³⁸ “^(A)You have heard that it was said, ‘^(B)Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ ³⁹ But I say to you, do not show opposition against an evil person; but ^(C)whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other toward him also. ⁴⁰ And if anyone wants to sue you and take your ^[a]tunic, let him have your ^[b]cloak also. ⁴¹ Whoever ^[c]forces you to go one mile, go with him two. ^42 (D)Give to him who asks of you, and do not turn away from him who wants to borrow from you.

⁴³ “^(E)You have heard that it was said, ‘^(F)You shall love your neighbor ^(G)and hate your enemy.’ ⁴⁴ But I say to you, ^(H)love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, ⁴⁵ so that you may prove yourselves to be ^(I)sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. ⁴⁶ For ^(J)if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Even the tax collectors, do they not do the same? ⁴⁷ And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Even the Gentiles, do they not do the same? ⁴⁸ Therefore ^(K)you shall be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

¹⁰ Now the son of an Israelite woman—his father was an Egyptian—went out among the sons of Israel; and the Israelite woman’s son and an Israelite man had a fight within the camp. ¹¹ And the son of the Israelite woman blasphemed the ^(A)Name and cursed. So they brought him to Moses. (Now his mother’s name was Shelomith, the daughter of Dibri, of the tribe of Dan.) ¹² Then they put him in custody, waiting for Moses to give them a clear decision in accordance with ^(B)the command of the Lord.

¹³ Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ¹⁴ “Bring the one who has cursed outside the camp, and have all who heard him ^(C)lay their hands on his head; then ^(D)have all the congregation stone him. ¹⁵ You shall also speak to the sons of Israel, saying, ‘^(E)If anyone curses his God, then he will bear the responsibility for his sin. ¹⁶ Moreover, the one who ^(F)blasphemes the name of the Lord must be put to death; all the congregation shall certainly stone him. The stranger as well as the native, when he blasphemes the Name, shall be put to death.

An Eye for an Eye

¹⁷ ‘Now ^(G)if someone ^[a]takes any human life, he must be put to death. ¹⁸ But ^(H)the one who ^[b]takes the life of an animal shall make restitution, life for life. ¹⁹ If someone injures his neighbor, just as he has done, so shall it be done to him: ^20 (I)fracture for fracture, ^(J)eye for eye, tooth for tooth; just as he has injured a person, so shall it be ^[c]inflicted on him. ²¹ So the one who ^[d]kills an animal shall make restitution, but ^(K)the one who ^[e]kills a person shall be put to death. ²² There shall be only ^(L)one ^[f]standard for you; it shall be for the stranger as well as the native, for I am the Lord your God.’” ²³ Then Moses spoke to the sons of Israel, and they brought the one who had cursed outside the camp, and stoned him with stones. So the sons of Israel did just as the Lord had commanded Moses.
