The Return to Nazareth

19 After Herod died, an angel(A) of the Lord appeared in a dream(B) to Joseph in Egypt 20 and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child’s life are dead.”(C)

21 So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream,(D) he withdrew to the district of Galilee,(E) 23 and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth.(F) So was fulfilled(G) what was said through the prophets, that he would be called a Nazarene.(H)

The Boy Jesus at the Temple

41 Every year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the Festival of the Passover.(B) 42 When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the custom. 43 After the festival was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it. 44 Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends. 45 When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. 46 After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47 Everyone who heard him was amazed(C) at his understanding and his answers. 48 When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother(D) said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father(E) and I have been anxiously searching for you.”

49 “Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?”[a](F) 50 But they did not understand what he was saying to them.(G)

51 Then he went down to Nazareth with them(H) and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart.(I) 52 And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.(J)

In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate(C) was governor of Judea, Herod(D) tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene— during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas,(E) the word of God came to John(F) son of Zechariah(G) in the wilderness. John’s(A) clothes were made of camel’s hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist.(B) His food was locusts(C) and wild honey. People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan. Confessing their sins, they were baptized(D) by him in the Jordan River.

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: “You brood of vipers!(E) Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?(F) Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.(G) And do not think you can say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’(H) I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 10 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.(I)

10 “What should we do then?”(A) the crowd asked.

11 John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.”(B)

12 Even tax collectors came to be baptized.(C) “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?”

13 “Don’t collect any more than you are required to,”(D) he told them.

14 Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?”

He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely(E)—be content with your pay.”

15 The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John(F) might possibly be the Messiah.(G) 16 John answered them all, “I baptize you with[a] water.(H) But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with[b] the Holy Spirit and fire.(I) 17 His winnowing fork(J) is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”(K) 18 And with many other words John exhorted the people and proclaimed the good news to them.
