45 Now from the sixth hour[a] there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour.[b] 46 About the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lima[c] sabachthani?” That is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”Psalm 22:1

47 Some of them who stood there, when they heard it, said, “This man is calling Elijah.”

48 Immediately one of them ran and took a sponge, filled it with vinegar, put it on a reed, and gave him a drink. 49 The rest said, “Let him be. Let’s see whether Elijah comes to save him.”

50 Jesus cried again with a loud voice, and yielded up his spirit.

51 Behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from the top to the bottom. The earth quaked and the rocks were split. 52 The tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; 53 and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection, they entered into the holy city and appeared to many.

54 Now the centurion and those who were with him watching Jesus, when they saw the earthquake and the things that were done, were terrified, saying, “Truly this was the Son of God!”

55 Many women were there watching from afar, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, serving him. 56 Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.

The Death of Jesus

45 From noon until three in the afternoon,[a] darkness came over the whole land.[b](A) 46 About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Elí, Elí, lemá[c] sabachtháni?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?”[d](B)

47 When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He’s calling for Elijah.”

48 Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge, filled it with sour wine, put it on a stick, and offered him a drink.(C) 49 But the rest said, “Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.”

50 But Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and gave up his spirit.(D) 51 Suddenly, the curtain of the sanctuary(E) was torn in two from top to bottom, the earth quaked, and the rocks were split. 52 The tombs were also opened(F) and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised. 53 And they came out of the tombs after his resurrection, entered the holy city, and appeared to many.

54 When the centurion and those with him, who were keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they were terrified and said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!” (G)

55 Many women who had followed Jesus from Galilee and looked after him were there, watching from a distance.(H) 56 Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.(I)
