¹⁴ “You are the light of the world.^(A) A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. ¹⁵ Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.^{(B) 16} In the same way, let your light shine before others,^(C) that they may see your good deeds^(D) and glorify^(E) your Father in heaven.

The Fulfillment of the Law

¹⁷ “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.^{(F) 18} For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.^{(G) 19} Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands^(H) and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. ²⁰ For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.^(I)

Murder^(J)

²¹ “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder,^[a](K) and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ ²² But I tell you that anyone who is angry^(L) with a brother or sister^[b][c] will be subject to judgment.^(M) Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’^[d] is answerable to the court.^(N) And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.^(O)

²³ “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, ²⁴ leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.

²⁵ “Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. ²⁶ Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.

The Plague on Livestock

9 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of the Hebrews, says: “Let my people go, so that they may worship^(A) me.” ² If you refuse to let them go and continue to hold them back, ³ the hand^(B) of the Lord will bring a terrible plague^(C) on your livestock in the field—on your horses, donkeys and camels and on your cattle, sheep and goats. ⁴ But the Lord will make a distinction between the livestock of Israel and that of Egypt,^(D) so that no animal belonging to the Israelites will die.’”

⁵ The Lord set a time and said, “Tomorrow the Lord will do this in the land.” ⁶ And the next day the Lord did it: All the livestock^(E) of the Egyptians died,^(F) but not one animal belonging to the Israelites died. ⁷ Pharaoh investigated and found that not even one of the animals of the Israelites had died. Yet his heart^(G) was unyielding and he would not let the people go.^(H)

The Plague of Boils

⁸ Then the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Take handfuls of soot from a furnace and have Moses toss it into the air in the presence of Pharaoh. ⁹ It will become fine dust over the whole land of Egypt, and festering boils^(I) will break out on people and animals throughout the land.”

¹⁰ So they took soot from a furnace and stood before Pharaoh. Moses tossed it into the air, and festering boils broke out on people and animals. ¹¹ The magicians^(J) could not stand before Moses because of the boils that were on them and on all the Egyptians. ¹² But the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart^(K) and he would not listen^(L) to Moses and Aaron, just as the Lord had said to Moses.

The Plague of Hail

¹³ Then the Lord said to Moses, “Get up early in the morning, confront Pharaoh and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of the Hebrews, says: Let my people go, so that they may worship^(M) me, ¹⁴ or this time I will send the full force of my plagues against you and against your officials and your people, so you may know^(N) that there is no one like^(O) me in all the earth. ¹⁵ For by now I could have stretched out my hand and struck you and your people^(P) with a plague that would have wiped you off the earth. ¹⁶ But I have raised you up^[a] for this very purpose,^(Q) that I might show you my power^(R) and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth. ¹⁷ You still set yourself against my people and will not let them go. ¹⁸ Therefore, at this time tomorrow I will send the worst hailstorm^(S) that has ever fallen on Egypt, from the day it was founded till now.^{(T) 19} Give an order now to bring your livestock and everything you have in the field to a place of shelter, because the hail will fall on every person and animal that has not been brought in and is still out in the field, and they will die.’”

²⁰ Those officials of Pharaoh who feared^(U) the word of the Lord hurried to bring their slaves and their livestock inside. ²¹ But those who ignored^(V) the word of the Lord left their slaves and livestock in the field.

¹¹ but the crowds learned about it and followed him. He welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God,^(A) and healed those who needed healing.
