The Plot to Kill Jesus
26 When Jesus had finished saying all these things, he said to his disciples, 2 “As you know, Passover begins in two days, and the Son of Man[a] will be handed over to be crucified.”
3 At that same time the leading priests and elders were meeting at the residence of Caiaphas, the high priest, 4 plotting how to capture Jesus secretly and kill him. 5 “But not during the Passover celebration,” they agreed, “or the people may riot.”
Jesus Anointed at Bethany
6 Meanwhile, Jesus was in Bethany at the home of Simon, a man who had previously had leprosy. 7 While he was eating,[b] a woman came in with a beautiful alabaster jar of expensive perfume and poured it over his head.
8 The disciples were indignant when they saw this. “What a waste!” they said. 9 “It could have been sold for a high price and the money given to the poor.”
10 But Jesus, aware of this, replied, “Why criticize this woman for doing such a good thing to me? 11 You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me. 12 She has poured this perfume on me to prepare my body for burial. 13 I tell you the truth, wherever the Good News is preached throughout the world, this woman’s deed will be remembered and discussed.”
Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus
14 Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve disciples, went to the leading priests 15 and asked, “How much will you pay me to betray Jesus to you?” And they gave him thirty pieces of silver. 16 From that time on, Judas began looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus.
The Last Supper
17 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do you want us to prepare the Passover meal for you?”
18 “As you go into the city,” he told them, “you will see a certain man. Tell him, ‘The Teacher says: My time has come, and I will eat the Passover meal with my disciples at your house.’” 19 So the disciples did as Jesus told them and prepared the Passover meal there.
20 When it was evening, Jesus sat down at the table[c] with the Twelve. 21 While they were eating, he said, “I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me.”
22 Greatly distressed, each one asked in turn, “Am I the one, Lord?”
23 He replied, “One of you who has just eaten from this bowl with me will betray me. 24 For the Son of Man must die, as the Scriptures declared long ago. But how terrible it will be for the one who betrays him. It would be far better for that man if he had never been born!”
25 Judas, the one who would betray him, also asked, “Rabbi, am I the one?”
And Jesus told him, “You have said it.”
26 As they were eating, Jesus took some bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Take this and eat it, for this is my body.”
27 And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them and said, “Each of you drink from it, 28 for this is my blood, which confirms the covenant[d] between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice to forgive the sins of many. 29 Mark my words—I will not drink wine again until the day I drink it new with you in my Father’s Kingdom.”
30 Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives.
Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial
31 On the way, Jesus told them, “Tonight all of you will desert me. For the Scriptures say,
‘God will strike[e] the Shepherd,
and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’
32 But after I have been raised from the dead, I will go ahead of you to Galilee and meet you there.”
33 Peter declared, “Even if everyone else deserts you, I will never desert you.”
34 Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, Peter—this very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny three times that you even know me.”
35 “No!” Peter insisted. “Even if I have to die with you, I will never deny you!” And all the other disciples vowed the same.
Jesus Prays in Gethsemane
36 Then Jesus went with them to the olive grove called Gethsemane, and he said, “Sit here while I go over there to pray.” 37 He took Peter and Zebedee’s two sons, James and John, and he became anguished and distressed. 38 He told them, “My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”
39 He went on a little farther and bowed with his face to the ground, praying, “My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.”
40 Then he returned to the disciples and found them asleep. He said to Peter, “Couldn’t you watch with me even one hour? 41 Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak!”
42 Then Jesus left them a second time and prayed, “My Father! If this cup cannot be taken away[f] unless I drink it, your will be done.” 43 When he returned to them again, he found them sleeping, for they couldn’t keep their eyes open.
44 So he went to pray a third time, saying the same things again. 45 Then he came to the disciples and said, “Go ahead and sleep. Have your rest. But look—the time has come. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Up, let’s be going. Look, my betrayer is here!”
Jesus Is Betrayed and Arrested
47 And even as Jesus said this, Judas, one of the twelve disciples, arrived with a crowd of men armed with swords and clubs. They had been sent by the leading priests and elders of the people. 48 The traitor, Judas, had given them a prearranged signal: “You will know which one to arrest when I greet him with a kiss.” 49 So Judas came straight to Jesus. “Greetings, Rabbi!” he exclaimed and gave him the kiss.
50 Jesus said, “My friend, go ahead and do what you have come for.”
Then the others grabbed Jesus and arrested him. 51 But one of the men with Jesus pulled out his sword and struck the high priest’s slave, slashing off his ear.
52 “Put away your sword,” Jesus told him. “Those who use the sword will die by the sword. 53 Don’t you realize that I could ask my Father for thousands[g] of angels to protect us, and he would send them instantly? 54 But if I did, how would the Scriptures be fulfilled that describe what must happen now?”
55 Then Jesus said to the crowd, “Am I some dangerous revolutionary, that you come with swords and clubs to arrest me? Why didn’t you arrest me in the Temple? I was there teaching every day. 56 But this is all happening to fulfill the words of the prophets as recorded in the Scriptures.” At that point, all the disciples deserted him and fled.
Jesus before the Council
57 Then the people who had arrested Jesus led him to the home of Caiaphas, the high priest, where the teachers of religious law and the elders had gathered. 58 Meanwhile, Peter followed him at a distance and came to the high priest’s courtyard. He went in and sat with the guards and waited to see how it would all end.
59 Inside, the leading priests and the entire high council[h] were trying to find witnesses who would lie about Jesus, so they could put him to death. 60 But even though they found many who agreed to give false witness, they could not use anyone’s testimony. Finally, two men came forward 61 who declared, “This man said, ‘I am able to destroy the Temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’”
62 Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, “Well, aren’t you going to answer these charges? What do you have to say for yourself?” 63 But Jesus remained silent. Then the high priest said to him, “I demand in the name of the living God—tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.”
64 Jesus replied, “You have said it. And in the future you will see the Son of Man seated in the place of power at God’s right hand[i] and coming on the clouds of heaven.”[j]
65 Then the high priest tore his clothing to show his horror and said, “Blasphemy! Why do we need other witnesses? You have all heard his blasphemy. 66 What is your verdict?”
“Guilty!” they shouted. “He deserves to die!”
67 Then they began to spit in Jesus’ face and beat him with their fists. And some slapped him, 68 jeering, “Prophesy to us, you Messiah! Who hit you that time?”
Peter Denies Jesus
69 Meanwhile, Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. A servant girl came over and said to him, “You were one of those with Jesus the Galilean.”
70 But Peter denied it in front of everyone. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said.
71 Later, out by the gate, another servant girl noticed him and said to those standing around, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.[k]”
72 Again Peter denied it, this time with an oath. “I don’t even know the man,” he said.
73 A little later some of the other bystanders came over to Peter and said, “You must be one of them; we can tell by your Galilean accent.”
74 Peter swore, “A curse on me if I’m lying—I don’t know the man!” And immediately the rooster crowed.
75 Suddenly, Jesus’ words flashed through Peter’s mind: “Before the rooster crows, you will deny three times that you even know me.” And he went away, weeping bitterly.

Plot to kill Jesus
26 When Jesus finished speaking all these words, he said to his disciples, 2 “You know that the Passover is two days from now. And the Human One[a] will be handed over to be crucified.”
3 Then the chief priests and elders of the people gathered in the courtyard of Caiaphas the high priest. 4 They were plotting to arrest Jesus by cunning tricks and to kill him. 5 But they agreed that it shouldn’t happen during the feast so there wouldn’t be an uproar among the people.
A woman pouring perfume on Jesus
6 When Jesus was at Bethany visiting the house of Simon, who had a skin disease, 7 a woman came to him with a vase made of alabaster containing very expensive perfume. She poured it on Jesus’ head while he was sitting at dinner. 8 Now when the disciples saw it they were angry and said, “Why this waste? 9 This perfume could have been sold for a lot of money and given to the poor.”
10 But Jesus knew what they were thinking. He said, “Why do you make trouble for the woman? She’s done a good thing for me. 11 You always have the poor with you, but you won’t always have me. 12 By pouring this perfume over my body she’s prepared me to be buried. 13 I tell you the truth that wherever in the whole world this good news is announced, what she’s done will also be told in memory of her.”
Judas betrays Jesus
14 Then one of the Twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15 and said, “What will you give me if I turn Jesus over to you?” They paid him thirty pieces of silver. 16 From that time on he was looking for an opportunity to turn him in.
Passover with the disciples
17 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus and said, “Where do you want us to prepare for you to eat the Passover meal?”
18 He replied, “Go into the city, to a certain man, and say, ‘The teacher says, “My time is near. I’m going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.”’” 19 The disciples did just as Jesus instructed them. They prepared the Passover.
20 That evening he took his place at the table with the twelve disciples. 21 As they were eating he said, “I assure you that one of you will betray me.”
22 Deeply saddened, each one said to him, “I’m not the one, am I, Lord?”
23 He replied, “The one who will betray me is the one who dips his hand with me into this bowl. 24 The Human One[b] goes to his death just as it is written about him. But how terrible it is for that person who betrays the Human One![c] It would have been better for him if he had never been born.”
25 Now Judas, who would betray him, replied, “It’s not me, is it, Rabbi?”
Jesus answered, “You said it.”
Last supper
26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, “Take and eat. This is my body.” 27 He took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from this, all of you. 28 This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many so that their sins may be forgiven. 29 I tell you, I won’t drink wine again until that day when I drink it in a new way with you in my Father’s kingdom.” 30 Then, after singing songs of praise, they went to the Mount of Olives.
Predictions about disciples leaving Jesus
31 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Tonight you will all fall away because of me. This is because it is written, I will hit the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will go off in all directions.[d] 32 But after I’m raised up, I’ll go before you to Galilee.”
33 Peter replied, “If everyone else stumbles because of you, I’ll never stumble.”
34 Jesus said to him, “I assure you that, before the rooster crows tonight, you will deny me three times.”
35 Peter said, “Even if I must die alongside you, I won’t deny you.” All the disciples said the same thing.
Jesus in prayer
36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane. He said to the disciples, “Stay here while I go and pray over there.” 37 When he took Peter and Zebedee’s two sons, he began to feel sad and anxious. 38 Then he said to them, “I’m very sad. It’s as if I’m dying. Stay here and keep alert with me.” 39 Then he went a short distance farther and fell on his face and prayed, “My Father, if it’s possible, take this cup of suffering away from me. However—not what I want but what you want.”
40 He came back to the disciples and found them sleeping. He said to Peter, “Couldn’t you stay alert one hour with me? 41 Stay alert and pray so that you won’t give in to temptation. The spirit is eager, but the flesh is weak.” 42 A second time he went away and prayed, “My Father, if it’s not possible that this cup be taken away unless I drink it, then let it be what you want.”
43 Again he came and found them sleeping. Their eyes were heavy with sleep. 44 But he left them and again went and prayed the same words for the third time. 45 Then he came to his disciples and said to them, “Will you sleep and rest all night? Look, the time has come for the Human One[e] to be betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Get up. Let’s go. Look, here comes my betrayer.”
Arrest
47 While Jesus was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, came. With him was a large crowd carrying swords and clubs. They had been sent by the chief priests and elders of the people. 48 His betrayer had given them a sign: “Arrest the man I kiss.” 49 Just then he came to Jesus and said, “Hello, Rabbi.” Then he kissed him.
50 But Jesus said to him, “Friend, do what you came to do.” Then they came and grabbed Jesus and arrested him.
51 One of those with Jesus reached for his sword. Striking the high priest’s slave, he cut off his ear. 52 Then Jesus said to him, “Put the sword back into its place. All those who use the sword will die by the sword. 53 Or do you think that I’m not able to ask my Father and he will send to me more than twelve battle groups[f] of angels right away? 54 But if I did that, how would the scriptures be fulfilled that say this must happen?” 55 Then Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come with swords and clubs to arrest me, like a thief? Day after day, I sat in the temple teaching, but you didn’t arrest me. 56 But all this has happened so that what the prophets said in the scriptures might be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples left Jesus and ran away.
Jesus before the council
57 Those who arrested Jesus led him to Caiaphas the high priest. The legal experts and the elders had gathered there. 58 Peter followed him from a distance until he came to the high priest’s courtyard. He entered that area and sat outside with the officers to see how it would turn out.
59 The chief priests and the whole council were looking for false testimony against Jesus so that they could put him to death. 60 They didn’t find anything they could use from the many false witnesses who were willing to come forward. But finally they found two 61 who said, “This man said, ‘I can destroy God’s temple and rebuild it in three days.’”
62 Then the high priest stood and said to Jesus, “Aren’t you going to respond to the testimony these people have brought against you?”
63 But Jesus was silent.
The high priest said, “By the living God, I demand that you tell us whether you are the Christ, God’s Son.”
64 “You said it,” Jesus replied. “But I say to you that from now on you’ll see the Human One[g] sitting on the right side of the Almighty[h] and coming on the heavenly clouds.”[i]
65 Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, “He’s insulting God! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, you’ve heard his insult against God. 66 What do you think?”
And they answered, “He deserves to die!” 67 Then they spit in his face and beat him. They hit him 68 and said, “Prophesy for us, Christ! Who hit you?”
Peter’s denial
69 Meanwhile, Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. A servant woman came and said to him, “You were also with Jesus the Galilean.”
70 But he denied it in front of all of them, saying, “I don’t know what you are talking about.”
71 When he went over to the gate, another woman saw him and said to those who were there, “This man was with Jesus, the man from Nazareth.”
72 With a solemn pledge, he denied it again, saying, “I don’t know the man.”
73 A short time later those standing there came and said to Peter, “You must be one of them. The way you talk gives you away.”
74 Then he cursed and swore, “I don’t know the man!” At that very moment the rooster crowed. 75 Peter remembered Jesus’ words, “Before the rooster crows you will deny me three times.”And Peter went out and cried uncontrollably.

Jezus vertelt opnieuw wat er met Hem gaat gebeuren
26 Toen Jezus dit had verteld, zei Hij tegen zijn leerlingen: 2 "Jullie weten dat het over twee dagen Pasen is. Dan wordt de Mensenzoon gevangen genomen en gekruisigd."
3 En de leiders van de priesters, de wetgeleerden en de leiders van het volk vergaderden met elkaar in het paleis van de hogepriester Kajafas. 4 Ze maakten een plan om Jezus met een list gevangen te nemen en te doden. 5 Maar ze zeiden: "Laten we het niet op het feest doen. Anders komen er nog rellen onder het volk."
Een vrouw zalft Jezus' hoofd
6 Op een dag was Jezus in Betanië, in het huis van Simon. (Simon was door Jezus genezen van een besmettelijke huidziekte.) 7 Er kwam een vrouw naar Hem toe. Ze had een kostbaar kruikje bij zich met dure parfum: echte mirre.[a] Ze goot de parfum over zijn hoofd uit terwijl Hij aan tafel zat te eten. 8 Toen zijn leerlingen dat zagen, werden ze boos. Ze zeiden tegen elkaar: 9 "Wat een verspilling! Die mirre hadden we voor veel geld kunnen verkopen! Dan hadden we het geld aan de arme mensen kunnen geven!" 10 Jezus merkte het. Hij zei tegen hen: "Waarom laten jullie die vrouw haar gang niet gaan? Want ze heeft iets goeds voor Mij gedaan. 11 Want arme mensen zullen altijd wel bij jullie zijn. Maar Mij hebben jullie niet altijd bij je. 12 Toen zij die mirre over Mij heen goot, deed ze dat als voorbereiding op mijn begrafenis.[b] 13 Luister goed! Ik zeg jullie: overal in de hele wereld waar het goede nieuws zal worden verteld, zal ook verteld worden wat zij heeft gedaan."
Judas verraadt Jezus
14 Toen ging één van de twaalf leerlingen, Judas Iskariot, naar de leiders van de priesters. 15 Hij vroeg: "Wat willen jullie mij betalen? Dan zal ik ervoor zorgen dat jullie Jezus gevangen kunnen nemen." Ze gaven hem 30 zilverstukken.[c] 16 Vanaf dat moment probeerde Judas een moment te vinden om Jezus aan hen uit te leveren.
Het Paasfeest
17 Op de eerste dag van het Feest van de Ongegiste Broden[d] kwamen de leerlingen Jezus vragen: "Waar wilt U de paasmaaltijd eten? Dan gaan we alles klaarmaken." 18 Hij zei: "Ga naar de stad, naar die-en-die. Zeg tegen hem: 'De meester zegt: 'Het is mijn tijd. Ik wil met mijn leerlingen bij jou het Paasfeest vieren.' " 19 De leerlingen deden wat Jezus had gezegd en ze maakten het paaslam klaar.
20 Toen het avond was geworden, ging Hij met de twaalf leerlingen aan tafel. 21 Tijdens de maaltijd zei hij: "Luister goed! Ik zeg jullie dat één van jullie Mij zal verraden." 22 Daar werden ze heel bedroefd over. En ze vroegen Hem om de beurt: "Ben ik dat, Heer?" 23 Hij antwoordde: "De man die tegelijk met Mij zijn brood in de schotel heeft ingedoopt, die zal Mij verraden. 24 De Mensenzoon zal sterven op de manier die al van tevoren in de Boeken is opgeschreven. Maar het zal slecht aflopen met de man die Hem heeft verraden. Het zou beter voor hem zijn geweest als hij niet was geboren." 25 Judas, de verrader, antwoordde: "Ben ik dat, Meester?" Jezus antwoordde: "Je zegt het zelf."
26 Toen ze aan het eten waren, nam Jezus een brood. Hij zegende het, brak het in stukken en gaf het aan zijn leerlingen. Hij zei: "Neem dit en eet het. Het is mijn lichaam." 27 Toen nam Hij de beker met wijn. Hij dankte God ervoor en gaf hem aan de leerlingen. Hij zei: "Drink hier allemaal van. 28 Deze wijn is mijn bloed waarmee God een nieuw verbond sluit met de mensen.[e] Mijn bloed wordt uitgegoten om de mensen te kunnen vergeven dat ze ongehoorzaam zijn aan God. 29 Maar Ik zeg jullie dat Ik vanaf nu geen wijn meer zal drinken, totdat Ik samen met jullie nieuwe wijn zal drinken in het Koninkrijk van mijn Vader." 30 En nadat ze de dankliederen hadden gezongen, vertrokken ze naar de Olijfberg.
Jezus waarschuwt Petrus
31 Toen zei Jezus tegen hen: "Vannacht zullen jullie Mij allemaal in de steek laten. Want er staat in de Boeken: 'Ik zal de herder doden en de schapen van de kudde zullen uit elkaar gejaagd worden.' 32 Maar Ik zal weer uit de dood opstaan. Dan zal Ik voor jullie uit reizen naar Galilea." 33 Petrus antwoordde: "Ik zal U echt nooit in de steek laten! Zelfs niet als alle anderen dat wél doen!" 34 Jezus zei tegen hem: "Luister goed! Ik zeg je: voordat de haan kraait zul je vannacht drie keer zeggen dat je Mij niet kent." 35 Petrus zei tegen Hem: "Ik zal nooit zeggen dat ik U niet ken! Zelfs niet als ze mij met U zouden doden!" De andere leerlingen zeiden hetzelfde.
In de tuin van Getsémané
36 Jezus ging met hen naar een tuin die Getsémané (= olijfpers) heet. Daar zei Hij tegen de leerlingen: "Gaan jullie hier zitten. Ik ga een eindje verderop bidden." 37 Hij nam Petrus en de twee zonen van Zebedeüs met Zich mee. En Hij begon te bidden. Hij was heel erg bang en bedroefd. 38 Toen zei Hij tegen hen: "Ik ben verschrikkelijk bedroefd. Ik ga zowat dood van verdriet. Blijven jullie hier. Blijf wakker en wacht op Mij." 39 Hijzelf liep een eindje verder. Daar knielde Hij neer met zijn gezicht tot op de grond en bad: "Vader, als het mogelijk is, laat Mij dan alstublieft niet de wijnbeker van uw straf leeg hoeven te drinken.[f] Maar Ik zal niet doen wat Ik Zelf wil, maar wat Ú wil."
40 Toen ging Hij naar de drie leerlingen terug. Hij zag dat ze in slaap waren gevallen. Hij zei tegen Petrus: "Kon je niet eens één uur met Mij wakker blijven? 41 Blijf wakker en bid dat je niet verleid wordt om het verkeerde te doen. Je wíl wel graag het goede doen, maar dat is wel heel erg moeilijk."
42 Daarna ging Hij voor de tweede keer weg en bad: "Vader, als het echt nodig is dat Ik de wijnbeker van uw straf leegdrink, zal Ik het doen omdat U het wil." 43 Toen Hij terug kwam, merkte Hij dat ze weer in slaap waren gevallen. Want hun ogen waren zwaar van de slaap. 44 Hij liet hen daar en ging opnieuw weg en bad voor de derde keer. Hij bad hetzelfde als de vorige keren. 45 Toen kwam Hij bij zijn leerlingen terug en zei tegen hen: "Slaap nu maar en rust uit. Het is genoeg geweest. Nu komt het moment dat de Mensenzoon door slechte mensen gevangen genomen zal worden."
Jezus wordt gevangen genomen
46 Jezus zei: "Sta op, we gaan. Kijk, daar komt de man die Mij verraadt." 47 Op datzelfde moment kwam Judas aanlopen, één van de twaalf leerlingen. Hij bracht een grote groep mannen met zwaarden en knuppels mee. Ze waren gestuurd door de leiders van de priesters en de leiders van het volk. 48 Judas had een teken met hen afgesproken. Hij had gezegd: "De man die ik groet met een kus, díe moet je grijpen." 49 Hij liep recht op Jezus af. Hij zei: "Dag Meester" en gaf Hem een kus. 50 Maar Jezus zei tegen hem: "Vriend, wat kom je hier doen?" Toen grepen de mannen Jezus. 51 Eén van de leerlingen trok zijn zwaard. Hij raakte de slaaf van de hogepriester en hakte het oor van de man eraf. 52 Maar Jezus zei tegen hem: "Doe je zwaard weg. Want mensen die geweld gebruiken, zullen door geweld sterven. 53 Of denken jullie dat Ik mijn Vader niet om hulp kan vragen? Dan zou Hij Mij onmiddellijk wel twaalf legers engelen sturen om Mij te helpen. 54 Maar hoe zou dan werkelijkheid kunnen worden wat er in de Boeken staat? Die zeggen dat het op deze manier moet gebeuren."
55 Toen zei Jezus tegen de mannen: "Jullie doen alsof jullie een moordenaar gevangen moeten nemen, met die zwaarden en die knuppels. Elke dag zat Ik bij jullie in de tempel les te geven. Maar toen hebben jullie Mij niet gevangen genomen. 56 Maar het gebeurt allemaal op deze manier, omdat het vroeger zo in de Boeken van de profeten werd opgeschreven." Toen lieten alle leerlingen Hem in de steek en sloegen op de vlucht.
Jezus voor de Vergadering
57 De mannen die Jezus gevangen hadden genomen, brachten Hem naar de hogepriester Kajafas. Daar waren de wetgeleerden en leiders bij elkaar gekomen. 58 Petrus volgde Hem op een afstand. Hij liep mee tot op de binnenplaats van het paleis van de hogepriester. Daar ging hij tussen de dienaren zitten om te zien hoe het zou aflopen.
59 De leiders van de priesters en de leiders van het volk zochten iets om Jezus ter dood te kunnen veroordelen. Daarom kwamen ze met gelogen beschuldigingen. 60 Er waren genoeg mensen die leugens over Hem kwamen vertellen. Maar voor geen van die beschuldigingen konden ze Jezus de doodstraf geven. 61 Tenslotte kwamen er twee mannen die ook iets zeiden wat niet helemaal waar was: "Hij heeft gezegd dat Hij de tempel van God kan afbreken en in drie dagen weer opbouwen." 62 Toen stond de hogepriester op en vroeg: "Waarom antwoord Je niets op deze beschuldiging?" 63 Maar Jezus zweeg. De hogepriester zei tegen Hem: "Ik beveel Je bij de levende God dat Je moet zeggen of Je de Messias bent, de Zoon van God." 64 Jezus zei tegen hem: "U zegt het zelf. Maar Ik zeg u, vanaf dit moment zult u de Mensenzoon zien zitten naast Degene die de macht heeft, en u zult Hem zien komen op de wolken." 65 Toen scheurde de hogepriester zijn kleren en hij riep uit: "Hij heeft God beledigd! We hebben verder geen beschuldigingen meer nodig! Jullie hebben zelf gehoord dat Hij God heeft beledigd! Wat vinden jullie?" 66 Ze antwoordden: "Hij verdient de doodstraf!" 67 Ze spuugden Hem in zijn gezicht en stompten Hem. 68 Anderen sloegen Hem in zijn gezicht en zeiden: "Profeteer eens, Messias: wie heeft Je geslagen?"
Petrus zegt dat hij Jezus niet kent
69 Petrus zat buiten op de binnenplaats. Er kwam een slavin naar hem toe. Ze zei: "Jij was ook bij Jezus, de Galileër." 70 Maar hij antwoordde: "Ik weet niet waar je het over hebt." Iedereen hoorde hem dat zeggen. 71 Toen hij naar de poort ging, zag een andere slaaf hem. De slaaf zei tegen de mannen die daar ook stonden: "Die man was ook bij Jezus van Nazaret." 72 Maar Petrus zwoer: "Ik zweer dat ik die Man niet ken." 73 Even later kwamen de mannen die daar stonden naar Petrus toe en zeiden: "Ja hoor, jij hoort ook bij Hem, we horen het aan de manier waarop je praat." 74 Toen zei hij opnieuw: "Ik zweer dat ik die Man helemaal niet ken!" 75 Op dat moment kraaide er een haan. Petrus herinnerde zich opeens wat Jezus had gezegd: 'Voordat de haan kraait, zul je drie keer hebben gezegd dat je Mij niet kent.' En hij liep naar buiten en begon vreselijk te huilen.

- Mattheüs 26:28 God had eeuwen geleden al een verbond gesloten met Abraham en later met het hele volk dat uit hem was ontstaan. Lees Genesis 15:7-20 en Exodus 6:1-6. Dat was het oude verbond. Het nieuwe verbond van Jezus' dood is de vervulling van de beloften van het oude verbond.
- Mattheüs 26:39 Jezus ging de straf op Zich nemen die wíj verdiend hadden met onze ongehoorzaamheid aan God. Met de 'wijnbeker' wordt in de bijbel vaak Gods straf bedoeld. Lees bijvoorbeeld Jeremia 25:15.

The Plot Against Jesus(A)
26 When Jesus had finished saying all these things,(B) he said to his disciples, 2 “As you know, the Passover(C) is two days away—and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.”
3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled(D) in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas,(E) 4 and they schemed to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him.(F) 5 “But not during the festival,” they said, “or there may be a riot(G) among the people.”
Jesus Anointed at Bethany(H)(I)
6 While Jesus was in Bethany(J) in the home of Simon the Leper, 7 a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on his head as he was reclining at the table.
8 When the disciples saw this, they were indignant. “Why this waste?” they asked. 9 “This perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor.”
10 Aware of this, Jesus said to them, “Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 11 The poor you will always have with you,[a](K) but you will not always have me. 12 When she poured this perfume on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial.(L) 13 Truly I tell you, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”
Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus(M)
14 Then one of the Twelve—the one called Judas Iscariot(N)—went to the chief priests 15 and asked, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver him over to you?” So they counted out for him thirty pieces of silver.(O) 16 From then on Judas watched for an opportunity to hand him over.
The Last Supper(P)(Q)(R)
17 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread,(S) the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover?”(T)
18 He replied, “Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, ‘The Teacher says: My appointed time(U) is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.’” 19 So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover.
20 When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the Twelve. 21 And while they were eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.”(V)
22 They were very sad and began to say to him one after the other, “Surely you don’t mean me, Lord?”
23 Jesus replied, “The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me.(W) 24 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him.(X) But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”
25 Then Judas, the one who would betray him,(Y) said, “Surely you don’t mean me, Rabbi?”(Z)
Jesus answered, “You have said so.”
26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it(AA) and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.”
27 Then he took a cup,(AB) and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. 28 This is my blood of the[b] covenant,(AC) which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.(AD) 29 I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you(AE) in my Father’s kingdom.”
30 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.(AF)
Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(AG)
31 Then Jesus told them, “This very night you will all fall away on account of me,(AH) for it is written:
32 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”(AJ)
33 Peter replied, “Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will.”
34 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.”(AK)
35 But Peter declared, “Even if I have to die with you,(AL) I will never disown you.” And all the other disciples said the same.
Gethsemane(AM)
36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee(AN) along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow(AO) to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”(AP)
39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup(AQ) be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”(AR)
40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me(AS) for one hour?” he asked Peter. 41 “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.(AT) The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
42 He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.”(AU)
43 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. 44 So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.
45 Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour(AV) has come, and the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”
Jesus Arrested(AW)
47 While he was still speaking, Judas,(AX) one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.” 49 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Greetings, Rabbi!”(AY) and kissed him.
50 Jesus replied, “Do what you came for, friend.”[d](AZ)
Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him. 51 With that, one of Jesus’ companions reached for his sword,(BA) drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.(BB)
52 “Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.(BC) 53 Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?(BD) 54 But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled(BE) that say it must happen in this way?”
55 In that hour Jesus said to the crowd, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching,(BF) and you did not arrest me. 56 But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled.”(BG) Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.
Jesus Before the Sanhedrin(BH)
57 Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas(BI) the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled. 58 But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest.(BJ) He entered and sat down with the guards(BK) to see the outcome.
59 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin(BL) were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. 60 But they did not find any, though many false witnesses(BM) came forward.
Finally two(BN) came forward 61 and declared, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’”(BO)
62 Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 63 But Jesus remained silent.(BP)
The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath(BQ) by the living God:(BR) Tell us if you are the Messiah,(BS) the Son of God.”(BT)
64 “You have said so,”(BU) Jesus replied. “But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One(BV) and coming on the clouds of heaven.”[e](BW)
65 Then the high priest tore his clothes(BX) and said, “He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. 66 What do you think?”
“He is worthy of death,”(BY) they answered.
67 Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists.(BZ) Others slapped him 68 and said, “Prophesy to us, Messiah. Who hit you?”(CA)
Peter Disowns Jesus(CB)
69 Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him. “You also were with Jesus of Galilee,” she said.
70 But he denied it before them all. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said.
71 Then he went out to the gateway, where another servant girl saw him and said to the people there, “This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth.”
72 He denied it again, with an oath: “I don’t know the man!”
73 After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, “Surely you are one of them; your accent gives you away.”
74 Then he began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know the man!”
Immediately a rooster crowed. 75 Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: “Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.”(CC) And he went outside and wept bitterly.
