Matthew 5
Common English Bible
5 1 Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up a mountain. He sat down and his disciples came to him. 2 He taught them, saying:
Happy people
3 “Happy are people who are hopeless, because the kingdom of heaven is theirs.
4 “Happy are people who grieve, because they will be made glad.
5 “Happy are people who are humble, because they will inherit the earth.
6 “Happy are people who are hungry and thirsty for righteousness, because they will be fed until they are full.
7 “Happy are people who show mercy, because they will receive mercy.
8 “Happy are people who have pure hearts, because they will see God.
9 “Happy are people who make peace, because they will be called God’s children.
10 “Happy are people whose lives are harassed because they are righteous, because the kingdom of heaven is theirs.
11 “Happy are you when people insult you and harass you and speak all kinds of bad and false things about you, all because of me. 12 Be full of joy and be glad, because you have a great reward in heaven. In the same way, people harassed the prophets who came before you.
Salt and light
13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its saltiness, how will it become salty again? It’s good for nothing except to be thrown away and trampled under people’s feet. 14 You are the light of the world. A city on top of a hill can’t be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket. Instead, they put it on top of a lampstand, and it shines on all who are in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before people, so they can see the good things you do and praise your Father who is in heaven.
Jesus and the Law
17 “Don’t even begin to think that I have come to do away with the Law and the Prophets. I haven’t come to do away with them but to fulfill them. 18 I say to you very seriously that as long as heaven and earth exist, neither the smallest letter nor even the smallest stroke of a pen will be erased from the Law until everything there becomes a reality. 19 Therefore, whoever ignores one of the least of these commands and teaches others to do the same will be called the lowest in the kingdom of heaven. But whoever keeps these commands and teaches people to keep them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 I say to you that unless your righteousness is greater than the righteousness of the legal experts and the Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
Law of murder
21 “You have heard that it was said to those who lived long ago, Don’t commit murder,[a] and all who commit murder will be in danger of judgment. 22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with their brother or sister will be in danger of judgment. If they say to their brother or sister, ‘You idiot,’ they will be in danger of being condemned by the governing council. And if they say, ‘You fool,’ they will be in danger of fiery hell. 23 Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, 24 leave your gift at the altar and go. First make things right with your brother or sister and then come back and offer your gift. 25 Be sure to make friends quickly with your opponents while you are with them on the way to court. Otherwise, they will haul you before the judge, the judge will turn you over to the officer of the court, and you will be thrown into prison. 26 I say to you in all seriousness that you won’t get out of there until you’ve paid the very last penny.
Law of adultery
27 “You have heard that it was said, Don’t commit adultery.[b] 28 But I say to you that every man who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery in his heart. 29 And if your right eye causes you to fall into sin, tear it out and throw it away. It’s better that you lose a part of your body than that your whole body be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to fall into sin, chop it off and throw it away. It’s better that you lose a part of your body than that your whole body go into hell.
Law of divorce
31 “It was said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife must give her a divorce certificate.’[c] 32 But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife except for sexual unfaithfulness forces her to commit adultery. And whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
Law of solemn pledges
33 “Again you have heard that it was said to those who lived long ago: Don’t make a false solemn pledge, but you should follow through on what you have pledged to the Lord.[d] 34 But I say to you that you must not pledge at all. You must not pledge by heaven, because it’s God’s throne. 35 You must not pledge by the earth, because it’s God’s footstool. You must not pledge by Jerusalem, because it’s the city of the great king. 36 And you must not pledge by your head, because you can’t turn one hair white or black. 37 Let your yes mean yes, and your no mean no. Anything more than this comes from the evil one.
Law of retaliation
38 “You have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.[e] 39 But I say to you that you must not oppose those who want to hurt you. If people slap you on your right cheek, you must turn the left cheek to them as well. 40 When they wish to haul you to court and take your shirt, let them have your coat too. 41 When they force you to go one mile, go with them two. 42 Give to those who ask, and don’t refuse those who wish to borrow from you.
Law of love
43 “You have heard that it was said, You must love your neighbor[f] and hate your enemy. 44 But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who harass you 45 so that you will be acting as children of your Father who is in heaven. He makes the sun rise on both the evil and the good and sends rain on both the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 If you love only those who love you, what reward do you have? Don’t even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing? Don’t even the Gentiles do the same? 48 Therefore, just as your heavenly Father is complete in showing love to everyone, so also you must be complete.

5 Când a văzut Isus noroadele, S-a suit(A) pe munte şi, după ce a şezut jos, ucenicii Lui s-au apropiat de El. 2 Apoi a început să vorbească şi să-i înveţe astfel: 3 „Ferice(B) de cei săraci în duh, căci a lor este Împărăţia cerurilor! 4 Ferice(C) de cei ce plâng, căci ei vor fi mângâiaţi! 5 Ferice(D) de cei blânzi, căci ei(E) vor moşteni pământul! 6 Ferice de cei flămânzi şi însetaţi după neprihănire, căci(F) ei vor fi săturaţi! 7 Ferice de cei milostivi, căci(G) ei vor avea parte de milă! 8 Ferice(H) de cei cu inima curată, căci(I) ei vor vedea pe Dumnezeu! 9 Ferice de cei împăciuitori, căci ei vor fi chemaţi fii ai lui Dumnezeu! 10 Ferice(J) de cei prigoniţi din pricina neprihănirii, căci a lor este Împărăţia cerurilor! 11 Ferice(K) va fi de voi când, din pricina Mea, oamenii vă vor ocărî, vă vor prigoni şi vor spune tot felul de lucruri rele şi neadevărate împotriva voastră! 12 Bucuraţi-vă(L) şi veseliţi-vă, pentru că răsplata voastră este mare în ceruri; căci tot aşa(M) au prigonit pe proroci, care au fost înainte de voi.
Ucenicii sunt sarea pământului şi lumina lumii
13 Voi sunteţi sarea pământului. Dar, dacă sarea(N) îşi pierde gustul, prin ce îşi va căpăta iarăşi puterea de a săra? Atunci nu mai este bună la nimic, decât să fie lepădată afară şi călcată în picioare de oameni. 14 Voi(O) sunteţi lumina lumii. O cetate aşezată pe un munte nu poate să rămână ascunsă. 15 Şi oamenii n-aprind(P) lumina ca s-o pună sub obroc, ci o pun în sfeşnic şi luminează tuturor celor din casă. 16 Tot aşa să lumineze şi lumina voastră înaintea oamenilor, ca ei(Q) să vadă faptele voastre bune şi să slăvească(R) pe Tatăl vostru, care este în ceruri.
Împlinirea Legii şi Prorocilor
17 Să(S) nu credeţi că am venit să stric Legea sau Prorocii; am venit nu să stric, ci să împlinesc. 18 Căci adevărat vă spun, câtă vreme(T) nu vor trece cerul şi pământul, nu va trece o iotă sau o frântură de slovă din Lege înainte ca să se fi întâmplat toate lucrurile. 19 Aşa că oricine(U) va strica una din cele mai mici din aceste porunci şi va învăţa pe oameni aşa va fi chemat cel mai mic în Împărăţia cerurilor; dar oricine le va păzi şi va învăţa pe alţii să le păzească va fi chemat mare în Împărăţia cerurilor. 20 Căci vă spun că, dacă neprihănirea voastră nu va întrece(V) neprihănirea cărturarilor şi a fariseilor, cu niciun chip nu veţi intra în Împărăţia cerurilor.
Despre ucidere
21 Aţi auzit că s-a zis celor din vechime: ‘Să(W) nu ucizi; oricine(X) va ucide va cădea sub pedeapsa judecăţii’. 22 Dar Eu vă spun că oricine se mânie pe fratele său va cădea sub pedeapsa judecăţii; şi oricine va zice fratelui său: ‘Prostule!’ va(Y) cădea sub pedeapsa soborului; iar oricine-i va zice: ‘Nebunule’ va cădea sub pedeapsa focului gheenei. 23 Aşa că, dacă(Z) îţi aduci darul la altar şi acolo îţi aduci aminte că fratele tău are ceva împotriva ta, 24 lasă-ţi(AA) darul acolo înaintea altarului şi du-te întâi de împacă-te cu fratele tău; apoi vino de adu-ţi darul. 25 Caută(AB) de te împacă degrabă cu pârâşul tău, câtă(AC) vreme eşti cu el pe drum, ca nu cumva pârâşul să te dea pe mâna judecătorului, judecătorul să te dea pe mâna temnicerului şi să fii aruncat în temniţă. 26 Adevărat îţi spun că nu vei ieşi de acolo până nu vei plăti cel din urmă bănuţ.
Despre preacurvie şi despărţire
27 Aţi auzit că s-a zis celor din vechime: ‘Să(AD) nu preacurveşti’. 28 Dar Eu vă spun că oricine se uită(AE) la o femeie ca s-o poftească a şi preacurvit cu ea în inima lui. 29 Dacă,(AF) deci, ochiul tău cel drept te face să cazi în păcat, scoate-l(AG) şi leapădă-l de la tine; căci este spre folosul tău să piară unul din mădularele tale şi să nu-ţi fie aruncat tot trupul în gheenă. 30 Dacă mâna ta cea dreaptă te face să cazi în păcat, taie-o şi leapădă-o de la tine; căci este spre folosul tău să piară unul din mădularele tale şi să nu-ţi fie aruncat tot trupul în gheenă. 31 S-a zis iarăşi: ‘Oricine(AH) îşi va lăsa nevasta să-i dea o carte de despărţire’. 32 Dar Eu vă spun că oricine(AI) îşi va lăsa nevasta, în afară numai de pricină de curvie, îi dă prilej să preacurvească; şi cine va lua de nevastă pe cea lăsată de bărbat preacurveşte.
Despre jurământ
33 Aţi mai auzit iarăşi că(AJ) s-a zis celor din vechime: ‘Să nu(AK) juri strâmb; ci să(AL) împlineşti faţă de Domnul jurămintele tale’. 34 Dar Eu vă spun: Să nu juraţi(AM) nicidecum; nici pe cer, pentru că este scaunul(AN) de domnie al lui Dumnezeu; 35 nici pe pământ, pentru că este aşternutul picioarelor Lui; nici pe Ierusalim, pentru că este cetatea(AO) marelui Împărat. 36 Să nu juri nici pe capul tău, căci nu poţi face un singur păr alb sau negru. 37 Felul(AP) vostru de vorbire să fie: ‘Da, da; nu, nu’; ce trece peste aceste cuvinte vine de la cel rău.
Suferirea răului şi iubirea vrăjmaşilor
38 Aţi auzit că s-a zis: ‘Ochi(AQ) pentru ochi şi dinte pentru dinte’. 39 Dar Eu vă spun: Să(AR) nu vă împotriviţi celui ce vă face rău. Ci, oricui(AS) te loveşte peste obrazul drept, întoarce-i şi pe celălalt. 40 Oricui vrea să se judece cu tine şi să-ţi ia haina, lasă-i şi cămaşa. 41 Dacă te sileşte(AT) cineva să mergi cu el o milă de loc, mergi cu el două. 42 Celui ce-ţi cere, dă-i; şi nu(AU) întoarce spatele celui ce vrea să se împrumute de la tine. 43 Aţi auzit că s-a zis: ‘Să(AV) iubeşti pe aproapele tău şi să(AW) urăşti pe vrăjmaşul tău’. 44 Dar Eu vă spun: Iubiţi(AX) pe vrăjmaşii voştri, binecuvântaţi pe cei ce vă blestemă, faceţi bine celor ce vă urăsc şi rugaţi-vă pentru cei ce vă asupresc(AY) şi vă prigonesc, 45 ca să fiţi fii ai Tatălui vostru care este în ceruri; căci El face să răsară(AZ) soarele Său peste cei răi şi peste cei buni şi dă ploaie peste cei drepţi şi peste cei nedrepţi. 46 Dacă iubiţi(BA) numai pe cei ce vă iubesc, ce răsplată mai aşteptaţi? Nu fac aşa şi vameşii? 47 Şi dacă îmbrăţişaţi cu dragoste numai pe fraţii voştri, ce lucru neobişnuit faceţi? Oare păgânii nu fac la fel? 48 Voi fiţi(BB) dar desăvârşiţi, după cum(BC) şi Tatăl vostru cel ceresc este desăvârşit.
