The First Disciples

18 (A)Now as Jesus was walking by (B)the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, (C)Simon who was called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. 19 And He *said to them, [a]Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20 Immediately they left their nets and followed Him. 21 Going on from there He saw two other brothers, [b](D)James the son of Zebedee, and [c]John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and He called them. 22 Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.

Ministry in Galilee

23 Jesus was going (E)throughout all Galilee, (F)teaching in their synagogues and (G)proclaiming the [d]gospel of the kingdom, and (H)healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness among the people.

24 The news about Him spread (I)throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all who were ill, those suffering with various diseases and pains, (J)demoniacs, [e](K)epileptics, (L)paralytics; and He healed them. 25 Large crowds (M)followed Him from Galilee and (N)the Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judea and from (O)beyond the Jordan.

The Sermon on the Mount; The Beatitudes

(P)When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on (Q)the [f]mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him. (R)He opened His mouth and began to teach them, saying,

[g](S)Blessed are the [h]poor in spirit, for (T)theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

“Blessed are (U)those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

“Blessed are (V)the [i]gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.

“Blessed are (W)those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

“Blessed are (X)the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

“Blessed are (Y)the pure in heart, for (Z)they shall see God.

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for (AA)they shall be called sons of God.

10 “Blessed are those who have been (AB)persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for (AC)theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 “Blessed are you when people (AD)insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for (AE)in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
