The King on a Cross(A)

32 (B)Now as they came out, (C)they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name. Him they compelled to bear His cross. 33 (D)And when they had come to a place called Golgotha, that is to say, Place of a Skull, 34 (E)they gave Him [a]sour wine mingled with gall to drink. But when He had tasted it, He would not drink.

35 (F)Then they crucified Him, and divided His garments, casting lots, [b]that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet:

(G)“They divided My garments among them,
And for My clothing they cast lots.”

36 (H)Sitting down, they kept watch over Him there. 37 And they (I)put up over His head the accusation written against Him:

THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

38 (J)Then two robbers were crucified with Him, one on the right and another on the left.

39 And (K)those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads 40 and saying, (L)“You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save Yourself! (M)If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.”

41 Likewise the chief priests also, mocking with the [c]scribes and elders, said, 42 “He (N)saved others; Himself He cannot save. [d]If He is the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe [e]Him. 43 (O)He trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now if He will have Him; for He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’ ”

44 (P)Even the robbers who were crucified with Him reviled Him with the same thing.

The King on a Cross(A)

26 (B)Now as they led Him away, they laid hold of a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, who was coming from the country, and on him they laid the cross that he might bear it after Jesus.

27 And a great multitude of the people followed Him, and women who also mourned and lamented Him. 28 But Jesus, turning to them, said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. 29 (C)For indeed the days are coming in which they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren, wombs that never bore, and breasts which never nursed!’ 30 Then they will begin (D)‘to say to the mountains, “Fall on us!” and to the hills, “Cover us!” ’ 31 (E)For if they do these things in the green wood, what will be done in the dry?”

32 (F)There were also two others, criminals, led with Him to be put to death. 33 And (G)when they had come to the place called Calvary, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right hand and the other on the left. 34 [a]Then Jesus said, “Father, (H)forgive them, for (I)they do not know what they do.”

And (J)they divided His garments and cast lots. 35 And (K)the people stood looking on. But even the (L)rulers with them sneered, saying, “He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Christ, the chosen of God.”

36 The soldiers also mocked Him, coming and offering Him (M)sour wine, 37 and saying, “If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself.”

38 (N)And an inscription also was [b]written over Him in letters of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew:

THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

39 (O)Then one of the criminals who were hanged blasphemed Him, saying, [c]“If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us.”

40 But the other, answering, rebuked him, saying, “Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation? 41 And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done (P)nothing wrong.” 42 Then he said [d]to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.”

43 And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in (Q)Paradise.”

The King on a Cross(A)

17 (B)And He, bearing His cross, (C)went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha, 18 where they crucified Him, and (D)two others with Him, one on either side, and Jesus in the center. 19 (E)Now Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross. And the writing was:

JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

20 Then many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.

21 Therefore the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but, ‘He said, “I am the King of the Jews.” ’ ”

22 Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

23 (F)Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece. 24 They said therefore among themselves, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be,” that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says:

(G)“They divided My garments among them,
And for My clothing they cast lots.”

Therefore the soldiers did these things.

Behold Your Mother

25 (H)Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of (I)Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and (J)the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, (K)“Woman, behold your son!” 27 Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” And from that hour that disciple took her (L)to his own home.
