Jesus Handed Over to Pilate

27 When daybreak came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people plotted against Jesus to put him to death.(A) After tying him up, they led him away and handed him over to Pilate,[a] the governor.(B)

Judas Hangs Himself

Then Judas, his betrayer, seeing that Jesus had been condemned, was full of remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders.(C) “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood,” he said.

“What’s that to us?” they said. “See to it yourself!” So he threw the silver into the temple(D) and departed. Then he went and hanged himself.

The chief priests took the silver and said, “It’s not permitted(E) to put it into the temple treasury, since it is blood money.” They conferred together and bought the potter’s field with it as a burial place for foreigners. Therefore that field has been called “Field of Blood” to this day. Then what was spoken through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled: They took[b] the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him whose price was set by the Israelites, 10 and they gave[c] them for the potter’s field, as the Lord directed me.[d](F)

Jesus Faces the Governor

11 Now Jesus stood before the governor.(G) “Are you the king of the Jews?” the governor asked him.

Jesus answered, “You say so.”(H) 12 While he was being accused by the chief priests and elders, he didn’t answer.(I)

13 Then Pilate said to him, “Don’t you hear how much they are testifying against you?” 14 But he didn’t answer him on even one charge, so that the governor was quite amazed.(J)

Jesus Faces Pilate

15 As(A) soon as it was morning, having held a meeting with the elders,(B) scribes,(C) and the whole Sanhedrin, the chief priests(D) tied Jesus up, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate.(E)

So Pilate asked him, “Are you the king(F) of the Jews?”(G)

He answered him, “You say so.”

And the chief priests accused him of many things. Pilate(H) questioned him again, “Aren’t you going to answer? Look how many things they are accusing you of!” But Jesus still did not answer, and so Pilate was amazed.

Jesus Faces the Sanhedrin

66 When daylight came,(A) the elders[a] of the people, both the chief priests and the scribes,(B) convened and brought him before their Sanhedrin.(C) 67 They said,(D) “If you are the Messiah, tell us.”

But he said to them, “If I do tell you, you will not believe. 68 And if I ask you, you will not answer. 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.”(E)

70 They all asked, “Are you, then, the Son of God?” (F)

And he said to them, “You say that I am.”(G)

71 “Why do we need any more testimony,” they said, “since we’ve heard it ourselves from his mouth?”

Jesus Faces Pilate

23 Then(H) their whole assembly rose up and brought him before Pilate. They began to accuse him, saying, “We found this man misleading our nation, opposing payment of taxes(I) to Caesar, and saying that he himself is the Messiah, a king.”

So Pilate asked him,(J) “Are you the king of the Jews?” (K)

He answered him, “You say so.”[b]

Pilate then told the chief priests and the crowds, “I find no grounds(L) for charging this man.”

But they kept insisting, “He stirs up the people,(M) teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee(N) where he started even to here.”

Jesus Faces Herod Antipas

When Pilate(O) heard this,[c] he asked if the man was a Galilean. Finding that he was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod,(P) who was also in Jerusalem during those days. Herod was very glad to see Jesus; for a long time he had wanted to see him because he had heard about him and was hoping to see some miracle[d] performed by him. So he kept asking him questions, but Jesus did not answer him.(Q) 10 The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing him. 11 Then Herod, with his soldiers, treated him with contempt, mocked(R) him, dressed him in bright clothing,(S) and sent him back to Pilate. 12 That very day Herod and Pilate became friends.[e](T) Previously, they had been enemies.

Jesus before Pilate

28 Then(A) they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the governor’s headquarters.(B) It was early morning. They did not enter the headquarters themselves; otherwise they would be defiled and unable to eat the Passover.

29 So Pilate(C) came out to them and said, “What charge(D) do you bring against this man?”

30 They answered him, “If this man weren’t a criminal,[a] we wouldn’t have handed him over to you.”

31 Pilate told them, “You take him and judge him according to your law.”

“It’s not legal for us to put anyone to death,” the Jews declared. 32 They said this so that Jesus’s words might be fulfilled indicating what kind of death he was going to die.(E)

33 Then Pilate went back into the headquarters, summoned Jesus, and said to him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” (F)

34 Jesus answered, “Are you asking this on your own, or have others told you about me?”

35 “I’m not a Jew, am I?” Pilate replied. “Your own nation and the chief priests handed you over to me. What have you done?”

36 “My kingdom(G) is not of this world,” said Jesus. “If my kingdom were of this world,(H) my servants(I) would fight, so that I wouldn’t be handed over to the Jews. But as it is,[b] my kingdom is not from here.”(J)

37 “You are a king then?” Pilate asked.

“You say that I’m a king,” Jesus replied. “I was born for this, and I have come into the world(K) for this: to testify(L) to the truth.(M) Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”

38 “What is truth?” said Pilate.

Jesus or Barabbas

After he had said this, he went out to the Jews again and told them, “I find no grounds(N) for charging him.
