Ministry in Galilee

12 When he heard that John had been arrested,(A) he withdrew into Galilee.(B) 13 He left Nazareth and went to live in Capernaum(C) by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali. 14 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:

15 Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali,
along the road by the sea, beyond the Jordan,
Galilee of the Gentiles.
16 The people who live in darkness
have seen a great light,
and for those living in the land of the shadow of death,
a light has dawned.[a][b] (D)

17 From then on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, because the kingdom of heaven(E) has come near.”

Ministry in Galilee

14 Then Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit,(A) and news about him spread throughout the entire vicinity.(B) 15 He was teaching in their synagogues,(C) being praised[a] by everyone.

Rejection at Nazareth

16 He came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up.(D) As usual, he entered the synagogue on the Sabbath day(E) and stood up to read.(F) 17 The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him, and unrolling the scroll, he found the place where it was written:

18 The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me
to preach good news to the poor.
He has sent me[b]
to proclaim release[c] to the captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to set free the oppressed,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.[d](G)

20 He then rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down.(H) And the eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21 He began by saying to them, “Today as you listen, this Scripture has been fulfilled.”(I)

22 They were all speaking well of him[e] and were amazed by the gracious words that came from his mouth; yet they said, “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” (J)

23 Then he said to them, “No doubt you will quote this proverb[f] to me: ‘Doctor, heal yourself. What we’ve heard that took place in Capernaum,(K) do here in your hometown also.’”

24 He also said, “Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in his hometown.(L) 25 But I say to you, there were certainly many widows in Israel in Elijah’s days,(M) when the sky was shut up for three years and six months while a great famine came over all the land. 26 Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them except a widow at Zarephath in Sidon.(N) 27 And in the prophet Elisha’s time, there were many in Israel who had leprosy,[g] and yet not one of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.”(O)

28 When they heard this, everyone in the synagogue was enraged. 29 They got up, drove him out of town,(P) and brought him to the edge of the hill that their town was built on, intending to hurl him over the cliff. 30 But he passed right through the crowd and went on his way.(Q)

Driving Out an Unclean Spirit

31 Then he went down to Capernaum,(R) a town in Galilee, and was teaching them on the Sabbath. 32 They were astonished at his teaching because his message had authority.(S) 33 In the synagogue there was a man with an unclean demonic spirit who cried out with a loud voice,(T) 34 “Leave us alone! What do you have to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!” (U)

35 But Jesus rebuked him(V) and said, “Be silent and come out of him!”(W) And throwing him down before them, the demon came out of him without hurting him at all.

36 Amazement came over them all, and they were saying to one another, “What is this message? For he commands the unclean spirits with authority and power, and they come out!” 37 And news about him began to go out to every place in the vicinity.

Driving Out an Unclean Spirit

21 They(A) went into Capernaum,(B) and right away he entered the synagogue(C) on the Sabbath(D) and began to teach.(E) 22 They were astonished(F) at his teaching(G) because he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not like the scribes.

23 Just then a man with an unclean(H) spirit(I) was in their synagogue.(J) He cried out, 24 “What do you have to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth?(K) Have you come to destroy(L) us? I know who you are—the Holy(M) One of God!” (N)

25 Jesus rebuked(O) him saying, “Be silent,(P) and come out of him!” 26 And the unclean spirit threw him into convulsions,(Q) shouted with a loud voice, and came out of him.

27 They were all amazed,(R) and so they began to ask(S) each other, “What is this? A new teaching(T) with authority![a](U) He commands even the unclean(V) spirits,(W) and they obey him.” 28 At once the news about him spread throughout the entire vicinity of Galilee.(X)
