João Batista prepara o caminho
(Mc 1.2-8; Lc 3.1-18; Jo 1.19-28)
3 Por esses dias, apareceu João Batista a pregar no deserto da Judeia: 2 “Arrependam-se! O reino dos céus está próximo!” 3 Já o profeta Isaías tinha anunciado este trabalho de João:
“A voz gritando no deserto:
‘Façam um caminho para o Senhor.
Façam-lhe um caminho direito.’ ”[a]
4 A roupa dele era feita de pelo de camelo tecido, usava um cinto de cabedal e alimentava-se de gafanhotos e mel silvestre. 5 Gente de Jerusalém e de todo o vale do Jordão, e até de todas as partes da Judeia, iam ao deserto para o ver e ouvir. 6 Confessavam os seus pecados e João batizava-os no rio Jordão.
7 Ao ver muitos fariseus e saduceus que queriam também ser batizados, dizia-lhes: “Raça de víboras! Quem vos avisou para fugir do julgamento de Deus que há de vir? 8 Têm de provar que abandonaram o pecado, praticando obras que mostrem arrependimento.
9 E não pensem que estão em segurança por descenderem de Abraão; isso não basta. Pois digo-vos que até destas pedras do deserto Deus pode fazer nascer filhos de Abraão! 10 O machado do seu julgamento está suspenso sobre as vossas vidas, prestes a cortar as raízes e a derrubar-vos. Sim, toda a árvore que não dá bom fruto será abatida e lançada no fogo.
11 Eu batizo com água quem se arrepende; mas vem aí outro, muito maior do que eu, tão grande que nem sou digno de lhe levar as sandálias. Ele vai batizar-vos com o Espírito Santo e com fogo. 12 Na sua mão tem a pá e limpará a eira. Arrecadará o grão no celeiro; mas queimará a palha com fogo que jamais se apaga.”
O batismo de Jesus

13 Jesus veio da Galileia e foi até ao rio Jordão, para que João aí o batizasse. 14 Contudo, João não queria fazê-lo: “Não está certo. Eu é que preciso de ser batizado por ti.”
15 “Aceita teres de me batizar, porque convém que eu faça tudo o que a justiça de Deus manda.” Então, João batizou-o.
16 Depois do seu batismo, logo que Jesus saiu da água, os céus abriram-se e viu o Espírito de Deus descendo sob a forma de uma pomba. 17 E uma voz do céu disse: “Este é o meu Filho amado, em quem tenho grande prazer.”

John the Baptist Prepares the Way(A)
3 In those days John the Baptist(B) came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea 2 and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven(C) has come near.” 3 This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah:
“A voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for him.’”[a](D)
4 John’s(E) clothes were made of camel’s hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist.(F) His food was locusts(G) and wild honey. 5 People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan. 6 Confessing their sins, they were baptized(H) by him in the Jordan River.
7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: “You brood of vipers!(I) Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?(J) 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.(K) 9 And do not think you can say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’(L) I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 10 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.(M)
11 “I baptize you with[b] water for repentance.(N) But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with[c] the Holy Spirit(O) and fire.(P) 12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”(Q)
The Baptism of Jesus(R)
13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John.(S) 14 But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?”
15 Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented.
16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened,(T) and he saw the Spirit of God(U) descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven(V) said, “This is my Son,(W) whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”(X)
