Chapter 26

The Conspiracy Against Jesus. [a]When Jesus finished all these words,[b] he said to his disciples, (A)“You know that in two days’ time it will be Passover, and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.” [c]Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, (B)and they consulted together to arrest Jesus by treachery and put him to death. But they said, “Not during the festival,[d] that there may not be a riot among the people.”

The Anointing at Bethany.[e] (C)Now when Jesus was in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, a woman came up to him with an alabaster jar of costly perfumed oil, and poured it on his head while he was reclining at table. When the disciples saw this, they were indignant and said, “Why this waste? It could have been sold for much, and the money given to the poor.” 10 Since Jesus knew this, he said to them, “Why do you make trouble for the woman? She has done a good thing for me. 11 (D)The poor you will always have with you; but you will not always have me. 12 [f]In pouring this perfumed oil upon my body, she did it to prepare me for burial. 13 Amen, I say to you, wherever this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be spoken of, in memory of her.”

The Betrayal by Judas. 14 (E)Then one of the Twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot,[g] went to the chief priests 15 [h](F)and said, “What are you willing to give me if I hand him over to you?” They paid him thirty pieces of silver, 16 and from that time on he looked for an opportunity to hand him over.

Preparations for the Passover. 17 (G)On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread,[i] the disciples approached Jesus and said, “Where do you want us to prepare for you to eat the Passover?”(H) 18 [j]He said, “Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, ‘The teacher says, “My appointed time draws near; in your house I shall celebrate the Passover with my disciples.”’” 19 The disciples then did as Jesus had ordered, and prepared the Passover.

The Betrayer. 20 When it was evening, he reclined at table with the Twelve. 21 And while they were eating, he said, “Amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me.”[k] 22 Deeply distressed at this, they began to say to him one after another, “Surely it is not I, Lord?” 23 He said in reply, “He who has dipped his hand into the dish with me is the one who will betray me. 24 [l](I)The Son of Man indeed goes, as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed. It would be better for that man if he had never been born.” 25 [m]Then Judas, his betrayer, said in reply, “Surely it is not I, Rabbi?” He answered, “You have said so.”

The Lord’s Supper. 26 [n](J)While they were eating, Jesus took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and giving it to his disciples said, “Take and eat; this is my body.”[o](K) 27 Then he took a cup, gave thanks,[p] and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you, 28 (L)for this is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed on behalf of many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 [q]I tell you, from now on I shall not drink this fruit of the vine until the day when I drink it with you new in the kingdom of my Father.” 30 [r]Then, after singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Peter’s Denial Foretold. 31 (M)Then Jesus said to them, “This night all of you will have your faith in me shaken,[s] for it is written:(N)

‘I will strike the shepherd,
    and the sheep of the flock will be dispersed’;

32 but after I have been raised up, I shall go before you to Galilee.” 33 Peter said to him in reply, “Though all may have their faith in you shaken, mine will never be.” 34 [t](O)Jesus said to him, “Amen, I say to you, this very night before the cock crows, you will deny me three times.”(P) 35 Peter said to him, “Even though I should have to die with you, I will not deny you.” And all the disciples spoke likewise.

The Agony in the Garden. 36 [u](Q)Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane,[v] and he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.”(R) 37 (S)He took along Peter and the two sons of Zebedee,[w] and began to feel sorrow and distress. 38 (T)Then he said to them, “My soul is sorrowful even to death.[x] Remain here and keep watch with me.” 39 (U)He advanced a little and fell prostrate in prayer, saying, “My Father,[y] if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet, not as I will, but as you will.” 40 When he returned to his disciples he found them asleep. He said to Peter, “So you could not keep watch with me for one hour? 41 Watch and pray that you may not undergo the test.[z] The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 42 [aa](V)Withdrawing a second time, he prayed again, “My Father, if it is not possible that this cup pass without my drinking it, your will be done!” 43 Then he returned once more and found them asleep, for they could not keep their eyes open. 44 He left them and withdrew again and prayed a third time, saying the same thing again. 45 (W)Then he returned to his disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? Behold, the hour is at hand when the Son of Man is to be handed over to sinners. 46 Get up, let us go. Look, my betrayer is at hand.”

The Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus. 47 (X)While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived, accompanied by a large crowd, with swords and clubs, who had come from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48 His betrayer had arranged a sign with them, saying, “The man I shall kiss is the one; arrest him.” 49 Immediately he went over to Jesus and said, “Hail, Rabbi!”[ab] and he kissed him. 50 Jesus answered him, “Friend, do what you have come for.” Then stepping forward they laid hands on Jesus and arrested him. 51 And behold, one of those who accompanied Jesus put his hand to his sword, drew it, and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his ear. 52 Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its sheath, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword. 53 Do you think that I cannot call upon my Father and he will not provide me at this moment with more than twelve legions of angels? 54 But then how would the scriptures be fulfilled which say that it must come to pass in this way?” 55 [ac]At that hour Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to seize me? Day after day I sat teaching in the temple area, yet you did not arrest me. 56 (Y)But all this has come to pass that the writings of the prophets may be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples left him and fled.

Jesus Before the Sanhedrin.[ad] 57 (Z)Those who had arrested Jesus led him away to Caiaphas[ae] the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled. 58 Peter was following him at a distance as far as the high priest’s courtyard, and going inside he sat down with the servants to see the outcome. 59 The chief priests and the entire Sanhedrin[af] kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus in order to put him to death, 60 (AA)but they found none, though many false witnesses came forward. Finally two[ag] came forward 61 who stated, “This man said, ‘I can destroy the temple of God and within three days rebuild it.’” 62 The high priest rose and addressed him, “Have you no answer? What are these men testifying against you?” 63 (AB)But Jesus was silent.[ah] Then the high priest said to him, “I order you to tell us under oath before the living God whether you are the Messiah, the Son of God.” 64 (AC)Jesus said to him in reply, “You have said so.[ai] But I tell you:

From now on you will see ‘the Son of Man
    seated at the right hand of the Power’
    and ‘coming on the clouds of heaven.’”

65 Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has blasphemed![aj] What further need have we of witnesses? You have now heard the blasphemy; 66 what is your opinion?” They said in reply, “He deserves to die!” 67 [ak](AD)Then they spat in his face and struck him, while some slapped him, 68 saying, “Prophesy for us, Messiah: who is it that struck you?”

Peter’s Denial of Jesus. 69 (AE)Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. One of the maids came over to him and said, “You too were with Jesus the Galilean.” 70 [al]But he denied it in front of everyone, saying, “I do not know what you are talking about!” 71 As he went out to the gate, another girl saw him and said to those who were there, “This man was with Jesus the Nazorean.” 72 Again he denied it with an oath, “I do not know the man!” 73 [am]A little later the bystanders came over and said to Peter, “Surely you too are one of them; even your speech gives you away.” 74 At that he began to curse and to swear, “I do not know the man.” And immediately a cock crowed. 75 (AF)Then Peter remembered the word that Jesus had spoken: “Before the cock crows you will deny me three times.” He went out and began to weep bitterly.

  1. 26:1–28:20 The five books with alternating narrative and discourse (Mt 3:1–25:46) that give this gospel its distinctive structure lead up to the climactic events that are the center of Christian belief and the origin of the Christian church, the passion and resurrection of Jesus. In his passion narrative (Mt 26 and 27) Matthew follows his Marcan source closely but with omissions (e.g., Mk 14:51–52) and additions (e.g., Mt 27:3–10, 19). Some of the additions indicate that he utilized traditions that he had received from elsewhere; others are due to his own theological insight (e.g., Mt 26:28 “…for the forgiveness of sins”; Mt 27:52). In his editing Matthew also altered Mark in some minor details. But there is no need to suppose that he knew any passion narrative other than Mark’s.
  2. 26:1–2 When Jesus finished all these words: see note on Mt 7:28–29. “You know…crucified”: Matthew turns Mark’s statement of the time (Mk 14:1) into Jesus’ final prediction of his passion. Passover: see note on Mk 14:1.
  3. 26:3 Caiaphas was high priest from A.D. 18 to 36.
  4. 26:5 Not during the festival: the plan to delay Jesus’ arrest and execution until after the festival was not carried out, for according to the synoptics he was arrested on the night of Nisan 14 and put to death the following day. No reason is given why the plan was changed.

  6. 26:12 To prepare me for burial: cf. Mk 14:8. In accordance with the interpretation of this act as Jesus’ burial anointing, Matthew, more consistent than Mark, changes the purpose of the visit of the women to Jesus’ tomb; they do not go to anoint him (Mk 16:1) but “to see the tomb” (Mt 28:1).

  8. 26:15 The motive of avarice is introduced by Judas’s question about the price for betrayal, which is absent in the Marcan source (Mk 14:10–11). Hand him over: the same Greek verb is used to express the saving purpose of God by which Jesus is handed over to death (cf. Mt 17:22; 20:18; 26:2) and the human malice that hands him over. Thirty pieces of silver: the price of the betrayal is found only in Matthew. It is derived from Zec 11:12 where it is the wages paid to the rejected shepherd, a cheap price (Zec 11:13). That amount is also the compensation paid to one whose slave has been gored by an ox (Ex 21:32).
  9. 26:17 The first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread: see note on Mk 14:1. Matthew omits Mark’s “when they sacrificed the Passover lamb.”
  10. 26:18 By omitting much of Mk 14:13–15, adding My appointed time draws near, and turning the question into a statement, in your house I shall celebrate the Passover, Matthew has given this passage a solemnity and majesty greater than that of his source.
  11. 26:21 Given Matthew’s interest in the fulfillment of the Old Testament, it is curious that he omits the Marcan designation of Jesus’ betrayer as “one who is eating with me” (Mk 14:18), since that is probably an allusion to Ps 41:10. However, the shocking fact that the betrayer is one who shares table fellowship with Jesus is emphasized in Mt 26:23.
  12. 26:24 It would be better…born: the enormity of the deed is such that it would be better not to exist than to do it.
  13. 26:25 Peculiar to Matthew. You have said so: cf. Mt 26:64; 27:11. This is a half-affirmative. Emphasis is laid on the pronoun and the answer implies that the statement would not have been made if the question had not been asked.
  14. 26:26–29 See note on Mk 14:22–24. The Marcan-Matthean is one of the two major New Testament traditions of the words of Jesus when instituting the Eucharist. The other (and earlier) is the Pauline-Lucan (1 Cor 11:23–25; Lk 22:19–20). Each shows the influence of Christian liturgical usage, but the Marcan-Matthean is more developed in that regard than the Pauline-Lucan. The words over the bread and cup succeed each other without the intervening meal mentioned in 1 Cor 11:25; Lk 22:20; and there is parallelism between the consecratory words (this is my body…this is my blood). Matthew follows Mark closely but with some changes.
  15. 26:26 See note on Mt 14:19. Said the blessing: a prayer blessing God. Take and eat: literally, Take, eat. Eat is an addition to Mark’s “take it” (literally, “take”; Mk 14:22). This is my body: the bread is identified with Jesus himself.
  16. 26:27–28 Gave thanks: see note on Mt 15:36. Gave it to them…all of you: cf. Mk 14:23–24. In the Marcan sequence the disciples drink and then Jesus says the interpretative words. Matthew has changed this into a command to drink followed by those words. My blood: see Lv 17:11 for the concept that the blood is “the seat of life” and that when placed on the altar it “makes atonement.” Which will be shed: the present participle, “being shed” or “going to be shed,” is future in relation to the Last Supper. On behalf of: Greek peri; see note on Mk 14:24. Many: see note on Mt 20:28. For the forgiveness of sins: a Matthean addition. The same phrase occurs in Mk 1:4 in connection with John’s baptism but Matthew avoids it there (Mt 3:11). He places it here probably because he wishes to emphasize that it is the sacrificial death of Jesus that brings forgiveness of sins.
  17. 26:29 Although his death will interrupt the table fellowship he has had with the disciples, Jesus confidently predicts his vindication by God and a new table fellowship with them at the banquet of the kingdom.

  21. 26:36–56 Cf. Mk 14:32–52. The account of Jesus in Gethsemane is divided between that of his agony (Mt 26:36–46) and that of his betrayal and arrest (Mt 26:47–56). Jesus’ sorrow and distress (Mt 26:37) in face of death is unrelieved by the presence of his three disciples who, though urged to watch with him (Mt 26:38, 41), fall asleep (Mt 26:40, 43). He prays that if…possible his death may be avoided (Mt 26:39) but that his Father’s will be done (Mt 26:39, 42, 44). Knowing then that his death must take place, he announces to his companions that the hour for his being handed over has come (Mt 26:45). Judas arrives with an armed band provided by the Sanhedrin and greets Jesus with a kiss, the prearranged sign for his identification (Mt 26:47–49). After his arrest, he rebukes a disciple who has attacked the high priest’s servant with a sword (Mt 26:51–54), and chides those who have come out to seize him with swords and clubs as if he were a robber (Mt 26:55–56). In both rebukes Jesus declares that the treatment he is now receiving is the fulfillment of the scriptures (Mt 26:55, 56). The subsequent flight of all the disciples is itself the fulfillment of his own prediction (cf. 31). In this episode, Matthew follows Mark with a few alterations.
  22. 26:36 Gethsemane: the Hebrew name means “oil press” and designates an olive orchard on the western slope of the Mount of Olives; see note on Mt 21:1. The name appears only in Matthew and Mark. The place is called a “garden” in Jn 18:1.
  23. 26:37 Peter and the two sons of Zebedee: cf. Mt 17:1.
  24. 26:38 Cf. Ps 42:6, 12. In the Septuagint (Ps 41:5, 12) the same Greek word for sorrowful is used as here. To death: i.e., “enough to die”; cf. Jon 4:9.
  25. 26:39 My Father: see note on Mk 14:36. Matthew omits the Aramaic ’abbā’ and adds the qualifier my. This cup: see note on Mk 10:38–40.
  26. 26:41 Undergo the test: see note on Mt 6:13. In that verse “the final test” translates the same Greek word as is here translated the test, and these are the only instances of the use of that word in Matthew. It is possible that the passion of Jesus is seen here as an anticipation of the great tribulation that will precede the parousia (see notes on Mt 24:8; 24:21) to which Mt 6:13 refers, and that just as Jesus prays to be delivered from death (Mt 26:39), so he exhorts the disciples to pray that they will not have to undergo the great test that his passion would be for them. Some scholars, however, understand not undergo (literally, “not enter”) the test as meaning not that the disciples may be spared the test but that they may not yield to the temptation of falling away from Jesus because of his passion even though they will have to endure it.

  28. 26:49 Rabbi: see note on Mt 23:6–7. Jesus is so addressed twice in Matthew (Mt 26:25), both times by Judas. For the significance of the closely related address “teacher” in Matthew, see note on Mt 8:19.
  29. 26:55 Day after day…arrest me: cf. Mk 14:49. This suggests that Jesus had taught for a relatively long period in Jerusalem, whereas Mt 21:1–11 puts his coming to the city for the first time only a few days before.
  30. 26:57–68 Following Mk 14:53–65 Matthew presents the nighttime appearance of Jesus before the Sanhedrin as a real trial. After many false witnesses bring charges against him that do not suffice for the death sentence (Mt 26:60), two came forward who charge him with claiming to be able to destroy the temple…and within three days to rebuild it (Mt 26:60–61). Jesus makes no answer even when challenged to do so by the high priest, who then orders him to declare under oath…whether he is the Messiah, the Son of God (Mt 26:62–63). Matthew changes Mark’s clear affirmative response (Mk 14:62) to the same one as that given to Judas (Mt 26:25), but follows Mark almost verbatim in Jesus’ predicting that his judges will see him (the Son of Man) seated at the right hand of God and coming on the clouds of heaven (Mt 26:64). The high priest then charges him with blasphemy (Mt 26:65), a charge with which the other members of the Sanhedrin agree by declaring that he deserves to die (Mt 26:66). They then attack him (Mt 26:67) and mockingly demand that he prophesy (Mt 26:68). This account contains elements that are contrary to the judicial procedures prescribed in the Mishnah, the Jewish code of law that dates in written form from ca. A.D. 200, e.g., trial on a feast day, a night session of the court, pronouncement of a verdict of condemnation at the same session at which testimony was received. Consequently, some scholars regard the account entirely as a creation of the early Christians without historical value. However, it is disputable whether the norms found in the Mishnah were in force at the time of Jesus. More to the point is the question whether the Matthean-Marcan night trial derives from a combination of two separate incidents, a nighttime preliminary investigation (cf. Jn 18:13, 19–24) and a formal trial on the following morning (cf. Lk 22:66–71).

  33. 26:60–61 Two: cf. Dt 19:15. I can destroy…rebuild it: there are significant differences from the Marcan parallel (Mk 14:58). The charge is probably based on Jesus’ prediction of the temple’s destruction; see notes on Mt 23:37–39; 24:2; and Jn 2:19. A similar prediction by Jeremiah was considered as deserving death; cf.   36. 26:65 Blasphemed: the punishment for blasphemy was death by stoning (see Lv 24:10–16). According to the Mishnah, to be guilty of blasphemy one had to pronounce “the Name itself,” i.e., Yahweh; cf. Sanhedrin 7:4, 5. Those who judge the gospel accounts of Jesus’ trial by the later Mishnah standards point out that Jesus uses the surrogate “the Power,” and hence no Jewish court would have regarded him as guilty of blasphemy; others hold that the Mishnah’s narrow understanding of blasphemy was a later development.
  37. 26:67–68 The physical abuse, apparently done to Jesus by the members of the Sanhedrin themselves, recalls the sufferings of the Isaian Servant of the Lord; cf. Is 50:6. The mocking challenge to prophesy is probably motivated by Jesus’ prediction of his future glory (Mt 26:64).
  38. 26:70 Denied it in front of everyone: see Mt 10:33. Peter’s repentance (Mt 26:75) saves him from the fearful destiny of which Jesus speaks there.

26 When Yeshua had finished speaking, he said to his talmidim, “As you know, Pesach is two days away, and the Son of Man will be handed over to be nailed to the execution-stake.”

Then the head cohanim and the elders of the people gathered in the palace of Kayafa the cohen hagadol. They made plans to arrest Yeshua surreptitiously and have him put to death; but they said, “Not during the festival, or the people will riot.”

Yeshua was in Beit-Anyah, at the home of Shim‘on, the man who had had tzara’at. A woman who had an alabaster jar filled with very expensive perfume approached Yeshua while he was eating and began pouring it on his head. When the talmidim saw it, they became very angry. “Why this waste?” they asked. “This could have been sold for a lot of money and given to the poor.” 10 But Yeshua, aware of what was going on, said to them, “Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing for me. 11 The poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have me. 12 She poured this perfume on me to prepare my body for burial. 13 Yes! I tell you that throughout the whole world, wherever this Good News is proclaimed, what she has done will be told in her memory.”

14 Then one of the Twelve, the one called Y’hudah from K’riot, went to the head cohanim 15 and said, “What are you willing to give me if I turn Yeshua over to you?” They counted out thirty silver coins and gave them to Y’hudah.[a] 16 From then on he looked for a good opportunity to betray him.

17 On the first day for matzah, the talmidim came to Yeshua and asked, “Where do you want us to prepare your Seder?” 18 “Go into the city, to so-and-so,” he replied, “and tell him that the Rabbi says, ‘My time is near, my talmidim and I are celebrating Pesach at your house.’” 19 The talmidim did as Yeshua directed and prepared the Seder.

20 When evening came, Yeshua reclined with the twelve talmidim; 21 and as they were eating, he said, “Yes, I tell you that one of you is going to betray me.” 22 They became terribly upset and began asking him, one after the other, “Lord, you don’t mean me, do you?” 23 He answered, “The one who dips his matzah in the dish with me is the one who will betray me. 24 The Son of Man will die just as the Tanakh says he will; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for him had he never been born!” 25 Y’hudah, the one who was betraying him, then asked, “Surely, Rabbi, you don’t mean me?” He answered, “The words are yours.”

26 While they were eating, Yeshua took a piece of matzah, made the b’rakhah, broke it, gave it to the talmidim and said, “Take! Eat! This is my body!” 27 Also he took a cup of wine, made the b’rakhah, and gave it to them, saying, “All of you, drink from it! 28 For this is my blood, which ratifies the New Covenant, my blood shed on behalf of many, so that they may have their sins forgiven. 29 I tell you, I will not drink this ‘fruit of the vine’ again until the day I drink new wine with you in my Father’s Kingdom.”

30 After singing the Hallel, they went out to the Mount of Olives. 31 Yeshua then said to them, “Tonight you will all lose faith in me, as the Tanakh says, ‘I will strike the shepherd dead, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’[b] 32 But after I have been raised, I will go ahead of you into the Galil.” 33 “I will never lose faith in you,” Kefa answered, “even if everyone else does.” 34 Yeshua said to him, “Yes! I tell you that tonight before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!” 35 “Even if I must die with you,” Kefa replied, “I will never disown you!” And all the talmidim said the same thing.

36 Then Yeshua went with his talmidim to a place called Gat-Sh’manim and said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 He took with him Kefa and Zavdai’s two sons. Grief and anguish came over him, 38 and he said to them, “My heart is so filled with sadness that I could die! Remain here and stay awake with me.” 39 Going on a little farther, he fell on his face, praying, “My Father, if possible, let this cup pass from me! Yet — not what I want, but what you want!” 40 He returned to the talmidim and found them sleeping. He said to Kefa, “Were you so weak that you couldn’t stay awake with me for even an hour? 41 Stay awake, and pray that you will not be put to the test — the spirit indeed is eager, but human nature is weak.”

42 A second time he went off and prayed. “My Father, if this cup cannot pass away unless I drink it, let what you want be done.” 43 Again he returned and found them sleeping, their eyes were so heavy.

44 Leaving them again, he went off and prayed a third time, saying the same words. 45 Then he came to the talmidim and said, “For now, go on sleeping, take your rest. . . . Look! The time has come for the Son of Man to be betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Get up! Let’s go! Here comes my betrayer!”

47 While Yeshua was still speaking, Y’hudah (one of the Twelve!) came, and with him a large crowd carrying swords and clubs, from the head cohanim and elders of the people. 48 The betrayer had arranged to give them a signal: “The man I kiss is the one you want — grab him!” 49 He went straight up to Yeshua, said, “Shalom, Rabbi!” and kissed him. 50 Yeshua said to him, “Friend, do what you came to do.” Then they moved forward, laid hold of Yeshua and arrested him.

51 At that, one of the men with Yeshua reached for his sword, drew it out and struck at the servant of the cohen hagadol, cutting off his ear. 52 Yeshua said to him, “Put your sword back where it belongs, for everyone who uses the sword will die by the sword. 53 Don’t you know that I can ask my Father, and he will instantly provide more than a dozen armies of angels to help me? 54 But if I did that, how could the passages in the Tanakh be fulfilled that say it has to happen this way?”

55 Then Yeshua addressed the crowd: “So you came out to take me with swords and clubs, the way you would the leader of a rebellion? Every day I sat in the Temple court, teaching; and you didn’t seize me then. 56 But all this has happened so that what the prophets wrote may be fulfilled.” Then the talmidim all deserted him and ran away.

57 Those who had seized Yeshua led him off to Kayafa the cohen hagadol, where the Torah-teachers and elders were assembled. 58 Kefa followed him at a distance as far as the courtyard of the cohen hagadol; then he went inside and sat down with the guards to see what the outcome would be.

59 The head cohanim and the whole Sanhedrin looked for some false evidence against Yeshua, so that they might put him to death. 60 But they didn’t find any, even though many liars came forward to give testimony. At last, however, two people came forward and said, 61 “This man said, ‘I can tear down God’s Temple and build it again in three days.’” 62 The cohen hagadol stood up and said, “Have you nothing to say to the accusation these men are making?” 63 Yeshua remained silent. The cohen hagadol said to him, “I put you under oath! By the living God, tell us if you are the Mashiach, the Son of God!” 64 Yeshua said to him, “The words are your own. But I tell you that one day you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of HaG’vurah and coming on the clouds of heaven.[c] 65 At this, the cohen hagadol tore his robes. “Blasphemy!” he said. “Why do we still need witnesses? You heard him blaspheme! 66 What is your verdict?” “Guilty,” they answered. “He deserves death!” 67 Then they spit in his face and pounded him with their fists; and those who were beating him 68 said, “Now, you ‘Messiah,’ ‘prophesy’ to us: who hit you that time?”

69 Kefa was sitting outside in the courtyard when a servant girl came up to him. “You too were with Yeshua from the Galil,” she said. 70 But he denied it in front of everyone — “I don’t know what you’re talking about!” 71 He went out onto the porch, and another girl saw him and said to the people there, “This man was with Yeshua of Natzeret.” 72 Again he denied it, swearing, “I don’t know the man!” 73 After a little while, the bystanders approached Kefa and said, “You must be one of them — your accent gives you away.” 74 This time he began to invoke a curse on himself as he swore, “I do not know the man!” — and immediately a rooster crowed. 75 Kefa remembered what Yeshua had said, “Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times”; and he went outside and cried bitterly.

26 E avvenne che, quando Gesú ebbe finito tutti questi discorsi, disse ai suoi discepoli:

«Voi sapete che fra due giorni è la Pasqua, e il Figlio dell'uomo sarà consegnato per esser crocifisso».

Allora i capi dei sacerdoti, gli scribi e gli anziani del popolo si riunirono nella corte del sommo sacerdote di nome Caiafa.

E tennero consiglio per prendere Gesú con inganno e farlo morire;

ma dicevano: «Non durante la festa, perché non nasca tumulto fra il popolo».

Ora, essendo Gesú in Betania, in casa di Simone il lebbroso

gli si avvicinò una donna con un alabastro di olio profumato di gran prezzo, e lo versò sul suo capo, mentre egli era a tavola.

Visto ciò, i Suoi discepoli s'indignarono e dissero: «Perché mai questo spreco?

Quest'olio, infatti, si poteva vendere a gran prezzo e darne il ricavato ai poveri».

10 Ma Gesú, conosciuto ciò, disse loro: «Perché mai infastidite questa donna? Ella infatti ha compiuto una buona azione verso di me.

11 Perché avrete sempre i poveri con voi, ma non avrete sempre me.

12 Poiché, versando questo olio profumato sul mio corpo, ella lo ha fatto per preparare il mio corpo per la sepoltura.

13 Io Vi dico in verità, che in tutto il mondo, dovunque sarà predicato questo evangelo, si racconterà anche ciò che costei ha fatto, in memoria di lei».

14 Allora uno dei dodici, di nome Giuda Iscariota, andò dai capi dei sacerdoti,

15 e disse loro: «Quanto mi volete dare, perché io ve lo consegni?». Ed essi gli contarono trenta sicli d'argento.

16 E da quell'ora egli cercava l'opportunità di tradirlo.

17 Or il primo giorno degli Azzimi, i discepoli si accostarono a Gesú e gli dissero: «Dove vuoi che ti apparecchiamo per mangiare la Pasqua?».

18 Ed egli rispose: «Andate in città da un tale e ditegli: "il Maestro dice: Il mio tempo è vicino, farò la Pasqua in casa tua con i miei discepoli"».

19 Allora i discepoli fecero come Gesú aveva loro ordinato e apparecchiarono la Pasqua.

20 E quando fu sera, egli si mise a tavola con i dodici;

21 e, mentre mangiavano, disse: «In verità vi dico che uno di voi mi tradirà».

22 Ed essi si rattristarono grandemente, e ciascuno di loro prese a dirgli: «Sono io quello, Signore?».

23 Ed egli, rispondendo, disse: «Colui che ha intinto con me la mano nel piatto mi tradirà.

24 Il Figlio dell'uomo certo se ne va secondo che è scritto di lui; ma guai a quell'uomo per mezzo del quale il Figlio dell'uomo è tradito! Sarebbe stato meglio per lui di non essere mai nato».

25 E Giuda, colui che lo avrebbe tradito, prese a dire: «Maestro, sono io quello?». Egli gli disse: «Tu l'hai detto!».

26 Ora, mentre mangiavano, Gesú prese il pane e lo benedisse, lo ruppe e lo diede ai discepoli e disse: «Prendete, mangiate; questo è il mio corpo».

27 Poi prese il calice e rese grazie, e lo diede loro dicendo: «Bevetene tutti,

28 perché questo è il mio sangue, il sangue del nuovo patto che è sparso per molti per il perdono dei peccati.

29 Ed io vi dico, che da ora in poi io non berrò piú di questo frutto della vigna fino a quel giorno in cui io lo berrò nuovo con voi nel regno del Padre mio».

30 E, dopo aver cantato l'inno, se ne uscirono verso il monte degli Ulivi.

31 Allora Gesú disse loro: «Voi tutti questa notte sarete scandalizzati per causa mia, perché sta scritto: "Percuoterò il pastore e le pecore del gregge saranno disperse".

32 Ma, dopo che sarò risorto, vi precederò in Galilea»,

33 Allora Pietro, rispondendo, gli disse: «Quand'anche tutti si scandalizzassero per causa tua, io non mi scandalizzerò mai!».

34 Gesú gli disse: «In verità ti dico che questa stessa notte, prima che il gallo canti, tu mi rinnegherai tre volte».

35 Pietro gli disse: «Anche se dovessi morire con te, non ti rinnegherò in alcun modo». Lo stesso dissero anche tutti i discepoli.

36 Allora Gesú andò con loro in un luogo, chiamato Getsemani, e disse ai discepoli: «Sedetevi qui, mentre io vado là a pregare».

37 E, presi con sé Pietro e i due figli di Zebedeo, cominciò a provare tristezza e grande angoscia.

38 Allora egli disse loro: «L'anima mia è profondamente triste, fino alla morte; restate qui e vegliate con me».

39 E andato un poco in avanti, si gettò con la faccia a terra e pregava dicendo: «Padre mio, se è possibile, allontana da me questo calice; tuttavia, non come io voglio, ma come vuoi tu».

40 Poi tornò dai discepoli e li trovò che dormivano, e disse a Pietro: «Cosí non avete potuto vegliare neppure un'ora con me?

41 Vegliate e pregate, per non cadere in tentazione, poiché lo spirito è pronto ma la carne è debole».

42 Si allontanò di nuovo per la seconda volta e pregò, dicendo: «Padre mio, se non è possibile che questo calice si allontani da me senza che io lo beva sia fatta la tua volontà!».

43 Poi, tornato di nuovo, li trovò che dormivano, perché i loro occhi erano appesantiti.

44 E, lasciatili, si allontanò di nuovo e pregò per la terza volta, dicendo le medesime parole.

45 Ritornò poi dai suoi discepoli e disse loro: «Da ora in poi dormite pure e riposatevi; ecco l'ora è giunta e il Figlio dell'uomo è dato nelle mani dei peccatori.

46 Alzatevi, andiamo; ecco, colui che mi tradisce è vicino».

47 E mentre egli parlava ancora, ecco Giuda, uno dei dodici, arrivò, e con lui una grande turba con spade e bastoni, mandati dai capi dei sacerdoti e dagli anziani del popolo.

48 Or colui che lo tradiva aveva dato loro un segnale, dicendo: «Quello che io bacerò, è lui; prendetelo».

49 E in quell'istante, accostatosi a Gesú, gli disse: «Salve, Maestro!». E lo baciò caldamente.

50 E Gesú, gli disse: «Amico, cosa sei venuto a fare?». Allora essi, accostatisi a Gesú, gli posero le mani addosso e lo presero.

51 Ed ecco, uno di quelli che erano con Gesú, stesa la mano, trasse fuori la sua spada e percosse il servo del sommo sacerdote, recidendogli un orecchio.

52 Allora Gesú gli disse: «Riponi la tua spada al suo posto, perché tutti quelli che mettono mano alla spada, periranno di spada.

53 Pensi forse che io non potrei adesso pregare il Padre mio, perché mi mandi piú di dodici legioni di angeli?

54 Come dunque si adempirebbero le Scritture, le quali dicono che deve avvenire cosi?».

55 In quello stesso momento Gesú disse alle turbe: «Voi siete usciti a prendermi con spade e bastoni, come contro un brigante; eppure ogni giorno ero seduto in mezzo a voi nel tempio ad insegnare, e non mi avete preso.

56 Ma tutto questo è avvenuto affinché si adempissero le Scritture dei profeti». Allora tutti i discepoli, lasciatolo, se ne fuggirono.

57 Or quelli che avevano arrestato Gesú lo condussero da Caiafa, sommo sacerdote, presso il quale già si erano riuniti gli scribi e gli anziani.

58 E Pietro lo seguí da lontano fino al cortile del sommo sacerdote, e, entrato dentro, si pose a sedere con le guardie per vedere la fine.

59 Ora i capi dei sacerdoti, gli anziani e tutto il sinedrio, cercavano qualche falsa testimonianza contro Gesú, per farlo morire,

60 ma non ne trovavano alcuna; sebbene si fossero fatti avanti molti falsi testimoni, non ne trovarono. Ma alla fine vennero avanti due falsi testimoni

61 i quali dissero: «Costui ha detto: "Io posso distruggere il tempio di Dio e ricostruirlo in tre giorni»,

62 Allora il sommo sacerdote, alzatosi, gli disse: «Non rispondi nulla a ciò che costoro testimoniano contro di te?».

63 Ma Gesú taceva. E il sommo sacerdote replicò dicendo: «Io ti scongiuro per il Dio vivente di dirci se sei il Cristo, il Figlio di Dio».

64 Gesú gli disse: «Tu l'hai detto! Anzi io vi dico che in avvenire voi vedrete il Figlio dell'uomo sedere alla destra della Potenza, e venire sulle nuvole del cielo».

65 Allora il sommo sacerdote stracciò le sue vesti, dicendo: «Egli ha bestemmiato; quale bisogno abbiamo piú di testimoni? Ecco, ora avete udito la sua bestemmia.

66 Che ve ne pare?». Ed essi, rispondendo, dissero: «Egli è reo di morte!».

67 Allora gli sputarono in faccia e lo schiaffeggiarono; ed altri lo percossero con pugni,

68 dicendo: «O Cristo. indovina! Chi ti ha percosso?».

69 Ora Pietro sedeva fuori nel cortile e una serva si accostò a lui, dicendo: «Anche tu eri con Gesú il Galileo».

70 Ma egli lo negò davanti a tutti, dicendo: «Non so di che stai parlando».

71 Come egli uscí nell'atrio, un'altra lo vide e disse a quelli che erano là: «Anche costui era con Gesú il Nazareno!».

72 Ma egli di nuovo lo negò con giuramento, dicendo: «Io non conosco quell'uomo».

73 Poco dopo anche gli astanti, accostatisi, dissero a Pietro: «Certo, anche tu sei uno di loro, perché il tuo parlare ti tradisce».

74 Allora egli cominciò a maledire e a giurare, dicendo: «Io non conosco quell'uomo». E in quell'istante il gallo cantò.

75 Allora Pietro si ricordò di quello che Gesú gli aveva detto: «Prima che il gallo canti, mi rinnegherai tre volte», Ed egli uscí, e pianse amaramente.

26 耶 穌 說 完 了 這 一 切 的 話 , 就 對 門 徒 說 :

你 們 知 道 , 過 兩 天 是 逾 越 節 , 人 子 將 要 被 交 給 人 , 釘 在 十 字 架 上 。

那 時 , 祭 司 長 和 民 間 的 長 老 聚 集 在 大 祭 司 稱 為 該 亞 法 的 院 裡 。

大 家 商 議 要 用 詭 計 拿 住 耶 穌 , 殺 他 ,

只 是 說 : 當 節 的 日 子 不 可 , 恐 怕 民 間 生 亂 。

耶 穌 在 伯 大 尼 長 大 痲 瘋 的 西 門 家 裡 ,

有 一 個 女 人 拿 著 一 玉 瓶 極 貴 的 香 膏 來 , 趁 耶 穌 坐 席 的 時 候 , 澆 在 他 的 頭 上 。

門 徒 看 見 就 很 不 喜 悅 , 說 : 何 用 這 樣 的 枉 費 呢 !

這 香 膏 可 以 賣 許 多 錢 , 賙 濟 窮 人 。

10 耶 穌 看 出 他 們 的 意 思 , 就 說 : 為 甚 麼 難 為 這 女 人 呢 ? 他 在 我 身 上 做 的 是 一 件 美 事 。

11 因 為 常 有 窮 人 和 你 們 同 在 ; 只 是 你 們 不 常 有 我 。

12 他 將 這 香 膏 澆 在 我 身 上 是 為 我 安 葬 做 的 。

13 我 實 在 告 訴 你 們 , 普 天 之 下 , 無 論 在 甚 麼 地 方 傳 這 福 音 , 也 要 述 說 這 女 人 所 行 的 , 作 個 紀 念 。

14 當 下 , 十 二 門 徒 裡 有 一 個 稱 為 加 略 人 猶 大 的 , 去 見 祭 司 長 ,

15 說 : 我 把 他 交 給 你 們 , 你 們 願 意 給 我 多 少 錢 ? 他 們 就 給 了 他 三 十 塊 錢 。

16 從 那 時 候 , 他 就 找 機 會 要 把 耶 穌 交 給 他 們 。

17 除 酵 節 的 第 一 天 , 門 徒 來 問 耶 穌 說 : 你 吃 逾 越 節 的 筵 席 , 要 我 們 在 那 裡 給 你 預 備 ?

18 耶 穌 說 : 你 們 進 城 去 , 到 某 人 那 裡 , 對 他 說 : 夫 子 說 : 我 的 時 候 快 到 了 , 我 與 門 徒 要 在 你 家 裡 守 逾 越 節 。

19 門 徒 遵 著 耶 穌 所 吩 咐 的 就 去 預 備 了 逾 越 節 的 筵 席 。

20 到 了 晚 上 , 耶 穌 和 十 二 個 門 徒 坐 席 。

21 正 吃 的 時 候 , 耶 穌 說 : 我 實 在 告 訴 你 們 , 你 們 中 間 有 一 個 人 要 賣 我 了 。

22 他 們 就 甚 憂 愁 , 一 個 一 個 的 問 他 說 : 主 , 是 我 麼 ?

23 耶 穌 回 答 說 : 同 我 蘸 手 在 盤 子 裡 的 , 就 是 他 要 賣 我 。

24 人 子 必 要 去 世 , 正 如 經 上 指 著 他 所 寫 的 ; 但 賣 人 子 的 人 有 禍 了 ! 那 人 不 生 在 世 上 倒 好 。

25 賣 耶 穌 的 猶 大 問 他 說 : 拉 比 , 是 我 麼 ? 耶 穌 說 : 你 說 的 是 。

26 他 們 吃 的 時 候 , 耶 穌 拿 起 餅 來 , 祝 福 , 就 擘 開 , 遞 給 門 徒 , 說 : 你 們 拿 著 吃 , 這 是 我 的 身 體 ;

27 又 拿 起 杯 來 , 祝 謝 了 , 遞 給 他 們 , 說 : 你 們 都 喝 這 個 ;

28 因 為 這 是 我 立 約 的 血 , 為 多 人 流 出 來 , 使 罪 得 赦 。

29 但 我 告 訴 你 們 , 從 今 以 後 , 我 不 再 喝 這 葡 萄 汁 , 直 到 我 在 我 父 的 國 裡 同 你 們 喝 新 的 那 日 子 。

30 他 們 唱 了 詩 , 就 出 來 往 橄 欖 山 去 。

31 那 時 , 耶 穌 對 他 們 說 : 今 夜 , 你 們 為 我 的 緣 故 都 要 跌 倒 。 因 為 經 上 記 著 說 : 我 要 擊 打 牧 人 , 羊 就 分 散 了 。

32 但 我 復 活 以 後 , 要 在 你 們 以 先 往 加 利 利 去 。

33 彼 得 說 : 眾 人 雖 然 為 你 的 緣 故 跌 倒 , 我 卻 永 不 跌 倒 。

34 耶 穌 說 : 我 實 在 告 訴 你 , 今 夜 雞 叫 以 先 , 你 要 三 次 不 認 我 。

35 彼 得 說 : 我 就 是 必 須 和 你 同 死 , 也 總 不 能 不 認 你 。 眾 門 徒 都 是 這 樣 說 。

36 耶 穌 同 門 徒 來 到 一 個 地 方 , 名 叫 客 西 馬 尼 , 就 對 他 們 說 : 你 們 坐 在 這 裡 , 等 我 到 那 邊 去 禱 告 。

37 於 是 帶 著 彼 得 和 西 庇 太 的 兩 個 兒 子 同 去 , 就 憂 愁 起 來 , 極 其 難 過 ,

38 便 對 他 們 說 : 我 心 裡 甚 是 憂 傷 , 幾 乎 要 死 ; 你 們 在 這 裡 等 候 , 和 我 一 同 儆 醒 。

39 他 就 稍 往 前 走 , 俯 伏 在 地 , 禱 告 說 : 我 父 阿 , 倘 若 可 行 , 求 你 叫 這 杯 離 開 我 。 然 而 , 不 要 照 我 的 意 思 , 只 要 照 你 的 意 思 。

40 來 到 門 徒 那 裡 , 見 他 們 睡 著 了 , 就 對 彼 得 說 : 怎 麼 樣 ? 你 們 不 能 同 我 儆 醒 片 時 麼 ?

41 總 要 儆 醒 禱 告 , 免 得 入 了 迷 惑 。 你 們 心 靈 固 然 願 意 , 肉 體 卻 軟 弱 了 。

42 第 二 次 又 去 禱 告 說 : 我 父 阿 , 這 杯 若 不 能 離 開 我 , 必 要 我 喝 , 就 願 你 的 意 旨 成 全 。

43 又 來 , 見 他 們 睡 著 了 , 因 為 他 們 的 眼 睛 困 倦 。

44 耶 穌 又 離 開 他 們 去 了 。 第 三 次 禱 告 , 說 的 話 還 是 與 先 前 一 樣 。

45 於 是 來 到 門 徒 那 裡 , 對 他 們 說 : 現 在 你 們 仍 然 睡 覺 安 歇 罷 ( 罷 : 或 作 麼 ? ) ! 時 候 到 了 , 人 子 被 賣 在 罪 人 手 裡 了 。

46 起 來 ! 我 們 走 罷 。 看 哪 , 賣 我 的 人 近 了 。

47 說 話 之 間 , 那 十 二 個 門 徒 裡 的 猶 大 來 了 , 並 有 許 多 人 帶 著 刀 棒 , 從 祭 司 長 和 民 間 的 長 老 那 裡 與 他 同 來 。

48 那 賣 耶 穌 的 給 了 他 們 一 個 暗 號 , 說 : 我 與 誰 親 嘴 , 誰 就 是 他 。 你 們 可 以 拿 住 他 。

49 猶 大 隨 即 到 耶 穌 跟 前 , 說 : 請 拉 比 安 , 就 與 他 親 嘴 。

50 耶 穌 對 他 說 : 朋 友 , 你 來 要 做 的 事 , 就 做 罷 。 於 是 那 些 人 上 前 , 下 手 拿 住 耶 穌 。

51 有 跟 隨 耶 穌 的 一 個 人 伸 手 拔 出 刀 來 , 將 大 祭 司 的 僕 人 砍 了 一 刀 , 削 掉 了 他 一 個 耳 朵 。

52 耶 穌 對 他 說 : 收 刀 入 鞘 罷 ! 凡 動 刀 的 , 必 死 在 刀 下 。

53 你 想 , 我 不 能 求 我 父 現 在 為 我 差 遣 十 二 營 多 天 使 來 麼 ?

54 若 是 這 樣 , 經 上 所 說 , 事 情 必 須 如 此 的 話 怎 麼 應 驗 呢 ?

55 當 時 , 耶 穌 對 眾 人 說 : 你 們 帶 著 刀 棒 出 來 拿 我 , 如 同 拿 強 盜 麼 ? 我 天 天 坐 在 殿 裡 教 訓 人 , 你 們 並 沒 有 拿 我 。

56 但 這 一 切 的 事 成 就 了 , 為 要 應 驗 先 知 書 上 的 話 。 當 下 , 門 徒 都 離 開 他 逃 走 了 。

57 拿 耶 穌 的 人 把 他 帶 到 大 祭 司 該 亞 法 那 裡 去 ; 文 士 和 長 老 已 經 在 那 裡 聚 會 。

58 彼 得 遠 遠 的 跟 著 耶 穌 , 直 到 大 祭 司 的 院 子 , 進 到 裡 面 , 就 和 差 役 同 坐 , 要 看 這 事 到 底 怎 樣 。

59 祭 司 長 和 全 公 會 尋 找 假 見 證 控 告 耶 穌 , 要 治 死 他 。

60 雖 有 好 些 人 來 作 假 見 證 , 總 得 不 著 實 據 。 末 後 有 兩 個 人 前 來 , 說 :

61 這 個 人 曾 說 : 我 能 拆 毀 神 的 殿 , 三 日 內 又 建 造 起 來 。

62 大 祭 司 就 站 起 來 , 對 耶 穌 說 : 你 甚 麼 都 不 回 答 麼 ? 這 些 人 作 見 證 告 你 的 是 甚 麼 呢 ?

63 耶 穌 卻 不 言 語 。 大 祭 司 對 他 說 : 我 指 著 永 生 神 叫 你 起 誓 告 訴 我 們 , 你 是 神 的 兒 子 基 督 不 是 ?

64 耶 穌 對 他 說 : 你 說 的 是 。 然 而 , 我 告 訴 你 們 , 後 來 你 們 要 看 見 人 子 坐 在 那 權 能 者 的 右 邊 , 駕 著 天 上 的 雲 降 臨 。

65 大 祭 司 就 撕 開 衣 服 , 說 : 他 說 了 僭 妄 的 話 , 我 們 何 必 再 用 見 證 人 呢 ? 這 僭 妄 的 話 , 現 在 你 們 都 聽 見 了 。

66 你 們 的 意 見 如 何 ? 他 們 回 答 說 : 他 是 該 死 的 。

67 他 們 就 吐 唾 沫 在 他 臉 上 , 用 拳 頭 打 他 ; 也 有 用 手 掌 打 他 的 , 說 :

68 基 督 阿 ! 你 是 先 知 , 告 訴 我 們 打 你 的 是 誰 ?

71 既 出 去 , 到 了 門 口 , 又 有 一 個 使 女 看 見 他 , 就 對 那 裡 的 人 說 : 這 個 人 也 是 同 拿 撒 勒 人 耶 穌 一 夥 的 。

72 彼 得 又 不 承 認 , 並 且 起 誓 說 : 我 不 認 得 那 個 人 。

73 過 了 不 多 的 時 候 , 旁 邊 站 著 的 人 前 來 , 對 彼 得 說 : 你 真 是 他 們 一 黨 的 , 你 的 口 音 把 你 露 出 來 了 。

74 彼 得 就 發 咒 起 誓 的 說 : 我 不 認 得 那 個 人 。 立 時 , 雞 就 叫 了 。

75 彼 得 想 起 耶 穌 所 說 的 話 : 雞 叫 以 先 , 你 要 三 次 不 認 我 。 他 就 出 去 痛 哭 。
