The Destruction of the Temple and Signs of the End Times^(A)

24 Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to its buildings. ²“Do you see all these things?” he asked. “Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another;^(B) every one will be thrown down.”

³As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives,^(C) the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming^(D) and of the end of the age?”^(E)

⁴Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you.^(F) ⁵For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many.^(G) ⁶You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. ⁷Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.^(H) There will be famines^(I) and earthquakes in various places. ⁸All these are the beginning of birth pains.

⁹“Then you will be handed over to be persecuted^(J) and put to death,^(K) and you will be hated by all nations because of me.^(L) ¹⁰At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, ¹¹and many false prophets^(M) will appear and deceive many people.^(N) ¹²Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, ¹³but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.^(O) ¹⁴And this gospel of the kingdom^(P) will be preached in the whole world^(Q) as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

¹⁵“So when you see standing in the holy place^(R) ‘the abomination that causes desolation,’^[a]^(S) spoken of through the prophet Daniel—let the reader understand— ¹⁶then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. ¹⁷Let no one on the housetop^(T) go down to take anything out of the house. ¹⁸Let no one in the field go back to get their cloak. ¹⁹How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers!^(U) ²⁰Pray that your flight will not take place in winter or on the Sabbath. ²¹For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now—and never to be equaled again.^(V)

²²“If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect^(W) those days will be shortened. ²³At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah!’ or, ‘There he is!’ do not believe it.^(X) ²⁴For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders^(Y) to deceive, if possible, even the elect. ²⁵See, I have told you ahead of time.

²⁶“So if anyone tells you, ‘There he is, out in the wilderness,’ do not go out; or, ‘Here he is, in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. ²⁷For as lightning^(Z) that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming^(AA) of the Son of Man.^(AB) ²⁸Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather.^(AC)

²⁹“Immediately after the distress of those days

“‘the sun will be darkened,
and the moon will not give its light;
the stars will fall from the sky,
and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’^[b]^(AD)

³⁰“Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth^[c] will mourn^(AE) when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven,^(AF) with power and great glory.^[d] ³¹And he will send his angels^(AG) with a loud trumpet call,^(AH) and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.

³²“Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. ³³Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it^[e] is near, right at the door.^(AI) ³⁴Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.^(AJ) ³⁵Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.^(AK)

The Day and Hour Unknown^(AL)^(AM)

³⁶“But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son,^[f] but only the Father.^(AN) ³⁷As it was in the days of Noah,^(AO) so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. ³⁸For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage,^(AP) up to the day Noah entered the ark; ³⁹and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.^(AQ) ⁴⁰Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left.^(AR) ⁴¹Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.^(AS)

⁴²“Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.^(AT) ⁴³But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming,^(AU) he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. ⁴⁴So you also must be ready,^(AV) because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

⁴⁵“Who then is the faithful and wise servant,^(AW) whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time? ⁴⁶It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns.^(AX) ⁴⁷Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.^(AY) ⁴⁸But suppose that servant is wicked and says to himself, ‘My master is staying away a long time,’ ⁴⁹and he then begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards.^(AZ) ⁵⁰The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. ⁵¹He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.^(BA)

Jesus Foretells Destruction of the Temple

24 ^(A)Jesus left the temple and was going away, when his disciples came to point out to him the buildings of the temple. ²But he answered them, “You see all these, do you not? Truly, I say to you, ^(B)there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.”

Signs of the End of the Age

³As he sat on ^(C)the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him ^(D)privately, saying, “Tell us, ^(E)when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your ^(F)coming and of ^(G)the end of the age?” ⁴And Jesus answered them, ^(H)“See that no one leads you astray. ⁵For ^(I)many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am ^(J)the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray. ⁶And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you ^(K)are not alarmed, for this ^(L)must take place, but the end is not yet. ⁷For ^(M)nation will rise against nation, and ^(N)kingdom against kingdom, and there will be ^(O)famines and earthquakes in various places. ⁸All these are but the beginning of ^(P)the birth pains.

⁹“Then ^(Q)they will deliver you up ^(R)to tribulation and ^(S)put you to death, and ^(T)you will be hated by all nations for my name's sake. ¹⁰And then many will fall away^[a] and ^(U)betray one another and hate one another. ¹¹And many ^(V)false prophets will arise ^(W)and lead many astray. ¹²And because lawlessness will be increased, ^(X)the love of many will grow cold. ¹³^(Y)But the one who endures to the end will be saved. ¹⁴And this gospel of the kingdom ^(Z)will be proclaimed throughout the whole world ^(AA)as a testimony ^(AB)to all nations, and ^(AC)then the end will come.

The Abomination of Desolation

¹⁵“So when you see the abomination of desolation ^(AD)spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in ^(AE)the holy place (^(AF)let the reader understand), ¹⁶then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. ¹⁷^(AG)Let the one who is on ^(AH)the housetop not go down to take what is in his house, ¹⁸and let the one who is in the field not turn back to take his cloak. ¹⁹And ^(AI)alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! ²⁰Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a Sabbath. ²¹For then there will be ^(AJ)great tribulation, ^(AK)such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be. ²²And if those days had not been cut short, no human being would be saved. But for ^(AL)the sake of the elect those days will be cut short. ²³^(AM)Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There he is!’ do not believe it. ²⁴For ^(AN)false christs and ^(AO)false prophets will arise and ^(AP)perform great signs and wonders, ^(AQ)so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect. ²⁵See, ^(AR)I have told you beforehand. ²⁶So, if they say to you, ‘Look, ^(AS)he is in the wilderness,’ do not go out. If they say, ‘Look, he is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. ²⁷^(AT)For as the lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, so will be ^(AU)the coming of the Son of Man. ²⁸^(AV)Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather.

The Coming of the Son of Man

²⁹“Immediately after ^(AW)the tribulation of those days ^(AX)the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and ^(AY)the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. ³⁰Then ^(AZ)will appear in heaven ^(BA)the sign of the Son of Man, and then ^(BB)all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and ^(BC)they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven ^(BD)with power and great glory. ³¹And ^(BE)he will send out his angels with a loud ^(BF)trumpet call, and they will ^(BG)gather ^(BH)his elect from ^(BI)the four winds, ^(BJ)from one end of heaven to the other.

The Lesson of the Fig Tree

³²“From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. ³³So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near, ^(BK)at the very gates. ³⁴^(BL)Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. ³⁵^(BM)Heaven and earth will pass away, but ^(BN)my words will not pass away.

No One Knows That Day and Hour

³⁶“But concerning that day and hour ^(BO)no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, ^(BP)nor the Son,^[b] ^(BQ)but the Father only. ³⁷^(BR)For as were the days of Noah, ^(BS)so will be the coming of the Son of Man. ³⁸^(BT)For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, ^(BU)marrying and giving in marriage, until ^(BV)the day when Noah entered the ark, ³⁹and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, ^(BW)so will be the coming of the Son of Man. ⁴⁰Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left. ⁴¹^(BX)Two women will be grinding ^(BY)at the mill; one will be taken and one left. ⁴²Therefore, ^(BZ)stay awake, for you do not know on what day ^(CA)your Lord is coming. ⁴³^(CB)But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what part of the night ^(CC)the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. ⁴⁴Therefore you also must be ^(CD)ready, for ^(CE)the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

⁴⁵“Who then is ^(CF)the faithful and ^(CG)wise servant,^[c] whom his master has set over his household, to give them their food at the proper time? ⁴⁶^(CH)Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes. ⁴⁷Truly, I say to you, ^(CI)he will set him over all his possessions. ⁴⁸But if that wicked servant says to himself, ‘My master ^(CJ)is delayed,’ ⁴⁹and begins to beat his fellow servants^[d] and eats and drinks with ^(CK)drunkards, ⁵⁰the master of that servant will come ^(CL)on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know ⁵¹and will cut him in pieces and put him with the hypocrites. Perilous Times

The Glorious Return

Parable of the Fig Tree

Be Ready for His Coming

⁴²“Therefore ^(BC)be on the alert, for you do not know which day your Lord is coming. ⁴³But ^[ai]be sure of this, that ^(BD)if the head of the house had known ^(BE)at what time of the night the thief was coming, he would have been on the alert and would not have allowed his house to be broken into. ⁴⁴For this reason ^(BF)you must be ready as well; for ^(BG)the Son of Man is coming at an hour when you do not think He will.

⁴⁵“^(BH)Who then is the ^(BI)faithful and ^(BJ)sensible slave whom his ^[aj]master ^(BK)put in charge of his household slaves, to give them their food at the proper time? ⁴⁶Blessed is that slave whom his ^[ak]master finds so doing when he comes. ⁴⁷Truly I say to you that ^(BL)he will put him in charge of all his possessions. ⁴⁸But if that evil slave says in his heart, ‘My ^[al]master ^[am]is not coming for a long time,’ ⁴⁹and he begins to beat his fellow slaves, and he eats and drinks with those habitually drunk; ⁵⁰then the ^[an]master of that slave will come on a day that he does not expect, and at an hour that he does not know, ⁵¹and he will ^[ao]cut him in two and assign ^[ap]him a place with the hypocrites; in that place there will be ^(BM)weeping and gnashing of teeth.

24 Trong khi Chúa Giê-xu đang rời đền thờ thì các môn đệ chỉ cho Ngài thấy những tòa nhà của đền thờ. ²Chúa Giê-xu hỏi, “Các con có thấy các tòa nhà nguy nga nầy không? Ta bảo thật, sẽ không còn một tảng đá nào nằm chồng trên tảng đá khác. Tất cả đều sẽ đổ nhào xuống đất hết.”

³Sau đó, lúc Chúa Giê-xu đang ngồi trên núi Ô-liu, thì các môn đệ đến hỏi riêng Ngài rằng, “Xin thầy cho chúng con biết chừng nào những chuyện ấy xảy đến? Và có dấu hiệu gì cho thấy thầy sắp trở lại và tận thế không?”

⁴Chúa Giê-xu đáp, “Hãy cẩn thận, đừng để ai phỉnh gạt các con. ⁵Nhiều người sẽ mạo danh ta đến xưng rằng, ‘Ta là Đấng Cứu Thế,’ và họ sẽ lường gạt nhiều người. ⁶Các con sẽ nghe về giặc giã và tiếng đồn về giặc nhưng đừng hoảng hốt. Sở dĩ Ngài rút ngắn những ngày ấy lại là vì những người Ngài đã chọn. ²³Khi đó nếu ai bảo các con, ‘Đấng Cứu Thế kia kìa!’ hoặc người nào nói, ‘Ngài ở đàng kia!’ thì đừng tin. ²⁴Nhiều đấng cứu thế giả và nhà tiên tri giả sẽ đến làm nhiều dấu kỳ và phép lạ ^[b]. ²⁶Nếu người ta bảo các con, ‘Thượng Đế ở trong đồng hoang kìa,’ thì đừng đi. Hoặc nếu họ nói, ‘Thượng Đế ở trong phòng ấy’ thì đừng tin. ²⁷Lúc Con Người hiện đến thì mọi người đều sẽ thấy Ngài như chớp lòe từ Đông sang Tây. ²⁸Xác chết ở đâu, kên kên tụ lại đó.

²⁹Sau những ngày khốn khổ ấy thì,

‘mặt trời sẽ tối sầm lại,
mặt trăng không chiếu sáng nữa.
Các ngôi sao từ trời rơi xuống.
Các quyền lực trên trời sẽ rúng động.’ ^[c]

³⁰Lúc ấy, dấu hiệu Con Người sẽ hiện ra trên bầu trời. Mọi dân tộc trên thế gian sẽ than khóc. Họ sẽ thấy Con Người hiện đến giữa mây trời với quyền lực và hiển vinh cao cả. ³¹Ngài sẽ dùng tiếng kèn lớn, sai thiên sứ đi khắp đất để tập họp những người được chọn từ mọi nơi trên thế giới.

³²Hãy rút bài học từ cây vả: Lúc nhánh nó hóa xanh và mềm, lá non trổ ra thì các con biết mùa hạ gần tới. ³³Cũng thế, khi các con thấy những biến cố ấy, thì biết rằng thời kỳ ^[d] đã gần kề, sắp đến rồi. ³⁴Ta bảo thật, tất cả những biến cố ấy sẽ xảy ra trong khi người ở thời đại nầy vẫn còn sống. ³⁵Trời đất sẽ bị tiêu hủy, nhưng lời ta nói sẽ không bao giờ bị tiêu hủy đâu.

³⁶Tuy nhiên không ai biết ngày, giờ ấy, các thiên sứ và ngay đến Con cũng không biết. Chỉ một mình Cha biết mà thôi. ³⁷Khi Con Người trở lại, cũng tương tự như thời đại Nô-ê. ³⁸Vào thời kỳ trước cơn lụt lớn, người ta ăn uống, cưới, gả cho đến ngày Nô-ê vào tàu. ³⁹Chẳng ai hay biết gì cả cho đến khi nước lụt tràn đến tiêu diệt hết. Khi Con Người trở lại cũng như thế. ⁴⁰Có hai người đang ở ngoài đồng, một người được rước đi, còn người kia bị bỏ lại. ⁴¹Hai người đàn bà đang xay cối, một người được rước đi, còn người kia bị bỏ lại.

⁴²Cho nên phải sẵn sàng, vì các con không biết ngày nào Chúa mình sẽ đến. ⁴³Nên nhớ điều nầy: Nếu chủ nhà biết giờ nào kẻ trộm đến lúc ban đêm, thì chắc chắn người ấy sẽ đề phòng, không để nó lẻn vô nhà được. ⁴⁴Cho nên các con phải sẵn sàng, vì Con Người sẽ đến vào lúc các con không ngờ.

Đầy tớ tốt và đầy tớ xấu^(C)

⁴⁵Ai là đầy tớ khôn ngoan và trung tín mà chủ nhà tin cậy giao cho nhiệm vụ phân phát thức ăn cho các đầy tớ khác đúng giờ giấc? ⁴⁶Khi chủ nhà đến, thấy nó đang làm phận sự, thì nó sẽ được khen thưởng. ⁴⁷Ta bảo thật, chủ nhà sẽ chọn người đầy tớ ấy cho cai quản tất cả tài sản mình. ⁴⁸Nhưng nếu tên đầy tớ gian ác đó nghĩ thầm, ‘Chủ ta còn lâu mới về,’ ⁴⁹rồi bắt đầu đánh đập các đầy tớ khác và nhậu nhẹt với bạn bè. ⁵⁰Chủ nhà sẽ về thình lình trong lúc nó không chuẩn bị và chẳng ngờ tới. ⁵¹Chủ sẽ xé xác nó, tống cổ nó chung với bọn đạo đức giả, là nơi người ta khóc lóc và nghiến răng vì đau đớn.

24 And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to shew him the buildings of the temple.

²And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.

³And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?

⁴And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.

⁵For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.

⁶And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.
