Retaliation

38 (A)“You have heard that it was said, (B)‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ 39 But I say to you, (C)Do not resist the one who is evil. But (D)if anyone (E)slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. 40 And (F)if anyone would sue you and take your tunic,[a] let him have your cloak as well. 41 And if anyone (G)forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. 42 (H)Give to the one who begs from you, and (I)do not refuse the one who would borrow from you.

Love Your Enemies

43 (J)“You have heard that it was said, (K)‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, (L)Love your enemies and (M)pray for those who persecute you, 45 (N)so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and (O)sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 (P)For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers,[b] what more are you doing than others? Do not even (Q)the Gentiles do the same? 48 (R)You therefore must be (S)perfect, (T)as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Giving to the Needy

“Beware of (U)practicing your righteousness before other people in order (V)to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.

(W)“Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may (X)be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have (Y)received their reward. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. (Z)And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

  2. Matthew 5:47 Or brothers and sisters. In New Testament usage, depending on the context, the plural Greek word adelphoi (translated “brothers”) may refer either to brothers or to brothers and sisters

35 For (A)I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you (B)gave me drink, (C)I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 (D)I was naked and you clothed me, (E)I was sick and you (F)visited me, (G)I was in prison and you came to me.’ 37 Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? 38 And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? 39 And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ 40 And (H)the King will answer them, (I)‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these (J)my brothers,[a] you did it to me.’
