^2 (A)“Repent, for ^(B)the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”^[a]

⁸ Bear fruit ^(A)in keeping with repentance.

⁴ because John had been saying to him, ^(A)“It is not lawful for you to have her.”

^4 (A)John appeared, baptizing in ^(B)the wilderness and proclaiming ^(C)a baptism of ^(D)repentance ^(E)for the forgiveness of sins.

³ And he went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming ^(A)a baptism of repentance ^(B)for the forgiveness of sins.

⁸ Bear fruits ^(A)in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ^(B)‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you, God is able from ^(C)these stones to raise up children for Abraham. ⁹ Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. ^(D)Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”

¹¹ And he answered them, ^(A)“Whoever has two tunics^[a] is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise.”

¹³ And he said to them, ^(A)“Collect no more than you are authorized to do.” ¹⁴ Soldiers also asked him, “And we, ^(B)what shall we do?” And he said to them, ^(C)“Do not extort money from anyone by threats or by false accusation, and be content with your ^(D)wages.”
