Living Bible
26 When Jesus had finished this talk with his disciples, he told them,
2 “As you know, the Passover celebration begins in two days, and I[a] shall be betrayed and crucified.”
3 At that very moment the chief priests and other Jewish officials were meeting at the residence of Caiaphas the high priest, 4 to discuss ways of capturing Jesus quietly and killing him. 5 “But not during the Passover celebration,” they agreed, “for there would be a riot.”
6 Jesus now proceeded to Bethany, to the home of Simon the leper. 7 While he was eating, a woman came in with a bottle of very expensive perfume and poured it over his head.
8-9 The disciples were indignant. “What a waste of good money,” they said. “Why, she could have sold it for a fortune and given it to the poor.”
10 Jesus knew what they were thinking and said, “Why are you criticizing her? For she has done a good thing to me. 11 You will always have the poor among you, but you won’t always have me. 12 She has poured this perfume on me to prepare my body for burial. 13 And she will always be remembered for this deed. The story of what she has done will be told throughout the whole world, wherever the Good News is preached.”
14 Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve apostles, went to the chief priests 15 and asked, “How much will you pay me to get Jesus into your hands?” And they gave him thirty silver coins. 16 From that time on, Judas watched for an opportunity to betray Jesus to them.
17 On the first day of the Passover ceremonies, when bread made with yeast was purged from every Jewish home, the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where shall we plan to eat the Passover?”
18 He replied, “Go into the city and see Mr. So-and-So, and tell him, ‘Our Master says, my time has come, and I will eat the Passover meal with my disciples at your house.’” 19 So the disciples did as he told them and prepared the supper there.
20-21 That evening as he sat eating with the Twelve, he said, “One of you will betray me.”
22 Sorrow chilled their hearts, and each one asked, “Am I the one?”
23 He replied, “It is the one I served first.[b] 24 For I must die[c] just as was prophesied, but woe to the man by whom I am betrayed. Far better for that one if he had never been born.”
25 Judas, too, had asked him, “Rabbi, am I the one?” And Jesus had told him, “Yes.”
26 As they were eating, Jesus took a small loaf of bread and blessed it and broke it apart and gave it to the disciples and said, “Take it and eat it, for this is my body.”
27 And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks for it and gave it to them and said, “Each one drink from it, 28 for this is my blood, sealing the new covenant. It is poured out to forgive the sins of multitudes. 29 Mark my words—I will not drink this wine again until the day I drink it new with you in my Father’s Kingdom.”
30 And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
31 Then Jesus said to them, “Tonight you will all desert me. For it is written in the Scriptures[d] that God will smite the Shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered. 32 But after I have been brought back to life again, I will go to Galilee and meet you there.”
33 Peter declared, “If everyone else deserts you, I won’t.”
34 Jesus told him, “The truth is that this very night, before the cock crows at dawn, you will deny me three times!”
35 “I would die first!” Peter insisted. And all the other disciples said the same thing.
36 Then Jesus brought them to a garden grove, Gethsemane, and told them to sit down and wait while he went on ahead to pray. 37 He took Peter with him and Zebedee’s two sons James and John, and began to be filled with anguish and despair.
38 Then he told them, “My soul is crushed with horror and sadness to the point of death . . . stay here . . . stay awake with me.”
39 He went forward a little, and fell face downward on the ground, and prayed, “My Father! If it is possible, let this cup be taken away from me. But I want your will, not mine.”
40 Then he returned to the three disciples and found them asleep. “Peter,” he called, “couldn’t you even stay awake with me one hour? 41 Keep alert and pray. Otherwise temptation will overpower you. For the spirit indeed is willing, but how weak the body is!”
42 Again he left them and prayed, “My Father! If this cup cannot go away until I drink it all, your will be done.”
43 He returned to them again and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy, 44 so he went back to prayer the third time, saying the same things again.
45 Then he came to the disciples and said, “Sleep on now and take your rest . . . but no! The time has come! I am[e] betrayed into the hands of evil men! 46 Up! Let’s be going! Look! Here comes the man who is betraying me!”
47 At that very moment while he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived with a great crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent by the Jewish leaders. 48 Judas had told them to arrest the man he greeted, for that would be the one they were after. 49 So now Judas came straight to Jesus and said, “Hello, Master!” and embraced[f] him in friendly fashion.
50 Jesus said, “My friend, go ahead and do what you have come for.” Then the others grabbed him.
51 One of the men with Jesus pulled out a sword and slashed off the ear of the high priest’s servant.
52 “Put away your sword,” Jesus told him. “Those using swords will get killed. 53 Don’t you realize that I could ask my Father for thousands of angels to protect us, and he would send them instantly? 54 But if I did, how would the Scriptures be fulfilled that describe what is happening now?” 55 Then Jesus spoke to the crowd. “Am I some dangerous criminal,” he asked, “that you had to arm yourselves with swords and clubs before you could arrest me? I was with you teaching daily in the Temple and you didn’t stop me then. 56 But this is all happening to fulfill the words of the prophets as recorded in the Scriptures.”
At that point, all the disciples deserted him and fled.
57 Then the mob led him to the home of Caiaphas, the high priest, where all the Jewish leaders were gathering. 58 Meanwhile, Peter was following far to the rear, and came to the courtyard of the high priest’s house and went in and sat with the soldiers, and waited to see what was going to be done to Jesus.
59 The chief priests and, in fact, the entire Jewish Supreme Court assembled there and looked for witnesses who would lie about Jesus, in order to build a case against him that would result in a death sentence. 60-61 But even though they found many who agreed to be false witnesses, these always contradicted each other.
Finally two men were found who declared, “This man said, ‘I am able to destroy the Temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’”
62 Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, “Well, what about it? Did you say that, or didn’t you?” 63 But Jesus remained silent.
Then the high priest said to him, “I demand in the name of the living God that you tell us whether you claim to be the Messiah, the Son of God.”
64 “Yes,” Jesus said, “I am. And in the future you will see me, the Messiah,[g] sitting at the right hand of God and returning on the clouds of heaven.”
65-66 Then the high priest tore at his own clothing, shouting, “Blasphemy! What need have we for other witnesses? You have all heard him say it! What is your verdict?”
They shouted, “Death!—Death!—Death!”
67 Then they spat in his face and struck him and some slapped him, 68 saying, “Prophesy to us, you Messiah! Who struck you that time?”
69 Meanwhile, as Peter was sitting in the courtyard, a girl came over and said to him, “You were with Jesus, for both of you are from Galilee.”[h]
70 But Peter denied it loudly. “I don’t even know what you are talking about,” he angrily declared.
71 Later, out by the gate, another girl noticed him and said to those standing around, “This man was with Jesus—from Nazareth.”
72 Again Peter denied it, this time with an oath. “I don’t even know the man,” he said.
73 But after a while the men who had been standing there came over to him and said, “We know you are one of his disciples, for we can tell by your Galilean[i] accent.”
74 Peter began to curse and swear. “I don’t even know the man,” he said.
And immediately the cock crowed. 75 Then Peter remembered what Jesus had said, “Before the cock crows, you will deny me three times.” And he went away, crying bitterly.

26 Now it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these sayings, that He said to His disciples, 2 (B)“You know that after two days is the Passover, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified.”
3 (C)Then the chief priests, [a]the scribes, and the elders of the people assembled at the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, 4 and (D)plotted to take Jesus by [b]trickery and kill Him. 5 But they said, “Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar among the (E)people.”
The Anointing at Bethany(F)
6 And when Jesus was in (G)Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, 7 a woman came to Him having an alabaster flask of very costly fragrant oil, and she poured it on His head as He sat at the table. 8 (H)But when His disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying, “Why this waste? 9 For this fragrant oil might have been sold for much and given to the poor.”
10 But when Jesus was aware of it, He said to them, “Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a good work for Me. 11 (I)For you have the poor with you always, but (J)Me you do not have always. 12 For in pouring this fragrant oil on My body, she did it for My (K)burial. 13 Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her.”
Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus(L)
14 (M)Then one of the twelve, called (N)Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15 and said, (O)“What are you willing to give me if I deliver Him to you?” And they counted out to him thirty pieces of silver. 16 So from that time he sought opportunity to betray Him.
Jesus Celebrates Passover with His Disciples(P)
17 (Q)Now on the first day of the Feast of the Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying to Him, “Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?”
18 And He said, “Go into the city to a certain man, and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, (R)“My time is at hand; I will keep the Passover at your house with My disciples.” ’ ”
19 So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them; and they prepared the Passover.
20 (S)When evening had come, He sat down with the twelve. 21 Now as they were eating, He said, “Assuredly, I say to you, one of you will (T)betray Me.”
22 And they were exceedingly sorrowful, and each of them began to say to Him, “Lord, is it I?”
23 He answered and said, (U)“He who dipped his hand with Me in the dish will betray Me. 24 The Son of Man indeed goes just (V)as it is written of Him, but (W)woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! (X)It would have been good for that man if he had not been born.”
25 Then Judas, who was betraying Him, answered and said, “Rabbi, is it I?”
He said to him, “You have said it.”
Jesus Institutes the Lord’s Supper(Y)

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(AJ)

32 But after I have been raised, (AN)I will go before you to Galilee.”
33 Peter answered and said to Him, “Even if all are [g]made to stumble because of You, I will never be made to stumble.”
34 Jesus said to him, (AO)“Assuredly, I say to you that this night, before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.”
35 Peter said to Him, “Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!”
And so said all the disciples.
The Prayer in the Garden(AP)
36 (AQ)Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to the disciples, “Sit here while I go and pray over there.” 37 And He took with Him Peter and (AR)the two sons of Zebedee, and He began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed. 38 Then He said to them, (AS)“My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch with Me.”
39 He went a little farther and fell on His face, and (AT)prayed, saying, (AU)“O My Father, if it is possible, (AV)let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, (AW)not as I will, but as You will.”
40 Then He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “What! Could you not watch with Me one hour? 41 (AX)Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. (AY)The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
42 Again, a second time, He went away and prayed, saying, “O My Father, [h]if this cup cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done.” 43 And He came and found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy.
44 So He left them, went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words. 45 Then He came to His disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, the hour [i]is at hand, and the Son of Man is being (AZ)betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise, let us be going. See, My betrayer is at hand.”
Betrayal and Arrest in Gethsemane(BA)
47 And (BB)while He was still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, with a great multitude with swords and clubs, came from the chief priests and elders of the people.
48 Now His betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the One; seize Him.” 49 Immediately he went up to Jesus and said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” (BC)and kissed Him.

Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and took Him. 51 And suddenly, (BE)one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword, struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.
52 But Jesus said to him, “Put your sword in its place, (BF)for all who take the sword will [j]perish by the sword. 53 Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with (BG)more than twelve legions of angels? 54 How then could the Scriptures be fulfilled, (BH)that it must happen thus?”
55 In that hour Jesus said to the multitudes, “Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs to take Me? I sat daily with you, teaching in the temple, and you did not seize Me. 56 But all this was done that the (BI)Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.”
Then (BJ)all the disciples forsook Him and fled.
Jesus Faces the Sanhedrin(BK)
57 (BL)And those who had laid hold of Jesus led Him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled. 58 But (BM)Peter followed Him at a distance to the high priest’s courtyard. And he went in and sat with the servants to see the end.
59 Now the chief priests, [k]the elders, and all the council sought (BN)false testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, 60 [l]but found none. Even though (BO)many false witnesses came forward, they found none. But at last (BP)two [m]false witnesses came forward 61 and said, “This fellow said, (BQ)‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and to build it in three days.’ ”
62 (BR)And the high priest arose and said to Him, “Do You answer nothing? What is it these men testify against You?” 63 But (BS)Jesus kept silent. And the high priest answered and said to Him, (BT)“I put You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God!”
64 Jesus said to him, “It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you, (BU)hereafter you will see the Son of Man (BV)sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven.”
65 (BW)Then the high priest tore his clothes, saying, “He has spoken blasphemy! What further need do we have of witnesses? Look, now you have heard His (BX)blasphemy! 66 What do you think?”
They answered and said, (BY)“He is deserving of death.”

Peter Denies Jesus, and Weeps Bitterly(CC)
69 (CD)Now Peter sat outside in the courtyard. And a servant girl came to him, saying, “You also were with Jesus of Galilee.”
70 But he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you are saying.”
71 And when he had gone out to the gateway, another girl saw him and said to those who were there, “This fellow also was with Jesus of Nazareth.”
72 But again he denied with an oath, “I do not know the Man!”
73 And a little later those who stood by came up and said to Peter, “Surely you also are one of them, for your (CE)speech betrays you.”
74 Then (CF)he began to [o]curse and [p]swear, saying, “I do not know the Man!”
Immediately a rooster crowed. 75 And Peter remembered the word of Jesus who had said to him, (CG)“Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” So he went out and wept bitterly.

26 Y ACONTECIÓ que, como hubo acabado Jesús todas estas palabras, dijo á sus discípulos:
2 Sabéis que dentro de dos días se hace la pascua, y el Hijo del hombre es entregado para ser crucificado.
3 Entonces los príncipes de los sacerdotes, y los escribas, y los ancianos del pueblo se juntaron al patio del pontífice, el cual se llamaba Caifás;
4 Y tuvieron consejo para prender por engaño á Jesús, y matarle.
5 Y decían: No en el día de la fiesta, porque no se haga alboroto en el pueblo.
6 Y estando Jesús en Bethania, en casa de Simón el leproso,
7 Vino á él una mujer, teniendo un vaso de alabastro de ungüento de gran precio, y lo derramó sobre la cabeza de él, estando sentado á la mesa.
8 Lo cual viendo sus discípulos, se enojaron, diciendo: ¿Por qué se pierde esto?
9 Porque esto se podía vender por gran precio, y darse á los pobres.
10 Y entendiéndolo Jesús, les dijo: ¿Por qué dais pena á esta mujer? Pues ha hecho conmigo buena obra.
11 Porque siempre tendréis pobres con vosotros, mas á mí no siempre me tendréis.
12 Porque echando este ungüento sobre mi cuerpo, para sepultarme lo ha hecho.
13 De cierto os digo, que donde quiera que este evangelio fuere predicado en todo el mundo, también será dicho para memoria de ella, lo que ésta ha hecho.
14 Entonces uno de los doce, que se llamaba Judas Iscariote, fué á los príncipes de los sacerdotes,
15 Y les dijo: ¿Qué me queréis dar, y yo os lo entregaré? Y ellos le señalaron treinta piezas de plata.

18 Y él dijo: Id á la ciudad á cierto hombre, y decidle: El Maestro dice: Mi tiempo está cerca; en tu casa haré la pascua con mis discípulos.
19 Y los discípulos hicieron como Jesús les mandó, y aderezaron la pascua.
20 Y como fué la tarde del día, se sentó á la mesa con los doce.
21 Y comiendo ellos, dijo: De cierto os digo, que uno de vosotros me ha de entregar.
22 Y entristecidos ellos en gran manera, comenzó cada uno de ellos á decirle: ¿Soy yo, Señor?
23 Entonces él respondiendo, dijo: El que mete la mano conmigo en el plato, ése me ha de entregar.
24 A la verdad el Hijo del hombre va, como está escrito de él, mas ¡ay de aquel hombre por quien el Hijo del hombre es entregado! bueno le fuera al tal hombre no haber nacido.
25 Entonces respondiendo Judas, que le entregaba, dijo. ¿Soy yo, Maestro? Dícele: Tú lo has dicho.
26 Y comiendo ellos, tomó Jesús el pan, y bendijo, y lo partió, y dió á sus discípulos, y dijo: Tomad, comed: esto es mi cuerpo.
27 Y tomando el vaso, y hechas gracias, les dió, diciendo: Bebed de él todos;
28 Porque esto es mi sangre del nuevo pacto, la cual es derramada por muchos para remisión de los pecados.
29 Y os digo, que desde ahora no beberé más de este fruto de la vid, hasta aquel día, cuando lo tengo de beber nuevo con vosotros en el reino de mi Padre.
30 Y habiendo cantado el himno, salieron al monte de las Olivas.
31 Entonces Jesús les dice: Todos vosotros seréis escandalizados en mí esta noche; porque escrito está: Heriré al Pastor, y las ovejas de la manada serán dispersas.
32 Mas después que haya resucitado, iré delante de vosotros á Galilea.
33 Y respondiendo Pedro, le dijo: Aunque todos sean escandalizados en ti, yo nunca seré escandalizado.
34 Jesús le dice: De cierto te digo que esta noche, antes que el gallo cante, me negarás tres veces.
35 Dícele Pedro: Aunque me sea menester morir contigo, no te negaré. Y todos los discípulos dijeron lo mismo.
36 Entonces llegó Jesús con ellos á la aldea que se llama Gethsemaní, y dice á sus discípulos: Sentaos aquí, hasta que vaya allí y ore.
37 Y tomando á Pedro, y á los dos hijos de Zebedeo, comenzó á entristecerse y á angustiarse en gran manera.
38 Entonces Jesús les dice: Mi alma está muy triste hasta la muerte; quedaos aquí, y velad conmigo.
39 Y yéndose un poco más adelante, se postró sobre su rostro, orando, y diciendo: Padre mío, si es posible, pase de mí este vaso; empero no como yo quiero, sino como tú.
40 Y vino á sus discípulos, y los halló durmiendo, y dijo á Pedro: ¿Así no habéis podido velar conmigo una hora?
41 Velad y orad, para que no entréis en tentación: el espíritu á la verdad está presto, mas la carne enferma.
42 Otra vez fué, segunda vez, y oró diciendo: Padre mío, si no puede este vaso pasar de mí sin que yo lo beba, hágase tu voluntad.
43 Y vino, y los halló otra vez durmiendo; porque los ojos de ellos estaban agravados.
44 Y dejándolos fuése de nuevo, y oró tercera vez, diciendo las mismas palabras.
45 Entonces vino á sus discípulos y díceles: Dormid ya, y descansad: he aquí ha llegado la hora, y el Hijo del hombre es entregado en manos de pecadores.
46 Levantaos, vamos: he aquí ha llegado el que me ha entregado.
47 Y hablando aún él, he aquí Judas, uno de los doce, vino, y con él mucha gente con espadas y con palos, de parte de los príncipes de los sacerdotes, y de los ancianos del pueblo.
48 Y el que le entregaba les había dado señal, diciendo: Al que yo besare, aquél es: prendedle.
49 Y luego que llegó á Jesús, dijo: Salve, Maestro. Y le besó.
50 Y Jesús le dijo: Amigo, ¿á qué vienes? Entonces llegaron, y echaron mano á Jesús, y le prendieron.
51 Y he aquí, uno de los que estaban con Jesús, extendiendo la mano, sacó su espada, é hiriendo á un siervo del pontífice, le quitó la oreja.
52 Entonces Jesús le dice: Vuelve tu espada á su lugar; porque todos los que tomaren espada, á espada perecerán.
53 ¿Acaso piensas que no puedo ahora orar á mi Padre, y él me daría más de doce legiones de ángeles?
54 ¿Cómo, pues, se cumplirían las Escrituras, que así conviene que sea hecho?
55 En aquella hora dijo Jesús á las gentes: ¿Como á ladrón habéis salido con espadas y con palos á prenderme? Cada día me sentaba con vosotros enseñando en el templo, y no me prendisteis.
56 Mas todo esto se hace, para que se cumplan las Escrituras de los profetas. Entonces todos los discípulos huyeron, dejándole.
57 Y ellos, prendido Jesús, le llevaron á Caifás pontífice, donde los escribas y los ancianos estaban juntos.
58 Mas Pedro le seguía de lejos hasta el patio del pontífice; y entrando dentro, estábase sentado con los criados, para ver el fin.
59 Y los príncipes de los sacerdotes, y los ancianos, y todo el consejo, buscaban falso testimonio contra Jesús, para entregarle á la muerte;
60 Y no lo hallaron, aunque muchos testigos falsos se llegaban; mas á la postre vinieron dos testigos falsos,
61 Que dijeron: Este dijo: Puedo derribar el templo de Dios, y en tres días reedificarlo.
62 Y levantándose el pontífice, le dijo: ¿No respondes nada? ¿qué testifican éstos contra ti?
63 Mas Jesús callaba. Respondiendo el pontífice, le dijo: Te conjuro por el Dios viviente, que nos digas si eres tú el Cristo, Hijo de Dios.
64 Jesús le dijo: Tú lo has dicho: y aun os digo, que desde ahora habéis de ver al Hijo del hombre sentado á la diestra de la potencia de Dios, y que viene en las nubes del cielo.
65 Entonces el pontífice rasgó sus vestidos, diciendo: Blasfemado ha: ¿qué más necesidad tenemos de testigos? He aquí, ahora habéis oído su blasfemia.
66 ¿Qué os parece? Y respondiendo ellos, dijeron: Culpado es de muerte.
67 Entonces le escupieron en el rostro, y le dieron de bofetadas; y otros le herían con mojicones,
68 Diciendo: Profetízanos tú, Cristo, quién es el que te ha herido.
69 Y Pedro estaba sentado fuera en el patio: y se llegó á él una criada, diciendo: Y tú con Jesús el Galileo estabas.
70 Mas él negó delante de todos, diciendo: No sé lo que dices.
71 Y saliendo él á la puerta, le vió otra, y dijo á los que estaban allí: También éste estaba con Jesús Nazareno.
72 Y negó otra vez con juramento: No conozco al hombre.
73 Y un poco después llegaron los que estaban por allí, y dijeron á Pedro: Verdaderamente también tú eres de ellos, porque aun tu habla te hace manifiesto.
74 Entonces comenzó á hacer imprecaciones, y á jurar, diciendo: No conozco al hombre. Y el gallo cantó luego.
75 Y se acordó Pedro de las palabras de Jesús, que le dijo: Antes que cante el gallo, me negarás tres veces. Y saliéndose fuera, lloró amargamente.
