Retaliation

³⁸^(A)“You have heard that it was said, ^(B)‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ ³⁹But I say to you, ^(C)Do not resist the one who is evil. But ^(D)if anyone ^(E)slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. ⁴⁰And ^(F)if anyone would sue you and take your tunic,^[a] let him have your cloak as well. ⁴¹And if anyone ^(G)forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. ⁴²^(H)Give to the one who begs from you, and ^(I)do not refuse the one who would borrow from you.

Love Your Enemies

⁴³^(J)“You have heard that it was said, ^(K)‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ ⁴⁴But I say to you, ^(L)Love your enemies and ^(M)pray for those who persecute you, ⁴⁵^(N)so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and ^(O)sends rain on the just and on the unjust. ⁴⁶^(P)For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? ⁴⁷And if you greet only your brothers,^[b] what more are you doing than others? Do not even ^(Q)the Gentiles do the same? ⁴⁸^(R)You therefore must be ^(S)perfect, ^(T)as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Giving to the Needy

6 “Beware of ^(U)practicing your righteousness before other people in order ^(V)to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.

²^(W)“Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may ^(X)be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have ^(Y)received their reward. ³But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, ⁴so that your giving may be in secret. ^(Z)And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

³⁵For ^(A)I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you ^(B)gave me drink, ^(C)I was a stranger and you welcomed me, ³⁶^(D)I was naked and you clothed me, ^(E)I was sick and you ^(F)visited me, ^(G)I was in prison and you came to me.’ ³⁷Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? ³⁸And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? ³⁹And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ ⁴⁰And ^(H)the King will answer them, ^(I)‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these ^(J)my brothers,^[a] you did it to me.’
