The Death of Jesus

⁴⁵ Now from the sixth hour^[a] there was darkness over all the land^[b] until the ninth hour.^{[c] 46} And about the ninth hour Jesus ^(A)cried out with a loud voice, saying, ^(B)“Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” ⁴⁷ And some of the bystanders, hearing it, said, “This man is calling Elijah.” ⁴⁸ And one of them at once ran and took a sponge, filled it with ^(C)sour wine, and put it on a reed and ^(D)gave it to him to drink. ⁴⁹ But the others said, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him.” ⁵⁰ And Jesus ^(E)cried out again with a loud voice and ^(F)yielded up his spirit.

⁵¹ And behold, ^(G)the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And ^(H)the earth shook, and the rocks were split. ⁵² The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of ^(I)the saints ^(J)who had fallen asleep were raised, ⁵³ and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they went into ^(K)the holy city and appeared to many. ^54 (L)When the centurion and those who were with him, ^(M)keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, ^(N)“Truly this was the Son^[d] of God!”

⁵⁵ There were also ^(O)many women there, looking on ^(P)from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, ^(Q)ministering to him, ⁵⁶ among whom were ^(R)Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Joseph and ^(S)the mother of the sons of Zebedee.

³³ And when the sixth hour^[a] had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.^{[b] 34} And at the ninth hour Jesus ^(A)cried with a loud voice, ^(B)“Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” ³⁵ And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.” ³⁶ And someone ran and filled a sponge with ^(C)sour wine, put it on a reed ^(D)and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.” ³⁷ And Jesus ^(E)uttered a loud cry and ^(F)breathed his last. ³⁸ And ^(G)the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. ^39 (H)And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he^[c] breathed his last, he said, ^(I)“Truly this man was the Son^[d] of God!”

⁴⁰ There were also ^(J)women looking on ^(K)from a distance, among whom were ^(L)Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and ^(M)Salome. ⁴¹ When he was in Galilee, they followed him and ^(N)ministered to him, and there were also many other women who ^(O)came up with him to Jerusalem.

^44 (A)It was now about the sixth hour,^[a] and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour,^{[b] 45} while the sun's light failed. And ^(B)the curtain of the temple was torn in two. ⁴⁶ Then Jesus, ^(C)calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, ^(D)into your hands I ^(E)commit my spirit!” And having said this ^(F)he breathed his last. ⁴⁷ Now ^(G)when the centurion saw what had taken place, ^(H)he praised God, saying, “Certainly this man was innocent!” ⁴⁸ And all the crowds that had assembled for this spectacle, when they saw what had taken place, returned home ^(I)beating their breasts. ⁴⁹ And all ^(J)his acquaintances and ^(K)the women who had followed him from Galilee ^(L)stood at a distance watching these things.

Jesus Is Buried

^50 (M)Now there was a man named Joseph, from the Jewish town of Arimathea. He was a member of the council, a good and righteous man, ⁵¹ who had not consented to their decision and action; and he ^(N)was looking for the kingdom of God. ⁵² This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. ⁵³ Then he took it down and wrapped it in a linen shroud and ^(O)laid him in a tomb cut in stone, ^(P)where no one had ever yet been laid. ⁵⁴ It was the day of ^(Q)Preparation, and the Sabbath was beginning.^{[c] 55 (R)}The women ^(S)who had come with him from Galilee followed and saw the tomb and how his body was laid. ⁵⁶ Then they returned and ^(T)prepared spices and ointments.

On the Sabbath they rested ^(U)according to the commandment.

²⁸ After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now ^(A)finished, said (^(B)to fulfill the Scripture), ^(C)“I thirst.” ²⁹ A jar full of sour wine stood there, ^(D)so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. ³⁰ When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, ^(E)“It is finished,” and he bowed his head and ^(F)gave up his spirit.

Jesus' Side Is Pierced

³¹ Since it was ^(G)the day of Preparation, and ^(H)so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was ^(I)a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. ³² So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other ^(J)who had been crucified with him. ³³ But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. ³⁴ But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out ^(K)blood and water. ^35 (L)He who saw it has borne witness—^(M)his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth—^(N)that you also may believe. ^36 (O)For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: ^(P)“Not one of his bones ^(Q)will be broken.” ³⁷ And again another Scripture says, ^(R)“They will look on him whom they have pierced.”

Jesus Is Buried

^38 (S)After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly ^(T)for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body. ^39 (U)Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus^[a] by night, came ^(V)bringing a mixture of ^(W)myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds^[b] in weight. ⁴⁰ So they took the body of Jesus and ^(X)bound it in ^(Y)linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. ⁴¹ Now in the place where he was crucified there was a ^(Z)garden, and ^(AA)in the garden a new tomb ^(AB)in which no one had yet been laid. ⁴² So because of the Jewish ^(AC)day of Preparation, ^(AD)since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.
