tax collectors[k] love their friends. 47 If you greet only your friends, what's so great about this? Don't even unbelievers do that? 48 (Y) But you must always act like your Father in heaven.

- 5.17 the Law and the Prophets: The Jewish Scriptures, that is, the Old Testament.
- 5.22 someone: In verses 22-24 the Greek text has “brother,” which may refer to people in general or to other followers.
- 5.31 write out divorce papers for her: Jewish men could divorce their wives, but the women could not divorce their husbands. The purpose of writing these papers was to make it harder for a man to divorce his wife. Before this law was made, all a man had to do was to send his wife away and say that she was no longer his wife.
- 5.32 some terrible sexual sin: This probably refers to the laws about the wrong kinds of marriages that are forbidden in Leviticus 18.6-18 or to some serious sexual sin.
- 5.39 right cheek: A slap on the right cheek was a bad insult.
- 5.41 two kilometers: A Roman soldier had the right to force a person to carry his pack as far as one kilometer.
- 5.46 tax collectors: These were usually Jewish people who paid the Romans for the right to collect taxes. They were hated by other Jews who thought of them as traitors to their country and to their religion.

3 «Dichosos los pobres en espíritu,
porque el reino de los cielos les pertenece.
4 Dichosos los que sufren,
porque serán consolados.
5 Dichosos los humildes,
porque recibirán la tierra como herencia.
6 Dichosos los que tienen hambre y sed de justicia,
porque serán saciados.
7 Dichosos los compasivos,
porque serán tratados con compasión.
8 Dichosos los de corazón limpio,
porque ellos verán a Dios.
9 Dichosos los que trabajan por la paz,
porque serán llamados hijos de Dios.
10 Dichosos los perseguidos por causa de la justicia,
porque el reino de los cielos les pertenece.
11 »Dichosos serán ustedes cuando por mi causa la gente los insulte, los persiga y levante contra ustedes toda clase de calumnias. 12 Alégrense y llénense de júbilo, porque les espera una gran recompensa en el cielo. Así también persiguieron a los profetas que los precedieron a ustedes.
La sal y la luz
13 »Ustedes son la sal de la tierra. Pero si la sal pierde su sabor, ¿cómo lo recobrará? Ya no sirve para nada, sino para que la gente la deseche y la pisotee.
14 »Ustedes son la luz del mundo. Una ciudad en lo alto de una montaña no puede esconderse. 15 Tampoco se enciende una lámpara para cubrirla con una vasija. Por el contrario, se pone en el candelero para que alumbre a todos los que están en la casa. 16 Hagan brillar su luz delante de todos, para que ellos puedan ver las buenas obras de ustedes y alaben a su Padre que está en los cielos.
El cumplimiento de la Ley
17 »No piensen que he venido a anular la Ley o los Profetas; no he venido a anularlos, sino a darles cumplimiento. 18 Les aseguro que mientras existan el cielo y la tierra, ni una letra ni una tilde de la Ley desaparecerán hasta que todo se haya cumplido. 19 Todo el que infrinja uno solo de estos mandamientos, por pequeño que sea, y enseñe a otros a hacer lo mismo, será considerado el más pequeño en el reino de los cielos; pero el que los practique y enseñe será considerado grande en el reino de los cielos. 20 Porque les digo a ustedes que no van a entrar en el reino de los cielos a menos que su justicia supere la de los fariseos y la de los maestros de la Ley.
El homicidio(B)
21 »Ustedes han oído que se dijo a sus antepasados: “No mates”.[a] También se les dijo que todo el que mate quedará sujeto al juicio del tribunal. 22 Pero yo digo que todo el que se enoje[b] con su hermano quedará sujeto al juicio del tribunal. Es más, cualquiera que insulte[c] a su hermano quedará sujeto al juicio del Consejo. Y cualquiera que le diga: “Insensato”, quedará sujeto al fuego del infierno.
23 »Por lo tanto, si estás presentando tu ofrenda en el altar y allí recuerdas que tu hermano tiene algo contra ti, 24 deja tu ofrenda allí delante del altar. Ve primero y reconcíliate con tu hermano; luego vuelve y presenta tu ofrenda.
25 »Si tu adversario te va a denunciar, llega a un acuerdo con él lo más pronto posible. Hazlo mientras vayan de camino al juzgado, no sea que te entregue al juez, el juez al guardia y te echen en la cárcel. 26 Te aseguro que no saldrás de allí hasta que pagues el último centavo.[d]
El adulterio
27 »Ustedes han oído que se dijo: “No cometas adulterio”.[e] 28 Pero yo digo que cualquiera que mira a una mujer y la codicia ya ha cometido adulterio con ella en el corazón. 29 Por tanto, si tu ojo derecho te hace pecar, sácatelo y tíralo. Más te vale perder una sola parte de tu cuerpo y no que todo él sea arrojado al infierno. 30 Y si tu mano derecha te hace pecar, córtatela y arrójala. Más te vale perder una sola parte de tu cuerpo y no que todo él vaya al infierno.
El divorcio
31 »Se ha dicho: “El que se divorcia de su esposa debe darle un certificado de divorcio”.[f] 32 Pero yo digo que, excepto en caso de inmoralidad sexual, todo el que se divorcia de su esposa la induce a cometer adulterio y el que se casa con la divorciada comete adulterio.
Los juramentos
33 »También han oído que se dijo a sus antepasados: “No faltes a tu juramento, sino cumple con tus promesas al Señor”. 34 Pero yo digo: No juren de ningún modo: ni por el cielo, porque es el trono de Dios; 35 ni por la tierra, porque es el estrado de sus pies; ni por Jerusalén, porque es la ciudad del gran Rey. 36 Tampoco jures por tu cabeza, porque no puedes hacer que ni uno solo de tus cabellos se vuelva blanco o negro. 37 Cuando ustedes digan “sí”, que sea realmente sí; y cuando digan “no”, que sea no. Cualquier otra cosa que digan más allá de esto proviene del maligno.
Ojo por ojo
38 »Ustedes han oído que se dijo: “Ojo por ojo y diente por diente”.[g] 39 Pero yo digo: No resistan al que les haga mal. Si alguien te da una bofetada en la mejilla derecha, vuélvele también la otra. 40 Si alguien te pone pleito para quitarte la capa, déjale también la camisa. 41 Si alguien te obliga a llevarle la carga una milla,[h] llévasela dos. 42 Al que te pida, dale; y al que quiera tomar de ti prestado, no le vuelvas la espalda.
El amor a los enemigos
43 »Ustedes han oído que se dijo: “Ama a tu prójimo[i] y odia a tu enemigo”. 44 Pero yo digo: Amen a sus enemigos y oren por quienes los persiguen,[j] 45 para que sean hijos de su Padre que está en los cielos. Él hace que salga el sol sobre malos y buenos, y que llueva sobre justos e injustos. 46 Si ustedes aman solamente a quienes los aman, ¿qué recompensa recibirán? ¿Acaso no hacen eso hasta los recaudadores de impuestos? 47 Y si saludan a sus hermanos solamente, ¿qué de más hacen ustedes? ¿Acaso no hacen esto hasta los gentiles? 48 Por tanto, sean perfectos como su Padre celestial es perfecto.

3 Блаженны нищие духом, ибо их есть Царство Небесное.
4 Блаженны плачущие, ибо они утешатся.
5 Блаженны кроткие, ибо они наследуют землю.
6 Блаженны алчущие и жаждущие правды, ибо они насытятся.
7 Блаженны милостивые, ибо они помилованы будут.
8 Блаженны чистые сердцем, ибо они Бога узрят.
9 Блаженны миротворцы, ибо они будут наречены сынами Божиими.
10 Блаженны изгнанные за правду, ибо их есть Царство Небесное.
11 Блаженны вы, когда будут поносить вас и гнать и всячески неправедно злословить за Меня.
12 Радуйтесь и веселитесь, ибо велика ваша награда на небесах: так гнали [и] пророков, бывших прежде вас.
13 Вы--соль земли. Если же соль потеряет силу, то чем сделаешь ее соленою? Она уже ни к чему негодна, как разве выбросить ее вон на попрание людям.
14 Вы--свет мира. Не может укрыться город, стоящий на верху горы.
15 И, зажегши свечу, не ставят ее под сосудом, но на подсвечнике, и светит всем в доме.
16 Так да светит свет ваш пред людьми, чтобы они видели ваши добрые дела и прославляли Отца вашего Небесного.
17 Не думайте, что Я пришел нарушить закон или пророков: не нарушить пришел Я, но исполнить.
18 Ибо истинно говорю вам: доколе не прейдет небо и земля, ни одна иота или ни одна черта не прейдет из закона, пока не исполнится все.
19 Итак, кто нарушит одну из заповедей сих малейших и научит так людей, тот малейшим наречется в Царстве Небесном; а кто сотворит и научит, тот великим наречется в Царстве Небесном.
20 Ибо, говорю вам, если праведность ваша не превзойдет праведности книжников и фарисеев, то вы не войдете в Царство Небесное.
21 Вы слышали, что сказано древним: не убивай, кто же убьет, подлежит суду.
22 А Я говорю вам, что всякий, гневающийся на брата своего напрасно, подлежит суду; кто же скажет брату своему: 'рака', подлежит синедриону; а кто скажет: 'безумный', подлежит геенне огненной.
23 Итак, если ты принесешь дар твой к жертвеннику и там вспомнишь, что брат твой имеет что-нибудь против тебя,
24 оставь там дар твой пред жертвенником, и пойди прежде примирись с братом твоим, и тогда приди и принеси дар твой.
25 Мирись с соперником твоим скорее, пока ты еще на пути с ним, чтобы соперник не отдал тебя судье, а судья не отдал бы тебя слуге, и не ввергли бы тебя в темницу;
26 истинно говорю тебе: ты не выйдешь оттуда, пока не отдашь до последнего кодранта.
27 Вы слышали, что сказано древним: не прелюбодействуй.
28 А Я говорю вам, что всякий, кто смотрит на женщину с вожделением, уже прелюбодействовал с нею в сердце своем.
29 Если же правый глаз твой соблазняет тебя, вырви его и брось от себя, ибо лучше для тебя, чтобы погиб один из членов твоих, а не все тело твое было ввержено в геенну.
30 И если правая твоя рука соблазняет тебя, отсеки ее и брось от себя, ибо лучше для тебя, чтобы погиб один из членов твоих, а не все тело твое было ввержено в геенну.
31 Сказано также, что если кто разведется с женою своею, пусть даст ей разводную.
32 А Я говорю вам: кто разводится с женою своею, кроме вины прелюбодеяния, тот подает ей повод прелюбодействовать; и кто женится на разведенной, тот прелюбодействует.
33 Еще слышали вы, что сказано древним: не преступай клятвы, но исполняй пред Господом клятвы твои.
34 А Я говорю вам: не клянись вовсе: ни небом, потому что оно престол Божий;
35 ни землею, потому что она подножие ног Его; ни Иерусалимом, потому что он город великого Царя;
36 ни головою твоею не клянись, потому что не можешь ни одного волоса сделать белым или черным.
37 Но да будет слово ваше: да, да; нет, нет; а что сверх этого, то от лукавого.
38 Вы слышали, что сказано: око за око и зуб за зуб.
39 А Я говорю вам: не противься злому. Но кто ударит тебя в правую щеку твою, обрати к нему и другую;
40 и кто захочет судиться с тобою и взять у тебя рубашку, отдай ему и верхнюю одежду;
41 и кто принудит тебя идти с ним одно поприще, иди с ним два.
42 Просящему у тебя дай, и от хотящего занять у тебя не отвращайся.
43 Вы слышали, что сказано: люби ближнего твоего и ненавидь врага твоего.
44 А Я говорю вам: любите врагов ваших, благословляйте проклинающих вас, благотворите ненавидящим вас и молитесь за обижающих вас и гонящих вас,
45 да будете сынами Отца вашего Небесного, ибо Он повелевает солнцу Своему восходить над злыми и добрыми и посылает дождь на праведных и неправедных.
46 Ибо если вы будете любить любящих вас, какая вам награда? Не то же ли делают и мытари?
47 И если вы приветствуете только братьев ваших, что особенного делаете? Не так же ли поступают и язычники?
48 Итак будьте совершенны, как совершен Отец ваш Небесный.
