³⁹ Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup^(A) be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”^(B)

⁴² He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.”^(A)

⁴⁴ So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.

³⁷ They replied, “Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.”^(A)

³⁸ “You don’t know what you are asking,”^(B) Jesus said. “Can you drink the cup^(C) I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?”^(D)

³⁶ “Abba,^[a] Father,”^(A) he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup^(B) from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”^(C)

⁵⁰ But I have a baptism^(A) to undergo, and what constraint I am under until it is completed!^(B)

⁴² “Father, if you are willing, take this cup^(A) from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”^(B)

¹⁰ Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)

¹¹ Jesus commanded Peter, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup^(A) the Father has given me?”

The Cup of God’s Wrath

¹⁵ This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, said to me: “Take from my hand this cup^(A) filled with the wine of my wrath and make all the nations to whom I send^(B) you drink it. ¹⁶ When they drink^(C) it, they will stagger^(D) and go mad^(E) because of the sword^(F) I will send among them.”
